Hi Cecile! Hi everyone!

@ still b/p -- TOTALLY agree. Some of us are nutty enough to pursue that CHP, actually!

I took off my shirt to celebrate Herbie Mann. Unfortunately, I was asked to go to the dean's office. It was worth it though.

Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:11pm Jshatan:

@Tim - I only take my shirt off for Isaac Hayes.

ah you got this!!!
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:18pm tim from champaign:

In fact I was, Jan! When my co-workers didn't believe (or were ignorant of) my Herbie Mann explanation, I referred them to the Donny Hathaway song that Duane just played.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:19pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Hahahaha you're on a roll Tim
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:21pm tim from champaign:

Bo-hannon!!!!
  Wed. 3/19/14 12:22pm The Interloper:

Fave Herbie Mann LP is "Stone Flute." Favorite Herbie LP cover is, of course, "Push Push." That one rivals the Orleans cover for shirtless audacity and hilarity. Oh yes, and Derek and Lon Van Eaton on Apple. THese are my observations and opinions. More to follow. Good afternoon Duane. Marvelous flow so far. Flomax!
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:22pm tim from champaign:

How was the Bohannon show Duane and any of you who went?
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:24pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

So, TIm, those sick stories you told led to a happy feeling...
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:25pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Alas, I couldn't make that show… Boohoo
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:28pm Jshatan:

Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:29pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Does anyone else hear the buzz in Duane's mic?
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:29pm chris:

Your mic is hot, Duane. And so was that first set! :-)
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:29pm Cory:

  Wed. 3/19/14 12:31pm The Interloper:

Could be a transmitter issue. Loss of power. Or, Duane is speaking into a comb through a thin layer of wax paper.
  Wed. 3/19/14 12:31pm frenchee:

find the dot, D, and back off a bit.
Or ask Ken what he broke.

Have any of you read the blog "My Husband's Stupid Record Collection"? There seems to be some current hype about it on the facespace/blogosphere. If so, what are your thoughts about it?
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:40pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

I'm going to an AIGA/NY talk tonight by a photographer who's project has been photographing obsessive record collectors...
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:40pm Mike East:

@tim - I glanced at it. My initial impression is that I like the idea of going through your spouse's record collection, but I didn't really like how condescending she was being.
Bonus points for having a Matt Farley song about her, though.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:42pm probablyjohn:

I have, my thoughts are that there's not much of anything there to have thoughts about.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:45pm Andrew Waterloo:

My thought is record collectors are surprisingly thin-skinned about that blog.
  Wed. 3/19/14 12:48pm Cecile:

You all should google "Detroit children's choir sings Happy." I see at least three future stars in the lineup
  Wed. 3/19/14 12:49pm Cecile:

I used to like the site Record Weirdo. The collectors made fun of themselves
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:49pm tim from champaign:

I like your thinking, probablyjohn.

Mike, I initially liked the idea too. I also liked that the author listened with a fairly open mind (like with the Ayler record). After a bit, I started to wonder if the author was being disingenuous. She stated that she's a writer and librarian yet (for example) she doesn't know the term au pairs, has no context to the cover image of the Au Pairs album or calls a gatefold jacket "open-y". Hmmmm.....
  Wed. 3/19/14 12:50pm Cecile:

She says it's a joke.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:51pm Jshatan:

I checked out that blog - her persona (which I have heard is considered "adorkable") is very tough to take. She just seems like someone with too much time on her hands.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:52pm tim from champaign:

OK, that makes sense now, Cecile.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:54pm Duane:

Hey Guys! I personally think that it is kinda harmless. It's slightly to indie for its own good, but i've dated plenty of women who kind of had that kind of attitude about record collecting..not so much shaming, but wondering why records. Most of them never grew up with music in the house :)
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:56pm still b/p:

These days, and especially online, so many need to do the Hoaxy Pokesy...that's what it's all about.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:57pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Nice cover
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:57pm Duane:

hoax or not..I thought it was pretty funny
  Wed. 3/19/14 12:58pm Cecile:

My husband could do one about my record collection
  Wed. 3/19/14 12:59pm Cecile:

Best cover of this I've ever heard
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 12:59pm chris:

oh, yes! this Higher ground is taking me there!
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 1:00pm Golde:

my fav showyoyoooooo!!
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 1:00pm tim from champaign:

Before I started second guessing the writing, I liked the idea of trying to understand the mind of someone who isn't a music fiend. Almost all of my friends (female and male) are nuts about music.
  Wed. 3/19/14 1:00pm Cecile:

And I know a lot of smart people who don't know jack about music. I'd bet she would be fun to drink with.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 1:01pm probablyjohn:

btw, if people want to get all worked up discussing gender and stereotype issues based on a massively overshared meager blog about records, this one seems a lot more ripe:
heightfiveseven.com
  Wed. 3/19/14 1:05pm Cecile:

She has good taste,,but strangely I'm unmoved
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 1:05pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

I was lucky enough to see him a few times in the early-mid 80s, his voice was still strong to say the least...
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 1:06pm Andrew Waterloo:

@Cecile, as someone who is rarely surrounded by people who know music. We tend to forget that we've invested a lot of time and energy into getting to know what we know.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 1:07pm Jshatan:

How's the rest of the McIlwaine record?
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 1:07pm tim from champaign:

I'll give it a closer read after work, pb.
  Wed. 3/19/14 1:08pm Cecile:

Exactly, Andrew. And if someone asked me about wine or Truffaut movies or anime, I would be kind of clueless.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 1:10pm Duane:

Hello Golde! Thanx for tuning in!
JShatan: That record is great. I love this and her first two records for Mercury.
  Wed. 3/19/14 1:10pm Cecile:

I would just be a little less artless about expressing my ignorance
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 1:14pm tim from champaign:

This Can cover is out of control, Duane. Nice!
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 1:18pm Jshatan:

Good to know, D. Going to keep my eyes out for that one!
  Wed. 3/19/14 1:19pm James Mulrhee:

DUANE! You are KILLING it today!! 14 DAYS IS NOT ENOUGH!
  Wed. 3/19/14 1:22pm paula pc:

of course you have this...AWESOME show today, Duane!!!!!
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 1:22pm Neg-guh-tor:

Duane rules, as usual. Diggin' it!
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 1:27pm probablyjohn:

@tim, don't bother, I'm certainly not recommending it, it's nothing. I just pointed it out as compare/contrast for the silly overanalysis that's going on.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 1:31pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Bobby Byrd Mr. "Get on up"
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 1:31pm Andrew Waterloo:

@Cecile, I could imagine trying to describe my friend's comic book collection. There will be stuff I like, there will be stuff I find ridiculous, and would never feel comfortable with trying to sound knowledgable...
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 1:34pm Jshatan:

I remember reading about how the Byrd family gave JB a bed to sleep in back in the early days. They had a tight bond, indeed.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 1:36pm still b/p:

I gotta go pick up a friend's kids. I wish I could have this show on in the vehicle, so the boys could get some after-school schoolin'.

sort of related -- did anyone go to the peaches show here in nyc?
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 1:51pm Duane:

My friend Ahmed went Golde..he said it was kinda just ok:( I hope that's not true..she was always awesome to see live!
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 1:55pm Sem Chumbo:

Thanks, Duane. Both a listening and reading pleasure this pm. Fully funked up for the rest of the day. See you next time.

Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:01pm common:

love this tame impala!
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:01pm Jshatan:

Tame Impala should release that - might be the best thing they've done.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:01pm Neg-guh-tor:

This sounds more like Melody's Echo Chamber than Tame Impala. Is that why I like it so much?
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:02pm robyn:

finally able to check in! hey duaniacs. got to see the future classic artists play at SXSW, it was great. touch sensitive was really funky live and cashmere cat was awesome.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:02pm robyn:

also, touch sensitive has a bass guitar the color of his eyes.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:03pm steve:

yeah, why on Earth is that track not being given a proper release? id buy it.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:07pm tim from champaign:

I play Boogie In Your Butt when I DJ parties too, Duane! People love it.
  Wed. 3/19/14 2:09pm jamesmulry:

We don't only love the euro-trashy tunes ;)
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:10pm Duane:

jamesmulry: hahahha..of course ya don't!
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:13pm tim from champaign:

This Assagi is a bad jam!
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:14pm Duane:

robyn: Oh that's great to hear..I'm glad it was a good show? Anything else that you saw or heard that was good?
  Wed. 3/19/14 2:17pm Kleigh:

Did Mandrill sound like Assagai, Duane? I am always intrigued when I come across there albums ... and Osibisa.
  Wed. 3/19/14 2:18pm Kleigh:

*their
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:19pm robyn:

@duane nah, my sxsw was not too crazy this year. too much work. missed kelela which sounded like it was great ><
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:20pm Greg from Bloomfield:

Just got my boss to turn on FMU for the first time...NOW, DUANE! DO IT!!!
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:21pm Duane:

Osibisa and Mandrill are great afro-funk bands. I'd say that Osibisa was a bit closer to Assagai than Mandrill. Mandrill is closer to Kool & the Gang than all of those bands.
Robyn: Yeah I heard it was good..although mixed to negative feelings about SXSW this year than i've heard in awhile..when the Wall Street Journal say's its to "markety"..the shark is jumped!
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:23pm Jshatan:

Mandrill - from darkest Brooklyn. Good bit of the second line in their sound. Plays well with the Meters, for example. Everyone should at least have their greatest hits. Monstrous live, too, according the bootleg I have.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:26pm efd:

Always a pleasure to hear some Boney M!
  Wed. 3/19/14 2:27pm Cecile:

HC were fun. They could play.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:28pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

The bass is awesome
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:28pm tim from champaign:

Wax Poetics has had great in-depth articles about both Mandrill and Osibisa.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:28pm robyn:

@duane oh and lines were crazy. i waited for psychemagik and little dragon to no avail. IMO the interactive part of SXSW kind of drags the vibe down. it gives it all a too monied air. more about marketability than art.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:35pm kwhitehead:

As usual during Duane's show my Discogs want list grows larger. So much good shit but damn, some of it is expensive.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:38pm Duane:

sorry kwhitehead..don't mean to break your bank! hahaha:)
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 2:39pm common:
