Every show starts with a cut from the ‘70s: Rediscovering the forgotten rockers, revisiting the once-hated disco beats, replaying the power-pop favorites. Next: copious amounts of new releases and occasional live bands. Also: I’m the biggest Nick Gilder fan on WFMU.

Yeah DJ Evan 'Funk' Davies and ELO! Does anyone know the story (if there is one) behind the prelude intro to this ELO song?

@efd, your eddie & the hot rods cover was a major highlight of the marathon finale, thank you!

That great little 3-4 album streak by the Pre John Hughes Simple Minds remains damned respectable.

And apologies for rewarding your effort with a pun, Evan! :p

Awlright ! I been sayin' for days how solid a drummer you are efd man! I play guitar like everybody, but I've barely played w/ a drummer @ all - so I love drummers ! They still impress me...But why didn't Dave Hill do three-finger trills thru a Marshall Stack - ?!?
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:17pm Callieflower:

I honestly didn't know about them playing this style! I only knew of Don't You Forget about me

Holy Smokes! I second that remark about "How Dare You"! Simply superb record!
  Wed. 3/12/14 9:20pm Soapythedog:

Hearing this, I thought "Oh, this is where the Beastie Boys grabbed that sample." Forgot it was one of their instrumentals.

Ack! Most go offline, back asap. 10ish? Meanwhile efd, please play only moderately great songs :-)

So I just learned that David Lynch, Trent Reznor and John Carpenter have each collaborated individually with Jean Michel Jarre for his album slated to come out later this year. Holy hell!
Avatar    Wed. 3/12/14 9:26pm JakeGould:

BGZ, that sounds like it could be potentially be equally amazing & terrible.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:27pm Callieflower:

OMG, Randall!
Avatar    Wed. 3/12/14 9:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...has High on Fire ever covered Fire on High? Are you playing instrumentals because everyone there is tired of thinking about singing Post-Marathon? These & other questions...should be ignored...Sounds very Cinematic BGZ - or CineMusical - an interesting group of people indeed...not @ the same time I'm sure - but Reznor & Lynch together alone spurs the imagination !...
  Wed. 3/12/14 9:30pm EL:

Ahhhhh!
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 9:31pm Matt F:

We are listening to these swinging instrumentals while preparing a meat sauce that Amanda has dubbed "Saltalamacchia".

There are rumors that Gary Numan and Vince Clarke also collaborated on the Jarre album.

Wed. 3/12/14 9:53pm Eddy in Australia:

Here I was thinking the whole show was going to be instrumental as anything!
@Evan: Great work during the marathon. Loved the Eddie & the Hot Rods cover, too.
Simple Minds were quite popular down here in that period (Love Song was even a chart hit), and earlier songs like I Travel and Celebrate were even better.

Oh, hero Joe. So many questions, and he WILL help you. Due to vagaries in pledge process Joe's going to need some extra love, give it up!

@MattF & Amanda - I would love to know more about Saltamacchia. What can you share? ;-)

Damn, that Fingerprintz song was good. Can't believe I ignored them at the time (was it their name? their logo?). For a few moments there I thought it might be the Bush Tetras (the guitar?).

Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 10:18pm Holly in NC:

This Bappi Lahiri is unintentionally totally badass.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 10:19pm efd:

Eddy, they moved in a more synth/dance direction after the Very Dab LP, but that album is great and the single they put out before that ("Dancing With Yourself") remains one of my all-time fave power pop records.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 10:19pm efd:

(and, therefore, one of my all-time fave records)
Wed. 3/12/14 10:24pm Eddy in Australia:

@EFD: Thanks for the tip. I'll go digging ...
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 10:30pm Whooda:

DJ EFD I'm sure you have but if not the documentary of Ginger Baker, Beware of Mr. Baker, is an excellent pic.
  Wed. 3/12/14 10:34pm Hatch:

I just got the Bappi Lahiri soundtrack that song is from in Calcutta in January, it's from a Bond ripoff film. Bappi is the undisputed king of Bollywood disco as far as I'm concerned. These days he's physically as big as a house and is sadly an active member of India's virulent Hindu nationalist party BJP.

Hmm it seems like there's more cats and dogs on the playlist...perhaps in response to yesterday's Dave Hill show?
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 10:36pm Holly in NC:

@efd, thank you. While not a huge Drivin' & Cryin' fan, I think Mr. Fowler may have participated in some Frank French/Kevin Kinney works which I heartily enjoy.

Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 11:09pm Whooda:

@Holly, I readily understand that 'live' is the only way to truly appreciate SCOTS, but alas, I've only seen a few videos. WIKI: "... as they usually write and perform songs about dancing, sex, and fried chicken," gotta love that!

Let's set up a virtual show. Limbo sticks & fried chicken not optional, pointy boots huge bonus.
Avatar Wed. 3/12/14 11:25pm Holly in NC:

White Hills wonderful.

Chris Stamey amazing. Talk about icon/idol, been following since early 80s, well before I moved to NC. Does not get enough credit.

If anyone owns "The Robust Beauty of Improper Linear Models in Decision Making" I will pay for a mp3 copy, my cd skips & it's impossible to find online. Fair warning -anyone who doesn't own it would likely hate it.
