Sorry, Dave, meant the one and only DJ Dave M, was disracted by a dog that was mauling me (affectionately)
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:13pm Mdurek:

Nice use of dissonant in the backing instrument there, in such a pleasing contrast to the rest!
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:15pm JakeGould:

Hi Dave! Great show so far! But sleep beckons. So hi, bye!
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:15pm Dave Mandl:

Hello/goodbye, @Jake!
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:16pm Mdurek:

And this one reminds me of a more mellow version of the soundtrack from a Waking Life, have you heard that Dave?

@P-90 - raining all day. Glad it didn't snow -- I'd be the first person they'd call in to work, because it's only a 2 block walk.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:27pm bobdoesthings:

wooooo it's fun to win stuff!!!
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:29pm pacific standard simon:

Congrats, Bob -- sometimes you just don't know if the winners are really into what they win.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:32pm pacific standard simon:

Do they still do MTV Unplugged? I wonder what Petra Haden Unplugged would be like.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:35pm pacific standard simon:

Is that John Stax on bass? Really great!
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:36pm Dave Mandl:

  Sun. 3/2/14 10:42pm LovecraftDude888:

PSS 2 block walk to work? that's pretty cool i guess
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:42pm pacific standard simon:

DJ Valerie is awesome.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:42pm Droll:

It's nice to hear DJ Val, FMU's most confident-sounding DJ!

The 9-disc set of Monophonic Miles sounds like a winner. I regret spring-loading my pledge for a show later this week, I'd like that box set...

DS, I remember the Electric Banana (and The Decade) from when I was in grad school in Yinzburgh.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:44pm bobdoesthings:

Craziest thing happened to me the other day.. got on my elevator at work.. and NO ONE talked about the weather. It was crazy.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:45pm pacific standard simon:

Do you live in San Francisco, Bob? No one talks about the weather there, because they don't have any.
  Sun. 3/2/14 10:46pm 12539:

Three cheers for DJ Val!

(I hate to mention it, Dave, but "Tarantella" on the playlist should have two ll's)
  Sun. 3/2/14 10:46pm P-90:

Go Go Go, DJ Valerie!
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:47pm bobdoesthings:

NYC... I wish there was a place where it just went from spring to fall constantly.. no extremes.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:50pm JakeGould:

bobdoesthings, you know what I am fighting the urge to do in the world elevator? Scream, “It’s friggin’ winter!!! OF COURSE iT IS COLD & THERE IS SNOW! Should I show you some little Golden Book that explains it?!?”
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:50pm pacific standard simon:

Sounds like SF -- mostly Autumn, with occasional bursts of Spring. Summer is the first two weeks of October, & they sometimes have days of Winter in July.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:51pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I made a Double Mandl pledge.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:51pm Dave Mandl:

Thanks, Kenzo!
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:52pm bobdoesthings:

@jake YUP! Me too.. everytime..
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:52pm JakeGould:

I meant, WORK elevator. The world elevator is what I am in when I meet with fellow Jews to discuss the weather & world economy. And how we should tell “The Man” to run things.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:52pm pacific standard simon:

Kenzo! I wanted to pledge to your show in absentia.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:52pm Andrew Waterloo:

I usually just say I'm looking forward to complaining about the heat.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:53pm Droll:

I still insist there should be a term for when you hear something on FMU, search for it, and find only links back to FMU.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:53pm bobdoesthings:

@andrew.. well put.. Might have to use this
  Sun. 3/2/14 10:54pm LovecraftDude888:

an Upsalace?
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:54pm pacific standard simon:

Dave, I can see your fate; in 20 years, you'll be painting urban landscapes in oil. Outdoors.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:55pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@pss: You can pick my premium! wfmu.org...
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:56pm pacific standard simon:

Well, I AM putting together a mouse house, brick by brick.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:57pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Maybe I'll include on the DVD that show you called into.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:58pm Droll:

"Old school hipster music." She means Mellotron?
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:58pm pacific standard simon:

HIPSTER? That's a cuss word here. Valerie should listen to Sue Braun.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 10:59pm Andrew Waterloo:

I dunno.. Hipster sort of implies that we're listening to music that is actually cool somewhere.
  Sun. 3/2/14 11:00pm P-90:

"...no offense to your old-school 'hipster' stuff, BUT......!"
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:02pm Droll:

I'm changing my pledge to Val's "Old School Hipster Music" show, which can be heard in Dave Mandl's old slot staring the week after the H&M.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:02pm Bill Mac:

I like how she tried not to hurt our feelings.... snif
  Sun. 3/2/14 11:03pm P-90:

pss is right, Pseu does the ol' school-Bleecker Bob's-hipsteroonie-with-contemporary pop-sprinkled-in thing. Got a feeling Val and Pseu might really hit it off
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:03pm pacific standard simon:

♥ Droll
  Sun. 3/2/14 11:06pm P-90:

Can we take a vote on Droll's name-change suggestion?
"World of Echo" was always cute, don't get me wrong, but it's strating to sound a little....."old school" maybe?
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:06pm pacific standard simon:

Oh man, I just found a character I haven't tried before... *ᴥ*
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:08pm pacific standard simon:

No, I pledged again.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:08pm Caryn:

@pss: I can't decide if that is cute, or whether that's a teddy bear with its eyes ripped out.
  Sun. 3/2/14 11:08pm P-90:

pss: wow, it's a little stoned bear
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:09pm pacific standard simon:

P-90 got it!
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:09pm Andrew Waterloo:

@Caryin, it could be a Teddy Bear with sparkles in his eyes. He may just be loving all this old school hipster music.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:10pm Caryn:

@Andrew: It could also be a person looking at a fireworks show.
  Sun. 3/2/14 11:12pm P-90:

"...are those asterisks or are you just happy to see me?"
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:12pm Caryn:

@Andrew: Or a person on stage flanked by illuminating spotlights.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:12pm Mdurek:

Night all! Thanks Dave, thanks fmu
  Sun. 3/2/14 11:14pm P-90:

.....wait, did you take your Chihuahua to the Bob Weir show last night?
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:14pm Andrew Waterloo:

@P-90, they are asterisks, and they are wild.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:14pm pacific standard simon:

@Caryn - Yes, the Oscars ARE on!
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:15pm Andrew Waterloo:

Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:18pm Caryn:

@pss: oh look, the best original song Oscar was just handed out!
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:19pm Caryn:

@Andrew: I'm hoping that was "stuffed snake" as in toy, not as in taxidermy.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:19pm pacific standard simon:

I ran out of Hello Kitty band aids, so the WFMU ones will make good backups.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:20pm Andrew Waterloo:

Yes.. stuff toy. The boy is turning 3. I always try to find something cool and unusual.
  Sun. 3/2/14 11:21pm P-90:

Oscar who?
...oh, is that dog 'n' pony show still around?
lemme guess, somewhere Seth McFarlane is tied up and gagged in a closet, they're not letting him loose til its over
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:21pm pacific standard simon:

And THAT, my friends, is a wonderful book. You need it VERY badly if you like Parks at all.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:24pm pacific standard simon:

Song Cycle is one of my desert island discs.
  Sun. 3/2/14 11:29pm LovecraftDude888:

how about Milieu of Reverberation?
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:29pm pacific standard simon:

It would be interesting to have a private conversation with a FMU DJ about how the prizes are distributed among the DJs... not asking, though.
  Sun. 3/2/14 11:30pm LovecraftDude888:

sorry Dave...depressed and tired goin' to bed early. and more snow tomorrow...bumming. and R Rabbit has buggered off

Sun. 3/2/14 11:35pm Ice King Enterprises:

@PSS, as I understand it, some DJs request particular prizes to give away during their marathon shows, and if the hard-working BT can get them, he will. Then there may be a list of other available items to fill it all out, and the DJs will pick from that list, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Call us now! 1-800-989-9368.
  Sun. 3/2/14 11:35pm LovecraftDude888:

i had no idea Gerry Hambling passed on...great film editor bigtime dat sux
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:37pm Andrew Waterloo:

I also figured it was just a friendly process of first come first.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:38pm Caryn:

@LCD: hey, at least there hasn't been an interpretive dance salute to anything. Hmm, then again, I haven't exactly been paying attention to the tv (there's a Marathon going on, after all), and there was that mysterious Pink booking, which could consist of her twirling down from the ceiling in some "salute to wire-fu" thing, so I could be wrong...
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:39pm pacific standard simon:

I've got the headphones on so I don't have to listen to the Oscars in the next room...
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:39pm fleep:

Pink sang Over the Rainbow and remained planted on the stage.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:39pm Droll:

The best cleavage award should fall under the special effects awards categories. Visually stunning, but that's just not real.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:41pm pacific standard simon:

They should have an Erin Fleming honorary Oscar each year for most abused old-timer.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:42pm Andrew Waterloo:

I'm surprised there isn't a best stunt category
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:42pm pacific standard simon:

...I have not buggered ! - unless Charlize Theron - oh wait! - do comments have to be family safe this week - ?!...
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:45pm Caryn:

@fleep: damn, I was hoping they were going to make the introduction to "Gravity" more interesting by just having her twirl around in an astronaut costume.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:45pm pacific standard simon:

WHAT?! You can download the music! Pledge for the book! Believe me, I've tried to get those 33 1/3 books for free, and you can't.

Well, maybe on a torrent, maybe. But I wouldn't count on it.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:45pm bobdoesthings:

I'm too high for this..
  Sun. 3/2/14 11:46pm P-90:

pss: do you know what that little snout symbol is for? It's hard to Google a symbol you don't have in your fonts

@Rev Rab: I would say especially this week
  Sun. 3/2/14 11:47pm P-90:

"Canary in the Cockpit"?
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:48pm pacific standard simon:

@Caryn Barbarella set a high bar for a movie that begins with a woman in a space suit.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:49pm Caryn:

Wait, what are the prizes right now? The comments board distracted me for a bit and I missed it.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:49pm pacific standard simon:

Followed by "Latin Letter Ain"
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:50pm pacific standard simon:

The last almost great XTC album.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:50pm bobdoesthings:

@caryn uhh.. I think the 33 1/3 book? right? I'm not a reliable source at the moment
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:50pm Caryn:

@Andrew: true dat. And I doubt they'd recreate that at the Oscars (not kiddie-friendly enough).
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:51pm Dave Mandl:

@Caryn: The Van Dyke Parks book and the Cluster "71" CD.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:51pm Andrew Waterloo:

@Caryn, I'd imagine it being very friendly to 12-year boys.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:51pm Andrew Waterloo:

I think that's when Steven Colbert saw Barbarella.. at least it seems that way every time Jane is on his show.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:52pm pacific standard simon:

They should just put the Oscars on cable, give it to Jay Leno, and show boobies.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:52pm Caryn:

@bob: see, I thought they gave that out and moved on, hence my asking for the new one... Oy, who knows...

@Andrew: true, but some old biddy would complain to the FCC, and it'd be "nipplegate" all over again.
  Sun. 3/2/14 11:53pm V Priceless:

I think Skylarking is the last great XTC record from start to finish. Oranges/Lemons and Nonesuch had some brilliant moments. After that..,
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:54pm pacific standard simon:

FMU DJ Uncle Michael and I share an XTC live show in Lawrence, KS in 1980.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:55pm Caryn:

@pss: I'd be fine with most of that, but Jay Leno? He's the epitome of "safe comedy". When other talk show hosts cheered on Andy Kaufman, or Joan Rivers, or Greg Giraldo, etc. Jay was cheering on Carrot Top. I'd need the "edgy" Oscar host to actually be edgy.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:55pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...Dukes of Stratosphear is surely their 'highest' point....
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:56pm Droll:

Why AP gave up touring was a complex, part of it was he wasn't making any money because he signed the worst contract in industry history.
The end of live XTC was caught on video: www.youtube.com...
  Sun. 3/2/14 11:56pm P-90:

FULLERTON! home of Fender guitars!
  Sun. 3/2/14 11:57pm V Priceless:

Yeah. I know that tour. Was it December '80? They played a live radio broadcast here in NY, first week of December, '80, infamously enough.

Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:58pm fleep:

12 Years a Slave wins.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:59pm pacific standard simon:

@Caryn - I get that. But the job is perfect for Leno, now that he's done with Tonight, and I miss Bob Hope as a permanent host terribly.
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:59pm bobdoesthings:

ahh hermann schmidt cd!
Avatar Sun. 3/2/14 11:59pm Caryn:

@fleep: "12 Years a Slave" wins, and the internet goes nuts from Lupita Nyon'go and Benedict Cumberbatch standing next to each other. Memes are born, fan girls and fashion bloggers fan themselves by their laptops...
  Sun. 3/2/14 11:59pm V Priceless:

It really was stage fright for AP, though, that did them in live.
