Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

How's this for pretentious BS on the back of a bottle "On a crisp winter's day a cloudless sky fills the Dorset coastline with sunshine. Above a white-tailed eagle can be seen soaring above the sea. The sillouette of its majestic wings a sign that Spring is near".

It's fun to kid you about the Cubbies, UM, but I have to admit they kicked my Giants' asses last year. When your show is over today, I'm switching to a spring training game vs. the Brewers.

Avatar    Fri. 2/28/14 12:22pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Hey Hinky-Dinkers. Lets make the next 3 hours verrrry profitable for our beloved FMU-GTDS.
@ glenn. I looked at nyc.gov for the city run rinks. Counted 8 that I think are outdoor. Then you add the one at Rock Center cant think of any other outdoor rinks. You might want to check Yelp but many of those would be indoors
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 12:24pm Doug Schulkind:

Beautifully put, UM. ♥
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 12:24pm glenn:

i counted 17, but what do i know?

Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 12:31pm Doug Schulkind:

I heard someone once refer to Hinky Dinky Time as a "guilty pleasures" show. I think of it as a "pleasures" show.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 12:32pm northguineahills:

Man, it's been years since I've heard that Free Design classic.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 12:33pm northguineahills:

I possess no "guilty" pleasures. I embrace all of mine.
Avatar    Fri. 2/28/14 12:35pm listener james from westwood:

life is too short for guilt to hinder pleasures as elemental as musical choices. "embrace" is the perfect term for it.
Avatar    Fri. 2/28/14 12:36pm Stanley:

I love Hinky Dinky Time. Michael has me squirming in my chair (re: the previous track), as well as rolling on the carpet luxuriously.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 12:37pm listener jeff:

I often wake up at night with the Hinky Dinky theme song ear worming its way through my head
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 12:38pm earrie:

@ljfw - it's my Friday prompt to get stuff done and wrap up.

That said, there are a couple shows I'll gaze a lot at birds and the breeze. So not to discount the value of time spent in unconscious processing.
Avatar    Fri. 2/28/14 12:39pm KevinfromBayRidge:

@glenn . There are definitely some smaller ones that aren't city run like one at the Mus of Nat History. Guess I'm not focusing on ice after spending 5 weeks trying to avoid it in SE FLA.

WXRT is still the best English-Language air-broadcasted commercial radio station in Chicago. But Chicago has a number of Colleges/Universities with stations and the Chicago Independent Radio Project.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 12:43pm Doug Schulkind:

Just say YES, Stanley.
Avatar    Fri. 2/28/14 12:44pm KevinfromBayRidge:

FYI...the FMU stream & Android App is the only thing that kept me half-sane (outside of the temps) during the FLA sojourn.
Avatar    Fri. 2/28/14 12:44pm Artie:

Belock and Rex roped me in. Then I noticed all the other worlds in the WFMU galaxy.

UM, given that Endless Boogie is workin' for you, you may enjoy Natural Child naturalchild.bandcamp.com
Avatar    Fri. 2/28/14 12:46pm Alex In Illinois:

My gateway show was Wasted Vinyl that I tuned in back in 1987, when I started living in Dobbs Ferry, New York, and communted into The City. Somewhere, I have an old WFMU listener's guide with the 7 Wonders of New Jersey, like the Mysterious Hyphens of Ho-Ho-Kus, or the one strange factory that actually emits pleasant aromas.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 12:46pm northguineahills:

I remember reading about WFMU djs in some zine around '97. In '98, my job (while graduating university) was the only place w/ the bandwidth that could actually sometimes stream the primitive tinny WFMU stream at night. Moved here in 2000 for grad school, and the rest is history.
Avatar    Fri. 2/28/14 12:47pm pacific standard simon:

Belinda & Hova (Greasy Kid's Stuff) sucked me into WFMU like a monster vacuum cleaner. Sure wish they were on the Drummer stream these days.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 12:47pm northguineahills:

(that was in FL)
Avatar    Fri. 2/28/14 12:49pm Stanley:

I couldn't believe it when I discovered WFMU. Nine years later and I still can't believe how lucky I am.
Avatar    Fri. 2/28/14 12:49pm Uncle Michael:

Sorry I'm not as active in my own comments as I'd like to be...I'm spinning plates. Ed Sullivan...do you hear me? I'M SPINNING PLATES.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 12:50pm Gary:

Am embarrassed to admit just how much of a Klaatu fan I was.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 12:50pm northguineahills:

In grad school, I'd take breaks from study by perusing the playlists (couldn't stream).
  Fri. 2/28/14 12:50pm LovecraftDude888:

Actually it can be found out on L.I. in Riverhead..hehe well it's not called Atlantis anymore. spinning plates? far out! I was shaving my awful face, then having lunch and doing coffee
Avatar    Fri. 2/28/14 12:51pm Alex In Illinois:

After I had lived in the Chicago for over a decade, and streaming radio stations started appearing, it was like 2005 or something, and I thought: "What was that station out of East Orange New Jersey? Hmm WFMU, I wonder if they are steaming". Then I did a search and found it, tuned it in, and Give The Drummer Some was playing and I thought: "Wow! And they are the best streaming station in the World!"
Avatar    Fri. 2/28/14 12:52pm ndbob:

Charlie's show got me started on WFMU back in the dial-up days
  Fri. 2/28/14 12:52pm tater:

Getting to listen today
  Fri. 2/28/14 12:53pm LovecraftDude888:

Glenn hell the NYC tourist .gov sites should have all that info...esp. re: the Central park rink if there is one still, and the midtown one at Rock Center is always going I think
Avatar    Fri. 2/28/14 12:53pm Brian in UK:

A funny thing happens some times when the stream dips out. It rebuffers and comes back as the main station programme ie if it were Doug's show it would change to Keili's. Any one else have the same effect.
  Fri. 2/28/14 12:53pm LovecraftDude888:

a few ice rinks out on LI too, but most pay at least to some degree, or part of the LI parks depts. etc.
Avatar    Fri. 2/28/14 12:53pm Stanley:

I found WFMU via a link on the fansite Beefheart.com. It described it as the 'best station in the world'.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 12:54pm glenn:

glen jones' website has a link to weird new jersey, which i find endlessly fascinating.
Avatar    Fri. 2/28/14 12:54pm Uncle Michael:

Hey Tate...glad you could be here.
  Fri. 2/28/14 12:54pm LovecraftDude888:

UM my apologies, I hadn't realized you were in fact a DJ on here! or blanked on it..oh brother
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 12:54pm Doug Schulkind:

Actually, there is a streaming outfit in the Aussie outback that's better. But then again, it involves standing in an actual stream. And there are poisonous snakes and stuff. We are at least much safer.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 12:54pm earrie:

In dialup days there was WNUR out of Northwestern U in Evanston, WWOZ out of New Orleans, and then, what the is this? WFMU in Jersey City.
Avatar    Fri. 2/28/14 12:55pm Stanley:

@Brian - you sure you're not developing strange powers?
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 12:56pm glenn:

stanley, i discovered wfmu through yo la tengo's site. my gateway show was either meghan or michael shelley, i can't remember which.

Stanley, best station in the known or unknown universe.
Jeez I need a beer now.

i had heard fmu once or twice during time home from college, but it was on sept. 14, 1992, the first day of my first real post-college job, when i was immersed in it. my new boss said, "i listen to this weird college radio station. if it ever bugs you, i can change the channel." it was a touching-the-monolith moment. i was pledging by the next marathon.

No, you are blameless, Uncle Michael, and I apologize for inadvertently causing you consternation. I was just making a general remark about supermarket usage fail. I would never stoop to criticizing your grammar. That would be bush league.

@Gaylord & Gary. Thanks. Gear.
Avatar Fri. 2/28/14 1:40pm Doug Schulkind:

Apropos of nothing, it's likely that Queen Street has changed quite a bit since I was last there, in the 1990s. Nothing but hookers, donut shops and banks back then — and yes, I see the correlation.
