Hi, Matt. Been a while, but looking forward to this premiums ep!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm
Matt F:

Hi kat. Me too! I just hope that some of these CDRs that have been moldering on the WFMU library shelves are still playable. We'll see!
Avatar 1:58pm
kat330:

Sure it will be like the fresh breeze blowing through our wide-open windows -- yes, 70 degrees here this aft.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm
listener james from westwood:

good thursday, matt and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm
listener james from westwood:

we're as close to that sort of weather in northern nj as we've been in weeks. 48 deg. and in full melt.
Avatar 2:03pm
kat330:

You should get this by tomorrow. Although, that pattern's not been so evident this winter. We've had very little snow here.
Avatar 2:05pm
kat330:

Dirty trombone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm
Matt F:

Is that the same as a rusty trombone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm
listener james from westwood:

is that the same as a rusty venture?
Avatar 2:07pm
kat330:

Ha, I almost said that it certainly is not a *rusty* trombonist.

That CDR needs to be re-burned. Sorry folks...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm
Uncle Michael:

What a song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm
Matt F:

Can't decide if I like this version or Dusty Springfield's better. Let's call it a draw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm good with that.
Avatar 2:24pm
kat330:

Organ diddling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm

Wow. I missed this vintage calypso premium. Sounds like it could be a belter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm
Matt F:

Irwin did two volumes. Both killers.
Avatar 2:30pm
kat330:

This great song was part of my mom's gospel trio repertoire.

The Great Wandu:

Have you heard Carmen McRae's version of "Breakfast" backed by Dixie Flyers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm
Matt F:

Wandu- I have not! Gotta check that one out. I remember reading that she did some stuff with Dickinson & co.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm
Doug Schulkind:

Maybe me all-time favorite DJ premium was the one where Kevin Nutt filled a DVD-R with every track he played in a year's worth of Sinners Crossroad shows. Oh em gee!
  2:42pm
Andy S.:

"The Great Wandu" has invoked a fine Carmen McRae album, JUST A LITTLE LOVIN' (Atlantic SD-1568, 1970). Recorded at Criteria in Miami with the Dixie Flyers, it includes songs by Tom Waits, Tony Joe White, and Willie Dixon along with "Breakfast In Bed" and the title track. Also look for Carmen's versions of the Brian Wilson songs "Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)" and "I Guess I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" on another Atlantic LP, the title of which escapes me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm
Brian in UK:

Up to the mark, Matt.

The lovely Laura was on the BBC the other day, playing a tune and talking. Over here touring.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm
listener james from westwood:

this pig cut has gotta be rex, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm
listener james from westwood:

boom! yes indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm
Matt F:

Thanks fer checkin in, Andy. I'm not as up on Carmen McRae's works as I oughta be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
Matt F:

This CD is tore up also. I knew this might be a problem.
Avatar 2:46pm
Monica:

sorry bout that, matt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm
Matt F:

It's OK, Mo! Next time go with maxell or memorex!
  2:51pm
Andy S.:

Ken Freedman once told me: "Andy, you're not supposed to be able to listen to WFMU all the time." That Black Lodge Singers track brought his sage words to mind...
Avatar 2:52pm
kat330:

Monica (& Laura), just means the really good stuff's been played over and over again. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm
Uncle Michael:

A person could start a pretty good radio station if the entire library was nothing but WFMU DJ premiums.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm
Brian in UK:

Phew
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm
Jeff Golick:

(lurk 2: the enlurkening)
Avatar 3:05pm
kat330:

Hey, Jeff, thanks so much for IDing our mystery dude on the Squeezebox!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm
Stanley:

No Monica premium this year (sob!)
Avatar 3:07pm
kat330:

Bigger mystery now is how he's become WFMU's default image! We have never programmed any Internet radio for WNYC, period, so it's still so weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm
Doug Schulkind:

Matt, I included Carlos Malcolm's "Bonanza" on a past premium (I forget which one), so even your mic breaks are hewing to the theme.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm
Jeff Golick:

@kat330; Weird, indeed. Are you 100% sure that's who it is?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm
Matt F:

Haha, yeah Doug, I saw that while poking through the library. Must have missed that the first time around. Ponderosa Stomp!
Avatar 3:10pm
kat330:

Absolutely sure. THe exact photo we see is on Brian's website.
Avatar 3:12pm
kat330:

Never realized the baldness because there are always the WFMU call letters and other text over the top of his head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm
Jeff Golick:

"Headphone pattern baldness."

Avatar 3:16pm

@Jeff: Philo sent him a Twitter hoping Brian himself might shed some light, but probably he'll never even see the tweet.
  3:16pm
drr:

I heard that Timi Yuro and thought it was like a deeper voiced Dinah Washington.
Avatar 3:16pm
Monica:

check's in the mail, matt:) doug, you've got more timi than any of us now!
Avatar 3:17pm
kat330:

Ahhhh.... love this....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm
Doug Schulkind:

Timi is not for the timid, I've always said.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm
Matt F:

You have hundreds of Yuros, Doug. You're rich!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm
Brian in UK:

Missing you Monica.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm
Brian in UK:

@kat what photograph?
Avatar 3:21pm
kat330:

And this -- such a perfect soundtrack for a spring-like day. Thanks M & M!
Avatar 3:22pm
kat330:

@Brian: Not you, Brian -- Brian Lehrer, the ubiquitous image appearing in the image viewer of our Squeezebox digital radio for about the last month when first tuning into WFMU.
Avatar 3:23pm
kat330:

It's like the pixel equivalent of pirating a radio signal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm
Brian in UK:

Sounds unpleasant. Is it still there?
Avatar 3:26pm
Monica:

back atcha, brian in uk + stanley. thx.
Avatar 3:27pm
kat330:

No, not unpleasant at all. Just I'm a kurious kat and like to get to the bottom of such weirdnesses. There are only a handful of DJ images we ever see anyway: fxo, Irene, Bryce and, the one remaining the longest beyond Lehrer, SM Ken's Metropolis dude.
  3:31pm
The Great Wandu:

@Andy S. I second all that with one caveat--there's no Tom Waits covers on "Just a Little Lovin'" but no matter--a fine fine record and worth tracking down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
listener james from westwood:

i would also have believed this neuman cut to have been from the spazz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm
Gary:

I can't believe I was seduced back into the comments by belching
Avatar 3:35pm
kat330:

[OT @Brian: Just turned on the Squeezebox and, sure enough, it IS Mr. Lehrer showing for Fabio's program. We mostly listen to Drummer on the Grace Digital, which displays no images, just text.]
Avatar 3:39pm
Scott C.:

Does anyone know who played on "It's A Gas" by Alfred E. Neuman? I mean, besides the usual gang of idiots?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
Matt F:

The Fonebone Brothers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
listener james from westwood:

gary, in movie blurb talk, that comment would be "i ... was ... seduced ... by belching"
Avatar 3:42pm
Monica:

right on with the right on, matt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: that would also be the linkbait version (+ AND YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED NEXT!)

Avatar 3:54pm
kat330:

So again, thanks, Matt, for all this fresh air to accompany the fresh air filling our home this afternoon! S'long, all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm
efd:

The takeaway here, aside from the wealth of awesome music available on WFMU DJ's premium CDs, is that you should digitize and back up your premium CDs immediately upon receipt.
  3:57pm
Andy S.:

Probably I don't have to tell you that this disc (w/"Jordan River") is also noisily defective.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
Doug Schulkind:

Sin, Matt, sin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm
Matt F:

Indeed. Also, siometimes a computer will read the defective disc properly and a new copy can be reburned. It seems to be happening with discs 10 or more years old...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm
Gary:

Thanks for the Premium Thrills, Matt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm
listener james from westwood:

many thanks for yet another excellent pre-marathon show idea!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm
Uncle Michael:

Thanks Matt...the hours...they fly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm

Great show, Matt. Thanks! The premium archives, they are deep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm
