Favoriting February 11, 2014: Love Unlimited

Valentine's Day is this Friday. If you're single you probably dread it. If not, you're most likely utterly unprepared. A recent Saturday Night Live commercial parody pulled the lid back on the last-minute, thoroughly thoughtless nature of most Valentine's Day gifts. On today's Aerial View I'd like to hear from the ladies: Is Valentine's Day important to you? What's the worst gift you ever got? The best? And from the men I'd like to know the most romantic gesture you've ever made. A whirlwind trip to Paris? An incredible piece of jewelry? Maybe some free plumbing work or carpentry? I'd also like to hear some "Words of Love": poetry composed to woo someone. Here are some examples from the 2012 Valentine's Day Aerial View and here's "Crappy Advice To The Lovelorn" from 2013.

I'm having the same trouble with my wedding ring, though I haven't lost it yet. Some stomach bugs earlier this year caused some serious weight loss. I've been constantly checking to make sure it hasn't fallen off without me noticing.

i lost weight pretty quickly after i got married and it wouldn't stay on. it was only stainless steel so you couldn't resize it and it's been on the shelf over the kitchen sink for the last 9 years. but it's there.

So glad you found it Chris! I recently got married and I'm really afraid of loosing mine. Buy a new one to wear and always save the old one. At least thats what I would do. i'm not a hugely sentimental person but sending in the one your wife put on your finger to get a new one seems weird. Just wear a new one and save the old one in a drawer somewhere.

I don't want to get my ring resized cuz its gold and I feel like if they make it smaller, they're stealing gold from me.

Phil from San Mateo:

Chris: I have an answer to your large wedding ring problem. I need to finish something here at work but will call in about 20 minutes. -Phil

IT'S A PIECE OF JEWELRY. who cares really at the end of the day? all this baloney about three months of the guys salary - it's blood diamonds for pete's sake.
Avatar 6:29pm
steve:

we recently got my deceased grandmother's diamond wedding ring appraised - it's apparently worth a large fraction of a years salary. she and my grandfather weren't rich, they were working class. why on Earth would anyone spend that much money on a damn piece of jewelery??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm
Mike East:

@steve - I got recently got my grandmother's wedding ring, too, from her first husband. Though I haven't had it appraised, its a very small humble diamond in a very plain setting. I put it away for my daughter...for whatever she wants to do with it.

I gotta slow down on the comments...my spelling/grammar are starting to suffer. I'll be lurking.
Avatar 6:32pm
steve:

we thought the ring was fairly humble as well and were shocked by how much it was worth! im happy to say, we're all doing well enough that its going in the "family museum".

}@steve:

Back in your grandmothers day, what did the marriage commitment mean for a woman? Did it maybe require a sign that the guy was serious?
Avatar 6:37pm
steve:

thats a great point
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm
dale:

...and how much was it worth then?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm

}@steve:

My gold wedding ring (I'm a husband) kept getting smashed and pinching my finger, like by heavy boards during a carpentry project. Gold is a soft metal, see. Finally, while shoeing a horse, the thing caught on a shoe nail and damn near got my finger ripped off when he went sideways. So thank God, my wife of 27 years no longer requires me to wear the "taken" token. And I live up to that trust. Just saying- rings are impractical for some of us guys, sorry.
