  Fri. 1/17/14 3:30pm LovecraftDude888:

91.1 is back. Nice to have that pure analog sound again.

The best thing Twisted Sister ever did was their appearance in front of that panel on "objectionable" music and lyrics.
  Fri. 1/17/14 3:35pm LovecraftDude888:

haha I forgot the transmitter was being repaired since thursday etc. dats cool. anyway, I was never a hair or "glam" metal guy really back in the day...most of those bands I hated or were indifferent to. TS yeah I agree. They were huge on LI of course for ages, and still are, but I'd take THEM over Billy Joel any day of the week! And God, i wish the Stray Cats were still going.

I also kept being told Joan Jett was a LI girl years ago, but she only lived here for a while later on...or now does, or something, but not in the 70s or 80s....I dunno why they said that. She stayed with Kenny Laguna in Long Beach LI for awhile while writing songs and stuff

David Lee Roth is God.
  Fri. 1/17/14 3:49pm LovecraftDude888:

David Lee Roth...urgh.. I kind of liked the early to mid Van Halen despite myself...but still not my fave band of the time in that vein, they were ok. DLR such a total obnoxious egomaniac, of course. But that's nothing new. I know people who just despised VH from Day One...."too much spandex"
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 3:49pm Fuzzy:

I wouldn't mind sitting down and having a couple of beers with David Lee Roth -- he's quite an interesting guy, actually.

Eddie's guitar playing made up for the defaults of DLR in the early days for me.

Alex Hill
Did you mix that version
With the revolution
Can't find it
  Fri. 1/17/14 3:51pm LovecraftDude888:

I always admired Eddie for his guitar..for sure. But more into Dave Gilmour by far, for many reasons. Although it's a whole other style
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 3:53pm Caryn:

Um, Kurt, that Huutajat track is from their "Six National Anthems" EP. The '94 cd combines that and the H.Y.V.Ä. EPs together.
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 3:55pm Mark Helsten:

I like gilmour more as well, but Eddie is very fluid and natural sounding, which I always appreciate. ANd one of the few that plays that style that I will stop and listen to.
  Fri. 1/17/14 3:56pm LovecraftDude888:

wow reading the Polar Vortex will return next week..along with a new phenom, THE ARCTIC MATRIX which will crush the PV like a grape
  Fri. 1/17/14 3:57pm LovecraftDude888:

Mark..agreed, I dig him, and I like the early VH especially, up to 1984...after that, it got a bit dodgy I thought and God Sammy Hagar..and his 3 lock box fookin hell
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 3:58pm DCE:

please tell me the Polar Vortex is not coming back.
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 3:58pm Caryn:

But then again, the cd release was usually referred to as H.Y.V.Ä. as well, now that I think about it, with the "Six National Anthems" being more of a subtitle, so... never mind.
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 3:59pm DCE:

forcast is chillier next week for sure but not POLAR VORTEX CHILLY
  Fri. 1/17/14 3:59pm LovecraftDude888:

i came to the realization that an amplifier is an instrument too, and as such, you need to learn to "play it" the same as you'd learn to play your guitar.
anyway, turn your guitar volume right down, then crank your amp full up, and roll the treble back to zero. you'll grok at the tone.
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:14pm LovecraftDude888:

I'm a lefty guitarist as well, used to be such a pain in arse, now it's not a big deal. But I hate always hav. to transcribe things. I might try righty at some point....maybe.

Ol' Ollie was the guitarist for the Rutles on all their classic hits. Never appeared onscreen, though. And Halsey was the drummer, for that matter.
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 4:16pm Caryn:

Heh, the cheese guy and DCE's cracker comment reminds me of the time a bunch of celebs discussed an old celeb couple's autobiography, where they talked about how the man would - at parties - put cottage cheese on his penis, place it between two crackers and shout "Hey everyone, I'm f-ing crackers!" The one thing the commenting celebs had to say was how the cottage cheese was completely unnecessary for the joke. I appreciate how they didn't act shocked, but rather just pointed that out.

Hah, glenn, that reminds me of this: www.dailymail.co.uk...
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 4:21pm glenn:

“Ollie’s music involved many diverse elements. Primarily, perhaps (since this is what first attracted attention), he could play very fast and was the first to discover how to do it. Forget Van Halen, Satriani [and others]; no one has matched his technique. Second, and more importantly, Halsall possessed a melodic sense that transcends any formal analysis. Besides Hendrix, only two others stand in the same league – Richard Thompson and Django Reinhardt.”
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 4:23pm Kurt Gottschalk:

wow! lots of songs and lots of talk today. thanks for being here, y'alls! pvt to mwing, yes, ha, duh, especially diana ross, you should do your show a different night every week! talk to ken about that.
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:23pm LovecraftDude888:

I also found out with guitar amps, even small ones, you can get diff. sounds from different ones sometimes without FX...like the Voxs have a nice grungy fuzz at a certain gain level, even minus a pedal. Things like that. But each one is different for sure. Gotta know what you want out of the amp and any FX, etc. and what guitar you're plugging into it. I like the Fender Mustang I so far cause it's just versatile.
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 4:23pm 37:

here here glenn.... with ollie, every single note counted.... those Patto albums kick butt... and he was a pretty good vibes player as well

I picked up a Vox Night Train over the summer--15w of pure fury. Perfect for recording in the basement whilst the childrens sleep
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 4:29pm Caryn:

I can relate to the neighbour thing. Kurt's show starts at 10 p.m. our time, so I can never really listen particularly loud. Heck, due to the time difference, a lot of the shows I listen to start near or even after midnight. It's a pain.
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 4:29pm Carmichael:

I have a Fender Princeton, bought it new when I was a teen. I plug several guitars into it and have always found something unique. I have never played a Gibson through it, though, just Fenders and a Gretsch. And a ton of acoustics.
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 4:31pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i have a princeton as well. those are sweet, sweet amplifiers.

I'd love to try a Gretsch...never even touched one
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 4:31pm Fuzzy:

@LCD888: I hear ya -- I don't spend nearly enough time with the amp, mostly play my Martin DRS1 unplugged. As far as noise control goes: the amp has a headphone jack, you know...:-)
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 4:32pm glenn:

don't touch one unless you can afford to buy one, that's my advice.
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:32pm paula pc:

I could listen to this for about 10 hrs straight
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:32pm LovecraftDude888:

a Princeton should be quite versatile and loud enough even at a moderate vol. or gain, even clean. good amps! I heard the Night Train Voxs are really cool, too but need to push them through a cab or whatever usually
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:33pm LovecraftDude888:

I know thank God the Fender has a headphone out and all that. I like to play "live" though often, too.

yeah, I saw some lower-priced Gretsches and thought if they're that cheap...they're probably THAT CHEAP.
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:36pm LovecraftDude888:

the bridge lower part warped out..piece o junk
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 4:36pm DCE:

no one can afford Richenbachers, they're ridiculous!
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:37pm LovecraftDude888:

DCE..yeah they are really expensive that's for sure. ah well. and no copies available which is irritating. someone told me at the Big Star show in 2009, that the Danelectro 12s are almost like Rickys sort of. But no lefty ones.
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 4:37pm Carmichael:

My Gretsch is a '69 Roc Jet, nitron drum black. I picked it up from a guy who was moving and selling off his crap. It's essentially the same one that George Harrison is holding on the cover of Cloud Nine (his is a '59, I think), but apportioned slightly differently.

Marta, it's them darn crickets! In the middle of winter now!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 4:37pm northguineahills:

woohoo! Finally got my unemployment snafu fixed. Now I just need a hard copy of my last pay stub, can't remember the last time I got one of those.
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:38pm LovecraftDude888:

oh no unemployment...I haven't had to deal with them for ages thank God. Hell! Govt. hell
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 4:38pm still b/p:

Lefty friend of mine had an acoustic made for him (free!). So happy to have pick guard on the appropriate side o' the hole, and gets a kick from fret dots visible on the side of the neck after never seeing them in his long-time make-do world.
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:39pm adam_nspy:

Damn
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:39pm LovecraftDude888:

haha yeah that's prob. how I learned taking lessons years ago...with some restrung crap nylon string job. urghh! Nowadays you can buy good lefty guitars
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:40pm LovecraftDude888:

I once had to go to LICity unemployment office near Queens Plaza, 1996, cause my pub. job the co. closed and fired all of us! en masse. Was hell. lead us not into Queens Plaza
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:41pm LovecraftDude888:

wow this reminds me of that Morton Subotnick dude. wacky nutty synth noises in 5.1
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 4:41pm glenn:

the best value for an electric 12 string is the danelectro dc 59.
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 4:41pm steve:

LD888 - i found myself at Guitar Center last weekend and was surprised by the lefty section selection, i think it even had its own neon sign
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:41pm LovecraftDude888:

glenn..right, so i was told by some dude at the Big Star bklyn concert....he drove up from Baltimore, poor bugger
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:42pm LovecraftDude888:

Steve..right, Gcenter is coming along, I bought most of my lefties there. Or one at Sam Ash which was my Takamine ac.
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:43pm LovecraftDude888:

they even had a Taylor baby lefty which I could not believe, but the Takamine was more versatile so...
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 4:44pm steve:

yeah, i hadnt been to a GC in a while. even more surprising was there not a single analog synthesizer, not even the little cheapo Korg ones and the like.
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 4:44pm Fuzzy:

I hereby resolve to play a lot more than I do now to justify my recent Martin acquisition; she's a gently-used beauty that I found on Ebay (yipes I know but it worked out fine -- sounds and smells awesome!)

(Sorry, can't resist: www.youtube.com... )
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:44pm LovecraftDude888:

I went down to GC again 3 weeks ago as I was saying on here to get the Shure 550 headphones....to avoid noise up in this piece..haha.
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:46pm LovecraftDude888:

a Martin you cannot go wrong with. I heard guys feuding over those vs. Taylors at GC a few years ago....I think the Martins are just better overall.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 4:47pm glenn:

a nice smelling guitar IS a bonus. some of them reek of cigarette smoke and puke.
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 4:47pm Fuzzy:

A GC sales manager turned me on to the DRS1 -- I had to get one! And I need to find a lefty pickguard for it, speaking of those...
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 4:47pm northguineahills:

Yeah, b/tn my profile glitching online, and the customer assistants gave me wrong advice. So, I missed out on 3 weeks of unemployment pay. My old job may come back, but they have gotten the priority assessment from DeBlasio to see whether there will be funding for my project.
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:48pm LovecraftDude888:

NGH oh Lord. wankers!!! total wankery. That sucks man.
thought you wrote customer assailants at first!
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 4:48pm Fuzzy:

It's Sapele wood -- has a lovely scent kind of like clove cigarettes. Open the case and breathe deep!
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 4:49pm Carmichael:

My 1st guitar cost my mom 3 books of S&H Green Stamps. It ws plastic. The 2nd one was a Sears Silvertone. My brother sat on the neck and broke it.
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:50pm LovecraftDude888:

an ex gf of mine gave me a Hondo nylon string once and it was really wretched
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:52pm LovecraftDude888:

man, was just reading up on what happened with Dave from The Dead Milkmen in 2004...I never heard the whole story...now I did. That's awful, man. I read some of these stories and I'm like....I dunno at least I'm not that bad off.
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 4:53pm Fuzzy:

My first guitar was a Norma acoustic that my great grandma got me for my 9th or 10th birthday back in the good old '70s...got broken somewhere along the line, don't remember when/how...
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 4:53pm Carmichael:

He he, I had a Hondo once back in the 70s. It was so-so. I do have a Martin and a Taylor, and honestly I prefer the Taylor. The neck is so silky smooth, which makes the action faster for my smallish hands. And it smells great, also. Koa wood ...
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 4:54pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i know i'm way behind but great big orange gretsch jazzbox, single cutaway. *sigh*
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 4:54pm Caryn:

@ngh: feel for you. Wrong advice from the customer assistants made me miss 3 months of pay a few years back. Honestly, what's the point of them if they don't know what they're talking about!?!
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:55pm LovecraftDude888:

Carm..hrmm haha Hondo..oh no!! I'd rather have an Ishiro Honda. Anyway, yeah Taylors are surely fine guitars, too. I'll take any of 'em.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 4:56pm glenn:

if you ever find an old traynor at a good price, scoop it up. fantastic amps.
  Fri. 1/17/14 4:57pm LovecraftDude888:

heard of Traynors, right. Will try.

Wow Kurt, those pumpkin orange guitars were so funky. They've gone beyond dated and back to retro cool. They called them "Pumpkin Jets".

Mary...yeah some of the better lefties are at least that, and up. Oh, the guy from Martha and der Muffins wrote me last month..told me about lefty shop in Florida....prices were out of sight
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 5:01pm glenn:

mary wing! are you an axe wielder?
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 5:02pm Carmichael:

Yeah Glenn, Silvertones came off the same factory line as Kay, Harmony, and I believe Danelectro. Their *body* was just glued wood shavings, like plywood.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 5:02pm Mary Wing:

Oh no, Glenn. I can play the radio, though!
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 5:03pm glenn:

they were totally made of plywood, but those pups are fantastic.
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 5:04pm Fuzzy:

My first electric: a '65 Fender Mustang with non-original psychedelic Sharpie-on-White finish that I bought in San Diego for $150 in '86. Pawned it for ridiculously-low amount in '93...still kicking myself today. Sole picture that I have of it resides in Martin guitar case.
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 5:04pm Carmichael:

Yes, people spend good money these days to get their guitars to sound like that.
Avatar Fri. 1/17/14 5:04pm glenn:

they've been reissued as kays, and apparently they're pretty good.

I plugged into a Fender Blues Deville a few years ago at GCenter and the manager almost brained me, heehee! Wow was that louddddd but someone had left master up too high

KG, there's also supposed to be a new documentary out on Mingus...
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 5:09pm Fuzzy:

@Carmichael: Harmony Sovereign made out of plywood too? I saw a nice unstrung one in a guitar shop window in Juneau back in '02-'03, with the pickup built into the bottom of the neck...shop was never open though, so I never got to check it out further.
  Fri. 1/17/14 5:09pm LovecraftDude888:

then there's the EClapton Fender ltd. amp.ha! a mere Grand.
  Fri. 1/17/14 5:13pm LovecraftDude888:

hrmm you can get a Vox Night Train ministack for $300, that's not bad at all. Keen! I think I'll stick with the headphone one.
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 5:14pm Mike East:

damn I missed out on some amp talk. I've had people ask me for those Clapton Fenders (for rentals) and I tell them to bring their own.
Fri. 1/17/14 5:16pm Listening Out There:

...or...I could be wrong. Am trying to find the article I read recently on Mingus. Am only finding info about the 1968 documentary. Sigh...
  Fri. 1/17/14 5:17pm LovecraftDude888:

I dunno how good those Clapton specials are, but willing to bet they ain't shabby! hehe
Avatar    Fri. 1/17/14 5:17pm Carmichael:

@Fuzzy: Only the solid body electrics were made out of pressed fiberboard. The acoustics actually had real wood from real trees.
  Fri. 1/17/14 5:18pm LovecraftDude888:

one thing about Sears now....you can count on it for A. pink floyd shirts and B. Carhartt jackets. naught else.

I was thinking of inventing a 24-string and really driving myself insane hehe had a vision of that a few years ago...anyway, might order up a Vox Night Train headphone thingie. I might go for that in a bigg way
  Fri. 1/17/14 5:28pm LovecraftDude888:
