  Fri. 1/10/14 3:02pm LovecraftDude888:

har, 1982 there...Oh god I was forced to go see E.T. around then...arghh
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 3:04pm Caryn:

Nice groovy start to the show, Kurt!
  Fri. 1/10/14 3:05pm LovecraftDude888:

I had no idea that was how Teena Marie died...good lord. Awful. Hit by a bloody hotel room pic. frame and then seizures. Whewwww
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 3:06pm Mark Helsten:

That William Parker sounds very South African
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 3:10pm Caryn:

Yeah, lovecraft, but at least there are worse ways to go. Like the guy who supposedly died from an atomic wedgie. Sheesh.
  Fri. 1/10/14 3:11pm LovecraftDude888:

Yeah true..I hadn't read up on the wedgie yet but shall....oof.
  Fri. 1/10/14 3:13pm LovecraftDude888:

wow, nice. But why atomic...why not a Marine Semper Fi Brute Force Wedgie?
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 3:16pm fred:

Good afternoon Kurt and listeners
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 3:16pm Mark Helsten:

that animated gif makes me feel nauseated... is it just me?
  Fri. 1/10/14 3:17pm LovecraftDude888:

then there's the Fiddler on the Roof girl murder...hooboy These people are wacked out, man. Wacked right out. Some HS girl murdered by some obsessed classmate. People need to cultivate some hobbies.
  Fri. 1/10/14 3:17pm LovecraftDude888:

it's a bit queasy
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 3:18pm Kurt Gottschalk:

hey everyone, thanks for tuning in. stick around for dot wiggin of the shaggs in the final hour!
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 3:19pm Caryn:

I don't know what disturbed me about that newsstory more, the fact that the guy died by suffocating on his own underwear (ugh) or the little detail added by the news agency about the earlier case where some little kid had to have one of his testicles reattached to his body after being given a wedgie? Seriously? And that gif ain't helping me keep from barfing.
  Fri. 1/10/14 3:20pm LovecraftDude888:

Oh me oh my. Glad I hadn't read that bit. Makes me afraid to walk outside these days...just going to Dunkin Donuts is fraught...with peril
  Fri. 1/10/14 3:21pm LovecraftDude888:

ha, The Shaggs, far out. I once sat there and listened to Giorgio Gomelsky have The Shaggs explained to him via Howie Pyro of D Generation fame...that was a laugh
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 3:24pm fleep:

Don't wear underwear to Dunkin Donuts.
  Fri. 1/10/14 3:25pm LovecraftDude888:

nobody there will care
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 3:26pm northguineahills:

Roy...man he was an awesome man, w/ many talents.
  Fri. 1/10/14 3:26pm LovecraftDude888:

I heard about Baraka, that sux. He had Diabetes and such for years
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 3:31pm Caryn:

Very sad. I just hope there is no third, like the "rule" goes. Or maybe Phil Everly was the first of the three? Man, this January is morbid.
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 3:32pm fred:

Shit, I hadn't heard about Amiri Baraka's death. I saw him perform three years ago, his charisma was something to experience. It was supposed to be with Cecil Taylor but the show started late and they did separate sets. Someone who worked at the venue told me that they had a "disagreement" before the show. It's very possibly BS though
  Fri. 1/10/14 3:34pm LovecraftDude888:

Ho boy! That's cool you got to that performance. I still have to catch up more with Cecil Taylor as well. I put the Thelon. Monk Columbia box on order from library and still waiting for that to show up!
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 3:36pm northguineahills:

I remember in the before times, watching Roy Campbell, Daniel Carter, and others do a 3 hour set at the Pink Pony. Roy probably played about 15 instruments. Fun night.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 3:36pm glenn:

hey, caryn's back. we (i) missed you.
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 3:37pm fred:

@glenn: me too, that makes it a "we"
  Fri. 1/10/14 3:38pm LovecraftDude888:

Wild. Before my time I'm assuming. I meant to say I have a good friend who is good buds with Daniel Carter! I met him briefly last year at some gig in Queens of all places. He sits in with their band sometimes he seems like a super sweet guy
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 3:40pm Caryn:

Aw, thanks, glenn and fred! It's nice to be back. My workplace moved, so I've been rather busy. New working hours also cut into listening time. And of course the holidays meant I wasn't listening in live. Been mostly trawling the archives.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 3:41pm northguineahills:

Daniel Carter is one of the special people of the universe. He sits in w/ my ROTC group about once a year. The Pink Pony gig I'm thinking of was 2001.
  Fri. 1/10/14 3:42pm LovecraftDude888:

Oh ok crazee. I don't know if I've ever been to the Pink Pony, I see where it is now...weird maybe once ages ago but don't think so. I thought I'd been to every venue. Was at some place on Ludlow 3 yrs ago to see The Golden Palominos...Living Room?
  Fri. 1/10/14 3:44pm LovecraftDude888:

oMG nevermind I walked into The Pink Pony that day I think!! Just to grab a coffee or use restroom or both..haha! During the afternoon. I know the place....
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 3:45pm fred:

@Caryn: I'm happy you have a workplace and working hours, even if they deprive us of your company. Those unemployment days were overstaying their welcome
  Fri. 1/10/14 3:46pm LovecraftDude888:

or maybe I'm thinking of someplace similar south of Delancey....there's a ton of cafes like that over there, just east off Orchard? Anyway, sounds brilliant.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 3:47pm Caryn:

@fred: yeah, I mean, it's only a one-year job, but certainly better than nothing.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 3:49pm northguineahills:

If my brain still works (debatable), The Pink Pony was on Ludlow south of Houston. Pretty sure Kurt can set me strait. It was a cafe w/ coffee and small bites, w/ a small performance space in the back.
  Fri. 1/10/14 3:50pm LovecraftDude888:

Caryn, yeah that's good news. The Job market is hellish. I'm on Disability....I'm working on a PT job and hiring new staff to like, make it happen, but living on LI, and not being up for commuting much to NYC anymore...it's tough
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 3:51pm northguineahills:

Yeah, believe the Living Room was part of the complex. Gotta see if my contract has been extended, be back soon!.
  Fri. 1/10/14 3:51pm LovecraftDude888:

NGhills, yes, right, just scoped the place out. The cafe I was thinking of was east of Orchard on Grand or something, I had parked the car temporarily there. Then got a ticket later for no good reason on Orchard! Grrrr for Golden Palominos...only for them
  Fri. 1/10/14 3:55pm LovecraftDude888:

I think it was a cafe on Broome St, tons of great places over there. Always liked Broome!
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 3:56pm Caryn:

Yeah, lovecraft, it's a pain right now. Last time I checked the unemployment office database, within 200 miles of where I live there were about 700 open jobs, and over 10,000 applicants for them. The chances of landing a job are really low, and the lack of a car ain't helping.
  Fri. 1/10/14 3:59pm LovecraftDude888:

oh Caryn....sorry. Yeah, not having a car in certain areas can be really, really debilitating. I have one, but have had some brief times on LI where I had no car, and then when I was in NYC I didn't, but that was NYC. It's scary out there. I might start my own book biz, but...that could be a mistake, given the Internet and the trends going on. I wonder. I can get funding,
apparently. But....is it a folly? So much competition.
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:00pm LovecraftDude888:

we had one record shop open six years ago in Port Washington
and then it closed a few months later. That's how tough that biz is now. I mean, a brick and mortar shop.
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:01pm LovecraftDude888:

Plus there was a guy working there who I had worked with briefly wayyyy back in the 80s! oh nooo!
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:02pm LovecraftDude888:

Caryn what do you do I was curious? I used to be in publishing/editorial work for years in NYC but the pay was like..bad.
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:07pm LovecraftDude888:

had this been around when I was in publishing I would never have even had time to be online during the day. No way.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 4:08pm Caryn:

Well, I've done pretty much everything at some point, but I'm a freelance translator. The 1-year job now is with a non-profit. At the old location, I ran their fundraising shop, but now I'm in charge of their transport office.
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:08pm Bo:

Roy was one of the key players on the scene. RIP Roy.
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:09pm LovecraftDude888:

I see, that's cool, I think translation stuff is still in demand. I once did some database work for Museum of Broadcasting but that was back in 2001 or so....kind of dull, but paid well.
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:10pm Bo:

Seamless, brother, seamless transition .
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:12pm LovecraftDude888:

One thing I never did was food or beverage restaurant work..somehow. Never had the training or personality for it. I could be a good barista....maybe.
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:12pm LovecraftDude888:

but doesn't it pay crap?
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:14pm chester:

This cat is playing some beautiful intervals
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:14pm LovecraftDude888:

nevermind NYC it's like $10 an hour if you're lucky, Barista, I mean.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 4:14pm Caryn:

Well, translation work is somewhat in demand, but no-ones hiring in-house translators, it's all freelance now. Also, if you do technical translation etc. (basically anything besides AV or literature), most companies try to keep costs down by figuring that their engineers or other workers "know the language well enough" to translate things okay enough to be understood, as long as it's not a really exotic language.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 4:16pm Caryn:

I think restaurant work pay is sooooo dependent on where you are (the state, the city, the actual business you work for). You can be making under 3 bucks an hour or over 10 bucks an hour, depending on where you are.
Fri. 1/10/14 4:17pm Greasy Kid Stuff:

Nitrous Oxide
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:17pm LovecraftDude888:

Right, the freelance thing only, gotcha. Oh man. I once did a few weeks at some stupid printing co. near Port Authority, as night Proofreader...IT WAS AWFUL. Work ok, co. insane, run by crazy old Nazi guy....it was really stupid. I walked off it. Restaurant..yeah for sure it varies wildly. Only good thing was being near Port Authority close to subway, fast escape back to Brooklyn!
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 4:18pm Carmichael:

Hey there, Kurt and afternooners/eveningers/early morningites. Waiting for the Dot matrix.
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:20pm blee:

FLIPPER!
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:20pm LovecraftDude888:

You can't even find a Proofreading gig anymore in NY. Or if so, it's legal which is hell.
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:20pm LovecraftDude888:

I love Flipper!
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 4:21pm fred:

I suddenly took a dislike to Flipper's Ha Ha Ha after seeing a very underwhelming live performance
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:21pm LovecraftDude888:

nevermind I'm reading barista it's all tips, plus maybe 8-10 per hour if you are a good boy or girl. Jeez. most of those jobs it's tips but Starbucks you gotta share with 10 other moronss
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:22pm LovecraftDude888:

I know the Ha ha ha Flipper version the orig. only really..I once had the Let Them Eat Jellybeans vinyl punk comp. and that's how I knew it back in der day
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 4:23pm common:

i'm gonna start my own business. i'm gonna sell golden pyramids full of diamonds. sick of working for the man.
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:25pm LovecraftDude888:

sell Sea Monkeys for a living.
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 4:25pm fred:

...I'm not blaming them, nor the venue. The venue had an inspection and had a limiter installed too close to the PA. I think that distance is proportional to the thickness of the wad the inspectors luck onto
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 4:26pm Carmichael:

Ha, Lovecraft! I create, edit and enforce contract law for a government agency. The most boring prose on earth. But, for some twisted reason, I enjoy it. Maybe my brain is out of phase.
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 4:28pm Carmichael:

And also good to see you back on the boards, Caryn.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 4:29pm Caryn:

Hey Carm! Long time no see!
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:30pm LovecraftDude888:

I never did that type of tech. or govt. writing or editorial. Just book, magazine, nonfiction, etc. And I've had pro. stuff of my own published the past few years but it pays like zero. usually.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 4:31pm Caryn:

Oh look, "Scott Walker: 30 Century Man" is on tv again. I may occasionally turn down your show, Kurt, for very brief moments because of it. Mind you, I think I've seen it about 15 times now. I'm slightly obsessed.
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 4:32pm Mike East:

Hey minotaurs!
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 4:33pm Caryn:

Hi Mike!
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:35pm LovecraftDude888:

I bought the Scott Scott Walker album last year and got rid of it, wasn't big into him..I tried. I thought it was more like Tim Buckley or whatever...but wasn't.
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 4:35pm Carmichael:

Caryn, you know he turned 71 yesterday? I was shocked.
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 4:35pm common:

Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 4:36pm common:

bosch...
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 4:37pm Caryn:

@Mike: I kind of love the moment when one of the interviewees goes on about how he's never been able to figure out how a particular guitar part was done, and we immediately cut to an explanation of how it was done.

@lovecraft: I bought the Scott albums (1-4) when I was 13 and never looked back.
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 4:37pm Mark Helsten:

Great version!
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 4:38pm Carmichael:

Lovecraft, try listening to the Walker Brothers' proper stuff 1st and see if it tickles your fancy. And the unofficial consensus seems to be that Scott 4 is the best of the "Scott" series of solo releases.
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:38pm LovecraftDude888:

Ok, will do. I dunno The Walker Bros. much at all, sad to say. sort of.
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:39pm Slim_PicknS:

You are playing some really hot tunes !
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 4:39pm Caryn:

Yeah, the Scott albums in order of greatness, IMO, are basically 2 and 4 battling it out at the top, then 3, then 1.
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:40pm Slim_PicknS:

*reasons to love WFMU*
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 4:40pm Caryn:

I'm presuming this set is gonna be all food-centric. And great.
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:41pm Brett:

That version of Birthday Cake sounded different.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 4:41pm Caryn:

Oh crap, "Montague Terrace in Blue". Turning you down, Kurt.
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 4:41pm Carmichael:

Walker Brothers are Phil Spector-styled, big fat pop tunes featuring Scott's baritone voice.
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 4:41pm fred:

That's funny, I've been going back to Cibo Matto for the past few months, and they've come up a few times on the station recently. Is there some reason?
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 4:42pm fred:

Wow! Lexie Mountain Boys! I hadn't heard them in a while, and only now realized I've missed them
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 4:43pm Caryn:

And I'm back. That was brief. Ooh, Bowie's story. Turning you down again. Dammit.
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 4:43pm Carmichael:

@Caryn: I love the interview pieces with Bowie. Easy to understand why he likes him enough to produce him.
  Fri. 1/10/14 4:44pm LovecraftDude888:

I think the thing was the strings were killing me on the Scott album...was too syrupy or something, for me. but I'll try the Walker Bros. for sure. Anyway, getting off here for now...back later! Cheers
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 4:46pm fred:

Are Lexie Mountain Boys still active? I only saw them once, something like 5 years ago
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 4:47pm Caryn:

I guess the main thing the documentary teaches us is how influencial the desire for nookie has been in this case. Bowie's ex plays Scott's albums for Bowie, Scott learns about Brel from a one night stand, ...
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 4:50pm glenn:

i believe that's nooky. ;)
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 4:52pm Caryn:

Oh, potato potahto, glenn ;)
Avatar    Fri. 1/10/14 4:52pm fred:

This Lexie Mountain Boys track was fantastic
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 4:53pm Caryn:

...got 1st inkling of Scott Walker thru comparison to Julian Cope (whom I idolize - sorta) - altho' the Archdrude I believe eventually disavowed the association - ?? Kevin Ayers immeadiately reminded me of Copey too - altho' I've never heard anyone claim a direct influence there...I like the Baroque self-determination (??) of the Scott Walker I've heard...
- Sounds like...Dot Wiggins !! : )) ...
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 5:56pm Atomic Fire Ball:
