Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

ndbob, UM, that would be good news to a friend of mine who lived in indy from ~96–02, in case he ever goes back (there's a major roleplaying game convention there). he hated the local food options to the point where he taught himself to cook.

There were some really odd performers who recorded for Motown subsidiaries - Paul Peterson, Dorsey Burnette, etc.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 12:48pm efd:

I was wondering if The Messengers were related at all to Michael & The Messengers, who did that great version of "Just Like Romeo And Juliet" on the Nuggets LP, and it seems like they are but after reading their Wikipedia page I'm still not quite sure how.

Wasn't there some "House of the Future" tourist attraction somewhere that was a house made of Styrofoam?
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 1:10pm Jeff Golick:

Oh right! As promised!
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 1:11pm still b/p:

Coincidentally...just before Blades of Grass from Are Not For Smoking, I was checking to see if I remembered correctly that Sherman Hemsley really liked his spliff, which would tie in neatly with the Moving On Up reggae number. I did find out instead that a mixture of PCP and pot or tobacco is known as Sherman Hemsley.
Learning is FUNdamental.

Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 1:14pm Jeff Golick:

I could probably listen to the isolated drum track from this record.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 1:19pm Uncle Michael:

I'm afraid I might need a little extra time to find that, Jeff.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 1:19pm northguineahills:

I have to say, The Complete On The Corner Sessions is one of my favorite releases of all time.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 1:21pm Jeff Golick:

Not to worry. This'll do nicely!

Sadly, Complete On the Corner is one of the Miles "Complete Sessions" boxes I don't have...
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 1:23pm Uncle Michael:

So people didn't like On The Corner when it came out? What the hell?
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 1:24pm Uncle Michael:

I'm not sad Miles & Hendrix didn't happen. I'm sad Miles and Beefheart didn't happen.

Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 1:35pm glenn:

this is so much better than the other cat scratch fever.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 1:35pm Uncle Michael:

a wee bit
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 1:36pm Jeff Golick:

"Jazz people" [ugh] most certainly did NOT like it. It seemed like Miles was "selling out" to the kids.

The "kids," meanwhile, didn't really get it, either. Because: Pete Cosey. Etc. It's a record that needed some time to find its audience -- and for the audience to catch up.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 1:37pm Uncle Michael:

Yeah, pandering to the kids...riiiiight. Radio friendly, that.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 1:37pm Uncle Michael:

I surmise that Betty Davis' impact on Miles was rather immense.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 1:39pm Jeff Golick:

Yup. I think Miles gets to Sly via Betty -- to wildly oversimplify things.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 1:41pm Uncle Michael:

That's a workable nutshell.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 1:43pm pacific standard simon:

Of course, advanced pharmaceuticals had something to do with it.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 1:44pm Andrew Waterloo:

It was all those electric instruments and their lack of authenticity
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 1:45pm Uncle Michael:

All innovation becomes orthodoxy. Resisting ossification is not easy.
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 1:48pm pacific standard simon:

Well, hum-de-dum, gotta run. Thank you for the excellent soundtrack, Michael. Toodles, Doodles!
Avatar Fri. 1/10/14 1:49pm Uncle Michael:

week after week, killer no filler. To quote JB, you're on the one...
Avatar Wed. 7/16/14 1:03am Droll:

I was listening on tiny speakers until "If" started playing and the drums sounded outrageous so I put on cans and the whole thing sounds amazing! Huge production, sounds especially well done for '71.

But now that I have cans on your mic sounds funny. Phase? EQ? There's an echo/delay that brighter than the mic itself... Do you always sound like this?

The Messengers were wearing the veil very thinly. Well written tune, so I'm not entirely surprised about the Motown heritage.

Very imaginative Cat Scratch Fever!

How are you talking over the Tonight Show version of Court of the King Crimson? WHY?! WHY?! WHY?!?!?!

I love Merle, especially this super-depressing stuff.
Avatar Thu. 2/5/15 1:40pm Orpheus:

Thank you Uncle Michael for keeping our song "Can't Find The Time" on the radio waves. Cheers!
