6/8 opener -- nice choice. Coincidentally on a 6/8 kick myself lately.
  Sun. 1/5/14 10:08pm Richard from Venezuela:

Good evening
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:09pm Dave Mandl:

Hey all. @Droll: Yeah, everyone goes through a 6/8 phase.
Avatar Sun. 1/5/14 10:09pm northguineahills:

As you probably know, Doug did a Yusef Lateef tribute last Friday on the GTDS stream, and has done one every year for at least the last four years on his bday which is available in the archives.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...do two 3/4 phases count - ??...
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:10pm Dave Mandl:

@ngh: Hi. Yeah, I know. I could never touch the tributes Doug has done. But I had to play something.
Avatar Sun. 1/5/14 10:11pm fleep:

Love the Google: Type in 'songs in 6/8 time' and wham
metricforum.com...
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:11pm Dave Mandl:

@RRN63: Or do a 7/8 phase and you'll be ahead of the game.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:11pm pacific standard simon:

Some of us go through 6/9 phases... ;)
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:11pm Dave Mandl:

@fleep: Do not trust time signature information on the internet. A lot of it is wrong.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Beatles were fond of a Waltz...
Avatar Sun. 1/5/14 10:13pm Droll:

rrn, Positively NOT, 6/8 should get confused with (confused) common time! I'm early in my 6/8 phase, but my lab experiments are promising. I'll let you know.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:13pm Dave Mandl:

I think that was Lennon mainly? But I may be misremembering.
Avatar Sun. 1/5/14 10:14pm fleep:

@Dave Something on the Internet isn't true? Shocked, I tell you, shocked.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:15pm Dave Mandl:

@fleep: Sorry, man.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:17pm pacific standard simon:

Anything you can do to help me recover from the leather-lunged, Christian singer-songwriter phase one of my co-workers is going through? He has seniority, so I can't crucify him.
Avatar Sun. 1/5/14 10:18pm Droll:

I saw an interview with Becker & Fagen about putting 'Dan back together and they said step one was to buy off-the-shelf transcriptions of their songs so they could go learn them. They said they couldn't find a single correct transcription of anything, most were hopelessly wrong, they ended up relearning the entire catalog mainly by ear.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:18pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: I'm stumped.
Avatar Sun. 1/5/14 10:19pm Droll:

pss, STRYPER!
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:19pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Lots of pop sheet music is wrong. Those guys are full of themselves.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

pss: Can't crucify a Christian - ?? So ! - neither one of you gets fulfilled...Or - do what Bill Hicks recommended: Do anything you want - then say - so you're a Christian - ?? So - forgive me.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:23pm pacific standard simon:

Something certifiably pagan might do the trick -- Harry Partch, or The Fugs, or some such thing.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:25pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...The Monks - ??...
Avatar Sun. 1/5/14 10:25pm fleep:

Has music transcription software improved the accuracy of sheet music?
Avatar Sun. 1/5/14 10:26pm Droll:

pss, You don't like Stryper? They actually did have some chops and good arrangements. King's X is another (former) Christian rock band I like enough to call an influence.
Avatar Sun. 1/5/14 10:27pm Droll:

fleep, As much as word processors have improved the accuracy of written words.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:34pm pacific standard simon:

Droll, the music isn't the problem. The problem is the singer yelling about bowing down, and believing no matter how much God tortures him, and how unreal everything but the one true faith is. Oh, and blaming Jesus for his crappy love life.
  Sun. 1/5/14 10:35pm Fred:

Groundhogs!
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:36pm pacific standard simon:

Maybe some Tull?
  Sun. 1/5/14 10:36pm SnugLife:

Dave Mandl! Were lisiting from CA! Christina Ray and Dave! and Baby snug! Miss you and maybe see you next week!
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:37pm Dave Mandl:

@Fred: I could listen to them all day.
@pss: You know, I was going to play a Tull song but I forgot about it. Maybe I will play it.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:38pm Dave Mandl:

@SnugLife: Hey! Love to everyone!
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:38pm pacific standard simon:

The Groundhogs were nice -- sorta proggy/jazzy.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:39pm Dave Mandl:

Wait, which baby? Not Christina's?
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:41pm Dave Mandl:

@SnugLife: Or soon-to-be-baby?
  Sun. 1/5/14 10:42pm SnugLife:

Yes, thats our nick name of the baby. We are coming to NYC next week. Hope to see you and keep up the awesome DJ job!

Avatar Sun. 1/5/14 10:45pm Droll:

Guru Guru followed by Tull? It's 2014, DM, not 1974!
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:46pm Dave Mandl:

1968.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:46pm Dave Mandl:

...and now we're back to 1605.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:47pm pacific standard simon:

The great thing about getting old is that I'm going to forget everything that's happened in music since 1974.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:48pm pacific standard simon:

I'll be -- wait for it -- LIVING IN THE PAST.
Avatar Sun. 1/5/14 10:48pm Droll:

Guru Guru self titled didn't come out 'til 1973, you silly throwback!
  Sun. 1/5/14 10:49pm SnugLife:

ahhhh Baby Snug gets its first serenade. Thanks Uncle Dave!

You're killing it, tonight, Dave.

Vicki never goes wrong.....(as the title implies)
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 10:58pm pacific standard simon:

It's funny -- there's at least 3 songs in that mix that I used to practice on my uke (without mixing 'em up).
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 11:00pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: Aw, thanks.
@ngh: True. She's a genius.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 11:14pm pacific standard simon:

Ever since you played that Viola da Gamba thing, I've been trying to remember the name of the instrument it reminded me of. Finally found the CD featuring it in my collection -- it's the Baryton, which has 6 bowed strings and 9 plucked strings. Joseph Hayden wrote a ton of music for it.
  Sun. 1/5/14 11:20pm trish:

Great string of music, that.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 11:21pm pacific standard simon:

Hey, you don't follow ME on Tumblr (no E in that, either!)
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 11:24pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: I don't? Sorry, I thought I followed you back. Faux pas. I will correct that.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 11:24pm Dave Mandl:

@trish: Merci.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 11:26pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: Rectified.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 11:26pm Dave Mandl:

Baryton? Don't think I've heard of that.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 11:31pm pacific standard simon:

It's weird. en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 11:36pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: Beautiful.
Avatar Sun. 1/5/14 11:39pm Droll:

DM, You've heard Barrytown! 1974, Pretzel Logic.

Actually, Baryton looks way more fun to listen to than play. It looks almost unplayable! Small wonder that instrument isn't more popular after 300 years...
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 11:41pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Steely Dan? I don't know that record.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 11:46pm pacific standard simon:

Now THAT'S the way to treat a guitar!
Avatar Sun. 1/5/14 11:54pm Droll:

pss, The amp was not spared either. Vacuum tubes may have been injured during that recording.

DM, Our two hours is up already, seems like there should be time for another acoustic drone piece...
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 11:55pm pacific standard simon:

It seems that the extra strings on the baryton are frequently treated as resonating drone strings, since no one has that many fingers. The CD that I have features 6 trios of baryton, viola & cello, by Hayden.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 11:57pm pacific standard simon:

Good times, Droll.
     Sun. 1/5/14 11:57pm 12539:

Thanks, Mr Mandl.
Avatar    Sun. 1/5/14 11:59pm pacific standard simon:

You could go back to three hours, Dave. I wouldn't mind at all.
Avatar    Mon. 1/6/14 12:00am Dave Mandl:

@pss: Thanks!
And thanks for listening, everyone. Have a great week.
Avatar Tue. 1/7/14 1:59pm Estriella:

@Dave Mandl - finally signed up (tried a few years ago and was technically compromised)! Great show. Love the mix - anything that combines classical with quirky contemporary gets my vote!
