6/8 opener -- nice choice. Coincidentally on a 6/8 kick myself lately.

Hey all. @Droll: Yeah, everyone goes through a 6/8 phase.

As you probably know, Doug did a Yusef Lateef tribute last Friday on the GTDS stream, and has done one every year for at least the last four years on his bday which is available in the archives.

...do two 3/4 phases count - ??...
Avatar 10:10pm
Dave Mandl:

@ngh: Hi. Yeah, I know. I could never touch the tributes Doug has done. But I had to play something.

Love the Google: Type in 'songs in 6/8 time' and wham

Avatar 10:11pm

@RRN63: Or do a 7/8 phase and you'll be ahead of the game.

Some of us go through 6/9 phases... ;)

rrn, Positively NOT, 6/8 should get confused with (confused) common time! I'm early in my 6/8 phase, but my lab experiments are promising. I'll let you know.

I think that was Lennon mainly? But I may be misremembering.

@Dave Something on the Internet isn't true? Shocked, I tell you, shocked.

Anything you can do to help me recover from the leather-lunged, Christian singer-songwriter phase one of my co-workers is going through? He has seniority, so I can't crucify him.
Avatar 10:18pm
Droll:

I saw an interview with Becker & Fagen about putting 'Dan back together and they said step one was to buy off-the-shelf transcriptions of their songs so they could go learn them. They said they couldn't find a single correct transcription of anything, most were hopelessly wrong, they ended up relearning the entire catalog mainly by ear.
Avatar 10:18pm
Dave Mandl:

@pss: I'm stumped.

pss, STRYPER!

pss: Can't crucify a Christian - ?? So ! - neither one of you gets fulfilled...Or - do what Bill Hicks recommended: Do anything you want - then say - so you're a Christian - ?? So - forgive me.

Something certifiably pagan might do the trick -- Harry Partch, or The Fugs, or some such thing.

Has music transcription software improved the accuracy of sheet music?
Avatar 10:26pm
Droll:

pss, You don't like Stryper? They actually did have some chops and good arrangements. King's X is another (former) Christian rock band I like enough to call an influence.
Avatar 10:27pm
Droll:

fleep, As much as word processors have improved the accuracy of written words.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm
pacific standard simon:

Droll, the music isn't the problem. The problem is the singer yelling about bowing down, and believing no matter how much God tortures him, and how unreal everything but the one true faith is. Oh, and blaming Jesus for his crappy love life.

Ever since you played that Viola da Gamba thing, I've been trying to remember the name of the instrument it reminded me of. Finally found the CD featuring it in my collection -- it's the Baryton, which has 6 bowed strings and 9 plucked strings. Joseph Hayden wrote a ton of music for it.

DM, You've heard Barrytown! 1974, Pretzel Logic.

Actually, Baryton looks way more fun to listen to than play. It looks almost unplayable! Small wonder that instrument isn't more popular after 300 years...
Avatar 11:41pm
Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Steely Dan? I don't know that record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm

Now THAT'S the way to treat a guitar!
Avatar 11:54pm
Droll:

pss, The amp was not spared either. Vacuum tubes may have been injured during that recording.

DM, Our two hours is up already, seems like there should be time for another acoustic drone piece...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
pacific standard simon:

It seems that the extra strings on the baryton are frequently treated as resonating drone strings, since no one has that many fingers. The CD that I have features 6 trios of baryton, viola & cello, by Hayden.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm

@Dave Mandl - finally signed up (tried a few years ago and was technically compromised)! Great show. Love the mix - anything that combines classical with quirky contemporary gets my vote!
