Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

You have to sort of admire a person who can adopt every public conservative trapping, yet still say his name is "Alice Cooper" with a straight face.
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 12:20pm Uncle Michael:

I have no straight face.
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 12:21pm pacific standard simon:

Nuts of steel, Alice has. It's as if John Boehner went around pronouncing his name the way you'd think it SHOULD be pronounced.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 12:22pm still b/p:

Alice proudly recounts (boasts) that his eye make-up was a reference for Alex's eye style in A Clockwork Orange. Well, fair enough, but there's a difference, maybe, between someone with the film coming up with it as an off the cuff example of what they want to go for, and being a vital influence in a movie's aesthetic and therefore being tres important in wider culture. Alice wants it to be the latter. Guess I'm Scroogey for wanting to say, "Dial it down a little, bro."

Speaking of trout, if you want an exercise in masochism, try reading the biography of Richard Brautigan in its entirety. It begins and ends with him putting a .44 magnum in his mouth.

@pacific standard simon: Which biography did you read? I met one of his biographers and he also tells of Brautigan being found months later in his cabin. Over summer. Ulp!
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 2:10pm glenn:

ewwwww.
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:10pm pacific standard simon:

@Rich - William Hjortsberg. Yup, he did it in September (warm season in the Bay Area) and they didn't find him until 6 weeks later.
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:12pm Rich in Washington:

The Richard Brautigan Museum is pretty close to where I live, in Vancouver Washington.
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:13pm Rich in Washington:

I like his spoken word LP, which was originally to come out on Apple Records, as I guess Lennon or McCartney were fans of his writing
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:14pm ndbob:

scrolling back here.. @Simon I'd bet i hated Brazil as much as your wife did
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:15pm ndbob:

There was a long Brautigan bio that came out fairly recently, but I've never talked to anyone who read it
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:16pm pacific standard simon:

I have an mp3 of that album but haven't listened to it yet. It was supposed to be the third release on Zapple, but Apple folded first. Then it was released on Harvest.
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:17pm pacific standard simon:

@ndbob - Now you have.
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:18pm ndbob:

@simon and I see you have - think I will pass on it
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:20pm pacific standard simon:

The odd thing is, I've read very little Brautigan -- The Abortion, and some other odds and ends. I was curious about what made him tick, though, and now I'm far less interested in reading more.
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:21pm ndbob:

I've read quite a few - but not for a long time
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:22pm Uncle Michael:

how nuts is this synthy bass from '69?
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:22pm pacific standard simon:

I like this Trini cut, but I want to feed his bass player a fistful of valium.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 2:23pm glenn:

man, just when you thought gerry and the pacemakers were bad.....
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:23pm ndbob:

never heard this version before - or anything from this Trini LP
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:23pm ndbob:

The early Trini records - on King - are pretty good
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:24pm Rich in Washington:

I don't like reading author bios too much. It often influences my reading of their literary output too much. I remember reading Kafka's bio (I don't remember which one) and it gave me an entirely different viewpoint of his work, which I wasn't ready for at the time.
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:24pm pacific standard simon:

I wrote that comment before yours appeared, UM.
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:26pm Uncle Michael:

It's the only reason I played it!
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:28pm pacific standard simon:

I know what you mean, Rich. Writers tend to have not very happy lives, plus they know other writers who remember too much about them. Kafka kept diaries, too. Fiction is always less messy.
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:30pm ndbob:

Yep - though I'm tempted to read the recent Mailer biography
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:32pm listener james from westwood:

i enjoyed it. i've never understood the occasional tom jones dislike i've encountered. my mother hated him for some reason.
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:32pm pacific standard simon:

Now THAT would be messy (and interesting). Mailer appears as a dinner host, once, in the Brautigan book.
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:34pm listener james from westwood:

it is brautigan i'm thinking of who borrowed and never returned hundreds of library books?
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:36pm listener james from westwood:

that should be "is it brautigan." whoops!
Avatar    Fri. 1/3/14 2:36pm pacific standard simon:

@james - nothing about that in the bio, and seems doubtful, since several people noted how few books he kept around.

Library shut down yesterday with weather anxiety. My books were due yesterday. Will they fine me the big fitty cents today?

@glenn - sounds like a good idea. I got a practical, Mr. Rogers-style cardigan, though.
@still b/p - most libraries let you renew online, which will stop the fines.

for some reason i recall it being him, or someone with a similarly truncated life. this is gonna kill me....

I noticed, when I was in Jamestown, that the library website stated that after a book was 45 days overdue the police would be notified

Gives a new meaning to "book 'em"

@james - here's a good one (not dead, though): en.wikipedia.org...

I would imagine the liberry will waive the snow day fines...

Throw another book on the fire.

I don't want the show to be over. Don't. Don't. Don't.
Avatar Fri. 1/3/14 2:49pm still b/p:

I renewed these books twice already -- that's the limit. Just browsy books anyway, so it's fine to give 'em up. And I don't begrudge the library their four bits, though I, too, expect they'll waive it. Free borrowing and two renewals...fitty cent cheap.

Doug, if you're still there, how many eggs could I have boiled in that water during the show?
