Nice way to kick it off, with sandy Denny ... just before Thanksgiving. |

Dave Mandl:
Hey deadland. Thanks. Yeah, very autumnal, that record. As usual, the "Late November" was a pure coincidence. Funny how these things happen. |
![]() |
![]() Hey Man, thanks, I hadn't thought of Bailiff in a bit. There are no coincidences round here. Yes, a Gabriel reference, not a request. |

OMG, Dave. Look how you spelled my name. Much as I like your show, I will never again say, "you killed me" as per the above. |

Hey BDR. I guess not. There are forces moving my fingers toward the CD decks, but I can't begin to guess what's behind them. |

Studio jazz recordings often seem to be missing applause at the end of each solo. It can make a great performance sound like it happened during rehearsal. |
Sun. 11/24/13 9:15pm
LovecraftDude888:
and now it's cold as heck out there. oh the humanitee! I had to spring for some new Isotoners today.

Sun. 11/24/13 9:26pm
Droll:
Deadland would be an awesome theme park to run: very low overhead because all you need is a parking lot to charge for and everyone would bring their own party. Stinky hippies don't need or use hygienic facilities. |
Sun. 11/24/13 9:26pm
The Frisco Kid:
!To rub it in, but It's about 55F here.
Sun. 11/24/13 9:27pm

You can stay at the adjacent Mars Hotel bla bla bla replica I'd like to see like, a Captain Beefheart Park! now THAT would be worth admission. The My Human Gets Me Blues ride.

LovecraftDude888:
So what up with new Rough Trade shop in Bklyn? Is it gonna be good or what? saying N. 9th St. for that. I hope it's good.
![]() Dave, by taking the first letter of every other word in your last announcement I now have the location of Jimmy Hoffa's body. Maybe the next one should be a little harder.
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 9:34pm
Droll:
My favorite tune on this album is Every Kinda People, this is s a very solid album. Good Kinks cover, too. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 9:35pm
deanland:
@12539 The 3d letter of the second word of every other show leads you to Judge Crater. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 9:36pm
deanland:
The tough part is how it takes weeks to get it, and then to know when Dave has cryptically switched to Amelia Earhart. |
![]() |
![]() In retrospect, it's hard for me to find Robert Palmer any more irritating than The Police, although it seemed different at the time. |
Sun. 11/24/13 9:37pm
LovecraftDude888:
I love Robert Palmer, he was one of my heroes for sure. When I met Jody Stephens back in July, I wore my best RP outfit: black slacks, white dress shirt, dark tie, and dress shoes etc. I doubt Jody cared...but I did it for a larf. The girls came and tore my outfit off. not.
![]() deanland: Don't forget you have to ignore the "e"s. It's always "without an e" on this show.
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 9:38pm
Dave Mandl:
Welcome pss, 12539, Firsco, Jake. |
Sun. 11/24/13 9:38pm
LovecraftDude888:
I was always a Police fan, but god, Sting solo...not so much. I loved when Trouser Press called n. like the sun a vacuous cavern of a record.
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 9:39pm
Dave Mandl:
Jimmy Hoffa's probably buried in the neighborhood where I grew up. |
Sun. 11/24/13 9:39pm
LovecraftDude888:
that tape lit. put me to sleep when I first got it. so dull it was scary.

@12539: I know, which gives me such an identity crisis. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 9:39pm
Dave Mandl:
Frisco, not Firsco. Sorry, trying to chew gum, type, and do a radio show. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 9:41pm
deanland:
Note that Firsco came second in that string. |
![]() |
![]() Spelling bad. Alphabetical order, good. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 9:42pm
Droll:
Sting's fretless playing is torture -- when not intentionally out of pitch it's unintentionally out out pitch. It's just wrong. Thankfully the producers typically dubbed in a synthesizer. |
![]() |
![]() Sacha swings. |
![]() |
![]() I actually liked “Dream of the Blue Turtles.” But past that, all the irritating stuff of that solo endeavor became his core. And I have 100% no clue. |
![]() |
![]() Also, The “Dream of the Blue Turtles” tour was my first concert. Radio City. Had a t-shirt that official disintegrated 10 years ago. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 9:44pm
Dave Mandl:
@Droll: He shouldn't be allowed to play a fretless. Colin Moulding (XTC), on the other hand, should. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 9:46pm
Droll:
Even I owned (CS) Dream of Blue Turds: Omar Hakim, Darryl Jones, Kenny Kirkland, Branford Marsalis. |
![]() |
![]() Percy Jones for fretless president. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 9:49pm
deanland:
What?! You mean "Dram of The Blue Turtles" wasn't Sting's passive aggressive plan to get Flo & Eddie to join up with BB King? |
![]() |
![]() I was 16 years old when “Dream of the Blue Turtles” came out. Forgive my youth. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 9:51pm
deanland:
Dream, not Dram. Although "Dram of The Blue Turtles" has a certain pharmaceutical ring to it. |
Sun. 11/24/13 9:52pm
ttrish:
Cold? From the very north : http://www.yr.no/place/Canada/Nunavut/Iqaluit/hour_by_hour.html Warmer air arrives in Jersey City from the south starting tomorrow, it looks like: http://www.yr.no/place/United_States/New_Jersey/Jersey_City/hour_by_hour.html
![]() |
![]() Drum of The Blue Turtles sounds like a rhythm band from The Bahamas. |
![]() |
![]() “Dub of the Blue Turtles” is the reggae tribute to Sting that might actually exist but I will not even attempt to Google it. |
![]() |
![]() Jah, mon, I play de tenor turtle! |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 10:01pm
Droll:
Looks like this show's gonna be long -- 1st ID down and still now Final Stretch in sight. Fretless: Jaco. Mick Karn close second. The instrument has many great players, Sting is the poster child for "That's enough." My coincidence here is I listened to Don Juan's Reckless Daughter two days ago because... well.. Jaco, Alias, and Metheny are a *backing* band... At the end I wondered "What is the mood of this album?" I'm still not sure. It has one, I just can't put it in words. |
![]() |
![]() Oops, forgot about Jaco. Well, Percy's still alive. |
Sun. 11/24/13 10:05pm
The Frisco Kid:
this track is Mandlrific.
Sun. 11/24/13 10:08pm
The Frisco Kid:
Tim Hecker.. quite nice. Reminds me a bit of William Fields. www.williamfields.com
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 10:11pm
Dave Mandl:
Percy Jones is one of my heroes. Jaco comes close. |
![]() |
![]() I used to own an Ampeg fretless. In my hands, it was wasted. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 10:15pm
Droll:
"Jaco comes close"? Them's fightin' words, Mandl. pss, If you are wasting any basses presently, I can help you dispose of that burden. |
![]() |
![]() Sorry, Droll, my 4-string fantasias are currently limited to the ukulele. |
![]() |
![]() I'm going to try that cut-out-of-record coaster thing, 'cause I need a replacement for my Graceland coasters. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 10:20pm
Droll:
I've never heard of a "Record Coaster" before, I had to Google it. Don't the paper labels get ruined instantly? That doesn't look like a good coaster design. |
![]() |
![]() Varathane! |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 10:22pm
Dave Mandl:
Droll: You mean he doesn't come close? Well, I've always been a much bigger fan of Percy, but Jaco was great, no doubt about that. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 10:22pm
Dave Mandl:
I actually took some lessons from Percy back in the '80s at some point. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 10:22pm
Dave Mandl:
Maybe I'll play some Brand X? |
![]() |
![]() Percy's website, w/YouTube embedded: www.percyjones.net |
![]() |
![]() Dave, how about something from the Peter & The Wolf album, sometime? |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 10:31pm
Dave Mandl:
@pss: Which one, the rock one from the mid-'70s? |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 10:32pm
Droll:
Sorry -- I was in the kitchen, you already know you compete with dinner time. Of course Percy is one of the great players I was talking about, I'm actually generous with respect for bassists. I even like my own fretless playing. (Droll) Humor doesn't always carry through the internetz. You may most certainly play Brand X, you're well below you usual prog/fusion balance so far. |
![]() |
![]() Yeah, with Eno as the wolf. NOT the Bowie one. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 10:35pm
Dave Mandl:
I'd completely forgotten about that record. Not sure if FMU has a copy. I definitely don't. |
![]() |
![]() We haven't discussed the return of the drummer special, lately, and this makes me wonder... why not do a bassist special edition of World of Echo? |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 10:37pm
Dave Mandl:
Funny, but the subject of a second drum special came up just yesterday, because I saw Irwin. A bass special might be testing people's tolerance, though of course I'd love to do one. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 10:38pm
Dave Mandl:
I'd focus on things like Jack Casady's opening bass note on the first Jefferson Airplane record. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 10:41pm
Droll:
I'm so glad the station's undisputed thunder-tubs master, Bryce, will be on the next drum special, and it's so soon! |
Sun. 11/24/13 10:41pm
ttrish:
Drum special2. Yeah! Maybe you could make the bounds a bit porous and allow for a bit of bass?
![]() |
![]() Don't be too cautious; there's a lot of us former bass players out there. Casady is a big yes. We discussed Charlie Haden, I believe. Plenty more favorites. |
![]() |
![]() Hello hello hello! |
![]() Getting all fancy with the animated gifs, I see.
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 10:48pm
Dave Mandl:
Hey there, ttrish and Ike. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 10:51pm
Droll:
12539, Some people wear their bling all the time, I'm not totally into it, but they might be fun sometimes. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 10:54pm
Dave Mandl:
ttrish: I'm not sure about that. If we let bassists in everyone will want to get in. |
![]() |
![]() Dave, glad to hear the record fair went well. I went on my 30th bday, a long time ago. Bought my Chris Ware 'FMU t-shirt there. This is some nice right here... |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 10:57pm
Droll:
Mandl, You already posed as a drummer because you're just a bassist. Things go downhill quickly... Rockin' Roy into Parmegiani was a gearshift. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 10:59pm
Dave Mandl:
Blame my parents for not allowing me to get a drumset. That's why I became a bassist. Come to think of it, they wouldn't allow me to get a bass either, but I bought one anyway. |
Sun. 11/24/13 11:00pm
fascinoma:
wonderful show tonight, Dave. thanks for the Parmegiani.
![]() |
![]() Also, there's nothing at all that I like about Queen, aside from bassist John Deacon, whom I adore. Also Martin Gordon, of Sparks (Island Records version). EFD will know. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 11:05pm
deanland:
My 1966 Ludwig Pearl/Zildjian Cymbals/Gretsch accessories drum set came a a result of a desperate bribe from my parents. Best deal I may ever have made with them, come to think of it. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 11:05pm
deanland:
Typo: came as a result (not a a result) |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 11:08pm
Dave Mandl:
Hi osvi. And thanks, fascinoma. |
![]() |
![]() This sounds a little like Ken Nordine. |
![]() |
![]() Regarding Jack Casady, I'd go for that first note at the beginning of "House At Poohneil Corners", the Yggdrasil bass, as it was said. My other idol on bass was Paul Gray, of Eddie & The Hot Rods. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 11:16pm
Droll:
Cerrone is a drummer and he's still alive. He did disco mega-jams! |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 11:20pm
Droll:
. o O ( Humor is completely filtered out by the comments board, or I'm not funny, or DM has no sense of humor, or some combination ) |
![]() |
![]() You gotta LOL it like you talk it, lest you lose that beat. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 11:22pm
Dave Mandl:
I have no sense of humor. Also, I could only see the first couple of words of your comment when I was on mic, including the crucial bit about the disco jams. Oh well. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 11:23pm
Dave Mandl:
There are a few Cerrones, though the disco Cerrone was the king. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 11:23pm
Droll:
Recently Kenzo said he couldn't figure out if I was making a joke or "standing on [my] head". 30-40 seconds of delay also throws off timing. |
![]() I'll never trust anything out of Mandl's mouth ever again.
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 11:24pm
Dave Mandl:
@pss: Seriously, listen to when Casady comes in at the beginning of "Blues from an Airplane." Four little notes, but you can tell it's a master at work. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 11:25pm
Dave Mandl:
Casady's playing on "After Bathing at Baxter's" generally is the best. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 11:27pm
Droll:
All talk and no special, that's what they say... |
![]() |
![]() I will, I will. I'm also quite fond of that first Hot Tuna record. Also nuts about Spencer Dryden's drum intro to "She Has Funny Cars". |
![]() |
![]() Drummers are iconic, bassists are ironic. |
Sun. 11/24/13 11:31pm
ttrish:
..Drums. Yes. So many frequencies in the spectrum. So few that are syncopated.
![]() |
![]() Although The Airplane may reverse that pattern. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 11:33pm
Droll:
Okay -- Let's say we compromise with a rhythm section show: Burford-Wetton, Ward-Butler, Rogers-Edwards, etc. |
![]() |
![]() McCartney-Starr |
![]() |
![]() Haden-Higgins |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 11:35pm
Droll:
Thopmson-Edwards, I meant. pss, I think you mean McCartney-McCartney. |
![]() |
![]() I think not. |
![]() |
![]() All-cello show would be pushing it. |
![]() |
![]() Is the drummer a part of the quartet? |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 11:43pm
Dave Mandl:
The Balanescus? No, isn't. |
![]() |
![]() This is nice. Thanks, Dave. |
![]() |
![]() That's what I was wondering. Sometimes I have trouble waiting for the back-announce. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 11:52pm
Dave Mandl:
That should have been "No, *he* isn't" (part of the quartet). |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 11:52pm
Dave Mandl:
Jake: Yeah, I agree. |
![]() |
![]() If I wanted to follow anyone on Twitter, which I would right before I slashed my wrists, I would follow you. Plus, I already follow you on Tumbler. |
![]() Funny "coincidence" about those pieces with "II/2" in the name. Now I can set my decoder ring for next week's show.
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 11:56pm
Dave Mandl:
@pss: Don't do it. (I mean slash your wrists! You definitely should follow me.) |
![]() |
![]() Don't worry, ain't gonna (slash, twitter, facebook). |
![]() |
![]() Hearing Biosphere is always good. I believe Biosphere features someone who used to be in Bel Canto, a favorite from the 90s. |
![]() |
![]() You follow him on the Tumbler? What about Tumblr. I think now that Yahoo! took over the spambot filters on Tumblr are busted. |
![]() |
Sun. 11/24/13 11:59pm
Droll:
12539, Don't forget "Double Fun" and "Eight Electronic Pieces" or you'll never find the right Numbers Station. DM, Sorry your Mellotron is broken and you had you use so many real strings this week. Until the next Final Stretch... Pot your bed down! |
![]() Thanks, Dave. | |
![]() |
![]() I know, Jake. It's a legacy social media thing for me. I have some history with it. |
![]() |
