Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:05pm Uncle Michael:

Hey Simon...you'll appreciate what's coming.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:10pm pacific standard simon:

I do. Recently read Stephen King's 11/22/63, too, which is another good take on Oswald.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:11pm still b/p:

Does anyone/everyone else still get the cutting-in-and-thing at everey Drummer stream handoff? Depending on what's playing and how loudly and how far away from the computer I am, the player re-start can get pretty damn urgent.
I tell ya, though, the intermittent Hinky Dinky shopper theme is a good element in an audio mix for a scene with someone going mad....MAD!
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:12pm Danne D:

Whoa Charles Guiteau shout out
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:13pm Lizardner Dave:

I get the cutting in and out thing at every handoff on any stream other than the main one. Just restarting the player works.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:13pm Doug Schulkind:

@still b/p
The pop-up player still hiccups between shows. A quick re-start fixes it. Hopefully that won't be necessary much longer.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:14pm Danne D:

I think there's a conspiracy against clear handoffs
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:14pm efd:

I'm no theater buff, let alone musical theater, but I nearly fell off my show when I looked this absurdity up and discovered it was written by Stephen Sondheim!
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:15pm Jeff Golick:

any vaughn meader today?
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:16pm Alex In Illinois:

I always get the cutting-in-and-out thing when stream handoff occurs, and it gets fixed by clicking the pasue button, and clicking the playbutton again. so now I do that by habit. AS soon as Doug signs off, and I hear the first stopage, I click pause and then paly.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:16pm Danne D:

No kidding, EFD?
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:17pm efd:

(sub "chair" for "show")
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:17pm pacific standard simon:

This show didn't make it in New York, but it's quite popular with college theater groups. If you want to see it, that's where to look.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:17pm Uncle Michael:

Yes, Jeff.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:17pm Danne D:

So, um, how many people went out and assassinate people right after listening to this?!?

Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:19pm still b/p:

Vaughn Meader, I just learned in my newspaper right here a moment ago, collected blue rabbits "after an acid trip where he saw himself as a blue rabbit."

@ngh - this musical also features a rendition of the snappy little number that Guiteau wrote, and sung himself on the gallows.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:23pm Brian in UK:

Is there a later volume 'Read Along with George W Bush'?

Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:34pm Danne D:

@Still b/p - oh I can rhyme Chappaquiddick - just not sure I could do it in and FCC friendly way
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:37pm still b/p:

Pondering relevant possibilities...Is the correct pronunciation Glenfidditch or Glenfiddick?
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:39pm βrian:

"The heathen gods of old Japan." Heh.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:43pm Brian in UK:

Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:49pm pacific standard simon:

I seem to remember being told, as a child, that there were secret assassination files that would not be released for 75 years. Hoping I can hold out for another 25 years.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:50pm Danne D:

Phil Ochs *sigh*
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:53pm Lizardner Dave:

Completely surprising that Phil Ochs hung himself. Yep.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:54pm Doug Schulkind:

Phil's sister, Sonny, usta be on WFMU.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:57pm Brian in UK:

Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 12:57pm Brian in UK:

...and angry.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:02pm Mike East:

I used to hate this Postal Service song because when it first came out, the girl at the bar I worked at would play it nonstop. A few years off from it and I've regained appreciation for it.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:03pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:04pm Uncle Michael:

Glad to have all of you with me today.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:08pm Alex In Illinois:

There are lots of songs I would have like better if someone had not overplayed it. I wonder if I have ruined songs for others by overplaying them. Hmmm.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:10pm Danne D:

My first college roommate played only (and I mean only) Public Enemy's Nations of Millions for a whole semester. Took a few years to appreciate it more (it's fun to spring large chunks of it on unsuspecting people too) :)
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:11pm pacific standard simon:

I'd be a lot more with you today if I weren't running around trying to stay warm. Low 20s in Western Washington. The frost is on the pumpkin, as they say (or on the dog's tennis ball, anyway).
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:13pm Danne D:

Bob Goulet did a great series of ESPN commercials a few years ago - one of which used this song as the basis :)
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:14pm Danne D:

Wow, this was from 1968? That's odd.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:14pm Uncle Michael:

Glad to have you checking in, Simon.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:14pm pacific standard simon:

And speaking of Frost: "Nothing gold can stay" -- I gotta go to work in a half hour.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:14pm Alex In Illinois:

I have no actual recollection of what I was doing on this day in 1963, but I am quite certain that I was gestating.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:15pm Uncle Michael:

gestating or gestalting?
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:15pm ken in denver:

Everyone knows that crack's wack
So we're voting for jack.

I was pissed off that Astroboy cartoons were preempted for news coverage.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:17pm Lizardner Dave:

Anything for the 45th anniversary of the release of the White Album?
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:18pm Uncle Michael:

Erm...right after the show!
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:19pm pacific standard simon:

The story of how Sinatra fell out with the Kennedys, as told by Sinatra's personal assistant, is a pretty good one.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:20pm Uncle Michael:

I'm taking a sledge hammer to my chopper pad right after the show.

Tommy Boy is a Monica connection?
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:41pm Doug Schulkind:

I blogged about that "Mr. K. and Mr. D" song (blog.wfmu.org...) and a commenter suggested that "Mr. K." could actually be Khrushchev. Certainly possible, but there was a bevy of countryish religious tunes recorded during the '60s the criticized the U.S. space program as "unChristian" and against the Bible. I took the song in that light as an attack on (the Catholic) Kennedy's race to the moon.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:43pm Uncle Michael:

The comment is wrong. The references about the space program make that clear.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:48pm ken in denver:

@Brian in UK: Is there nothing Monica can't do? www.complex.com...
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:49pm Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Yes, absolutely! In fact, when I was working for Steinski, Monica used to come over to his studio and hang. Steinski was still producing his Rough Mix show for WFMU at the time. Steinski and I encouraged Monica to come down to the station and get involved—and boy has she.
Avatar Fri. 11/22/13 1:53pm pacific standard simon:
