...that 9-figure lottery I dream of - would send my learning-curve to 90°s - it's like he won that 144 times...
Avatar 10:40pm
Droll:

In a typical technology cycle/history repeating itself fashion I downloaded a set of samples of the Mellotron tapes and loaded them into a software sampler. It sounds very authentic: many of the notes are noticeably out of tune and pretty much all the notes end with terrifying pitch and volume warbles. Good stuff!

With all due respect, DM, P-Mac is pretty much the embodiment of my ideal musician: Plays every instrument, every note on the album, and still puts the emphasis on songs, not playing. When I hear P-Mac or Adrian Belew or Prince or Stevie Wonder or Rundgren or any of the cats who play all the instruments, those albums always sound "different". (read: better)
Avatar 10:42pm
David L.B. is RRN63:

- oh, Mandl's well aware of SirMacca's genius, of course. Even if he only did play bass.
Avatar 10:44pm
Droll:

Nonono!!! He played bass AND drums AND guitar AND keyboards AND sang AND wrote the song! P-Mac is not a "bassist", he is a "musician".
Avatar 10:45pm
David L.B. is RRN63:

- I said 'even if' - of course that's *unimaginably* reductive.
Avatar 10:47pm
David L.B. is RRN63:

- as in - a genius on bass *alone*...
Avatar 10:51pm
Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Yes, I know about all the other instruments. I happen to think he's a Genius musician. I was joking.

My perspective is closer to Andy Shernoff's: "June 1st, '67, something died and went to heaven -- I wish Sgt. Pepper NEVER taught the band to play!"

Charlie Haden is one of those musicians who make me wish for a $10000 stereo.
Avatar 11:01pm

I love Pepper - can't call something 'overproduced' that I can listen to gazillions over decades
- but I think Revolver is better. & the White Album underrated - esp. after 2009 Remasters !
...I like Macca's story that they saw Elvis sent his gold car out on tour instead of touring himself - & Pepper was their attempt @ such a thing! Puts it in perspective ??...

UM, I recently exposed myself to two archives of Hinky Dinky Time, I hope you weren't offended. Good show, but not enough prog!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Uncle Michael:

@Simon: Ah, I see.

@Droll: Is there ever enough prog? I mean...anywhere? I'll be upping the prog quotient slightly when I fill in on Tuesday evening for Jesse Kaminsky. I'm glad you found the non-prog non-sucky. Now, please close your raincoat.
Avatar 11:23pm
Droll:

No wonder it was so chilly and drafty in here! Thanks for the tip (no pun intended)!
And there most certainly is a standard for "too much prog": cruisetotheedge.com You will not find my prog rock loving self on any cruise ship with 5,000 proggers playing "Pull My Finger" or "Which Yes lineup is best?" for 7 straight days and nights. Full stop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
pacific standard simon:

@UM - The guy who is filling in for you on Friday has been known to play some prog. And, alas, my work schedule has arrived, and I will have to miss the live broadcast of your Tuesday fill in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
Uncle Michael:

Yeah...that's a level of hell.

Remember, I said "slightly."
Avatar 11:25pm
David L.B. is RRN63:

...Wh♂SellOut was *their* equivalent of Pepper - but also eulogizing PirateRadio & what was passing; Townshend coined term 'PowerPop' around then to distinguish themselves...but then he coughed up 'Tommy' from the Collective Unconscious...
- For a long time, the talk was Pepper was great, but what it spawned horrible (like blaming Miles Davis for the worst of the Fusion: true - & not true) - but it has company like PinkFloyd's 1st, Zombie's 'Odessey' - & many would rate Love's 'Forever Changes' as actually better-balanced than Pepper...if coming *after* it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27pm
Uncle Michael:

Let's toss Chad and Jeremy's "The Ark" in there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
