Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 9:18pm glenn:

Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 9:21pm glenn:

Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 9:21pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- the U.S. has them too, glenn...
  Sun. 11/10/13 9:28pm Marmalade Kitty:

Good to see a mayor with humanity! :D
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 9:33pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- hmm - like Ween & Tindersticks had a child - & it ended up surprisingly well-adjusted !
...I *do* say the strangest things...
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 9:36pm pacific standard simon:

First time I ever heard of someone gettin' that huge while doing crack.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 9:37pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...looks like they may pre-date them both, though!...
- I just want to see that Mayor in the same room w/ Christie...
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 9:39pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...complex but catchy/accessible - that's impressive...
  Sun. 11/10/13 9:46pm sweet cheri:

hey greetings dave, what's your pleasure?
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 9:50pm Dave Mandl:

Hey Cheri and everyone. Busy with my guests here, but I'll join you in a bit.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 9:54pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...or, put it another way (?) - the songwriting & the somewhat unusual architecture/arranging are blended in a surprising but semaless way...Well - I like it whether I make sense or not! : ) ...
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 9:56pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- various comparisons have drifted past my mind - Beefheart, Devo, Talking Heads, XTC, Flesheaters
...you know what they say about comparisons!...
  Sun. 11/10/13 9:57pm 12539:

Thanks, guests!
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 9:58pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- yeah Thx !
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 10:01pm pacific standard simon:

"...you know what they say about comparisons!..."

Everybody has one?
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 10:02pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...something like that...
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 10:21pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...I'm under-informed, but eventually stopped while I was behind
...*I* want the Mellotron w/ SirMacca's voice !...
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 10:25pm Dave Mandl:

@DLBRRN63: Make him an offer!
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 10:26pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- tried, but it's like money means nothing to that guy!!
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 10:33pm Dave Mandl:

Don't believe the hype. How much money can he have? He's just a bass player.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 10:39pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- read that Bill Gates has $72billion
...that 9-figure lottery I dream of - would send my learning-curve to 90°s - it's like he won that 144 times...
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 10:40pm Droll:

In a typical technology cycle/history repeating itself fashion I downloaded a set of samples of the Mellotron tapes and loaded them into a software sampler. It sounds very authentic: many of the notes are noticeably out of tune and pretty much all the notes end with terrifying pitch and volume warbles. Good stuff!

With all due respect, DM, P-Mac is pretty much the embodiment of my ideal musician: Plays every instrument, every note on the album, and still puts the emphasis on songs, not playing. When I hear P-Mac or Adrian Belew or Prince or Stevie Wonder or Rundgren or any of the cats who play all the instruments, those albums always sound "different". (read: better)
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 10:42pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- oh, Mandl's well aware of SirMacca's genius, of course. Even if he only did play bass.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 10:44pm Droll:

Nonono!!! He played bass AND drums AND guitar AND keyboards AND sang AND wrote the song! P-Mac is not a "bassist", he is a "musician".
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 10:45pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- I said 'even if' - of course that's *unimaginably* reductive.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 10:47pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- as in - a genius on bass *alone*...
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 10:51pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Yes, I know about all the other instruments. I happen to think he's a Genius musician. I was joking.
  Sun. 11/10/13 10:52pm sweet cheri:

fantastic show tonight dave, nothing beats a great combo than monica & dave mandl!!
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 10:53pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: I'm a bass player, though, so I'm biased.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 10:54pm Dave Mandl:

Merci, S.C.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 10:55pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...or just his singing - or just his songwriting - wunna TheeGreats in all areas
...& then there's even intangibles - like Concepts ('Sgt. Pepper' for example) - & Cultural Significance (Dylan said we should put up statues of TheBeatles)...
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 10:57pm Droll:

Indeed, Sgt. Pepper is the blueprint for prog rock!
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 10:58pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...I mean - he's the Mozart - thee Melodic Genius of Rock.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 10:58pm pacific standard simon:

My perspective is closer to Andy Shernoff's: "June 1st, '67, something died and went to heaven -- I wish Sgt. Pepper NEVER taught the band to play!"
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:01pm pacific standard simon:

Charlie Haden is one of those musicians who make me wish for a $10000 stereo.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:01pm David L.B. is RRN63:

I love Pepper - can't call something 'overproduced' that I can listen to gazillions over decades
- but I think Revolver is better. & the White Album underrated - esp. after 2009 Remasters !
...I like Macca's story that they saw Elvis sent his gold car out on tour instead of touring himself - & Pepper was their attempt @ such a thing! Puts it in perspective ??...
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:02pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- & RubberSoul the Maturity of PopWriting.
- Charlie is King, man.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:03pm Uncle Michael:

Charlie Haden and my dad...same H.S. band teacher. True.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:04pm pacific standard simon:

Your parents are the reason I'm jealous of you, Michael.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:05pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...anyhow - just one band, four guys - just 13 short albums over about seven years.
- Charlie had roots in childhood Midwest Country Family Radio - & yet was Ornette's bassist in Free Pioneering...& very forthright Politically - what a guy!!
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:06pm David L.B. is RRN63:

- always interesting to me that FreeJazz players often had roots in RootsMusic...
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:09pm Uncle Michael:

Charlie was a kid on the radio well before he went to Central High School in Omaha, yep.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:10pm Uncle Michael:

My parents, Simon?
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:11pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...Charlie Haden's one of those people I would rather hear *talk* about Music - then hear a lot of other people *play* music...
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:14pm pacific standard simon:

It would be impossible for me to speak with love or respect about my parents. You often do, or so it seems to me.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:14pm Droll:

UM, I recently exposed myself to two archives of Hinky Dinky Time, I hope you weren't offended. Good show, but not enough prog!
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:18pm Uncle Michael:

@Simon: Ah, I see.

@Droll: Is there ever enough prog? I mean...anywhere? I'll be upping the prog quotient slightly when I fill in on Tuesday evening for Jesse Kaminsky. I'm glad you found the non-prog non-sucky. Now, please close your raincoat.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:23pm Droll:

No wonder it was so chilly and drafty in here! Thanks for the tip (no pun intended)!
And there most certainly is a standard for "too much prog": cruisetotheedge.com You will not find my prog rock loving self on any cruise ship with 5,000 proggers playing "Pull My Finger" or "Which Yes lineup is best?" for 7 straight days and nights. Full stop.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:24pm pacific standard simon:

@UM - The guy who is filling in for you on Friday has been known to play some prog. And, alas, my work schedule has arrived, and I will have to miss the live broadcast of your Tuesday fill in.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:24pm Uncle Michael:

Yeah...that's a level of hell.

Remember, I said "slightly."
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:25pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...Wh♂SellOut was *their* equivalent of Pepper - but also eulogizing PirateRadio & what was passing; Townshend coined term 'PowerPop' around then to distinguish themselves...but then he coughed up 'Tommy' from the Collective Unconscious...
- For a long time, the talk was Pepper was great, but what it spawned horrible (like blaming Miles Davis for the worst of the Fusion: true - & not true) - but it has company like PinkFloyd's 1st, Zombie's 'Odessey' - & many would rate Love's 'Forever Changes' as actually better-balanced than Pepper...if coming *after* it...
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:27pm Uncle Michael:

Let's toss Chad and Jeremy's "The Ark" in there.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:28pm Uncle Michael:

I'll have to listen to Joe's fill-in for me on the archive. If I could listen live, I'd do the show!
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:28pm Uncle Michael:

Dave, this is beautiful.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:28pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...I'll take an Era of experiments & mistakes - to an era of focus groups & market management & stifling boredom...
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:30pm Droll:

RRN, Why choose? I think it's safe to say we're living in the era of focus groups' mistakes.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:30pm pacific standard simon:

The comment, about being for Wm. Turner, DOES seem appropriate. Could be for Whistler, too.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:31pm Dave Mandl:

@UM: Thanks.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:33pm pacific standard simon:

That could be on the station front page -- "WFMU: A focus group mistake!"
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:35pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...mistakes by Creative people, Droll
...somebody's profile here quotes John Cleese: 'We don't know where creativity comes from - but we know it's not our laptops.'
pss: Homepage caption: 'Our focus groups forgot what they were focusing on'...
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:35pm Dave Mandl:

But Focus is one of my favorite groups.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:36pm David L.B. is RRN63:

YodelOdelOdelOdelOhOhOh !!
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:38pm Uncle Michael:

Someone has to wrest Hocus Pocus from amEdeo's grip.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:40pm David L.B. is RRN63:

UM's right btw. SweetCheri too. Great show, Msr. Mandl.
...I wanna hear a different Focus track!; that ability & energy *had* to have done other things...
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:41pm Uncle Michael:

I see what you did there, Dave.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:42pm pacific standard simon:

Someone needs to play "Hocus Pocus" on bagpipes.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:42pm Uncle Michael:

I don't wanna hear a different one. I wanna play that one too.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:43pm Dave Mandl:

UM: Haha.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:43pm Dave Mandl:

"Focus 3" is a great record, one of my favorites. I play it from time to time.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:43pm pacific standard simon:

Rhythm section: banjo and accordion.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:43pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...I wanna hear 'HocusPocus' backwards...Ken might do it...
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:46pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...or MaryWing...
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:46pm Uncle Michael:

I'm going to listen to the remainder away from the keyboard. Thanks for the excellent show, Dave. See ya'll down the pike.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:47pm pacific standard simon:

As Vlad the Impaler might have said.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:48pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...Halloween's over pss...Hahaha!...
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:48pm Dave Mandl:

Night, Uncle.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:50pm David L.B. is RRN63:

...& PetSounds was behind Pepper - but it took most of us 30 years to find out...
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:51pm Droll:

Low participation on my part does not indicate a lack of interest. I'm focusing on something, but I just lost focus. What's wrong with Focus? No shame in a yodel according to focus groups.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:51pm pacific standard simon:

Uncle Michael has a timer app on his iPhone.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:54pm pacific standard simon:

My prog litmus test is: if you're willing to consider playing Gong in any of its incarnations, you're cool.
  Sun. 11/10/13 11:55pm 12539:

Isn't that title "bugs" rather than "blues?"
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:57pm Droll:

I sometimes gauge time by station IDs, which is confusing when listening to archives.
Speaking of the time, it looks like we're already entering next week's Final Stretch, so until then, have a fun week, yinz! Thx DM!
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:57pm Dave Mandl:

@12539: Yes, thanks. I'm falling asleep.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:57pm pacific standard simon:

I dunno, but that was good.
Avatar Sun. 11/10/13 11:57pm David L.B. is RRN63:

Brain Wilson saying he wanted to make Teenage Symphonies to God was the beginning of Prog - a surprisingly straight line from Phil Spector to King Crimson - w/ Brian Wilson's poor brain as the fulcrum point around which the World lost its' innocence...
  Sun. 11/10/13 11:58pm 12539:

Great show, Mr Mandl. Good luck catching your train.
Avatar Mon. 11/11/13 12:00am pacific standard simon:

Ain't buying it, Rabbit.

This is the end, my friend.
Avatar Mon. 11/11/13 12:01am Dave Mandl:
