The Wingdale Community Singers live on WFMU

Live performance by The Wingdale Community Singers

Led by the core of Hannah Marcus, David Grubbs and Rick Moody, The Wingdale Community Singers return for a third round with another album of nearly heartbreaking beauty. The Wingdales' seemingly simple songs have an underlying emotionalism that really tugs at the listener's soul. Walt Whitman becomes an unexpected lyricist as his poetry forms the basis of a three-song Whitman sampler at the center of the album, including the title song, "Night, Sleep, Death, and the Stars." The Wingdale Community Singers, joined by the newest member Tessa Jones, played live from WFMU's "Love" room.

Olivia Chaney live on WFMU

Live Performance by Olivia Chaney

Irene was also joined by British singer-songwriter Olivia Chaney, whose intensely personal music at times echoes Nick Drake and Sandy Denny. Chaney is equally at ease on the acoustic guitar, elegantly reworking music by folks like Bert Jansch all the way back to Henry Purcell, and can be equally moving on harmonium and piano. Olivia has performed with Alasdair Roberts, and was recently signed to Nonesuch Records. Olivia Chaney dropped by WFMU in advance of an evening show Monday November 4th at Rockwood Music Hall.

  Mon. 11/4/13 12:04pm Sporting a boner:

I like this music
  Mon. 11/4/13 12:04pm van:

Hi Irene and folks. I'll be missing large chunks of the show today. Thank goodness for the archives.
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:10pm kat330:

I made it this week. H'Irene, Sean and van!
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:11pm common:

good afternoon everybody!
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:11pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Greetings Kat and Van
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:12pm kat330:

Does appear a tangled bit of "brainy" vegetation apropos of the setting in the photo.
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:14pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Yes, isn't that wierd
  Mon. 11/4/13 12:14pm drewo:

Good morning from Tucson. We are now an hour closer - or is that further away? Love the morning melodies Irene. Maybe the Wingdale Singers hail from upstate Wingdale, NY.
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:16pm kat330:

Very UNtangled, simply sweet music though.
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:17pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Drew, how the devil are you, sir. What's the weather like with you just to hack us all off for us in colder climes!!
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:19pm Sean in Bristol UK:

And it pitch black now, depressing, thank goodness for Irene's show
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:20pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I used to pick blueberries at the farm at the top of the hill in Wingdale (along County Road 21). I think the owner died because it's not open to the public anymore. Also rode bikes up & over that hill a few times. It was quite a workout.
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:21pm Mike East:

ooh Amy Blashcke...that was very nice
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:22pm Mike East:

oops...I think I almost spelled that right.
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:23pm Mike East:

too many consonants in a row always confuses me.
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:23pm kat330:

Mike, wasn't around a couple of weeks ago, but belated happy First to sweet Lucie! :) Dag, should have made a little .mp3 like I did for her daddy...
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:24pm Mike East:

thanks kat330!
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:25pm Bryant:

I just assumed that Wingdale, NY, was the reference since Rick Moody is from Connecticut. By the way, if you ever find yourself in Wingdale, do yourself a favor and stop at Big Ws for barbecue. Truth.
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:25pm kat330:

Was it a fine fete for all?
  Mon. 11/4/13 12:29pm drewo:

Hi Sean! Lovely here in the desert. Warm days, cool nights. No reason not to be out on my bike right now. Except I'm listening to the radio.

@Ken From Hyde Park: now that you mention it, Wingdale might have been where we traveled as school kids from Po'keepsie to pick blueberries many decades ago. I also pedaled my bicycle over the hill out there - beautiful cycling country.
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:30pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Great set to start us off, Irene, love this and the track form Bill Callahan
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:34pm Mike East:

@kat330 - indeed...by the end of it, Lucie was was exhausted, and so were momma and poppa.
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:41pm kat330:

Ah, just checked you profile pics, Mike -- hope "toothbrush torture" wasn't on her big day?! ;)
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:49pm Mike East:

oh no! that's actually a spoon feeding her apples for the first time several months ago. In fact, we did start brushing her 8 teeth and she LOVES it. She cries when you put the toothbrush away.
  Mon. 11/4/13 12:50pm 12539:

Wingdale Singers sounding good!
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 12:58pm Mike East:

@kat330 - checkout the new one I just put on there...more recent/more hair.
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 1:07pm Irene Trudel:

Hi everybody! Sorry running a bit behind in postings. That photo has some bearing on my first guests. It's a picture of an insane asylum in the town of Wingdale, NY.
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 1:10pm doca:

the lyrics to this song remind me of the beginning of the first story on paul auster's new york trilogy.
Avatar Mon. 11/4/13 1:12pm Ken From Hyde Park:
