Curse you, Gottschalk! Dominique has been rattling around in my head aver since I heard it wafting out of Studio B earlier this afternoon.
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 3:08pm Webhamster Henry:

Dominique is somewhat more interesting at 33RPM. But it's worth it to get through it faster.
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 3:13pm fred:

Hello Kurt. I'm always surprised by how well Tom Johnson's music works despite the dry theory behind it
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 3:15pm northguineahills:

Man, everything I've heard from Tom Johnson jives w/ me.
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 3:15pm northguineahills:

*Shakes impotent fist at Fred*
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 3:16pm northguineahills:

I have this Crumb LP (got it for 50 cents at the Jacksonville library LP sale in 1998).
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 3:16pm fred:

what's the shaking about, ngh?
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 3:19pm BigLankyGeordie:

Ouch, those ladies are scaring the puppies!
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 3:23pm Kurt Gottschalk:

Hi everyone! Thanks for tuning in. Much in store today, including a Lou Reed tribute in the second hour and a bunch of Albert Ayler for All Saint's Day in the third. And tickets to giveaway in a few minutes. Thanks for tuning in!
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 3:23pm northguineahills:

Fred, you beat me to the punch (said exactly what I was going to say seconds before I hit 'send')
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 3:24pm northguineahills:

Feliz Dia del Muerte!
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 3:25pm the glowing one:

reminds me of Qntal
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 3:27pm northguineahills:

@Fred: Great minds thing alike is what I was inferring using an English language meme.
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 3:28pm fred:

I think I'll hit the archives for the Ayler part. And probably flee when the Lou Reed tribute starts.
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 3:34pm fred:

@ngh: I was afraid I had said something wrong for a moment...
I'm lucky enough to get exposure to Tom Johnson's music because he lives in Paris and has ties with my favorite venue. He also gives lectures at work once in a while, though I heard he dislikes the place. I've never been to one, weirdly enough
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 3:34pm the glowing one:

Oh, an album like Fantômas' Director's Cut, itneresting.
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 3:38pm northguineahills:

The meme references when someone says nearly word for word what you were going to say, but the other person said the same exact thing seconds in advance. So, jokingly, one would shake their fist like an old man yelling at the clouds, and would have no affect, hence lending said protest, impotent.

So, you said exactly what I was going to say, and I saw it right as I hit preview. Everything I've heard from Tom Johnson sounds amazing, even if the theory can be a wee bit obtuse.
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 3:38pm Droll:

Soy Dracula? Even The Count has gone vegan?
  Fri. 11/1/13 3:39pm Mark Helsten:

that's hot. (Ayler played by lucas on slide)
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 3:39pm Parq:

I like that much better than the score Philip Glass did for "Dracula", which plays under the Spanish version on the recently released DVD.
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 3:41pm fred:

@ngh: thanks, I didn't know about the fist shaking part of that
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 3:43pm northguineahills:

lultz, Droll!
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 3:45pm northguineahills:

This is the second time in weeks I've heard the Mill Pond on WFMU in as many weeks. I have the original on vinyl.
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 3:48pm fred:

The buzzing sound at the start of the Fahey song reminded me of the Ethiopian begena
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 3:49pm the glowing one:

Finally something that's easier to sing along to.
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 3:51pm fred:

Many of my coworkers openly laugh at me because I like Dolly Parton
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 3:52pm aaron in chicago:

your coworkers are objectively wrong
  Fri. 11/1/13 3:52pm cronon:

morrisey!
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 3:52pm Droll:

666 is coming to put it into us?!?! FCC - Save me!
  Fri. 11/1/13 3:54pm cronon:

ray torske, that is
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 3:59pm fred:

@aaron: I work in a research institute about contemporary music in France, so country is a joke to them. As it was to me before Laura Cantrell taught me better
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 4:02pm Carmichael:

Hiya Kurtski, hey everyone. Got here in time for the Reed tribute (Lou not Dean, right?).
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 4:04pm Seanbelly:

This is amazing
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 4:06pm northguineahills:

I was into IRCAM and other contemporary composition in my late teens. It took a few years into my 20s that I learned to love the soul of old Country music. (That was decade and a half ago.)
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 4:07pm Mary Wing:

Put the Microphone in mono, dude!
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 4:07pm The Count of Al Dente:

Sorry to interrupt but was I supposed to turn left at the second light?
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 4:11pm fred:

@ngh: Wow! There are not many teenagers who are into IRCAM, and I don't think it was all that different when you were one. Most people at shows there haven't been teenagers for half a century
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 4:12pm 37:

just got here..... waiting for some tuneage.... but this sounds pretty interesting too!!
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 4:13pm Mr. Mark.:

great interview!
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 4:14pm 37:

yeah...
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 4:23pm fred:

Colson Whitehead's Zone One was hyped as "a zombie novel with brains", which turned out to be pretty accurate, because it really is a zombie novel
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 4:26pm Caryn:

Um, didn't "Night of the Living Dead" hint that a weird meteor passing by was causing the zombies? Now, in "Dawn of the Dead" I agree that there is no cause.
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 4:27pm Mary Wing:

PAAAAAAAAAAAR-TAY!
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 4:29pm Kurt Gottschalk:

caryn - that is newscaster speculation in 'night' as i recall. george doesn't necessarily accept that as a part of the world myth he created.
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 4:31pm Caryn:

Well, true, Kurt. But what I'm getting is that there are at least possible causes suggested. By the time we get to "Dawn of the Dead", it's just all about survival, and the cause is not important.
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 4:31pm Mark Helsten:

Surfers?
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 4:31pm Mark Helsten:

never heard that one before... nice. and RIP
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 4:32pm Caryn:

BTW, damn the time shift! I missed the first hour of the show because I forgot the time difference had changed.
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 4:33pm Kurt Gottschalk:

caryn, re: dead, fair enough.
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 4:34pm Mary Wing:

Caryn, we're changing time on Saturday night, so get ready for shows starting an hour earlier. (and Hiya!!)
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 4:38pm fred:

@Mary: the shows will start later for us, or rather go back to the usual time: most of Europe has already switched out of DST
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 4:39pm Mike East:

has anyone played Ken Freedman's "Where's Lou Reed" bit from the Hoof n Mouth Sinfonia a few years ago? Love that piece.
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 4:40pm Carmichael:

Actually Mike, Ken played it on 7SD Wednesday.
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 4:41pm northguineahills:

@Fred: I think I got into the 50s-60s period of IRCAM. I purposely took music theory classes when I was in college just to be able to access the music college's graphic and aleatoric scores, as well as the the vinyl. (this was the mid 90s)
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 4:42pm Mike East:

for real Carmichael? How did I miss that? I thought they were just gabbing about Andy's twitter account the whole time.
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 4:42pm northguineahills:

Irwin played, "where's Lou Reed" on Wednesday, Mike. Or, maybe Carmichael's correct.
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 4:44pm Mike East:

jesus - I listened to that show, too. I gotta stop working while I doing important things like listening to the radio. Just getting way to distracted here.
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 4:45pm Kurt Gottschalk:

yes! no more working while listening to wfmu! we demand your full attention!
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 4:46pm northguineahills:

Actually, if memory serves, Irwin played it at the end of his set merging into 7sd.
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 4:47pm Mike East:

there's important stuff going on here.
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 4:49pm northguineahills:

Ok, I'm drain bamaged, it was Scott Williams that played, "Where is Lou", by Ken.
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 4:55pm Caryn:

@Mary: what fred said. I'm happily anticipating the time shift this weekend, because then my listening schedule can get back to normal.
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 4:58pm Mike East:

I think we're all a little brain bamaged here. :)
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 4:58pm Caryn:

And now I need to go to the archives of... well, one of the shows mentioned, to listen to the "Where is Lou" bit. Later, of course. I'm not going to miss the 3rd hour of Kurt!
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 5:01pm northguineahills:

It's the last 6 minutes of Scott's last Monday show, Caryn.
  Fri. 11/1/13 5:01pm Juan:

microphone check one two
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 5:02pm Mike East:

@ngh - now that makes sense - I left work early on Monday.
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 5:11pm Caryn:

Thanks for the info, ngh!
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 5:13pm Mark Helsten:

"IS THIS THING ON??"
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 5:14pm Carmichael:

Yes, ngh, it was Irwin who played it. Knew I heard it on Wednesday sometime ...
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 5:14pm Mark Helsten:

Beautiful choice of Ayler!!
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 5:16pm northguineahills:

^^^^!!!
  Fri. 11/1/13 5:26pm JohnEBGood:

Wow. This is nice. Thanks for your hard work, time and dedication including the play list. James Bond, " Live and Let Die!!"
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 5:30pm Kurt Gottschalk:

thanks for listening, johneb, and everyone out there in radioland.
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 5:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...One of these days

- you're gonna look for me
- & ah I'll be gone...
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 5:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...or even better :
...'you're gonna call my name'...
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 5:45pm northguineahills:

Ok, I'm leaving work. Thanks Kurt. Have a great weekend everyone!
  Fri. 11/1/13 5:45pm adam_nspy:

That Albert Ayler stuff really made me happy. I'm a happy boy.
Avatar Fri. 11/1/13 5:46pm Caryn:

Same to you, ngh!
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 5:48pm Mike East:

who said that Rabbit?
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 5:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I thot Ken played 'Where's Lou?' on his own show...as well...I guess...anyhow, he just keeps saying Lou will come on & he doesn't, right? - so - ??...
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 5:50pm Mike East:

yes, but its the WAAY he says it. He's so desperate.
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 5:51pm Mike East:

also, I think he was dressed like Cher at the time, possibly...though that wouldn't come through on the audio.
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 5:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Mike E :
www.youtube.com...

...or - saying 'Lou's here' has been a taunt for some people - like people teased Dylan when he was young saying WoodyGuthrie was outside when he (of course) wasn't...
Avatar    Fri. 11/1/13 5:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...an old 'Blues meme' the Velvets picked up on ...
