Options October 9, 2013: GAP DREAM and COSMONAUTS live sets! (Studio of Tomorrow Campaign, week 2)

Listen to this show: | Add or read comments

October is here, and as we've done the past couple of Octobers we here at WFMU are conducting a SILENT (shh!) fundraiser. I won't be talking about it during my show (well maybe one time, but only for a minute!), which means I'm depending on the written word to convince you to PLEASE PLEDGE!

You can find complete info about the Studio Of Tomorrow Campaign elsewhere on our website, but in brief we're asking for your help to build out a new 100-seat radio theater on the ground floor of WFMU's building in Jersey City. We need to get the space up to code and purchase basic equipment for the space so YOU THE LISTENER can join us for live sets by bands -- like the ones you'll hear tonight -- plus special live broadcasts, and other cool radio events.

This is the second of FIVE special shows this month to help get you excited about the Studio Of Tomorrow Campaign, to remind you of how awesome WFMU is, and hopefully to motivate you to pledge. Tonight I'm bringing you what I'm calling the Burger Records Sidecar Of Stars -- two of the bands currently out on the road as part of Burger's Caravan Of Stars. First up is The Cosmonauts, who proudly quote a critic's description of their sound as "the Beach Boys on downers;" their third album, Persona Non Grata (Burger), is out now. They'll be followed by Gap Dream, who bring their dreamy psych-garage sounds back to the WFMU studios ahead of the November release of their second album, Shine Your Light (Burger).

If you've already pledged, THANK YOU! Your support is greatly appreciated. If not,
P L E A S E   P L E D G E   N O W !
Don't make me turn on the <blink> tag.
Stay tuned for more exciting special shows all month, and please take a moment to Like The Evan "Funk" Davies Show on Facebook and follow me on Twitter! Thank you.!

The Cosmonauts lp from which these songs are coming (Persona non Grata) is really good, didn't mean to dis it/them while expressing my fervor for Gap Dream.

Set sounds wonderful!

And this

Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 9:53pm Brigitte:

I was in film class (Ross McClaren) with one of these guys in NYC. Heard about you guys through Mister Teacher but never listened till now. Your songs remind me of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's stuff -- really liking your feel. Keep it up.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 9:53pm Tome:

the Mix is just ,,, perfect indeed !! as well as the tunes ,,
  Wed. 10/9/13 9:53pm ?:

wow, this is fantastic!
  Wed. 10/9/13 9:53pm Sybil:

EFD, I am always falling asleep before I can praise your sets these days (oy! My schedule!) - so let this stand in for months and months of EFD lullabies, as it were.

I'll sleep easy, listening to you!

(Please dig down deep in your pockets, folks! I'm no way rich, but however I am rich is due to WFMU and in particular, to EFD. I pay back what I can. To have a performance space at WFMU, that would be awesome! Make it happen!)

Good night all of you! Missing in particular, Danne, Holly, there are people I've forgotten but forgive me! Cherie (of the various spellings) how did I forget? LOVE YOU
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 9:55pm Holly in NC:

@Sybil - are you still guardian of the important blinky things?
  Wed. 10/9/13 9:56pm Sybil:

@Holly - I absolutely am!
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 9:58pm Holly in NC:

@Sybil - Excellent!
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 9:58pm efd:

Thanks so much Sybil, that's very nice of you to say.

Tome and Mystery Commenter, I couldn't agree more!
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 9:58pm brigitte:

nevermind, i think i am totally wrong-o. wrong band...
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 9:59pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 9:59pm efd:

Hopefully you still like them though, Brigitte! :)
  Wed. 10/9/13 10:01pm mildred:

Sounds great!
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:01pm efd:

For those keeping score at home, I jumped the gun on the playlist -- this is "Sweet," the previous song was "Shaker."
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:04pm efd:

errr, "Sweet Talk" that is.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...'homemade [electric] 12-string' no less !...
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:06pm Cubicle Carl:

That live set was great. I felt that the music kept changing, in a good way. I went back to the playlist several times to check if it was still the cosmonauts.
  Wed. 10/9/13 10:07pm Arad Evans:

Brilliant. 12-string sounds mo cool.
  Wed. 10/9/13 10:10pm drewo:

Loving the set. Thanks Evan! The Burger Caravan is coming through my little town of Tucson next week! Just when I am going to NYC! Doh!!!
  Wed. 10/9/13 10:11pm Sybil:

Pledge as if your heart depended on it, and then pay up.

I have nothing more to say. I'mm falling asleep to the sweet sounds of WFMU. G'night, Dannne! G'night, Holly! G'night moon! G'night po-po! Wait, I'm doing this out of order...
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:11pm Danne D:

Hi EFD :) Hi Funk Fans :) Been doing the listening not commenting thing :)

Split Squad is awesome :) So glad I got to see them at Maxwell's
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:18pm Holly in NC:

Hi Danne!
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:24pm Holly in NC:

I had been getting a wee bit weary of King Khan but the new Merge lp is wonderful, total breath of fresh air.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:25pm Danne D:

Holly :)
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:28pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Rado good. Great even.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:35pm Alex of Chicago:

I don't even recall keyboards the one time I saw Gap Dream. Might have had one too many though.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:36pm efd:

Nope, you're right - this is Gap Dream mach two!
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:40pm efd:

That Vocoder show/station mention might just be the coolest thing ever.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:40pm Holly in NC:

This so different, and still so good! I am pretend dancing (cats on legs precluding actual dancing)
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:40pm Alex of Chicago:

Woah! Nice.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:43pm Stevel:

This mix is so clear, yet appropriately fuzzy. Mike Sin=God.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:44pm Alex of Chicago:

Reminds me of the button adorned jean vest with Abba t-shirt in the Chill Spot video. Like chocolate and peanut butter.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:45pm efd:

It doesn't hurt that these guys are one of the nicest bands ever.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:48pm Danne D:

EFD always does top notch stuff :)

Waiting for him to go over the top and do a live-band triple header one night
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:48pm Stevel:

Oooooooh, stereo keyboard effects!!!!
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:49pm fleep:

Final: St. Louis 6, Pittsburgh 1
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:50pm Holly in NC:

If I were closer to these guys' age I would be embarrassingly obsessed with them.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:50pm efd:

aw, too bad Buccos - but the foundation is there for similar seasons in the years ahead.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:51pm efd:

Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:53pm Holly in NC:

Whoa... this is a radical reinterpretation....
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:53pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Seriously great set.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:53pm Alex of Chicago:

Yeah, a lot different.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:53pm Stevel:

Love the live Chill Spot version. Holly just nailed it. Very active band, creatively.

These guys are something else.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:54pm Danne D:

:( It wasn't me EFD

Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:57pm Stevel:

I really, really want to see Gap Dream now. Seamless show.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:58pm steve:

i love when bands do new arrangements of old songs, like this
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:58pm Holly in NC:

Will this be added to the FMA?
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 10:59pm efd:

Holly, yes it will! I think I'm going to ask them to make it available as a single file in addition to individual songs.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 11:00pm Holly in NC:

Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 11:02pm efd:

and now here's the part where I gush embarrassingly about how great Burger Records is.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 11:02pm Alex of Chicago:

Burger just put your comment out on cassette.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 11:03pm efd:

LOL, Alex!
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 11:05pm Stevel:

FMA is good news, definitely with the single file option!
  Wed. 10/9/13 11:10pm 12539:

That was wonderful.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 11:12pm Danne D:

I wonder if the speaker volume reduction Evan bemoans is related to someone accidentally setting off the Social Media Airhorn
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 11:13pm efd:

the Social Media Airhorn bears no responsibility for the speaker problems.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 11:18pm Danne D:

I wonder if people violate the "what tickets do you have?" rule on the phone get a blast of the social media airhorn before they are hung up on.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 11:23pm Danne D:

(notice that I am not testing this theory)
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 11:23pm Danne D:

I'm packing up but will be listening in the car. Thanks for a great show as always EFD :) Have a great night everyone :)
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 11:29pm efd:

thanks Danne!
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 11:33pm efd:

Hey everyone, thanks for tuning in! I hope you dug the live sets from Gap Dream and the Cosmonauts as much as I did.
I just wanted to briefly remind you that our Studio Of Tomorrow silent fundraiser is now in progress. We're trying to raise the funds we need to finish building out a new 100-seat radio theater that will be open to the public so you can come down and see some live sets and other special broadcast events!
I really appreciate the pledges that have come in so far, but I'd love to see that progress bar jump up to 20% before the end of tonight's show. You can use this link to make a pledge now:

Thanks very much!
  Wed. 10/9/13 11:56pm 12539:

Above and beyond the call of duty, yet again. Thanks, Mr Funk.
Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 11:58pm nanantatee:

Avatar Wed. 10/9/13 11:59pm nanantatee:
