![]() Hey Man, thank goodness you're not up against the most anticipated two hours of television in the last twenty years. |

Hey bloopy, BDR. I can handle it. |

Sun. 9/29/13 9:11pm
Droll:
What's a "television"? |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 9:11pm
Dave Mandl:
Hey DLBRRN63, Holly. |
![]() |
![]() Fusion TV Refuseniks... |
![]() |
![]() ...some device that entranced the minds of the 20th Century - Zappa wrote a song about slime coming out of them...'I have existed for years - but very little has changed'... |

Sun. 9/29/13 9:14pm
Dave Mandl:
I'll watch Breaking Bad on DVD five years from now. That seems to be my M.O. |
![]() |
![]() Droll: a box that induces depression and anxiety. Or what the rabbit said. |
![]() |
![]() ...when the hell am I gonna watch a whole box full of a series??... |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 9:18pm
Dave Mandl:
Greetings Droll, fleep. |
![]() |
![]() ...this Mothers of Gut make me think of Adrian Belew... |
![]() |
![]() ...& now Steve Howe... |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 9:21pm
Droll:
fleep, Boxes have bad associations, television should work on packaging. Spheres, cylinders, cones... flat seems to be fashionable. AB solo material was almost never that mathy, he was more or less art pop. Fripp was the mathematician. |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 9:22pm
kent concentrate:
@BDR Oh, you must be referring to the New England Sunday Night Football game. Man, this radio time slot just can't catch a break. Get it? Catch pun on football / break pun too? |
![]() |
![]() - yeah Droll - it was the voice too I guess. Someone said Fripp did the Horizontal lines, & Belew the Vertical splashes, or the like... |
![]() |
![]() Hey, here, hi. Monica's Ms. Turntables did indeed inspire me to find some cocktails and fish. |
![]() |
![]() I have the same TVMO, Dave -- didn't watch Deadwood until the series was over, then watched 'em all from Netflix straight through. |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 9:27pm
Droll:
Adding "-y" at the end does not stop it from being "prog". Strike 1. |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 9:30pm

I guess it's quiet because everyone else at WFMU are watching the Breaking Bad finale |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 9:30pm
doca:
But we're here! |
![]() |
![]() ...PostRock - it's, like, *after* Rock - because, like, that's gone, right? - it's totally *not* rock - but yet still, uh, totally needs to absolutely reference 'Rock' in its' very name. Hope that clears it up for you... |

They named it post-rock to get around the 2% rule.
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 9:33pm
Dave Mandl:
@doca: No, I didn't mean you folks. Things just sounded unusually quiet in my headphones. Just my imagination, I'm sure. |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 9:34pm
Dave Mandl:
@kent: Aw, thanks. @12539: That's totally legal! |
![]() |
![]() The Music for Imaginary Films sounds interesting. My favorite imaginary radio personality now has his own film which I desperately need to see. That DJ being Alan Partridge. |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 9:34pm
Dave Mandl:
@Droll: If I hit a foul ball, does that count? |
![]() |
![]() ...& that's *not* the same pedantic grammatical argument against the term 'PostModern'...it's totally Post that argument... |
![]() |
![]() Oh, I thought you said "post modem". |
![]() |

If it has even the slightest whiff of an African beat, it's still R&R Unless it's not. |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 9:38pm
Droll:
I also loathe the "post-rock" term. Rock music died when it was old enough that the people playing it grew up listening to it. Mid- to late-70's, not coincidentally the same time as the birth of hip hop, which died in turn sometime during the 00's. |
![]() |
![]() ...yeah pss - the Post Office is still using dial-up modems - that's why they're going under...See - I'm on top of all this... |
![]() |
![]() ...I'm *not* saying I don't like Music that might be called 'PostRock' ! |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 9:40pm
Dave Mandl:
OK, I've got an exclusive photo, and I'll post it here first. Beautiful panorama shot taken here a few minutes ago with the new iPhone photo app. |
![]() |
![]() Categorizing the music I'm hearing is not relevant to my experience, anymore than the names of the musicians. I'm listening to vibrations. Some good, some not. |

![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 10:08pm

DaveM, Discogs says the Bennink collaborations were "1990 in various Dutch locations." They list titles, too! www.discogs.com...
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 10:32pm
Dave Mandl:
@UM: True, but still. And Evan's done a lot of good music on his own. He was musical director for the Backyardigans (kids' cartoon), I think. My daughter used to love that. |

![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 10:57pm

Hey, Marmalade. Good to have you among us. |
![]() |
![]() Excellent. Came to this material via The Holy Modal Rounders' first two records. |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 11:27pm
Dave Mandl:
@Droll: You know I'd never do that ;-) |
![]() |
![]() Watch out, Droll -- you could disappear in smoke! |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 11:30pm
Droll:
Hard to believe we've been in the "final stretch" for over an hour already. PSS, Disappear? That's usually how I appear. |
![]() |
![]() I thought Dave was planning on playing 3 album sides... |
![]() |
![]() Howdy DM..this is a nice diversion,, (gets the Opici Jug)... |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 11:33pm
Dave Mandl:
@Droll: Next week's final stretch will begin at 9:06. |

Sun. 9/29/13 11:33pm
Droll:
PSS, HA! Me too! I thought he was cueing up Tales of Topographical Oceans. |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 11:34pm
Dave Mandl:
You mean *from* Topographical Oceans, right? |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 11:35pm
Droll:
[on floor, gut spitting laughter] Yeah, the one with all the notes. |
![]() |
![]() Next week, Welcome Back, My Friends, to the Show That Never Ends... Ladies and Gentlemen, Emerson, Lake & Palmer. All 6 sides. |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 11:36pm
Dave Mandl:
@pss: Funny coincidence: Last night a good friend was telling me about the period when he played with Peter Stampfel (in the '80s, I think). |
![]() |
![]() My buddies and I smoked any number of doobies listening to that. |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 11:37pm
Dave Mandl:
(Coincidence because of your mention of the Holy Modal Rounders.) |
![]() |
![]() My admiration of Peter Stampfel is boundless -- perhaps because it is at a distance? |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 11:38pm
Dave Mandl:
@Droll: Even I had trouble getting through "Tales." |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 11:40pm
Dave Mandl:
@pss: Well, my friend had nothing bad to say about Stampfel. Seems like a very nice guy. |
![]() |
![]() I could never tell. Guess you'd have to be either super nice or super nasty to survive all the weird scenes he's been through. |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 11:43pm
Droll:
I think TfTO was what ultimately led me astray of prog. Notes per dollar, it's a great value, but you spend twice as much time trying to rinse it off. |
![]() |
![]() Speaking of which, how do you like our weather tonight, Droll? |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 11:46pm
Dave Mandl:
This same friend also told me he owns Richard Hell's old bass. I never knew that. |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 11:47pm
Droll:
PSS, You're new here -- this is how it is: Summer runs July 5th until Labor Day. They threw the switch and it's just like this until June. Well, the darkness lengthens by a few hours, but this is it. |
![]() |
![]() Already had one power outage during this show. |
Sun. 9/29/13 11:51pm

Enjoyed the stereo on that Baumann track at this hour.
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 11:52pm

PSS, Glad to hear the Kitsap PUD still enforces conservation through unplanned outage! After my first winter, I always kept plenty of firewood. |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 11:54pm
Dave Mandl:
@trish: I'm a sucker for stereo tricks. I actually didn't notice that one. |
Sun. 9/29/13 11:56pm
trish:
Worth checking out, that one. Reverb in stereo or something.
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 11:56pm
Droll:
Mandl, Thanks for editing the playlist this week. Hard to believe it's already next week's final stretch... |
![]() |
![]() I was listening to a Youngbloods album at work this week, and thought it was cool that they had included vocals-less instrumental tracks, then realized that one channel had gone out. |
![]() |
Sun. 9/29/13 11:59pm
Dave Mandl:
@Droll: Haha. It is! @pss: That's great. Same happened with me and some old Beatle records (like "Rain"). |
