Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

What's the origin of the name Topeka?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 11:56am βrian:

Never mind. "Topeka means "to dig good potatoes" in the languages of the Kansa and the Ioway." (Says wikipedia.)
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:00pm Brian in UK:

I might become gifophobic.
Avatar    Fri. 9/6/13 12:01pm listener james from westwood:

howdy, UM and all! another friday, another unsettling gif.

Avatar    Fri. 9/6/13 12:02pm Doug Schulkind:

There's Hinky Dinky without Inky. Ever think of that?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:04pm hyde:

i dig good potatoes, man
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:04pm Alex In Illinois:

Chicago means "Onion field" in some native language.

This the second week in a row that I missed Doug's show. I'll probably get a formal reprimand and it will go on my permanent record. At least I'm here for Hinky Dinky
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:06pm pacific standard simon:

@Alex In Illinois - in Re your final Q on Doug's playlist: Yes, there are; all-night DJ standards from the '60s, in fact.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:08pm hyde:

true confession: my favorite part of UM's show is often when the playlist gets long enough that I can scroll down past the creepy animated gif
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:08pm pacific standard simon:

Seattle is "The Man's" mangling of an Indian chief's name.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:08pm Uncle Michael:

Same here!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:09pm βrian:

I recall Winooski means "wild onion" in Abenaki. (Beautiful Winooski, Vermont.)
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:09pm Brian in UK:

@duke I did 100 lines for missing Bill Mac's show without prior notice. It is tough being an FMU listener.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:09pm Alex In Illinois:

Missing Doug's show is already a form of punishment, just like not being allowed to have ice cream or cake.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:10pm pacific standard simon:

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:13pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar    Fri. 9/6/13 12:13pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:14pm βrian:

Good potatoes, clearly.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:15pm Uncle Michael:

Brian, you spared me from providing an embarrassing answer to your question. We can be best spuds.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:18pm βrian:

Let us proclaim our love, then, for Anna. — Potatoes Anna. (Potatoes, parmesan, butter, rosemary optional.) Slice thinly, layer, and bake until brown.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:19pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:21pm Alex In Illinois:

@βrian: Different Natives, but the same vegatable.

Some towns in the US were named after Native American Chiefs by William Clark of Lewis & Clark. He was in charge of "Indian Affairs" for a large region, and while he was part of the whole system of displacing the Native Americans, he also was sad about it, and named towns after certain Chiefs to keep their names frombeing forgotten. He also commisioned portraites of some of them too. Can't say he was all good or all bad, but that sometimes history gets complicated and messy.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:24pm Alex In Illinois:

@Uncle Michael:
I have not had that in years! When I was a kid (in Missouri), we used have that about every week in the summer. Other evenings, it was cold potato soup, or cold cucumber soup.

Hmm. It is kind of strange that people here in the Chicago area do not have cold soup in the summer all the time.
Avatar    Fri. 9/6/13 12:25pm Doug Schulkind:

You are knee-deep in it, Uncle M.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:29pm Uncle Michael:

In the Hoopla?
Avatar    Fri. 9/6/13 12:36pm Doug Schulkind:

The frog. Knee-deep. Oh forget it.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:36pm Uncle Michael:

Sure...rib it in.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:40pm efd:

Ah Mel Torme, the Velvet Frog.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:41pm βrian:

This timeline is receding into the past. Already I'm not born yet.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:42pm Uncle Michael:

I'll return you safely to now...I promise.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:43pm Holly in NC:

EXCELLENT deep cut, UM!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:44pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Holly.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:44pm still b/p:

efd ftw
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:45pm pacific standard simon:

Is the GIF from a Louise Brooks movie?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:45pm Uncle Michael:

Go listen to efd'a Paul Humphreys interview on his archive after I'm gone. It was great.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:46pm Uncle Michael:

This track needs less saxophone.
Avatar    Fri. 9/6/13 12:46pm listener james from westwood:

it was indeed.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:47pm efd:

thanks UM and LJFW!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:48pm Uncle Michael:

I was never really that into that kind of music but I liked what I heard the other night and Paul just seemed like such a well...*bloke*.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:49pm Holly in NC:

@UM - I find sax to be integral part of the charm!
And cosign re @efd's interview w Paul Humphries - I've only recently gotten into omd, not a fan back in the day (I was very rockist) -and seriously, one of best live interviews I've ever had pleasure to listen to. Both efd & Paul beyond charming ;-)
Avatar    Fri. 9/6/13 12:52pm Doug Schulkind:

I'm sending this track to Dan Weiss.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:53pm efd:

Come on, enough about me. How 'bout that auctioneer!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:53pm Holly in NC:

Now I need/want drum accompaniment
to any auctioneering - anyone who missed Doug's show see:
Avatar    Fri. 9/6/13 12:53pm Doug Schulkind:

No I'm not.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:53pm still b/p:

That track needed more gavel.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:54pm Brian in UK:

Used to have Walk on Bye (Wait on the corner) by LeRoy.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:58pm Uncle Michael:

Brian, that was...at one time the best selling country single *of all time*. Don't know if it still is.
Avatar    Fri. 9/6/13 12:59pm listener james from westwood:

there's a record of various auctioneers floating around the fmu library. it;s reallty mesmerizing. i once heard scott williams play a track from that disc, and one from that collection of murmur-y elizabeth clare prophet "calls," simultaneously. i damn near became a smoker and a cultist by the end of it.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 12:59pm Holly in NC:

Can never, ever go wrong with Sun Ra.
Gotta leave for a bit, have great afternoon/weekend, everyone. Happy Friday!
More sax :-)
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:00pm Uncle Michael:

See ya later Holly.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:00pm Holly in NC:

Oh! @ljfw - do you like the Rounder collection Hollerin' ? Different, but appeals to me on same level
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:03pm pacific standard simon:

Going now too. Might make it back before the end.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:03pm Uncle Michael:

bye Simon.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:05pm Holly in NC:

UM, everytime I listen to your show I find it far too hard to disengage. After this DC song, please play some crappy music. Thank you in advance.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:06pm Uncle Michael:

You bet!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:13pm Holly in NC:

friggin' liar.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:14pm Uncle Michael:

dash when you hear a mic break!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:15pm Holly in NC:

Oh damn you to hell, UM, to hell, I say. NO ONE can walk out on this song, unless they're a souless cretin.
Avatar    Fri. 9/6/13 1:16pm listener james from westwood:

holly, it very much sounds like something i would like!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:23pm Uncle Michael:

We now return you to our regularly scheduled, crappy music.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:26pm hyde:

this is a hilarious tom t hall tune
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:27pm Holly in NC:

Ok, really going. Had to check Terry Allen's version of New Delhi Train, which does not improve on Little Feat. But, same Terry Allen lp (Lubbock (on Everything)) offers 'Truckload of Art', which I of couse had to listen to in full. NOW I am going, I am not even turning on sound for Tom T Hall, no I am not.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:27pm Alex In Illinois:

Paducah! That is one of the towns named by William Clark to memorialize a chief. At least according to the historical marker in Paducah,
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:27pm Uncle Michael:

Tom T. = Genius
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:29pm Uncle Michael:

Sometimes I wonder if "Chief" meant whoever got up and said "I'll go see what white-eyes wants."
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:32pm Stanley:

This is hilarious.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:34pm Uncle Michael:

Bob & Ray = Genius
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:35pm hyde:

I'm tempted to say something about Jo Ann Campbell, but I don't want to inspire anyone to say: Jo Ann Campbell = Genius
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:36pm Uncle Michael:

Not a genius! Say it.
Avatar    Fri. 9/6/13 1:37pm listener james from westwood:

either this springfield cut sounds van halen-y or van halen sounded springfieldian.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:38pm Jeff Golick:

Love Bob & Ray. Also love Chris Elliott. When asked which was his father, he would say something like, "Bob...or Ray. One of those guys."
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:39pm Uncle Michael:

I can believe it.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:39pm efd:

Avatar    Fri. 9/6/13 1:40pm listener james from westwood:

heh, this boney m would pair nicely w. that dschingis khan cut "moksau."
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:40pm northguineahills:

Boney M, didn't expect that.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:41pm Uncle Michael:

This song always comes on when I'm mowing the lawn. *shrug*
Avatar    Fri. 9/6/13 1:42pm listener james from westwood:

"moskau." bozhe moi!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:49pm northguineahills:

Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:50pm Uncle Michael:

Merle = Super genius
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:50pm hyde:

Merle is touring this fall, people!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:52pm Uncle Michael:

First time I saw Merle was right after 9/11 at a casino and there was not one jingoistic word from his lips. The man doesn't preach or pander.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:56pm northguineahills:

Well, Merle did release some records on Anti records in the last decade, and was against the Iraq War.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:57pm Uncle Michael:

And they DO smoke marijuana in Muskogee...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 1:57pm Jeff Golick:

Merle welcomes the haters: cdn0.sbnation.com...
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:00pm Uncle Michael:

That's great!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:01pm pacific standard simon:

Ever see the comic version of this that Gilbert Shelton did?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:02pm pacific standard simon:

And by "this", I mean "Chickens".
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:03pm Uncle Michael:

I have not. I would like to.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:04pm pacific standard simon:

Can be arranged.

Hi, I'm back!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:05pm pacific standard simon:

I'm proud to be a hippie from Olema.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:07pm Uncle Michael:

Hippie from Mississippi is an actual answer song
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:09pm pacific standard simon:

So's the Olema one, by The Youngbloods.
Avatar    Fri. 9/6/13 2:10pm listener james from westwood:

there is also an "asshole from el paso," but more novelty-ish.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:10pm Uncle Michael:

I don't know the Youngbloods track.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:13pm pacific standard simon:

You will! "We still take in strangers if they're haggard..." Great stuff.

So, I'm NOT going blind in one eye. But the eye dilation drops have fixed it so I can barely read the screen for the next couple hours.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:16pm Jeff Golick:

Glad to hear it, @pss! The not-going-blind part, that is. As someone who has suffered two detached retinas, I've learned (the hard way) not to mess about with one's eyeball health.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:16pm Uncle Michael:

I'm overdue for a dilated exam. Ugh. Glad you're not going blind, Simon.
Avatar    Fri. 9/6/13 2:19pm listener james from westwood:

i'm paranoid about my glaucoma risk. mom had it, so i ask about my pressure number at each visit. it's been normal so far. can't risk missing the chance to treat it early if it appears.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:19pm pacific standard simon:

Thanks, guys, and sorry to hear that, Jeff. The rest of you, take care of your eyes!
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:21pm Uncle Michael:

Next track...apologies in advance.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:21pm pacific standard simon:

Is it my imagination, Michael, or have you been on a bit of a Tradewinds jag the past few weeks?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:22pm Uncle Michael:

  Fri. 9/6/13 2:23pm badseed:

nick sounds a little speedy today
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:23pm Alex In Illinois:

Is this being played at the intended speed?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:24pm Uncle Michael:

I'm afraid so.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:24pm pacific standard simon:

Heh. My wife has a deep crush on Nick. I should make her listen.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:25pm Alex In Illinois:

I think I have heard a different version, but this one is groovier.

Avatar    Fri. 9/6/13 2:31pm listener james from westwood:

hell, thurl at 16 rpm would be terrifying
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:31pm Uncle Michael:

Would it be recognizable as a human voice?
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:32pm pacific standard simon:

No kidding! Reports just in from earthquake detection.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:35pm Uncle Michael:

Mccartneyesque bass line on this one.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:36pm Jeff Golick:

Always liked the production on this EC&A cut.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:36pm pacific standard simon:

Thanks, Simon.
Avatar Fri. 9/6/13 2:41pm Jeff Golick:

It's days like this (i.e., Fridays, from 9am-3pm) that make it gloriously apparent how many sublime sounds there are yet to be discovered.
