Avatar Mon. 8/26/13 1:17pm Tony Coulter:

This week's "Tape Hiss" features over an hour of newly rediscovered 1977 recordings from the George-Edwards Group, plus rarities from Mother Mallard and Gene Lubin.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:00pm Uncle Michael:

Were they in with the cosmic airbrushed t-shirts and the Puma Clydes?
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:00pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Make it so.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:00pm DCE:

Tony C, how the heck are ya?
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:01pm Tony Coulter:

Hey all -- nice to see you here!
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:02pm Kay:

Was this last week's show brought to us now free of technical difficulties?
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:03pm Tony Coulter:

Well, what was intended to be last week's show, yes. Hi, Kay!
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:03pm Rich in Washington:

Hey, Tony! How's tricks?
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:04pm Rich in Washington:

I will be listening loudly in the room but only sporadically be near a keyboard.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:05pm listener james from westwood:

got in just in time for the triple greetings! good tuesday, all, and happy to hear ya, tony!
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:08pm Tony Coulter:

Heya, Rich & Listener James!
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:10pm DCE:

new to me, but this is very interesting reading:
mothermallard.com...
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:10pm Tony Coulter:

By the by, Mother Mallard is also known as Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Co. They turned into a sort of systems music/minimalist ensemble.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:13pm Kay:

Oh good, because I was really impressed by the sneak peek of the artist the week before on your "regular" show.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:14pm Carmichael:

Hi Tony, have never heard of this duo. Found out Edward Balian is a professor at CSU San Marcos. Raymond George has a website, but its in Japanese.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:15pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Carmichael! George-Edwards have two archival albums on Drag City.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:15pm Carmichael:

George-Edwards Group, I mean. I inferred from your list that they wer first up.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:17pm Tony Coulter:

Nope -- they're the "headliner," so they're last. But I knew what you meant....
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:18pm Tony Coulter:

They're the headliners 'cause the stuff I'll be playing is unreleased, and in fact just recently (re)discovered.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:21pm Tony Coulter:

But Mother Mallard and Gene Lubin are headliners too -- on my show, anyhow.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:23pm northguineahills:

Yeah, all I have of Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Co. is "Like a Duck to Water".
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:23pm northguineahills:

Found it a record store in FL in the mid 90s, had no idea who they were, just liked the instrumentation listed, and bought w/o listening to it, and was rewarded.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:24pm Tony Coulter:

Hola. NGH! If you've got "Like a Duck" you'll back me up that this early stuff is quite different.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:26pm northguineahills:

Yep, Like a Duck is in a Terry Riley vein.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:27pm Carmichael:

This is timely for me, after just having seen the Moog documentary a few days ago.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:29pm Tony Coulter:

From what I remember, Mother Mallard was using the moog even before it was commercially available. They worked directly with Robert M.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:31pm Carmichael:

Yes, they have an informative website. Was just reading David Borden's article about being the Chief Idiot for Moog, testing the gear before it went public.
  Tue. 8/27/13 12:34pm MrFab:

Hi dere, everybodys. This song: Beefheart goes techno-pop!
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:34pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Fab!
  Tue. 8/27/13 12:36pm MrFab:

I also only know Borden/Mallard from his '70s stuff so this is quite a revelation. I thought that Gershon Kinglsey's First Moog Quartet was the first moog band - this muddies the historical waters a bit.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:36pm listener james from westwood:

unjustly overlooked, this combo was. glad to hear 'em!
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:43pm Tony Coulter:

For some reason, this CD was barely ever available -- maybe just sold at concerts or through their "fan club"/Web site.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:45pm glenn:

i want to be a chief idiot.

cue bad jokes in 5.... 4.... 3... 1 off blast!
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 12:47pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Chief!
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 1:00pm Tony Coulter:

This one features vocals by the Old Codger.....
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 1:03pm Rich in Washington:

Wow.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 1:04pm listener james from westwood:

hope the codg gets resids on that one. old-style paper shirt collars are expensive.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 1:06pm glenn:

and have you looked at the cost of spats lately?
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 1:14pm Tony Coulter:

I wish more rock bands used the marimba.
  Tue. 8/27/13 1:18pm MrFab:

I'd start a band with a marimba. Any marimba-ists in LA?
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 1:29pm northguineahills:

Ok, ducking out for lunch. Superb zounds, Tony!
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 1:29pm glenn:

none that will admit it, anyway.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 1:29pm Mr. Lowry:

"Marimbers"?
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 1:31pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, Mr. Lowry!
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 1:32pm Tony Coulter:

Mario & the Mighty Marimba Men?
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 1:33pm Mr. Lowry:

Even better.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 1:37pm listener james from westwood:

diggin' the zounds on this end, too!
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 1:39pm Tony Coulter:

The Zound of Music....
Tue. 8/27/13 1:40pm Fake Ed Marimba:

Gene Lubin was influenced by Morrison/VanVliet? Me Too.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 1:43pm Tony Coulter:

Felicidad, Fake Ed!
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 1:54pm listener james from westwood:

i really need to stop scheduling laundry for tape hiss days. don't want to miss a note!
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 1:58pm glenn:

or you could get machines and stop pounding your clothes with a rock on the banks of a river.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 2:12pm Tony Coulter:

People of the World: Are you receiving me?
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 2:20pm listener james from westwood:

hearing you loud and clear!
glenn, the machines might watch over my shoulder while i edit and begin underbidding my jobs!
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 2:22pm Uncle Michael:

I DON"T HAVE TIME TO CHAT AND IT STINKS.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 2:25pm Tony Coulter:

Uh-oh: I see it's an all-cap day.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 2:27pm Uncle Michael:

*SIGH*
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 2:35pm listener james from westwood:

it balances out with my lowercase nitwittery.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 2:40pm Tony Coulter:

As just mentioned, I found these Malachi tracks on youtube. They were put up by the band and are, as far as I know, unreleased otherwise. Same story with the Rastus.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 2:41pm glenn:

they remind me of mandy moore in saved.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 2:48pm Tony Coulter:

I feel like I'm breaking some kind of law by playing vinyl on a "Tape Hiss" show -- but, well, this Apothecary track is from an LP. What can I say: I'm a rebel.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 2:49pm Tony Coulter:

As mentioned, I'm off next week. Thom Jones -- aka DDJJJ66 -- will be filling in. Be sure to show him a good time.
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 2:55pm Stanley:

Well, I enjoyed what I heard.
Ta, Tonee
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 2:55pm listener james from westwood:

thanks, tony! enjoy the break!
Avatar Tue. 8/27/13 2:56pm Tony Coulter:

See you in two weeks everybody! Thanks for tuning in.
