"I don't feel like I get germs when I hold money. Money has a certain kind of amnesty. I feel, when I'm holding money, that the dollar bill has no more germs on it than my hands do. When I pass my hand over money, it becomes perfectly clean to me. I don't know where it's been—who's touched it and with what—but that's all erased the moment I touch it."

Andy Warhol (Aug. 6, 1928-Feb. 22, 1987)

You know, I think maybe I have enough song poems.
  Wed. 7/31/13 4:44pm Ralphine:

That Twilight Zone song was from the episode about the guy that stole a dead guy's shoes.
Avatar    Wed. 7/31/13 4:46pm Irwin:

@Droll: Yes. Seasons 4 and 5 are full of embarrassingly bad episodes. Serling was bored by then, but the series was incredibly popular, so they renewed and kept Serling chained to his typewriter. He churned out some Ed Wood-grade stuff. Then they mercifully killed off the show.
Avatar    Wed. 7/31/13 4:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...like unforgetable literature in the form of Network TV...then well yeah the path lead to Night Gallery...

Let me guess, Shatner shows up in season 4 or 5?
Avatar    Wed. 7/31/13 4:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Caryn's watching us & having a larf...
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 4:51pm rrg:

The entire series is available on Blu-Ray, with zillions upon zillions of special things including radio versions, commentaries, and much more. Far too much to ingest. Intimidating.
Avatar    Wed. 7/31/13 4:51pm Irwin:

Note on Bass Drum of Death: It's SUPPOSED to sound like shit. The spirit of Joe Meek lives on.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 4:52pm rrg:

Shatner is earlier, and his stuff is excellent, thank you very much.
Avatar    Wed. 7/31/13 4:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 4:52pm Caryn:

@Droll: Shatner shows up in season 2. But his most famous appearance was in season 5.

Right, "Nightmare at 30,000 Feet". Still great even though Season 5.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 4:54pm Denise in DC:

rrg: There is no such thing as enough song-poems.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 4:54pm rrg:

That's how we all remember them. And everything, really. "The one about..." We don't usually remember titles unless we're Big Old Fans.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 4:55pm Denise in DC:

Shatner's Season 2 appearance is meh. The Season 5 appearance is classic.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 4:55pm rrg:

I have thousands, Denise, but yes, maybe you're right.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 4:56pm Droll:

Used tastefully as an effect distorted drums are great! Industrial music uses that style extensively to great effect.

Sorry to offend Shatner lovers, I grew up with the Yangs and Cons speech, I love him for what he is: Canadian.
Avatar    Wed. 7/31/13 4:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...most SciFi pedaled now is really crap ActionAdventure - No Ideas...partly because there's quite enuff FutureShock in a handheld device I figures - partly because people are stooo-ped gun violence & explosion junkies...
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 4:57pm rrg:

Shatner transcends nationality.
  Wed. 7/31/13 4:57pm Ralphine:

RRG: Do you have the song poem about knowing the difference between big wood and brush?
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 4:58pm rrg:

And the Yangs and Comes speech was Gene Roddenberry's fault, so blame him. Easy to do since he can no longer defend himself even if he ever felt the need.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 4:59pm Denise in DC:

Shatner transcends, period.

Member of both the First and Second Churches of Shatnerology here.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 4:59pm rrg:

Yes, Ralphine, I have that one here in my iTunes. I do indeed know the difference between Big Wood and Brush.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 4:59pm Caryn:

@Droll: I love his "I'm William Shatner, and I'm a Canadian!" speech.

@RRN63: I think a lot of modern scifi is either action adventure with little in terms of big ideas, or a mishmash of too many clever ideas without an actual sensible plot. Both are problematic. But luckily there are always the bright spots and exceptions.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 5:00pm Denise in DC:

Re: the Monkees: I saw the surviving three in DC a week and a half ago. Peter's voice is even worse than it used to be, and the show dragged when they got to the more-esoteric stuff (HEAD era and beyond), but I had a blast nonetheless.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 5:01pm rrg:

I have heard this before. On this very program. And I'm pleased to hear it again.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 5:02pm rrg:

I SO wish I could have seen The Monkees on that tour.
Avatar    Wed. 7/31/13 5:02pm Ike:

RRN63, check out the new novel "Rapture of the Nerds" by Doctorow & Stross for some fascinating ideas. It's about when humanity gets spammed with get-evolved-quick schemes. I wonder if Serling would've liked it or if it would've made his brain explode.

- there's always been the divide twixt Lit & Screen in SciFi - TwilightZone played against that.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 5:05pm Droll:

rrg, Roddenberry was responsible for the nationalist aspects of the TV show? I always assumed TV execs specified 7 pieces of schlock writers needed to incorporate per show, sometimes it was difficult to work in with subtlety.
Avatar    Wed. 7/31/13 5:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

StarTrek of course was admirably topical (race, cold war).
- & Schlock has its' appeal (I love Godzilla & daikaiju - actually not w/out Symbolic import)...
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 5:07pm rrg:

That particular episode was scripted by Roddenberry himself, that's all I mean.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 5:08pm Denise in DC:

rrg, the tour's not over -- maybe you can still catch them?

One of the things that makes hippies jamming interesting is that they all grew up listening to and playing some other style of music. These drums and bass parts are all jazz devices: swinging madly, walking bass, etc.
  Wed. 7/31/13 5:20pm Ralphine:

So Roddenberry was responsible for the Ee Plebneesta?
Avatar    Wed. 7/31/13 5:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- is 'E Pleb Neesta' the one where they are reciting a remnant of the Pledge of Allegiance on some planet?
Wed. 7/31/13 5:28pm Listening Out There:

(I'm not sure what was commented upon RE Bruce and Baker earlier...)
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 5:28pm rrg:

Not the Pledge of Allegiance, but yes.

Wed. 7/31/13 5:33pm Listening Out There:

RRG: It's pretty good...and Baker needs the money, oddly enough. As the drummer, he missed out on the Cream royalites. Most went to Bruce and their lyricist...

Star Trek Punk Rock band? Are there other kinds of Star Trek bands? Nothing says punk like "We come in peace" and then you shoot to kill. Phasers on stun? Stun is for sissies!

I love the detail that No Kill I, before becoming a Star Trek-inspired band, was a Hogan's Heroes-themed band. WFMU material right there!
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 5:48pm Caryn:

@Droll: plenty of scifi-inspired bands out there. And plenty who just got their names from Star Trek. T'Pau comes to mind.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 5:48pm Droll:

[saucer eyed] Caryn, that's too much! I wonder what elements from the stage show and song lyrics they were able to carry over to the new band. Lots of crossover, actually.

This is all excellent and all that, Irwin, but LL and I still want to hear Patti Page singing that doggy song.

Speaking of drummers, is that Roy Haynes playing with Andrew Hill?

Have a swell week all. And remember, it's darkest just before Bones says "It's worse than that, he's dead, Jim!" Ye cannot change the laws of physics, and all that.
Avatar Wed. 7/31/13 5:57pm Caryn:

Apparently, there's another Star Trek punk band, called The Vulcaneers. And apparently there's also a No Kill I: The Next Generation. I'm fascinated.

All right, if you say so.

I'll be back again some day. And so will you.

Thanks, Mr. Irwin.

@Droll: No Kill I have a link page for Star Trek bands: www.nokilli.com...
