good seepage
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:07pm fred:

This is beautiful, too bad I can't clicky-star it. Kurt, looks like your comment is missing a link to the track listing
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:09pm Cheri Pi:

Heya DJKGitterites!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:10pm Cheri Pi:

the people demand clicky stars!!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:11pm Cheri Pi:

That's more like it. I will now apply the clicky-star maneuver.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:13pm fred:

Done! You beat me to it, Cheri, but that's no wonder as you coined clicky-star in the first place
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:13pm Kurt Gottschalk:

that's as much info as i can find without learning japanese.

hello, everyone! thanks for listening!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:14pm Cheri Pi:

I learned Clicky Stars from watching the Clicky-Stardust Cowboy, the good Reverend TD himself.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:15pm fred:

@Kurt: next time you'll have to come in early and ask Keili
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:16pm Kurt Gottschalk:

good point, fred! she might still be in the house.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:17pm fred:

@Cheri: I stand both corrected and in awe of that luminary. Where is he by the way, it's not quite beersie time yet
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:18pm Cheri Pi:

I'll try and translate it, for everyone who wants to take a stab at the 3rd track it's "浜下り アキカラ節~流れ舟"
  Fri. 7/26/13 3:19pm Dean:

"Ambush," right up there with "Stairway to Heaven" when it comes to classic tunes!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:20pm fred:

Pipa!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:22pm northguineahills:

Min Xiao-Fen did a great album w/ Derek Bailey.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:23pm Cheri Pi:

kurt, try this: Hamauri akikara bushi nagare fune
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:24pm Kurt Gottschalk:

I love MXF and DB together!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:24pm fred:

This is my favorite instrument, now why won't that clicky-star light up?
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:25pm Jorges Horrors:

- @ thrift store I work @ here
- a 'I'm not Johnny Ramone' T-Shirt came in
- so nice to see gif of early DeeDee here (... :p ...)

- you see a pipa or a Chinese violin (correct term? - looks like a dowel w/ one string no frets & a leetle resonator...)
- & you think - 'right - what can *that* do?!'
...then a Master gets down & leaves you totally slack-jawed...
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:27pm fred:

@RevRab: I think you're thinking of the erhu there
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:28pm Cheri Pi:

Beersies??!!@@##$$ he must be in a meeting.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:28pm Jorges Horrors:

...when I saw a Pipa performance he did a many-centuries old song about a battle
- it was ijmpressionistic - like Hendrix doing 'StarSpangledBanner' - !!
...now hearing 'ambush' I'm wondering if Pipa pieces are generally 'narrative' - ??
- Ta fred!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:31pm Jorges Horrors:

Happy 70 Jagger.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:32pm fred:

In my experience a lot of "classical" pipa pieces are narrative, but that may come from being classical. I saw Wu Man enough to know it can be something else too. BTW the erhu has two strings, there's a gifted player on my way from work to my fave venue, so I should know
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:33pm Jorges Horrors:

Ta fred! : )
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:34pm maestroso:

Two-stringed captive bow. Lovely sound. Hopefully I'll get to hear some live playing when I return to China later this year.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:34pm Cheri Pi:

OK here it is, wrong track, this is track 5: Chidori no medorē: Hamachidoribushi/ Shimajiri Chidori/ shimochidori
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:35pm northguineahills:

I love that Tzadik Jon record!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:35pm Cheri Pi:

Keili, are you out there? Can you Beast this into Eego? 千鳥のメドレー:浜千鳥節/島尻千鳥/下千鳥
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:35pm Jorges Horrors:

...to put the fine point on it:
- I was struck that here was this composition from the other side of the globe - centuries old
- & it was rather like Jimi simulating battle sounds on his guitar-family instrument - !!
  Fri. 7/26/13 3:36pm Dean:

Pipa music covers the field: http://www.nonesuch.com/albums/music-of-the-pipa

Hugo Masters were the project of a Chinese recording engineer, "Hugo," who lead an eponymous label devoted to salvaging a dying genre of classical music.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:38pm Jorges Horrors:

- Cheers Dean.
- break over - back before Petula...
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:39pm fred:

@RevRab: check out Kyrgyz Komuz playing!
  Fri. 7/26/13 3:42pm Dean:

Cheers! This may be the first WFMU playlist half of which so far includes tunes from my own collection: Ambush, Hugo Masters, this Baron track...
  Fri. 7/26/13 3:48pm common:

I love the word "paw".
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 3:58pm Carmichael:

OK, back in the saddle, trying to work my way out of today so I can enjoy 2 weeks of vacay. Millions of beersies!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 4:06pm fred:

@Carm: finally a battle cry I can join!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 4:14pm Mike East:

ah, but the question persists...what type of beersy shall I get tonight? fancy or unfancy?
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 4:15pm fred:

@Mike East: the only answer is: both. That leaves the order unsettled though
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 4:18pm Carmichael:

PLease order lots of the kind you can most easily QUAFF!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 4:21pm Mike East:

I had a seasonal Blue Moon last week that was sweetened with agave nectar. It was pretty tasty.
Both is a good idea, fred...I'll have to check my finances.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 4:25pm fred:

Weirdly enough, the only kind of beersie I can down in quantity is Guinness. For a change of pace I'd recommend the red Kasteel, but be forwarned: this is a highly treacherous beverage. We called it "casse-tête rouge" for a reason
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 4:25pm Carmichael:

I saw that agave nectar ale in the store. I'll give her a test drive this weekend.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 4:29pm northguineahills:

I saw that ancient Egyptian dogfish ale at my bodega. I'm going to give her a whirl tonight, since the gf will be watching Beck.
  Fri. 7/26/13 4:30pm Dean:

From the WFMU home page: http://beerlabelsinmotion.tumblr.com/
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 4:31pm northguineahills:

@Mike East: porque no ambos?
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 4:31pm northguineahills:

I'll be imbibing fancy and cheap-ass beer tonight.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 4:32pm northguineahills:

This is the only Mingus album I own.
  Fri. 7/26/13 4:33pm BBen:

what song are you talking over?
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 4:34pm Kurt Gottschalk:

talking over "Vuelvo a vivir, vuelvo a cantar" by Sabú played at the wrong speed. that's Sabú in Minnesota Jeff's wonderful gif as well!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 4:34pm Kurt Gottschalk:

NGH: you need M Presents M, then.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 4:34pm Mike East:

@ngh - I'm thinkin' it will be...just may have to stop at the ATM on the way home.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 4:41pm fred:

@Mike East: as long as you're being reasonable about it. Don't get yourself a DUI
  Fri. 7/26/13 4:41pm Bonner Ben:

thanks!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 4:49pm fred:

Full disclosure: I don't drive. I chose my camp years ago, maybe thanks to a "drink or drive" campaign decades old
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 4:53pm northguineahills:

I only drive if I leave the city.
  Fri. 7/26/13 4:54pm common:

good weekends everybody! time for beers!!!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 4:55pm Mike East:

on Friday nights, once I'm home, I stay home. My family needs me. Also, I can't drink too much tonight. I've been waking up every half hour or so to check on my daughter the past few nights....she came down with pneumonia and I'm worried as shit about her.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 4:55pm northguineahills:

laterz, common!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 4:58pm Carmichael:

Kurt, is that Sabu of Gunga Din fame?
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:05pm Kurt Gottschalk:

carm, that i don't know.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:08pm Carmichael:

Upon further review, It could not be him. THAT Sabu died in 1963. Hmmm ...
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:13pm Carmichael:

That could be Paul Martinez, a Latin singer known as Sabu.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:20pm northguineahills:

You should give her some beer. Works for my upper respiratory infections (could be just a placebo).
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:24pm Uncle Michael:

The "P" in IPA is for placebo.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:25pm Mike East:

Think I'm just gonna stick to the medicine the dr. gave us on this one. Thanks, though.
  Fri. 7/26/13 5:25pm frenchee:

Prince lounges!
Me likeee
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:26pm fred:

@Mike East: Do what you have to do. I defy anybody to challenge my commitment to booze, but your daughter's health ranks higher than a older-than-me Islay
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:27pm Kurt Gottschalk:

frenchee! what are you doing not in the friendship society?
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:28pm Uncle Michael:

Seriously...look at me....they let anybody in.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:29pm Kurt Gottschalk:

HA!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:31pm Carmichael:

Como Era, the Perry Como era.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:32pm Uncle Michael:

This is the most laid back version of La Paloma I've ever heard.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:32pm Kurt Gottschalk:

HAx2!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:37pm steve:

super show today Kurt
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:37pm Kurt Gottschalk:

HAx2=Perry Como
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:37pm northguineahills:

Ok, all of the beer talk made me go downstairs for one. OK, working again.
  Fri. 7/26/13 5:38pm frenchee:

I am a LURKER
  Fri. 7/26/13 5:39pm frenchee:

also can't commit to any one avatar
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:39pm Carmichael:

Yee HAWWW! Go Waylon!!

@frenchee: neither can I, but that doesn't stop me.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:39pm Kurt Gottschalk:

you're always welcome to lurk around here, french!
  Fri. 7/26/13 5:40pm fRED:

Nice one Kurt!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:41pm northguineahills:

ahhhh, I only have the original Waylon live LP. Didn't recognize this song.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:44pm Jorges Horrors:

...I enjoy dif. varieties of half&halves w/ Guinness - & the necessity of coming up w/ names for the combos (like Black & ---)...
- you never drink on an empty stomach w/ Guinness - it's a meal like a Snickers - which speaks to what fred says 4:25 I believe...plus it ain't that strong alkyhol-wise...
Mike: Wellness to your daughter!
...Clash in mind today...
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:47pm Mike East:

thanks, Jorges. Good weekend all!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:49pm fred:

@RevRab: In case you missed my earlier recommendation: check out Kyrgyz Komuz players, they do the Jimi thing right
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:50pm fred:

Clash/Slits segue: clap clap clap
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:54pm northguineahills:

Hope the weekend treats your daughter right, and you get some rest Mike.

Enjoy the next few days everyone.

Thanks Kurt!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:55pm Jorges Horrors:

...as much as Rock has been Documented & calcified into its' own museum-ed Classicism
- Punk was too successful in its' mission to last no more than two minutes & obliterate itself! : There is still so much to learn (for myself anyhow) about Punk & Hardcore - & who is Playing / Teaching it - ?!?...
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:56pm northguineahills:

E Pants!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:56pm Jorges Horrors:

...or for Punks - BondoPants...
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:57pm fred:

No teachers, teach yourself
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:58pm Jorges Horrors:

Ah.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 5:59pm unununun:

"Instant Hit" was actually about Keith Levene. "So Tough" is about Lydon and Vicious.

Thank you Kurt for the set!
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 6:00pm fred:

sources of learning are everywhere, just keep your eyes open
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 6:01pm Jorges Horrors:

- of course. Good advice. I still think Punk & esp. Hardcore are under-documented & under-credited.
Avatar Fri. 7/26/13 6:04pm Jorges Horrors:

- esp. considering *everything* has a Documentary (sort of) these days...
