There are missing diacriticals on the album name for this Anthony Davis cut. But I am not feeling hyper(dia)critical enough to add them...

@pss: Were you raised on Peter and Wolf, as narrated by Sterling Holloway?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/24/13 12:49pm pacific standard simon:

That, and assorted Warner Bros. cartoons. Some Tex Avery stuff, I guess.

Tex Avery can't be beat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 6/24/13 1:06pm Carmichael:

I was surprised later in life that much big band music DIDN'T come from cartoons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 6/24/13 1:12pm pacific standard simon:

As I'm sure is the case with many a hipster, cartoons and old movies were my gateway drugs to "grandparent music".
Avatar    Mon. 6/24/13 1:20pm Jeff Golick:

I was certainly whacked out of my mind on Merrie Melodies for most of my childhood. en.wikipedia.org...

I'm sure a lot of us had the dots connected for us with the releases of the first Raymond Scott CD and the Carl Stalling Project, as well.
Avatar    Mon. 6/24/13 1:23pm Jeff Golick:

@UM, yup those were biggies.

@Doug: good ears, as ever.
Avatar    Mon. 6/24/13 1:23pm listener james from westwood:

between classical music and the great american songbook, not sure where else i'd have picked up so many bits of sonic history aside from pre- and postwar cartoons
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 6/24/13 1:27pm Uncle Michael:

I've been watching films from the '30s and '40s for as long as I've been watching cartoons. I give Mack Sennett as much credit as anyone for my awareness of pre-war culture.

Iceland was part the Kingdom of Norway until the Kalmar Union of Sweeden, Norway and Denmark in 1415. In 1523 Sweeden left the Union which became the crown of Norway-Denmark until the Napoleanic Wars, which Norway gained it's independence from Denmark, hence Iceland was ruled by until it's formal independence in 1918 w/ the exception of the US-British occupation of WWII.
Avatar Mon. 6/24/13 1:38pm northguineahills:

Yes, instead of visiting the geysers, I took the historical and cultural tours of Iceland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 6/24/13 1:39pm Uncle Michael:

I find it fascinating that when Norway became independent, what they decided they wanted was a monarchy...so they went to Sweden to see if they had a spare prince.
Avatar Mon. 6/24/13 2:14pm northguineahills:

I like that, "a spare prince".

Beginning this Wednesday at 2pm, a new (old) show is joining the Drummer Stream: Ken's Last Ever Radio Extravaganza, which has been on the radio for 19 years in one form or another—at many different locations, including WFMU, but now at WTJU at the University of Virginia—will be simulcasting its broadcast on GTDR. The show, an amazing live-produced experimental sound collage, with listener call-in participation, will air 2-4pm, immediately after Amanda's Nazario Scenario.

The host is WFMU's own maestro of the webwaves: KENZO!

Here is a link to Kenzo's program page:

And while I have your attention:
Tomorrow, from 12-3pm (ET) Thom Jones, aka DDDJJJ666, will be filling in for Tony Coulter.
