good tuesday, all!
when i saw vintage nfl films footage on the tv at the gym this a.m., i had a feeling we'd lost a classic player.
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 5:58pm Doug Schulkind:

If we lost a Vlassic player, we'd be in a pickle.

Well well well, if it isn't Artie!

I hope you're well, Artie.

Cool and clear after only thirty feet of drilling, I'm well indeed.

If you strike oil, be sure to share with your fellow Drummersomey Hillbillies.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 6:14pm Ike:

Hello Doug. I notice your competition this evening on the main channel is "Catch-all code for archives of random shows/events." Scintillating, but I'd say "Give the Drummer Some" is probably a better title overall.
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 6:15pm Doug Schulkind:

Damn, I was gonna use "Catch-all code for archives of random shows/events" as my next show title!
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 6:17pm northguineahills:

Todd-o-phonic Todd played a Fearsome Foursome 45 this morning.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 6:18pm davex:

Doug: You really should!
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 6:19pm Doug Schulkind:

Probably the same one that will end the coming set...
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 6:20pm Doug Schulkind:

NO! I have a different Fearsome Foursome 45!
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 6:20pm fleep:

Whew!

Hey fleep, you're in deep now. Don't try to fight it.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 6:29pm Uncle Michael:

Been out listening on the mower. Great stuff...though I had The Deacon Is Movin' In in my show folder BEFORE the news broke. Grr...
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 6:30pm Uncle Michael:

Doug, the book you referenced is The First Fifty Years. I had it and loved it.
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 6:30pm Doug Schulkind:

Someone is moving their lawn just down the street from me and the aroma of new-cut grass is heady and wonderful. Just like you, Uncle Michael.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 6:31pm Uncle Michael:

I remember the pages that showed the evolution of the uniforms and equipment. George Halas as a Decatur Staley...and the full page image of the state of the art was Bob Lily!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 6:32pm listener james from westwood:

thank the nine christs for fine music like this. as i listen, i am fact-checking the ages of the members of prefab boy band one direction. oy.
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 6:32pm Doug Schulkind:

Yes, that's right, UM. Nine-year-old me gave that book to my father, then didn't relinquish it for years. Do you remember that photo of our man Deacon flying over the offensive line?
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 6:33pm Doug Schulkind:

@LJFW
It's that tenth christ you gotta watch out for.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 6:33pm Matt from Springfield:

Oh wow, a colleague said today that "one of his heroes", Deacon Jones "just died"--didn't know it was just just now died.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 6:33pm Uncle Michael:

I do...but not so clearly like you do. I remember a great picture of my man Butkus.

Apropos of nothing: My wife's grandfather played for Amos Alonzo Stagg.

Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 6:41pm Matt from Springfield:

Totally not thrilled with George Allen (Jr), and think they were better Redskins coaches than George Allen (Sr), but the Coach Allen was very loyal to his players, so no offense taken to Deacon stumping for his son.
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 6:43pm Doug Schulkind:

@Matt from S
You have it exactly right about Allen/Jones. George Allen Sr was fiercely to his players. He always called Jones the greatest defensive end in NFL history. I believe Allen introduced Jones for his Hall of Fame induction speech. Jones was obviously be loyal to Allen, Jr.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 6:44pm duke:

Fare thee well Deacon Jones
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 6:44pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 6:48pm Matt from Springfield:

The East Texas Serenaders are a welcome recurring band on GTDS--pretty cool of you to know their members, hyde!
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 6:48pm Doug Schulkind:

Well these tracks I recorded off Spotify really sound shitty. I'm guessing they do that on purpose. I am such an emeffing cheapskate.

Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 6:53pm Matt from Springfield:

Wray Men!!

@hyde: That's why there were so many fiddlers named "Lefty"! :)
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 6:53pm Doug Schulkind:

If you want your children to grow up a whole lot in a short time, drag 'em into the room for this next and final track. It tells the truth and the nothing but the filthy truth.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 6:54pm ndbob:

excellent show Deacon Doug!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 6:54pm Matt from Springfield:

Oh wow, Deacon was one of the four (along with George Plimpton) who held down Sirhan Sirhan at the Ambassador Hotel right after he assassinated Robert Kennedy: ""So I see George Plimpton has the gun pointed at his face, and I'm concerned that it is going to go off, so I put my hand under the trigger housing and I pulled back the hammer so it couldn't strike. I wrench the gun from Sirhan. I find the pin and I ripped it out and held it. Now I have the gun in my hand, so I shove it in my pocket." "
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 6:54pm hyde:

@Doug awful funereal here today. but good pickup tune to go out on. oh, didn't he ramble.
Avatar Tue. 6/4/13 6:55pm Doug Schulkind:

@Matt from Springfield
No, that was Rosey Grier.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 6:56pm Matt from Springfield:

Aaah, I'm stupid--I linked to the last surviving member of the Foursome, Rosey Grier, and quoted from his page. Please attribute the above to him! :D
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 6:57pm Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: Good thing the children don't speak Cajun!! ;)

@Artie - dang, as a fellow NCer I perhaps stupidly assumed you'd be down w the long-running Mt Olive boycott.
Always 2 sides :-)

Unitas is GOING DOWN.
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 6:58pm davex:

Doug: Great set - who knew there were so many songs with the same original name!
Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 6:59pm Matt from Springfield:

Avatar    Tue. 6/4/13 7:00pm Matt from Springfield:

Have a great evenin', everyone!
Avatar    Wed. 6/5/13 9:42am Artie:

@Holly: Farm Labor Organizing Committee was able to organize Mt Olive way back in 2004, and called off the boycott soon after. 6000+ guest workers covered under collective bargaining agreement.
Avatar Sat. 6/8/13 12:09pm bobdc:

(Because of some travel, I'm a little behind on listening to your shows.) Jones' singing career reminded me of a bit of confusion I had when I was about 12: I knew that "Jim" is short for "James," and that actors are sometimes singers, and that Jim Brown the running back was also an actor; a schoolmate had to explain to me that James Brown was not the same person.
Avatar Sat. 6/8/13 12:11pm Doug Schulkind:

@bobdc
I think if Jim Brown and James Brown had been the same person, the universe would have imploded. In a good way.
