The narrating voice on this almost sounds like Jimmy "Dyn-O-Mite" Walker.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
listener james from westwood:

ngh, scott and jim price will rename themselves jeff to keep the name mojo going for today.
wasn't this also a groove armada cut some time earlier that decade? hadn't heard this version before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
Jeff Golick:

I'm basically a sucker for any band with two drummers.

And Joe McPhee, natch.

Hey there, I see you, Dan in Seattle!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm
Jeff Golick:

@LJFW: Your musical knowledge knows no bounds! NO BOUNDS! You are correct, this is a cover of the Groove Armanda "tune." The Thing with Cato Salsa Experience (two bands), and Joe McPhee (legend).

Straight outta Norway.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
listener james from westwood:

thanks! i defer to the collective and host genius here on musical lineages, but i'll take 600 points in the "early 00s dance cuts" category and select again!
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 12:16pm
Uncle Michael:

How about THREE drummers (ok, only two playing traps but timbales puts it close)? encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com...

@LJFW
Way to phrase your answer in the form of a question!
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 12:18pm

what is twerking?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
Jeff Golick:

The gong is a nice touch there, @UM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm

@holland oats
I believe it is using your ass to send tweets. While a work.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
listener james from westwood:

"twerking" = tweaking on meth whilst at work?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
Jeff Golick:

I'll take Miami Bass for $200, Alex.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 12:19pm

Twerking is extreme booty shake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
Jeff Golick:

Google twerk + gif and we'll see you back in a few weeks...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
Doug Schulkind:

Jesus, EVERYBODY is doing covers of Theme De Yoyo these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
Jeff Golick:

I believe that even includes Mr. Schulkind. Doug?
Avatar 12:24pm
northguineahills:

If these days includes 2002 (from my example)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
Doug Schulkind:

Any fool with a hairbrush for a mic and some Limburger cheese can do a cover of Theme De Yoyo.

By the way, Jeff this song is actually "Mra" not "MRA." That's a mistake I made for about 20 years of playlists before I learned that "Mra" was actually the nickname of South African musician Christopher Columbus Ngcukana.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm
Jeff Golick:

[stupid Discogs.com -- I changed it from Mra to comply!]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm
Doug Schulkind:

The song title actually appears as "MRA" on a number of recordings. Go have some Limburger and shake it off.
Avatar 12:31pm
northguineahills:

Now I want some Limburger cheese.
Avatar 🦀 12:32pm

no relation to Mra by Hugh Masekela I guess

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
Doug Schulkind:

@duke
No that's the same tune. Masekela is covering the tune by Dudu Pukwana.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 12:40pm

never actually had limburger; a rowdy stilton is the strongest cheese i've yet sampled.

This is a gorgeous album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
Jeff Golick:

No argument here, @duke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
Doug Schulkind:

One of my favorite tunes, ever. Weston recorded and distributed his own record in 1964 with the original version of African Cookbook. Unsurprisingly, record sales were abysmal and the LP languished until Atlantic reissued it under the name "African Cookbook," in 1972.

To the eternal joy and grateful delight of me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
Jeff Golick:

Here's that Randy Weston album: ajbenjamin2beta.blogspot.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
Doug Schulkind:

For a while, that Nothing Is blog took over in my heart of hearts for the brilliant Church Number 9 blog. Now that aortic chamber is occupied by Inconstant Sol. (The link for that Weston LP is from 2008 and still works!)
