welcome back, Martha!

...Just saw Mel Brooks on 'American Masters' PBS - & I picture the Chops' singer as him...
  Tue. 5/21/13 3:16pm Martha:

Thanks all - though I continue to be amazed at how fast my basic skill set erodes...

Martha! It's great to hear you live: I like not knowing what's next.
Any chance of having you back with the next schedule?
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 3:17pm tim from champaign:

Apparently in my friends PBS broadcast area the Mel Brooks show was pre-empted by Garrison Keiller. I could hear my friend yelling from 3 states away.

Great show, Martha.

The Mel Brooks PBS show was preceded by a "mature content" warning in my town.

@Martha: I thought so but their recent tour didn't stop in france. Well, that just means I need to start lobbying
Avatar    Tue. 5/21/13 4:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Irwin played a track by Klaatu you would swear was Muppet-related. Like Mel Brooks - prob. just a subconscious point of reference most of us just carry around...
  Tue. 5/21/13 4:15pm Martha:

Agreed w/rt Snapper; and maybe there is a God-Muppet-hippie connection we are missing?

Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 4:44pm northguineahills:

I wasn't stoned (something I kept in my freezer), but I do recall channel surfing and landing on Sesame Street early in the morning when I was a freshman in college.
Avatar    Tue. 5/21/13 4:47pm Parq:

I remember watching the original Sesame Street episodes with I was in HS. I understand that CTW is now obliged to put warnings on DVDs of those shows that they are for adults only, because they show awful things like grown-ups smoking and kids eating junk food. Sigh.
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 4:48pm braveness23:

B23 here! What is this ruckus I am listing to?
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 4:51pm Andrew Waterloo:

@Parq, I own both DVDs and I'd say the warnings are more to do with the hostile behaviour, the name calling, and things like kids going home with their teachers.
Avatar    Tue. 5/21/13 5:01pm Carmichael:

B23, Martha is about to release THE KRAKEN!
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:01pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

re:sesame street -- I don't have the stomach to see what it is today (most certainly modernized, etc) but that cartoon psychedelic pinball machine that counted to 12 destroyed my mind forever...
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:02pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

circa 1972 or whenever it was...
Avatar    Tue. 5/21/13 5:03pm Carmichael:

Reverend, was that Schoolhouse Rock your were thinking of?? Peter Max looking graphics, with numbers morphing all over and hip soul chicks singing "1-2-3 four five, 6-7-8 nine ten, 11 TWELVE!"
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:06pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

very school-of Peter Max, but it ran in Sesame Street. I believe these were the days before Grover morphed into SuperGrover. We were such charmed young'uns.
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:07pm Andrew Waterloo:

The Pinball machine and the Ladybugs picnic. I believe it's the Pointer Sisters on the vocals for the Pinball machine. There's a Youtube video that compiles every scene.

Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:08pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Ladybugs Picnic was a gas.
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:08pm Andrew Waterloo:

I don't find the new Sesame Street that much different. It's a little more directed toward preschoolers, but they're also still willing to take on some tough topics like Big Bird losing his nest in a hurricane.
Avatar    Tue. 5/21/13 5:11pm Carmichael:

Thanks for the link, BP. That is exactly as I remember it. Druid, you still have some grey cells. Congratulations!
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:12pm Mike East:

Sesame Street got more Elmo-centric in recent years, and that annoyed me...also seemed to be trying to sell more toys and sesame street related products.
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:13pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

I guess it's nice that the show takes on modern "hard times" stuff but it's a bit disappointing.

I was told they made the hairy elephant freak (snuffleupagus, or whatever) visible to humans because they were concerned about kids having the courage to tell people if they've been abused (he was big-bird's invisible friend at first) -- and cookie monster mellowed-out his binge lifestyle due to "childhood obesity" or whatever. Sad.
  Tue. 5/21/13 5:16pm Martha:

Wow - am feeling as though I really missed out - tho' I was def. around for that earlier Sesame Street - I think my parents objected to it's being too didactic, not to, uh, ?threatening/hostile?
Avatar    Tue. 5/21/13 5:17pm Carmichael:

My parents used it as a babysitting/calming device.
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:17pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Sesame Street & Electric Company were hot jams in my day. I remember being totally creeped & put off by Mr. Rogers....and his "neighborhood..."
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:18pm Andrew Waterloo:

it was Friendly Giant that terrified me
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:19pm Andrew Waterloo:

I remember the warm feeling of relief when he starting putting out the furniture knowing it was almost over.
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:19pm northguineahills:

I think the Elmocentricity happened shortly after Jim Henson died.
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:19pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

and of course LIDSVILLE was a total game-changer.
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:22pm Mike East:

@ngh - after that whole tickle me elmo craze, it got outta hand. I don't know if you've watched, but the "Elmo's World" segment takes up about 15 minutes...and its pretty uncreative by their old standards, imo. But yes, you're right. Jim Henson's death definitely had an impact on the whole enterprise.
Avatar    Tue. 5/21/13 5:22pm Cecile:

I always got a weird vibe from those Elmo/Frugal Gourmet PBS fundraisers. In retrospect, my gut was right.
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:22pm Andrew Waterloo:

I am a fan of the old British show The Klangers
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:24pm Andrew Waterloo:

watching Dora the Explorer quickly turned into the spot the reused scene game.
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:24pm Andrew Waterloo:

oops.. Clangers
  Tue. 5/21/13 5:25pm Martha:

I thought Mr. Rogers was v. boring - it took him so long to do the shoes and cardigan drill at the beginning and the end of the show - and he always sang the same thing!
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:25pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Thank Cthulhu I was too old & out of the Sesame Street scene by the time Elmo hatched. I would have probably grown up to kill everyone.
Avatar    Tue. 5/21/13 5:26pm Cecile:

I was more into the Friendly Giant.
Avatar    Tue. 5/21/13 5:28pm Carmichael:

Christopher Guest does a great spoof of Mr. Rogers on the National Lampoon album That's Not Funny, That's Sick. He interviews a hungover rock star, and later gets the crap beaten out him by the dads in the neighborhood, who think he's a perv.
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:29pm Andrew Waterloo:

I'm glad I just didn't have access to the new Sesame Street and my daughter was more than happy with things like Backyardigans, Peep, Tiny Planets, old Thomas the Train and Chapi Chapo.
Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:38pm Mike East:

I like the Backyardigans. Much better than those damn Wonderpets.

I pretty much never glanced often at Sesame Street by the time I was 12 as my brothers were 5 years my junior, so, I missed out on the Elmoization.
Avatar    Tue. 5/21/13 5:44pm Cecile:

I saw it when I was 8, I was a little old for it, but it was fun as was the Electric Company.
Avatar    Tue. 5/21/13 5:46pm Cecile:

It's worth your while downloading or finding Roosevelt Franklin Sings! The great Gordon Robinson wrote the lyrics and Joe Raposo the music. It's got the best song about not walking in traffic ever.

Avatar Tue. 5/21/13 5:52pm still b/p:

The comments for this show started with Mel Brooks references. and his voice was in Electric Company animations, including the one that came to a satisfyingly profound end with, I think, the line, "Would someone tell Mr. Smith his hat is in the onion dip."
Avatar    Tue. 5/21/13 5:57pm Cecile:

I found it as a free DL, and also it is part of a Sesame Street 60s/70s boxed CD set.
