Amanda, you're always number one.
Avatar Wed. 5/22/13 12:09pm Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of Buddhist restraint—no cicada sightings in Pittsburgh. I hear the NYC/NJ invasion has begun. (I'm lookin' at you, Staten Island.)
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 12:10pm Uncle Michael:

Cicadas make me miss our old dog Buster. He assured us they were the yummiest thing EVER.
Avatar Wed. 5/22/13 12:10pm fleep:

Buddhist restraint sounds like some sort of Zen handcuffs.
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 12:11pm Lizardner Dave:

I haven't seen or heard any on Staten Island but my part of the East Shore got a nice dose of seawater and sewage backup from Sandy so I imagine that cut down the population in my neighborhood.

I bet that cicadas to a dog are like hard-shell tacos or something similarly yummy.

Shoutout (typeout) to the Golden Cicada bar here in Jersey City. Maybe they'll have a festival?

Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 12:21pm pacific standard simon:

I experienced the Kansas cicada invasion of 1980 -- if you forgot to take the box fan out of the window when it was off, the bugs would get trapped in your room and fly around every so often, screeching like Diamanda Galas.

The Golden Cicada may be some kind of mating vessel for the little buggers.

PS Simon, that sounds like a pretty fun job anyway. If there was only some way to listen to FMU at the same time it would be great work for that...

Avatar Wed. 5/22/13 1:13pm Doug Schulkind:

I wasn't a drop-out, I just took 30 years off between my junior and senior year. (True story.)
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:15pm Stanley:

Nice one Doug...I wish I could have 30 years off.

30 years and counting here.

I'm totally playing my favorite Bobby Sherman song...soon.

Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:29pm Van in DC:

Brian in UK @ 12:56 - was that a reference to Harps Of Fuchsia Kalmia by chance...? I've thought they are awesome ever since hearing Doug play them before.
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:31pm Stanley:

@Van - I dunno, Brian can be pretty cryptic
Avatar Wed. 5/22/13 1:33pm Doug Schulkind:

I loved Artisanal Popsicle's early records. Before they sold out.
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:34pm Rich in Washington:

I am scared to buy anything edible from someone with a big, waxy hipster moustache, artisanal or not.
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:35pm Uncle Michael:

Wait...they're sold out of posicles? But...I heard bells...grrr

Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:37pm Amanda:

@Rich, I am of a similar mind, but the TMBG told me that he wasn't such a hipster after all; he was being true to himself.
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:40pm pacific standard simon:

Anyone ever hear Alex perform this song post-Box Tops?
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:41pm Rich in Washington:

@Amanada: It's hard to tell the difference in Portland OR but TMBGs is a pretty good indicator of genuine coolness.
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:43pm Amanda:

I hear that! And I hasten to add that it's possible to be hip and cool at the same time, though I myself have never mastered that combo.
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:44pm Amanda:

For me it's like patting your head and rubbing your belly at the same time.
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:45pm pacific standard simon:

You can ring my Bell.
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:46pm Uncle Michael:

Hip is pretty uncool, if you ask me.
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:46pm ndbob:

I like it when the cicadas are around.. none anywhere near here - I was living in Maryland when Brood X was around in 2004
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:46pm Stanley:

@Amanda - I get ya but being unhip and cool is actually the real cool.
Avatar Wed. 5/22/13 1:47pm Doug Schulkind:

Did Ray just say "cicadas"?
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:47pm Parq:

On the subject of being cool and hip, this here is pretty much my biography:

Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:48pm pacific standard simon:

I've always settled for "quirky".
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:48pm Uncle Michael:

Alan O'Day has moved on. He's finally going to meet his Undercover Angel.
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:49pm Brian in UK:

@Van it was more Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast. The 77th Earls daughter was called Fuschia. In fact Sting liked the books so much that he called his daughter by that name.
Avatar Wed. 5/22/13 1:49pm northguineahills:

Got here just in time for the Box Tops!
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:51pm Stanley:

...and I just planted a bunch in the window boxes, yesterday.
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:52pm ndbob:

I read Titus Groan long ago but never made it to the other Gormenghast books
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:53pm Brian in UK:

@Stanley, I am as straight as the day is long, guv. If I was Coptic I would be living in Egypt. Oh Mummy where art thou.
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:54pm Brian in UK:

@ndbob The BBC did a wonderful adaptation a year or two ago. Wonder if UbuWeb has it.
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:54pm Amanda:

Sad about Alan O'Day, he was pretty young. At least he seemed so when I saw him play keyboards at the Ponderosa Stomp a couple of years ago. (Not for himself, though they let him sing a couple of bars of "Undercover Angel."
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:56pm ndbob:

excellent show Amanda!
Avatar    Wed. 5/22/13 1:56pm Brian in UK:

Good luck Simon this afternoon.
