I don't know what to say after last week's show. That's the only entire show that I've favorited.

Welcome, RR, Fleep, UM, DD
  Sun. 5/19/13 9:09pm trsh:

Hey Dave. Yours is a good show to listen to and get stuff done. I think it's the fine instrumentals/absence of lyrics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 5/19/13 9:09pm pacific standard simon:

Nice, fleep!
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 9:09pm fleep:

Should be repackaged as a premium for next year.

(wonders if Dave's show is ever "skim")
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 9:11pm Dave Mandl:

Thanks, folks. Much appreciated. The response has been really heart-warming.
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 9:12pm Dave Mandl:

And of course, thanks to Evan and Irwin, without whom etc.
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 9:12pm Dave Mandl:

@Fleep: Good idea. Putting together Marathon premiums is not easy.
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 9:15pm Dave Mandl:

@trsh: Gracias. The no-vocals thing isn't conscious. It dawned on me one day that I play very little music with vocals. That just happens somehow. And I don't really plan the shows in advance, so whatever I grab in the hours before my show, that's what I play.
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 9:18pm Dave Mandl:

@Fleep: Thanks for the link. I think Fluid Radio is excellent.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/19/13 9:26pm Folsom:

Last week's show was very good. I have a couple of friends that are drummers, and they both liked the show.

From Verona, NJ, but temp in Wisconsin. What is playing on i-Tunes? It's not the same as live stream here (which is also avail on Winamp.) I;Tunes is playing Thelma Baxter.

Love the Drake.
  Sun. 5/19/13 9:42pm Al:

It could be ichiban. I moved to Verona way back when Vin Scelsa used to talk about te Claremont Diner. I lived in the Bronx. I bought a house in Verona, went to the Claremont with my wife when we closed. It burned down shortly after. And then again. 36 years later I still live in Verona (great little town; half way between NYC and Wisconsin I tell my wife) and listen to Scelsa on FUV Sat nights!

Nick Drake - like the European Robert Johnson - a kind of amazing ghost...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 5/19/13 9:42pm Uncle Michael:

A friend of mine says Nick Drake OD'd on pot. I think he's just being facetious.
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 9:43pm Dave Mandl:

@beavoux: Pink Moon is one of the most beautiful records ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/19/13 9:43pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Nick Drake fatally OD'd on antidepressants (as they existed in the early 70's).
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 9:44pm Dave Mandl:

RR is right. They never knew for sure whether it was suicide or an accident.

Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 9:47pm beavoux:

He had terrible stage fright and did few shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/19/13 9:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- This is a Classic bit of writing about Drake by Ian MacDonald, who also died @ his own hand :

I need to get myself a VCS 3.
  Sun. 5/19/13 9:54pm Al:

Dave, I vjust cut and pasted the live stream link from the website into the i-Tunes stream and now it's playing the live stream! About 3 seconds after the Winamp stream.
  Sun. 5/19/13 9:54pm trsh:

A Skin Too Few is a pretty fine documentary on Drake.
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 9:55pm Dave Mandl:

@trsh: Ah, I've never seen that. I need to ASAP.
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 9:55pm Dave Mandl:

Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 9:55pm beavoux:

Thanks for the link rev rabbit
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 9:58pm Dave Mandl:

@DD: At one time I bet you could get a VCS3 cheap. Now they're probably big bucks because everyone wants old analog synthesizers.
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 9:58pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Rather than Pink Floyd, I prefer to think of the VCS3 as the lovely noisemaker between the tunes in Hawkwind's SPACE RITUAL gig release. But hey. An adorable little machine...
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 9:59pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

And you can get 'em made custom, legit, nowadays. But it might take a bunch of years to get it in hand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Sun. 5/19/13 9:59pm steve:

is the VCS3 the synth with the Battleship style peg board?

HAH!! Correctly guessed Jackie Gleason.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/19/13 10:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- whereas for some of us, that's exactly the appeal.

- Johnny & the Moondogs was one of the early Beatles monikers.

Swag For Life Member Sun. 5/19/13 11:27pm Ralphine:

I remember seeing Fripp somewhere in New York a long time ago. His performance consisted of walking on stage, fiddling with his Frippertronics machines, then leaving the stage to let them play, then fiddling with the machines some more, then leaving the stage, and so forth.

Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 11:37pm Dave Mandl:

No, it predates the archive. 1991, I think.
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 11:38pm Dave Mandl:

I have a cassette copy of it somewhere, but I've never had the nerve to listen to it. (I'm talking about me, not Fripp.)
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 11:39pm Dave Mandl:

Julie made a copy of it for herself last year, and she's going to be on AmEdeo's show in a few hours, so ask her about it.

A 22 year old cassette should probably be transferred, in the interest of History.

He sounds like a difficlult and intimidating, yet interesing interview from the ones I've read.

Julie interviewed Toyah by phone a couple of years ago, and wrote 1991 as year for the Mandl/Fripp/Toyah interview... Would be cool to upload it if revisiting one's old self were not so scary (I hate reading my old stuff :( )
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 11:42pm Dave Mandl:

Yup, that's right. She copied it to prepare for that interview.

I was trolling YouTube videos of people's accounts of meeting Hendrix - & there's Fripp's (audio). He sounds like a personable polite Englishman there - tho' I can well imagine he does not suffer fools.
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 11:46pm beavoux:

He doesn't like being approached by "fans" at shows.
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 11:47pm Dave Mandl:

I was terrified from the stories I'd heard, but he was charming and very funny.
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 11:48pm Dave Mandl:

I got a lift back to NY by the guy from the record company, with Fripp, Toyah, and Trey Gunn.

You mean Huggies?
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 11:52pm Dave Mandl:

You're not *that* young.
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 11:53pm Droll:

Last Fripp interview I saw was heartbreaking. He called making records nowadays a "joyless exercise in futility": www.ft.com...
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 11:53pm Dave Mandl:

Just kidding. I'll give you a hug on my way out.

Sounds like a VCS3 again.
Avatar Sun. 5/19/13 11:54pm Dave Mandl:

Very possible. This is from '74.

It was one of the first if not the first sequencer on the market.

Uncle Michael has the right approach to the music bed: hang a microphone out the window.

Bye now, next week.
