So glad to be live. Getting the show from the archives for the past few weeks has been a treat. But nothing substitutes for the live radio experience.

I hear ya, Chris! After years of searching, I have found no remedy for a Monday morning, so I just try to block it out with music.

MANIA!
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:05am doca:

it's disappointingly lucid about today's world problems, but it's also interestingly credible because of that. in the end, the ufos play a small role in his discourse. and i guess he's right about thinking humanity's place in an universe full of life.

Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:09am Liz Berg:

Good point, doca, we definitely need to be prepared! We are ready for Bob Dylan's death but not for the day of contact.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:10am Cecile:

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Nice try, Replacements.
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:11am Jeezy:

Nothing wrong with a simple nugget of pop, Cecile.
And like all songs on the EP, it's written by ailing former guitarist Slim Dunlap. They ain't exactly trying to do Let It Be again...
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:15am Jeezy:

Well, not every song on the EP is by Slim. There's a cover or two. The point is to help Slim after his stroke.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:15am Cecile:

Nothing is wrong, it's just boring.
I can appreciate the sentiment without buying into the whole thing.
And Let it Be doesn't hold up all that well.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:16am Cecile:

I used to be the hugest Replacements fan until I moved here. The more I think about it, the more I see the first three albums as a happy accident.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:17am Cecile:

I mean, good for Slim, but I'll just paypal him some money.
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:18am doca:

Cecile's making me unfavorite the Replacement's song...and I got all surprised that I did like one of their songs.
But I agree that event Let It Be doesn't hold up all that well...
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:19am doca:

*that even Let It Be...
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:19am Jeezy:

What?! Preposterous... Every album up until Pleased to Meet Me is basically a classic... Admittedly some are occasionally spotty but these are still great albums.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:19am Cecile:

don't unfavorite it because of me.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:20am Cecile:

I like Please to Meet Me - most of it.
Tim is a goof, and I bought Let it Be the day it came out. I can't even buy a $1 copy of their last one.
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:20am doca:

i'm kidding, Cecile, but it was funny because i decided to give it a try to the replacements.
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:21am Jeezy:

Anyhoo, it's an impossible debate. One can't argue what's good or bad, I think. I love a lot of those albums, maybe more tracks than entire albums. It is what it is. It's how it speaks to you and where you were in your life at that point.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:21am Cecile:

I would start with Hootenanny, and then decide if you want to go forwads or backwards.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:22am Cecile:

They spoke to me a great deal. I travelled out of town for shows. I bought things the day they came out. I was a one-woman cheering squad for them.
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:22am SeanG:

I still love Don't tell a soul, and All shook down --haahaha
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:24am Cecile:

I can still listen to Hootennany at the drop of a hat, and I think Pleased to Meet me is a great record.

But at this juncture, the one Replacements-orientated project I can get behind is Chris Mars's artwork.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:24am Cecile:

It's not like they are wanting for fans. Good on all of 'em.
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:25am Jeezy:

So then it was the live shows for you, Cecile? You don't sound like that type of Mats' fan with your assessment of their previous albums. I also followed them around. Hard to imagine if you don't love the albums...
I'm talking more about your thoughts on their past then their current incarnation.
  Mon. 5/13/13 10:26am Derek:

Great to hear Snapper getting a bit of renewed love
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:28am Chris from DC:

Yeah, great song.
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:28am Vivian:

My first intro to the Mats was Let It Be. I'm more into that period along with Ma Forgot to Take the Trash Out and Hootenanny. Their later stuff has some high and low points, just my two cents.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:29am Cheri Pi:

Gotta pick up this Snapper
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:31am Ike:

Cheri Pi@10:03, I haven't compared the pop-up and 128k streams closely. The sound quality of the 128k stream is probably marginally better on paper, but IDK if anyone can really tell the difference?
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:31am Jeezy:

Rebuffering stream?! I'm gonna rebuffer your lazy ass in a minute, iTunes!
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:32am Cecile:

Jeezy, what it is for me that if I have to deal with talented egomaniacs I'd rather be jerked around by Mark E. Smith at this juncture than Paul Westerberg. Smith makes no pretense of pleasing anyone but himself. Westerberg has made a career of "lovable curmudgeon" so he can kind of have it both ways.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:33am Cecile:

And people eat it up here.
Which is fine, but if I have my druthers, I'll just slap on some Cows and be down with it.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:33am Cheri Pi:

Thanks Ike, that's pretty much what I thought too.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:33am Cecile:

well, down with it, and done with it.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:36am Whosondephone:

YEAHH BABBY!!!
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:36am Jennique:

OooOooo - this song is a now a "favorite" for me. More Moog Mondays!
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:40am Jeezy:

Fair enough, Cecile.
I was unaware of all that, I just listen to the records!
I'm still reeling from the fact that you're female...
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:40am Cecile:

I thnik the next time they just play a new Mats song, I'll change the channel. It's not nice to bogue people's highs.

I hear that Conny Plank kept a bungalow in Houghton where he could fish all day & jam all night with local U.P. Krautsters
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:49am Cecile:

He and Bob Seger used to show up in the local bars, reeking of smoked fish and Faust.
  Mon. 5/13/13 10:50am BenG:

Flash Player "aka" pop up vs. MP3? For me hands down MP3. With the MP3 on the desktop I use VLC, or you if want Winamp, Windows Media Player, what-have-you. They have built in equilization and filters to tweak the sound to your ears. It come out nice. To me ears the Flashplayer brings the stream, but not as much music (aka dynamic range).
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:52am braveness23:

B23 here~!
  Mon. 5/13/13 10:53am Xavi:

listening through XiiaLive. Don't know how others compare but I prefer it over the WinAmp app.
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:53am Andrew Waterloo:

I definitely prefer playing mp3 through Foobar. Mainly because it's it sits in the background and I don't accidently shut it off when I recklessly close all my browser windows.
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:54am Andrew Waterloo:

I also have a playlist setup that has all the WFMU streams.
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:55am Jeezy:

Foobar?
  Mon. 5/13/13 10:55am Xavi:

I'm a noob with Android apps. Prefer WinAmp on my pc. XiiaLive has a history of songs even if I change stations so that's cool since I'm not scrobbling live radio
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:57am Vivian:

@ Cecile- Bob Seger as in Night Moves Bob Seger?
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 10:57am Jennique:

CaliforniYEAH! They are singing the thoughts in my head. Currently I have a Big Sur screensaver from my trip last summer. Bi-coastal conflicted. Put a star for that song so I can favorite it!
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:58am Cheri Pi:

Dieter recalled that Plank's letters tended to focus on his veritable fixation with the pickled eggs there, swearing he could find none as perfect-the earth over like those from the UP. Gong would pen "Angel Egg" as a tongue in cheek jab at Plank's obsession.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:58am KevinfromBayRidge:

All I know is that Pop-up is the only damned way I can listen at work. So I loooove it!!!
Sad to hear in Ken's last "State of the station" that Pop-up is only a "legacy" format now. Had been hoping it would expand to the GTDS & other streams. C'est la vie!
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 10:59am Cheri Pi:

the mat's EP is great. Paul's singing is stellar, and they are a true rarity still to this day, regardless of the band make-up, my two cents..
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 11:06am Ike:

Kevin, also I guess Ken meant FLASH is a legacy player and should be replaced by HTML5 pop-ups. That's what most other stations are moving to. But most of us wouldn't know the difference even if they danced around naked with their code exposed for all to see, digital ones and zeros dangling everywhere....
  Mon. 5/13/13 11:07am KP:

Besides lack if avatar and icon goodies, I don't like the application version of the list because of the duplicate posting. But I havent been able to use iPhone safari version since yesterday

Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 11:11am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Not sure if it's been said already, but: My experience with the iPhone app is that the double-posting is at least partly due to the white-on-white progress wheel, when you hit POST COMMENT... it's very subtle. Easy to punch it again while it's pausing & grinding its gears.

Once I noticed the progress wheel (extremely faint), I've had no issues with comments...

Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 11:36am Mike East:

I was impressed that I was able to limit my booze intake this weekend to the amount just under how much gives me a hangover.
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 11:39am Jeezy:

What's your secret, Mike? Ever since a hipster bar opened under my apt here in Williamsburg it has been a major challenge for me. They're always dragging me in for Jagerbombs when I'm on the way home to a sensible early night.
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 11:41am Mike East:

honestly, the secret is, the previous weekend, I drank too much...and it really sucked. I made a mental note of it.
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 11:42am Jeezy:

Unfortunately that won't work for me.. My short term memory is shot. Too much drankin' ...
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 11:47am KevinfromBayRidge:

Tempuh-rance, one & all!
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 11:49am still b/p:

With many of the nice craft beers these days being 7% and 9% and more, my poor widdle system has to be vewy cautious.
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 11:51am Mike East:

It helps when you have a spouse there reminding you of what happened the last time.
  Mon. 5/13/13 11:51am mb:

Wow! You should play that Moustache song again, it knocked me over!
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 11:51am Jeezy:

I blatantly ask NY bartenders to make it not too strong. Yes, I look like a pussy but I can still function the next day... And hopefully that evening if necessary!
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 11:51am Cecile:

I stick to stut around 4%. That super-revved up stuff is like drinking too much wine - that's a bad hangover.
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 11:52am Jeezy:

This "spouse" is what often drives me to the drank in the first place.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 11:53am KevinfromBayRidge:

It's all'bout the ABV!
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 11:53am Chris from DC:

Yeah, that 7% to 10% range is where I've been living lately.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 11:53am Carmichael:

I do research before I order my ales these days. Accidentally drank some high-octane once, and learned my lesson.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 11:54am Cecile:

this is a really great Guns 'n' Roses song.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 11:54am KevinfromBayRidge:

That's where I loove it too!
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 11:55am Cecile:

Yeah, those 12% ones will get you on the floor.
It's another thing when I drink hard liquor - I go in there knowing what will happen. But a lot of those boozy beers are really smooth and addictive
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 11:55am Ike:

Kevin, here's the GTD Radio pop-up: wfmu.org...
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 11:56am Cecile:

mb, ITA. and it's such a weird catchphrase: "moustache in your face!"
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 11:56am Jeezy:

I know it's obvious... but I never realized what an Iggy wannabe Mark Arm is until I saw them at Music Hall Saturday. I just didn't realize to what extent. Mudhoney was excellent, nonetheless...
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 11:56am Cecile:

Blind Shake!
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 11:57am KevinfromBayRidge:

Not happy with bars in my hood where I ask about ABV and get blank stares.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 11:57am Carmichael:

Pop-ups are all on the home page now. Look by Liz's playlist and click the "more" button.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 11:57am Cecile:

These guys are some of the finest the Twin Cities have to offer.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 11:57am Carmichael:

Sorry, "show all channels" button.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 11:58am Cheri Pi:

Agreed C-!
Avatar Mon. 5/13/13 11:59am still b/p:

They're now pouring some of the tasty ones in smaller-than-pint, sometimes-almost-dainty servings at full price, which is insane for the budget but prudent for the pacing and well-being.
Avatar    Mon. 5/13/13 11:59am Cecile:

I liked it. It wasn't great Stooges, but it was a good hard rock song.
