You're playing my song!
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:10am Ken From Hyde Park:

Two things off the bat.... I saw in a newsstand tabloid today that Cher is seeing Gregg Allman again and I notice that some insurance company has an Allman Brothers song on a TV commercial.
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:11am Droll:

Ken, Damn straight!
  Sun. 5/5/13 12:11am Chop Scott:

OUCH! My high school band mates always wanted to play this song endlessly--then to go into Cream Crossroads. Yes, I grew up in the Mid-West! Cheers JOE!
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:13am Joe McG:

I kinda feel like playing this over and over. How many times can you take it?

Sun. 5/5/13 12:14am Holly in NC:

Joe, do you have the mega Duane box (Skydog), & if so, your thoughts?
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:15am Parq:

Did you consider doing this with the live version?
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:15am KP:

You know there's a longer version out there somewhere.
  Sun. 5/5/13 12:16am Chop Scott:

I always had more fun way back then with The James Gang.
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:16am Droll:

Joe, Can you spin this backwards?
There's also a smokin' version of FZ's band doing this with Bobby Martin singing.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:16am Ken From Hyde Park:

The commercial is for motorcycle insurance. Members of The Allman Brothers band died in motorcycle accidents. Have these advertisers no shame? Short memories, maybe.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:17am Joe McG:

Ken, that's hilarious kind of.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:18am Mary Wing:

Is this an early Mother's Day show, Joe? ;-P
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:18am G:

If you put this track on repeat, fairly soon WFMU and 104.3 will be playing the exact same song at the same moment, and the very universe will be cloven asunder.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:18am Joe McG:

OK, you guys asked for it.

     Sun. 5/5/13 12:19am 12539:

Joe, you don't have enough time to play this more times than I heard it growing up. I think I've built up immunity.
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:19am Droll:

Bands have alcohol sponsors all the time, but alcohol has killed plenty o'rockers. Why not travel insurance for Buddy Holly?
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:20am Dr. Goot:

Nice
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:20am fleep:

Different whip, same post.

Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:22am G:

But on the evening's playlist, what could be post-Whipping Post?
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:22am Joe McG:

Wow, two requests for Frank Zappa. I might have to go look for it. BTW, G and fleep, you both just made me laugh.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:22am Ken From Hyde Park:

Dial up Station Manager Ken to get advice on how to slow down, speed up, or otherwise mess with songs.
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:22am Droll:

I think you need a playlist disclaimer that no Allmans have died.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:23am Joe McG:

Droll, I think you have a good point there! NO ALLMAN BROTHERS HAVE DIED TO MY KNOWLEDGE.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:23am Joe McG:

Incidentally, this version of "WP" is only 23 minutes long.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:24am Ken From Hyde Park:

There ought to be a mash-up of Whipping Post and Devo's Whip It out there.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:24am KP:

Molly Hatchet's cover of "Dreams."
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:25am Joe McG:

@Ken: That's scary, I was wondering if I should follow this up with some DEVO. But I think G is right, "WP" is not to be followed.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:26am Joe McG:

@Holly: Sorry I missed you up there! No, I don't have it! Many mountain jams, I imagine! @Chop Scott: Marching band version! Must find!
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:26am KP:

Except by another one.
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:26am G:

I thought this concert was at Merriweather Whipping Post Pavilion? Or was that the Animal Collective CD?
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:28am Ken From Hyde Park:

Joe, let us know when it's time to raise our lighters up over our heads. (* Checks the kitchen drawer for a lighter. *)
  Sun. 5/5/13 12:28am Chop Scott:

I would suggest "Free Bird", or "Tuesday's Gone". I'm serious.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:30am Joe McG:

Chop Scott, that is an excellent idea.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:30am KP:

Uh oh this the live one. The Jersey City villagers are lighting torches as we speak

Wow, this whipping post is getting a bit meandering....let's whip it up, boys!
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:31am KP:

This has a long solo solo
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:31am G:

Sometimes I feel
Sometimes I feel like I been
Tied to the whipping solo
Tied to the whipping solo
Tied to the whipping solo
Good lord I feel like Im dyyyyin...
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:31am Parq:

Well, it was the end of the set.
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:32am Droll:

When I first uploaded this album cover as an avatar a few months ago I was sure I couldn't get more than 2 uses out of it...
I presume this version is *only* 23 minutes long because that's all an album side will hold. The free-jazz-space-jam probably covered nights 5-9 of a month long residency.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:33am Ken From Hyde Park:

This is WFMU. Up next....Björk!
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:34am Joe McG:

The problem with watching the LP is that it's hard to tell how far along you are. We're getting close to two-thirds of the way, but boy oh boy....
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:35am KP:

I think this is where Duane plays Strangers in the Night with one hand while doing a somersault.
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:36am G:

For the first time in recorded history, Joe's plsylist will be shorter than Bryce's.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:36am Joe McG:

@G: Hey, all I need is about 5 more half-hour versions and Bryce is so in trouble.
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:37am Droll:

Please say when it gets to the end you hit the reverse switch and we get another 23 minutes in reverse! Seriously, this will sound fantastic backwards!
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:37am Parq:

Okay, I admit it, I still love that transition out of the solo.
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:37am G:

Now just pop on a 35 minute bootleg of Yes doing Ritual with the extra extended bass sol.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:37am Joe McG:

I really need to do my high school heavies show one of these days.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:39am Joe McG:

@Droll: Great idea, but unfortunately I put the LP on TT1, which is not the backwards one. TT3 is, and half of the time, one channel pops out, so I rarely use it. I'll leave the stunt turntabling to Mary Wing, every Wednesday night/Thursday morning!
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:40am Ken From Hyde Park:

There are some good riffs on In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed, if I recall.
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:40am Droll:

G, Chris always takes the long bass solo so the other Yes bandmembers can get some prog-fan booty during the break. They nned the first 25 minutes to look for a girl.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:40am Joe McG:

The only bad thing about this version is that there isn't a long drum solo.
  Sun. 5/5/13 12:40am Chop Scott:

The Southern extended jam of Whipping Post directly leads towards the soup fully condensed -not to be so obvious, but c'mon--FREE BIRD. That is the song I wanna hear..
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:41am G:

Right after this, the members of ABB joined Noodlers Anonymous
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:41am KP:

I thought I saw Mary Wing around somewhere.
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:42am G:

@Droll: Huh, I thought it was so Rick had time to finish his chicken tikka masala and hit the loo for a quick dump
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:42am Parq:

Ken from HP. I have felt for 40 year that "Liz Reed" would make a good number for a jazz combo, with alto sax, piano and tenor sax standing in for the originals.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:42am KP:

Not Free bird but maybe Show Me the Way/Free Bird.
  Sun. 5/5/13 12:42am Chop Scott:

JOE--I am so sorry...
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:43am Parq:

THA'K YEW, G'NIGHT!!"
Sun. 5/5/13 12:43am Holly in NC:

Still voting for Simple Man.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:43am KP:

Even I can't take Mountain Jam.
  Sun. 5/5/13 12:44am Chop Scott:

It is a great song, great recording. Thanks!
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:44am G:

[houselights go up]

Ladies and gentlemen, Allmanns Has Left the Building!!!
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:45am Joe McG:

@Chop Scott: No, don't be! Great idea! @Holly: Hmm...maybe I'll play that, too! @G: The audience members are stumbling to the exits, drained but satisfied.
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:46am G:

This track is only listed as 7:32. PIKERS.
  Sun. 5/5/13 12:47am Chop Scott:

That's a Mellotron in this song!!
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:47am G:

Melltron? Pretty effete for the Gimme Three Steps boys.
Sun. 5/5/13 12:48am Holly in NC:

Have to say this is crazy background music for reading Terminal Boredom archives (my current activity, no decent books at my current location)
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:49am Ken From Hyde Park:

Some Molly Hatchet would be good for nexties.
Sun. 5/5/13 12:50am Lonely Planet Boy:

Ed King was 3rd guitarist in this version of Skynyrd. He was also in Strawberry Alarm Clock. Odd combo.

Incense and Whippingposts
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:51am Droll:

Strictly speaking, it's a Chamberlain. The version of the instrument safe for non-prog rockers. I never realized how enormous this arrangement is: 3-4 guitars, bass, drums, organ, Chamberlain...
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:51am G:

Three songs, 50 minutes
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:53am KP:

Ok my confession: Saw Allmans four times. Twice w/ Duane, once w/ berry after Duane, then the brothers & sisters version minus both. The I saw Mott the Hoople.
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:54am Droll:

I have that floatie pen!

For single file: James Brown songs with parts one and two, Dramatics In The Rain, etc. Remember when the jukebox people didn't want to place the Dramatics song in their machines b/c it was 6 or 7 minutes and they would lose some income?
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 12:59am G:

Someone slayed the Slayer dude.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 12:59am Parq:

Hey, I remember Nitzinger! She's the drummer, Joe.
Sun. 5/5/13 12:59am Holly in NC:

So no Slayer? ;-)
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 1:00am Parq:

They actually sort of kicked off my life long fondness for bands with girl drummers. Looking at you, Gories.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 1:00am Joe McG:

@G: Oh yeah, I knew somebody died! The Slayer dude. Well, that's not my area. Diane will do something next week, I'm sure!

It's surprising there aren't more cock fight songs.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 1:04am Matt from Springfield:

@G: Wow, it is! And why the hell not!! :)

Louisiana, there and Oklahoma I thought were the only two states that allow cockfighting. Peculiar to the "south central" U.S.!
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 1:04am Droll:

G, A 6-minute 45 is going to sound awful and wouldn't play without skipping in a jukebox with a 3-year old needle.

The Slayer guy guitarist from complications of lifestyle. You almost never see that anymore.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 1:05am Joe McG:

@fleep: I agree, we need more cockfight songs.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 1:05am Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: The Southern Hard Rock Strategy!
@fleep: This stuff sounds up Clay Pigeon's alley--he could look through obscure early 70s rock band LPs from OK and LA, I'm sure he could find some!
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 1:07am Droll:

I'm trying to imagine a rap, or electro-dance cockfight song... Nope. Er, I mean great open opportunity for the right band.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 1:07am Matt from Springfield:

Oh man, too bad I'm alone here, this soundtrack is just begging to accompany a bar brawl! I may have to swing a chair at my houseplant soon!! ;)

Hey KP. The Empire (previously The Jaxx) is the nightclub right up the street from the house where I grew up. Black Oak Arkansas unbelievably horrible. There was nobody left, like six people with their legs over chairs in front of them. They did whole set, drum solo, throwing sticks into "crowd.' yeesh.

@12539: I don't think so....but maybe?
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 1:38am Matt from Springfield:

This is a fun sound from Bonnie Hayes!
  Sun. 5/5/13 1:39am hal:

Wow, this Bonnie Hayes song slays. Good looks, Joe
Sun. 5/5/13 1:39am Lonely Planet Boy:

Just added Bonnie Hayes to my Rhapsody playlist. Soon to go to iTunes to purchase.

Two points for whoever knows who this is. I played them last week for the first time.

Simon & Garfunkel.

Is this the Simon & Garfunkel "Tom and Jerry"?!!
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 1:40am Joe McG:

@Matt: Two points for Matt from Springfield!
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 1:40am Matt from Springfield:

Was this a hard 45 to find?
Sun. 5/5/13 1:41am Lonely Planet Boy:

Simon & Garfunkel. You're quick Matt!
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 1:41am Joe McG:

Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 1:41am b:

I'll split the points with Matt anytime.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 1:42am Joe McG:

@Matt: Not really, but it was at the bottom of a big stack of wrecked records. It's not in great shape, either, but it's cute to have.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 1:43am Matt from Springfield:

The 33 startup amused me :) But I've known for a while about their teenage collab of that name, never heard how they sounded!

But very generous of you to split, b! We'll take a point each, and I'll let LPB borrow mine next weekend! :)
Sun. 5/5/13 1:46am Lonely Planet Boy:

Thanks, Matt.
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 1:47am b:

What a great title by Latimore!
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 1:47am Matt from Springfield:

Catchy disco, Wiki actually has an article on that one: "Frank Farian's assistant Hans-Jörg Mayer (aka Reyam) had discovered a popular Tunisian folkloric song, "Sidi Mansour" while on holiday, and rewrote the song into a disco track."
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 1:48am G:

clavinet alert.
Sun. 5/5/13 1:48am Holly in NC:

Super Latimore
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 1:49am Matt from Springfield:

@B: Mos def! Though rednecks have certainly added some benefit to soul bands over the years.
@LPB: I'm having my point framed, it will look real nice!
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 1:49am b:

Diggin the clavinet! Was just listening to Godley & Creme using it on "L" today.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 1:50am Matt from Springfield:

I think we're due for a clavinet revival. The ball is in your court, bands!

Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 1:56am b:

JANE! Good one, for a much-maligned group past their prime.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 1:56am Matt from Springfield:

Whoa, I like this one! Didn't know it was the Starship!
@G: Was that the exact same one? I've noticed them reusing backing tracks in those days.
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 1:56am G:

They were past their prime, past their second, and probably past their third :)
Sun. 5/5/13 1:57am Lonely Planet Boy:

best Clavinet: Stevie's "Superstition" and whatever is on Elton's "Capt. Fantastic" LP.
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 1:57am G:

@Matt: Not the exact same, but pretty close in quite a few spots

@LPB: Outta Space...
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 1:58am KP:

Just saw great Jefferson Airplane clip of them playing on a rooftop in NYC, early morning. Godard.
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 1:58am Droll:

Laugh all you want, this is the best sounding 45 of them all. A good mastering always stands out even on a worn disc.

Does the station have Mother's Finest? That's some fine country-fried rock.
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 1:59am b:

I'll take Mickey Thomas's Starship over the baloney Marty Balin was putting out solo at the same time.
Sun. 5/5/13 2:00am Lonely Planet Boy:

G:, you're absolutely right. Which I have on an A&M 45! Shoulda thought of that one.
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 2:02am G:

Loved that tune in the first half of 72, LPB. Had to listen to radio Luxembourg from my spot in the UK to hear it, till I ordered the 45 -- it wasn't on the UK charts or radio....
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 2:02am b:

Wow. Rance Allen can WAIL.
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 2:04am b:

And that will be good enough to send me off to bed for church in the morning. Another great half-hour of 45s Joe!
Avatar Sun. 5/5/13 2:05am Sean D. Daily:

What's this playing behind you, Joe?
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 2:06am Julie:

Zevon on piano with HLGs.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 2:09am Matt from Springfield:

Hi Julie!
Is "Jane" up your alley, or is that era of Starship too late for your interest?
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 2:09am Ken From Hyde Park:

Mission accomplished...I spotted a shooting star right at the end of Jane. I just now see that was by Jefferson Starship. That's a good omen, right?
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 2:10am Matt from Springfield:

Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 2:14am Matt from Springfield:

NOOOO! No reggae Snoop! Marianne preferred!

@KP: I was just saying g'night to b! :)
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 2:15am Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: It was very familiar to me, you've probably heard it before but didn't recognize without hearing it. Late 70s, but good solid rock.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 2:15am KP:

Oh good. i felt so alone, as Johnny Thunders put it.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 2:16am Joe McG:

This band is so good, I gotta remember to give that cd a listen. Once again they remind me of Danielle Dax
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 2:28am KP:

Yeah it has Finlandia in it.
Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 2:29am Matt from Springfield:

Finlandia "Finnish" coffee -- sounds like the next big thing! :)

Stereolab reminds i saw the Tim Buckley/Jeff Buckley movie this week. It wasnut much of a movie but it got to me. I was told on Irene's board FMU helped out in making of it somewhat.

Avatar    Sun. 5/5/13 2:39am Matt from Springfield:

Hooray Tom Jones, a pleasant surprise from his usual! Is the new album mainly low key, ballads like that?
