i read that garth hudson would charge the members of the band something like 10$ a week each for music lessons. something to do with musician's union rules, if i remember rightly.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/26/13 9:05am Brian in UK:

@glenn I remember seeing The Band at the Albert Hall and he (Garth) wandered on stage like he came in off the streets playing a sax. Cool as a cucumber. What a band.
Avatar Fri. 4/26/13 9:05am glenn:

actually, his parent's rules. "Fearing that his parents would think he was squandering his years of music education by playing in a rock and roll band, Hudson joined the band on the condition he be given the title "music consultant" and that his bandmates each pay him $10 a week for music lessons, allowing him to mollify his family's fears that his education had gone to waste. Revealing a bit of the thinking behind his early fears, in The Last Waltz Hudson told interviewer-director Martin Scorsese: "There is a view that jazz is 'evil' because it comes from evil people, but actually the greatest priests on 52nd Street and on the streets of New York City were the musicians. They were doing the greatest healing work. They knew how to punch through music that would cure and make people feel good."

Avatar Fri. 4/26/13 9:34am Rich in Washington:

@Alex. I had the same problem. I just loaded the url from Doug's email/Facebook posting and it worked.
I suspect URL's get outdated eventually, like a carton of milk.
Avatar Fri. 4/26/13 9:36am Doug Schulkind:

You have to reestablish the stream in iTunes using the same old link:

This was due to a server crash yesterday.

I recently found a great old Folkways record: Music Therapy with the Developmentally Handicapped. That and one called Voices of the Satellites, which is really peculiar.
Avatar Fri. 4/26/13 9:53am ndbob:

Drink Small (his real name) was born in 1933 in Bishopville (Lee County), SC. Known worldwide as "The Blues Doctor", he plays virtuoso blues guitar, two-fisted piano, and sings in an inimitable basso profundo voice.

Same with the next track, a private press gem from 1972 that is enjoying a well-deserved renaissance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/26/13 9:59am AndrewC.:

what will private press mean now, when everything is self published onto the web?

I'm on the fourth episode of the Sopranos (first season), I only saw a handful of episodes the first time around.
Avatar Fri. 4/26/13 10:05am listener james from westwood:

doug, if you want a good series of deep essays on "the sopranos" written during a rewatch (or possibly a 1st-time watch), check out todd vanderwerff's writeups on the onion's av club site. (here's the one on the pilot: alan sepinwall also discusses the series in his recent book about cable dramas in the 2000s.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 4/26/13 10:09am AndrewC.:

Right now, when I see private press, I'm assuming some crate digger has found a unknown gem in some dusty attic.
Avatar Fri. 4/26/13 10:11am listener james from westwood:

no sweat!
(for those outside the tri-state area, sepinwall was one of the newark star-ledger's tv writers, now indie iirc. excellent writer; if his sopranos writeups are still up anywhere, also worth chasing down if only b/c it was filmed in his stomping grounds. how he gets his writeups for "mad men" up so quickly i have no idea.)
Avatar Fri. 4/26/13 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

You know, Listener James, now that you mentioned Sepinwall's pedigree, I'm pretty sure I read his Soprano's pieces contemporaneously. Terrific stuff, if I recall.
Avatar Fri. 4/26/13 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

@trish, i think the rewriting part is part of the way ap releases news as it's updated. there ought to be some sort of identifier showing that it's a later revision, iirc.

....stones are heavy in hell, my friend....
  Fri. 4/26/13 10:35am hyde:

They should not only timestamp the revisions, they need to come clean on the changes and show the differences with 'diff'. Credibility drops to zero over time without these outside of a physical hardcopy.

These cajun accordions like the one you are showing are modern versions that are made with higher-quality materials and workmanship than the old original ones they are based on.
I have some old 2-row models, and I have had two of them restored by a guy who says that it is kind of nuts to restore them.
