as a kid, i sang the bridge of "jet" this way:

darth va-der, flies a cus-tom tie fighter
darth va-der, flies a cus-tom tie fighter
darth va-der—darth VA-der!
Avatar    Wed. 4/3/13 12:14pm pacific standard simon:

This cover is excellent!

This would make a helluva hoof 'n' mouth selection. Has anyone done it yet?

I seem to recall a Yo La Tengo version during the marathon...

So Darrell Waltrip's "Boogity Boogity Boogity" line is the fault of Jan and Dean. Learn something new every day.
Avatar    Wed. 4/3/13 12:18pm Danne D:

@Doug there needs to be a Hoofipedia for such questions
Avatar    Wed. 4/3/13 12:19pm Amanda:

Agreed, "Jet" would be a great Hoof & Mouth song. Especially with James's lyrics.

Heck, any made-up lyrics for "Jet" would make more sense than the original ones.
Avatar    Wed. 4/3/13 12:22pm Danne D:

There's been roughly 400-500 Hoof N Mouth performances I think
Avatar    Wed. 4/3/13 12:22pm Brian in UK:

Avatar Wed. 4/3/13 12:23pm Doug Schulkind:

@Danne D
About the closest we can come to Hoofipedia is going to this page: wfmu.org... and searching "marathon." But that only goes back to 2008.
Avatar    Wed. 4/3/13 12:23pm listener james from westwood:

i can't guarantee that i don't still sing it that way. :) "kid" is a very broad descriptor in my case.
this "sunny" cover is jumpin'!

i gotta say, it honestly bewilders me that you guys can't get your politicos to vote for a public health care system. surely a citizen's lobby would be be a stronger voice than the private health care lobby.
Avatar    Wed. 4/3/13 1:09pm Uncle Michael:

@glenn, surely not.
Avatar    Wed. 4/3/13 1:10pm ndbob:

@glenn the problem is many citizens don't want it
Avatar    Wed. 4/3/13 1:11pm Uncle Michael:

Because freedom.
Avatar    Wed. 4/3/13 1:11pm pacific standard simon:

@glenn - you would think so, but the flipside of the American paradigm (anyone can get rich, be President, whatever) is that everybody thinks that they WILL, someday... and they want to protect the walled garden.
Avatar Wed. 4/3/13 1:12pm glenn:

what can i say? yeah, my taxes are higher, but i don't have to worry about losing my house. i can budget for higher taxes. it's pretty hard to budget for some accident that ends up costing you a hundred grand.
Avatar    Wed. 4/3/13 1:14pm ndbob:

exactly glenn
Avatar    Wed. 4/3/13 1:14pm pacific standard simon:

Exactly. I have to have health insurance, now that I have a share in a house -- because another heart attack would endanger our home for all concerned.
Avatar Wed. 4/3/13 1:16pm glenn:

for example, my mom died exactly 3 years ago, of cancer. she was in hospital for the last 10 days of her life. it cost us about 150$ out of pocket. 50$ for the ambulance ride, 100$ for various drugs. and we got that money back from her teacher's pension insurance. i shudder to think what it would have cost in the states.
Avatar    Wed. 4/3/13 1:21pm pacific standard simon:

Anytime I hear The Teardrop Explodes, I think of listening to KJHK, Lawrence KS.
Avatar    Wed. 4/3/13 1:21pm Carmichael:

Americans will deal with this issue in the next few years. When the whole medical system crashes like the housing market did.
Avatar    Wed. 4/3/13 1:23pm Uncle Michael:

Any time I hear mention of KJHK, I remember tripping tits out on their lawn after a Grateful Dead concert in Kansas City in '83.
Avatar Wed. 4/3/13 1:24pm glenn:

tits out for the win.
Avatar Wed. 4/3/13 1:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Did Tripping Tits open for the Dead, Uncle Michael? By '83 all their stuff had gotten so corporate.
Avatar Wed. 4/3/13 1:25pm glenn:

Avatar    Wed. 4/3/13 1:44pm listener james from westwood:

coming in late on the health ins chat:
glenn: many us citizens have been wrongly convinced in the past 5 years that having a more robust, single-payer system is anti-american, will limit their options, will damage their quality of care, etc., the way that in wisconsin, folks who would benefit from union membership are being told it is somehow bad for them/constricts their freedom.
Avatar    Wed. 4/3/13 1:45pm Uncle Michael:

I have to depart for a meeting shortly. It's sad. Meetings suck more than anything and *way* more than the Scenario.
Avatar    Wed. 4/3/13 1:45pm Uncle Michael:

Testify, brother James.

glenn: my condolences on the sad anniversary. will have one next feb. 19th; my mom died this winter after a nightmarish 2012 of progressivley terminal copd. and as a sidenote, medicare helped immensely w/ the cost (8 emergency room trips/weeklong hosp stays and enough drugs to fill a car trunk), but 4 months in a rehab/nursing facility were all on us. had my dad not been a lifetime saver, they'd have been sunk. and now his financial health bar, so to speak, is that much shorter.

Avatar    Wed. 4/3/13 1:58pm listener james from westwood:

americans, myself included, are not good at making little changes or daily efforts to guarantee a distant payoff. we don't understand how slightly higher taxes each paycheck can ensure we don't get bankrupted in our old age when we need full room-n-board hospice, or a nursing home, or any other end-of-life massive-cost incident. this is why they want to make 401(k) plans default to opt-out vs. opt-in on signup. same logic.
