Every show starts with a cut from the ‘70s: Rediscovering the forgotten rockers, revisiting the once-hated disco beats, replaying the power-pop favorites. Next: copious amounts of new releases and occasional live bands. Also: I’m the biggest Nick Gilder fan on WFMU.

The word "legend" gets tossed around a lot, but few people are as deserving of this label and yet as unheralded as the brilliant songwriter/producer John Carter. The man sang backing vocals on "I Can't Explain," and co-wrote "Can't You Hear My Heartbeat," "Little Bit O' Soul," and "My World Fell Down" (to name just three). He also enjoyed success with the bands The Ivy League, The Flowerpot Men, and perhaps most notably with The First Class, whose hit "Beach Baby" -- co-written and produced by Carter, with frequent collaborator Tony Burrows on lead vocals -- is an unassailable pop classic. John Carter is also responsible for my favorite summer song of all-time, "Sound Of Summer" by Starbreaker. Listen to the archive and hear how all of this happened from the man himself, along with heaping helpings of music from throughout his career!

This is okay, but I was so hoping the show would start with Starbreaker.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 9:03pm G:

Here. No complaints :)
  Wed. 2/6/13 9:03pm john:

Who's Starbreaker?

What else *can* ya do if the girls don't like it?
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 9:05pm Barkevious Shabazz:

There goes Norman.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 9:07pm G:

I'm pretty sure we will all be "Starbreaker satisfied" by the witching hour
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 9:08pm steve:

hey lo
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 9:10pm G:

I got called four eyes a few times as a kid. That's what glasses get you in second grade. Never heard anyone get called Four Ears, though.
Wed. 2/6/13 9:10pm eddy in australia:

My first live-streamed EFD show since leaving new york and he kicks off with a song that namechecks "eddy"! thanks, evan. greetings from melbourne, australia, where it's 1 o'clock on a stinking hot thursday afternoon
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 9:12pm efd:

Hey eddy! You are in the perfect location for the summer-themed records that we'll be hearing later in the program.

Hi john, steve, G, Barkevious, 12539, and all lurkers! I'm super-excited about tonight's show, hope you all are too!
  Wed. 2/6/13 9:12pm Thierry:

Hi there everybody overseas!
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 9:13pm efd:

How flipped out would you guys be if I went through the whole John Carter interview without mentioning Starbreaker even one time?
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 9:13pm efd:

Greetings Thierry!
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 9:13pm efd:

boy this record is really scratchy
Wed. 2/6/13 9:15pm Michael from the Left Coast:

A friend of mine met Michael Zhilka (Ze Records pres) in a meeting about an acquisition in the oil and gas industry about two years ago.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 9:16pm G:

scratches give it character, i still hear the music --

and someone could take this as a music file and clean it right up these days, if they want clean. we "tapetraders" have done that with more shitty sounding 60s-70s concert cassettes than you can shake a stick at
Wed. 2/6/13 9:16pm Michael from the Left Coast:

EFD, you playing the Troggs tapes in memory of Reg Presley tonight?
  Wed. 2/6/13 9:17pm Thierry:

The scratch feels authentic, though. I guess that's the price to pay for unearthing a rare cover.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 9:17pm efd:

ha, I don't have the money to pay that fine!
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 9:17pm BSI:

THierry, I used to play her cover of the Mission Impossible theme all the time when I was at NYU (a long time ago).
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 9:26pm efd:

that said I'm not sure how popular she was with the general public.

Hello Evan & other friends!
Trivia query #1 - Who here knows John Carter's born name? (full disclosure - I had no clue before today ;-))
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 9:30pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Cristina's version of "Is That all Their Is? " is life affirming.

Wed. 2/6/13 9:36pm eddy in australia:

Barkevious: I second that! Used to finish my radio show in the '80s with that tune. A Ze Records special, Evan?
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 9:37pm Holly in NC:

@efd, not sure fair if you play! - plus I suspect/hope you'll let us know in interview.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 9:39pm GetOutOfDarkness:

Wait, what is going on with the very long piece?
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 9:41pm GetOutOfDarkness:

oh, nevermind
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 9:44pm efd:

Holly, it actually didn't come up during the interview!
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 9:47pm Holly in NC:

Well, heck, then you need to tell folks during mike break!
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 9:51pm Loretta:

Hi everyone! efd, looking forward to the John Carter intervew.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 9:51pm Holly in NC:

This is a great version of a great song ("she")
  Wed. 2/6/13 9:53pm Thierry:

Evan, I gather from your profile you're an Endless Boogie fan. I just discovered them 2 days ago with Dan Bodah's program. Amazing sound. How deep WFMU can be!
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 9:56pm Holly in NC:

Dang! I really wanted to heat Grudge/Laurice 's "I'm gonna smash your face in" immed. after Andy Human ;-)
     Wed. 2/6/13 9:56pm 12539:

@Thierry: Endless Boogie played the length of Brian Turner's show a week or two ago.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:00pm Holly in NC:

I have to get in my efd-less car & I'm pissed! Back in 30...
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:00pm efd:

Hey Thierry, yeah, I especially liked their appearance on Brian's show.

Holly, sorry about that! :)

Hey Loretta, thanks for tuning in!
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:01pm G:

this has made checking my tax return math far less annoying :)
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:03pm efd:

G, good for you getting your taxes done early!
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:03pm Holly in NC:

Before I get in my car , gotta say I want to marry John Carter's voice (swoon)
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:04pm Holly in NC:

His speaking voice. I could listen all day, all night..
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:04pm efd:

He could not have been nicer, either, just by the way.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:06pm G:

gotta get that freakin money back from those bastids. didnt get my last W2 till monday afternoon!

i read that there may be a backlog in refunds because of the tax rate debate, delays, changes right after the first of the year, etc etc etc. getting mine in the mail tomorrow... that's one less crappy thing to do :)
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:14pm efd:

Right, good to get it out of the way as early as possible!
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 10:15pm Uncle Michael:

I think I've made mistakes relative to the John Carter/Tony Burrows lineups of the Ivy League in the past. Living and learning.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:19pm efd:

That's understandable! There was a lot of shifting going on, not to mention the fact that John preferred not to tour so before Tony Burrows officially joined the Ivy League (after John left) he was performing the songs on the road.
Wed. 2/6/13 10:20pm Michael from the Left Coast:

That's Jimmy Page playing on the Brenda Lee track right?
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 10:21pm steve:

is it really?? what a great song, either way
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 10:21pm Uncle Michael:

Fortunately, on the Burrows tribute show I did, I chose My World Fell Down...so I didn't really betray my ignorance.
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 10:22pm Danne D:

Hi Funk Fans :)
A little distracted tonight so I am afraid I'll have to restart on the archive :)
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 10:23pm Danne D:

This is the sort of event that should be enjoyed in it's full measure not in parts clearly :D

Very happy for you Evan :)
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:23pm Stevel:

I'll offer a 'Wow" on Can't Explain.
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 10:24pm Uncle Michael:

I'll second the WOW. I had no idea.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:24pm efd:

Most accounts of that song do say that it's Jimmy Page on that, yes.
  Wed. 2/6/13 10:26pm Gaylord Fields:

I'm over the moon about this John Carter interview! He's responsible for one of my favorite girl group singles, Someone Cares for Me, by the McKinleys, which outdoes Phil Spector at his own game! Thank you, efd!
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:28pm efd:

Gaylord, it was a pleasure and a privilege! Glad you're enjoying it.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:29pm Loretta:

nice one.....
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:29pm G:

You've convinced me, he's the one-man Brill Building of mid 60s British pop :)
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 10:30pm Uncle Michael:

Located the McKinleys, Gaylord. Giving it a listen right after the show. Thanks for the tip.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:31pm efd:

He was even ahead of the curve on the whole bacon thing!
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 10:32pm Uncle Michael:

Him and Archie McPhee.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:35pm efd:

Not a Janis Joplin song...
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 10:35pm Uncle Michael:

So John sang the Coke commercial too, I assume?
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:36pm efd:

oh, good question! I'm really not sure; it could have been a nose-holding impostor. :)
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:36pm Stevel:

Pretty sure I'm running out of Wows. What a find.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:37pm efd:

"It wasn't a strain on the voice, it was a strain on the nose" - favorite quote of the interview.

Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:37pm Gaylord Fields:

@Uncle Michael: I think you'll be impressed. But wait till after efd's show! I'd hate to think I'm driving listeners away.
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 10:38pm Uncle Michael:

No worries, Gaylord. I found a whole collection that includes it called Touch The Wall of Sound.
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 10:39pm Uncle Michael:

Always felt this was a Ray Davies-inspired title.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:45pm efd:

I've been kicking myself since Saturday for not asking him his favorite versions of his songs done by others. But I'm pretty sure the Sagittarius version of "My World Fell Down" would have been one of the answers.
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 10:46pm Uncle Michael:

Anything near Curt Boettcher's orbit is about as good as anything gets for me...
  Wed. 2/6/13 10:47pm john:

I see his point. There's just a life to the Sagittarius version that doesn't really turn up here, and that's got to be down to Curt's arrangement. As it always is.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:48pm Gaylord Fields:

@uncle Michael: That's an essential girl group comp! And speaking of comps, John Carter's Measure for Measure, As You Like It and A Rose by Any Other Name are as consistent and consistently great as collections come.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:49pm efd:

... and they also provide a clue to his given surname!
  Wed. 2/6/13 10:49pm john:

Ahhh. There you go.

Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:50pm Gaylord Fields:

@efd: Yes, we already know it's actually Bacon!
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:51pm efd:

haha! Yes, something like that.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:51pm G:

I was researching some about the music, and spotted the answer to Holly's question. Just dropping another broad hint :)
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 10:51pm Uncle Michael:

@Gaylord, thanks for the recommendations.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:51pm efd:

Right, that was another in joke, using the name Frank Bacon!
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:54pm Gaylord Fields:

It really was cheeky of Carter to use that pseudonym. Talk about an in-joke!
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 10:54pm Uncle Michael:

Has anyone ever noticed the homage to the LGTSF melody during the fade on Beach Baby?
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:55pm G:

I've also wondered about why the name change. I'm figuring his actual last name sounded a little too un-poppy :)
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:57pm efd:

Good foreshadowing, Uncle Michael! Though we didn't discuss that explicitly.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 10:57pm Gaylord Fields:

Reminds me of when two WFMU DJs who share a surname were once paired up for a marathon shift, but because neither uses that name as an on-air handle, neither dared to acknowledge it.

Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 11:22pm Uncle Michael:

I had no idea that Carter'd written so many of these.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:22pm efd:

I really need to track down those other two John Carter compilations... Measure For Measure is great but I really want to hear what's on the other ones too.
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 11:22pm Julie:

This makes me think of Justin Hayward
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:23pm efd:

Hey Johnk, thanks so much! Glad you're enjoying the show.
Uncle Michael, will check out your Burrows set tomorrow!
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:23pm Gaylord Fields:

Forgive me for tooting my own French horn here: www.spinner.com...
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:24pm efd:

ooh, very nice Gaylord! I'll look forward to reading that!
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 11:24pm Uncle Michael:

@Julie I really felt that Journey's End was a Moodies simulacrum.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:27pm Gaylord Fields:

@efd: I'm so inspired by this incredible show that I'm actually making reference to my life outside WFMU!
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:28pm efd:

AND you gave yourself an avatar! I will be taking full credit for all of this.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:28pm efd:

also, thank you.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:28pm G:

I remember that darn Brit Cal ad, if it was broadcast in UK only that must have been 72-74 somewhere
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 11:29pm Uncle Michael:

This is why I come to WFMU/Ichiban/GTDR. I can actually learn cool stuff here.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:29pm Holly in NC:

@G - nice link - & sadly true.
I have found a still-warm squirrel leg (one, hind) in my attic.
I have left the house to allow nature (read cats) deal with a hapless, fatally wounded bird, getting only regurgitated beak & claws back next day.
And many vole lips on my doorstep.

When these beasties pass I think I'll keep all future cats inside only.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:29pm efd:

yeah, that would have been the timeframe G.
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 11:30pm Julie:

HAHA Gaylord has a life outside WFMU?
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:30pm Holly in NC:

@Gaylord - that's a great article, thnx for link!
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 11:31pm Uncle Michael:

We've Only Just Begun...Williams & Nichols did the commercial to hit record thing too.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:31pm G:

Dare I hazard a hypothesis: Even better than JERRY MUTHAF*@%ING SHIRLEY!!! (April 2011)
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:32pm efd:

oh yeah, good one Uncle Michael! I think that started out as a bank ad?
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 11:32pm Uncle Michael:

Correct, efd.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:32pm efd:

Oh my gosh, thanks G! I wish I could have done as much post-production on the Jerry Shirley interview, but I recorded that one the night before my show so there just wasn't any time.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:33pm G:

Both great, this even better :)
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:33pm Holly in NC:

@unclemichael - just saw *your* link, most excellent!

At last!
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:35pm efd:

As I said on Facebook, it's an hour and 36 minutes of foreplay leading up to a "Sound Of Summer" orgasm.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:36pm Holly in NC:

I just want to relisten to the ~minute leading up to efd's orgasm. Girls come first ;-)
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 11:37pm Julie:

how...um..vivid
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:37pm efd:

HUNGARIAN!!! THEY'RE HUNGARIAN YOU JERK!
[edit: I want to make it perfectly clear that I was yelling at myself here, not anyone else.]
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 11:38pm Julie:

is this Abba?
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:39pm efd:

They're the Hungarian Abba.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:39pm G:

@Julie: They wish.
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 11:39pm Uncle Michael:

I like Carter's slightly crass, Tin Pan Alley approach to trying to make hits. It's so filled with guile that it's guileless. It harkens back to before the dreaded concept of "cred" infiltrated pop music. Long live *craft*.
     Wed. 2/6/13 11:40pm 12539:

Döbbenetes! (Google translate tells me that's Hungarian for "awesome")
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:40pm Gaylord Fields:

@Holly: Aw shucks -- thanks!
@Julie: To quote Archie Campbell -- pfffffffft!!!
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:40pm efd:

He is an unabashed pop songwriter.
Wed. 2/6/13 11:40pm daveB from Oakland:

holy moly ... they sure do sound like abba.
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 11:42pm Uncle Michael:

But he doesn't seem to confuse sales success with creative success. He doesn't disavow something as "bad" just because it didn't sell. I think of that as Gibb Syndrome.
  Wed. 2/6/13 11:44pm Ryan Braun:

Dude awesome
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 11:44pm Uncle Michael:

Very nicely done.
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:44pm Gaylord Fields:

Okay, I'll say it if no one else will: All's well that ends well!

Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:52pm Gaylord Fields:

The play button's the thing! (Okay, I'll stop there.) What a stunning show, efd! I'll relisten and re-enjoy ASAP! Thank you and the Bard of British Pop!
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:53pm efd:

LOVE this Ampersands song ! Almost forgot about this album, how wrong is that?
Avatar Wed. 2/6/13 11:54pm G:

Oh, that's right, no one ever gave the answer to Holly's question about John Carter's birth name:

John Nicholas Shakespeare
Avatar    Wed. 2/6/13 11:56pm Danne D:

Congrats again EFD :) Sorry I couldn't focus on the show tonight :( but I will take all of this in in the archives

Have a great night everyone!
Avatar Thu. 2/7/13 12:00am G:

Don't encourage Mary Wing's wingdinging, efd :)
Avatar Tue. 2/12/13 11:27pm Droll:

You really cooked my noodle with The Other Ones! I instantly remembered Jayney Klimek from Tony Banks' solo album, but totally forgot about this single. It took me almost the entire song to remember/figure it out -- that was a trip!
