Hi there Dave
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:03pm Dave Mandl:

Hey Dave. I hope we have ten Daves again this week.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:04pm Dave E:

I'm heading to bed but will keep Dave M on in the background
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:04pm G:

I have an Uncle Dave, close as I get.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:04pm Dave E:

Dave is a very common name . . . my goodness there are 5 or 6 where I work.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:05pm Dave Mandl:

I'll try not to play anything too jarring.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:05pm Dave Mandl:

(I mean, so you can go to sleep, Dave)
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:05pm Dave E:

What a coincidence, I am an Uncle Dave

Nice photo essay, I left some comments about the Bay Ridge Branch railway trench you included...

Hi Dave & listeners! great set! I'm watching the Superbowl. BBC coverage has no ads!
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:33pm glenn:

i thought the brooklyn photos were great as well.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:33pm Dave Mandl:

Hey Kitty. But I thought the ads were part of the whole experience?
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:33pm Dave Mandl:

@glenn: Aw, thanks. I appreciate that.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:35pm Dave Mandl:

Here's a Brooklyn photo I took just this morning. You can be among the first to see it: dmandl.tumblr.com...

49rs making a come back! It's gonna be some finish :) 28-20
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:36pm glenn:

for some reason, i love the word canarsie. i don't know why, but i do..
Avatar Sun. 2/3/13 9:37pm Marmalade Kitty:

When CBS go to ads BBC goes to pundits in studio
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:37pm Dave Mandl:

@Kitty: It's been so long since I followed football that I'd never heard of the Ravens.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:37pm G:

Yes, could actually avoid Stupor Bowl blowout status for once... Was 28-6, now 28-20. Someone woke up the 49ers.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:38pm Dave Mandl:

@Glenn: Same here about Canarsie. My mother always used to mention it when I was a kid, and it took on this fantastic aura.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:41pm G:

@Dave: Years ago there were the Baltimore Colts, and as B. declined as a city in winter of 84 they packed up a convoy of trucks and moved to become the Indianapolis Colts. Baltimore was dissed and pissed. Ravens were kind of a makegood in 96 when Art Modell moved the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore and they were renamed with a Poe reference.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:42pm glenn:

there's a donald e. westlake book, i forget the title, in which canarsie plays a large part.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:43pm glenn:

yeah, and baltimore temporarily had a canadian football league franchise and won the grey cup, as weird as that sounds.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:44pm Dave Mandl:

@G: Thanks. So they were created in '96? And I only just found out this week? So much for football.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:44pm Dave Mandl:

@glenn: I'll look for that book, thanks.
Avatar Sun. 2/3/13 9:50pm Marmalade Kitty:

That must be very disturbing for the fan base of the clubs who shed their id
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:50pm G:

Exactly, Dave. If I had no relatives near Balt, *I* wouldn't know. They built the Ravens a nice new stadium and everything, probably with a fair amount of *public* money, as these things usually go, because after all so many local-election voters are football fans.

Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:54pm G:

28-23, start of 4th quarter, it's actually a competitive game again. My sense was that SF wasn't as bad a team as they seemed to be playing, I kinda thought they were maybe favored to win???
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:55pm Ike:

Hello all! Nice Gravesend photo, Dave.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:58pm G:

31-23, Balt is trying to slow that SF momentum...
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 9:59pm Andrew Waterloo:

Now that I know who's playing in the Superbowl...
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:01pm Ike:

Years ago, weren't all of the Stupor Bowls boring blowouts? Is it stupid of me to say that I find the recent trend of exciting SB games to be just sliiiiiiightly suspicious? Is there a way to rig the games to even it up a bit? Of course, I'm biased because I think concussion-ball is dumb and borderline psychotic.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:02pm Dave Mandl:

@Glenn: Thanks for the book info.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:02pm Dave Mandl:

Hey Ike. Thanks.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:04pm Cubicle Carl:

@Ike Exactly. That's why we're listening to World of Echo on Superbowl night.

now, if it was a world series night, that's a different story.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:07pm G:

are you waiting for toronto to get back in it, glenn? :P
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:07pm tomB:

Hey I thought I was the only one with the My Cat Is Dead CD. and wasn't that the voice of Eric Mingus?
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:11pm Dave Mandl:

@tomB: Yes, Eric Mingus is on that CD. Nice call.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:12pm glenn:

there gonna be pretty good this year, if the creeks don't rise and the good lord's willin'

sorry. they're.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:12pm G:

could be, but dont go overboard and hold your breath...
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:15pm Andrew Waterloo:

The Superbowl is proof that there is no god.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:17pm G:

@glenn: Vegas has Jays at 15-2 to take the Series, best odds of any team right at the moment.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:17pm glenn:

believe me, as a maple leafs fan, i know not to go overboard.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:18pm Andrew Waterloo:

as a leaf fan you should know that you shouldn't even be out on deck
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:19pm Andrew Waterloo:

You may, however, look at the port hole once in awhile
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:19pm glenn:

that's true, and funny.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:20pm G:

Balt 31 SF 29 barely over 5 minutes, an actual game.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:22pm G:

34-29, barely 4 mins left, SF really needs to score now if they want the game, duh
     Sun. 2/3/13 10:22pm 12539:

Dave M, are you going to try some telepathy with Matmos?
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:23pm Dave Mandl:

@12539: Anything's possible. I'll give it a shot if they want me to.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:23pm George of Troy:

Evening, Dave. Excited to hear that Matmos will be on the show.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:24pm Dave Mandl:

Hey George. Yeah, me too.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:29pm G:

Great Crim. choice from a great album

SF is 2nd and goal to go, 2 minutes left
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:31pm G:

@Ike 10:01 nfl.com site just said each of the last four super bowls has had a game-winning scoring drive in the 4th quarter. amazing coincidence...
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:35pm Droll:

[short break from lurking in kitchen]
iTunes tells me its been 2 years 3 months since I last listened to that KC album. Thanks for the reminder -- terrible oversight on my part. Red also just got scheduled.
[back to kitchen lurking]
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:36pm G:

Baltimore held them. SF had first and goal at about 6, and then lost the ball on downs without scoring. close but no cigar, guys
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:46pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Harbaugh 1, Harbaugh 0
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:46pm G:

34-31, final.

Baltimore took a deliberate 2-point safety to kill the clock down to 4 seconds and give SF no chance to score again
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 10:51pm G:

Want noise? Here's a humungo solar radiation burst frying the living crap out of some shortwave transmission today. It's from a large sunspot that is turning toward the earth this week --

Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:02pm George of Troy:

Coincidentally, I discovered today that Jozef Van Wissem (who played on a previous track) also played on an M.B. record from a few years ago called Das Platinzeitalter that I like quite a bit.
     Sun. 2/3/13 11:06pm 12539:

Dave M, a playlist search shows you've actually played from a few other Cale albums. Does this count towards the 2% rock n roll?
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:08pm Dave Mandl:

Have I? Damn the internet. I can't remember playing anything but Paris 1919, but the playlist search doesn't lie.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:10pm G:

Quite the sotaque carioca (rio de janeiro accent) on display here

Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:13pm Dave Mandl:

@12539: Thanks. Glad I've actually played all those Cale records, but seriously I always want to play Paris 1919.

Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:25pm braveness23:

This Simone White is pretty. I've never listened to WFMU in the evening, just during M-F 8-5. Well done! I'll be listening in the evenings more often.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:26pm Droll:

Ethernet is a pedestrian name depending on where you are on in the technology curve. Back in my day a band could get by with just "Wire".

Collector Alert: Sony is retiring MiniDisc in March!
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:27pm braveness23:

I'm going to name my band The OSI Model
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:29pm Dave Mandl:

@braveness23: Great. Welcome to the evening.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:30pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: I know. But it's the name of a networking protocol. An odd choice, but maybe that's a good thing.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:30pm Dave Mandl:

Naturally I've got a bunch of things on MiniDisc. I actually liked that technology. I used to record my shows on MD.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:37pm Droll:

HotChip also has a dubious band name. It's a fab lot term and a conference name. Always made me squirm.

I hated cassette and switched to MD as soon as it became available in 92-93. I always admired the clever pricing that blanks cost as much as recorded MDs. Last summer I ripped all my MDs to WAVs, rediscovering lots of lost gems, then took the MD player down the the electronics recycler.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:40pm braveness23:

Heh, I dabbled in alternate media. Wish I could borrow a DAT player for a weekend to get some treasures off of it.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:42pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

On last week's Seven Second Delay, after the show's premise was exhausted 35 minutes in, it changed to an "oldest regularly used electronic technology you own" show. One guy called and said he had a working DCC (digital compact cassette) player! Remember those? MiniDisc vs. DCC was supposed to be the next VHS vs. Beta, except consumers ignored both. 33 minutes, I believe, was the caller's estimation of the time it took for them to become obsolete.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:43pm braveness23:

Today I choose whatever medium is most likely to be playable when I'm 70. If you can't listen to MP3's or look at PDF's in 2050 then it probably means the world has blown up.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:45pm Andrew Waterloo:

Economist had a short comment in their last issue which argued that the only technologies that truly die are digital. Basically, we still have vinyl, we still have cassette, but we don't have DAT, or MiniDisc etc.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:45pm Pete from Boston (and NJ):

braveness23, you mean folk tradition, in other words -- if you can perform it and pass it on, it's pretty much the only guarantee it'll still be around.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:46pm braveness23:

But we do have some file formats that seem to be enduring pretty well.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:49pm Andrew Waterloo:

@B23, true, but how many have survived because incremental updates that couldn't have happened in the strictly hardware world.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:49pm Droll:

AW, Not true: Lots of analog formats are gone -- try and find an 8-track player.

Digital stuff is now advanced enough that machine simulators are fast enough to run old programs in a virtual machine. We can run Atari and Colecovision games today in our browsers. And we'll eventually run browsers emulating 8-bit games in neural mind-link devices.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:52pm Ike:

I often ponder: Will that neural mind-link device of the future allow me to upload my consciousness elsewhere? Should we want to do that?
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:52pm Andrew Waterloo:

@Droll, the point is the hardware is gone. The technology changed from a machine that reads a program from a card, to software that reads a file.
     Sun. 2/3/13 11:54pm 12539:

Viva la radio!
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:56pm braveness23:

In yours and my lifetimes (and our childrens) I'll bet we never own a digital device that doesn't know what an MP3, PDF and JPG are. Just sayin'. We are rapidly hitting the point where compression isn't necessary but these lossy formats are still pretty damned acceptable. Rarely do I need ot look at a picture and be assured that the 45th thousand pixel from the left 89 million rows down is the precise color it was in real life.
     Sun. 2/3/13 11:57pm 12539:

..and all its digital extensions.

Nice show, Dave.
Avatar    Sun. 2/3/13 11:59pm Dave Mandl:

Thanks, everyone. Have a great week.
Avatar    Mon. 2/4/13 12:00am Droll:

I already have .ppt and .doc files I can't read.

See y'inz next week (or 3 minutes)
Avatar    Mon. 2/4/13 12:00am G:

braveness: as you say, mp3 is lossy, and i bet there will be a move to a non-lossy audio format as storage cost keeps coming down, with mp3s being able to be played on equipment that plays the new non-lossy format as it takes over.

i see many audiophile and into-music types who view mp3 as temporary. remember when CDs were going to last "virtually forever"?
