It's funny how often I have to work overtime on a Tuesday. I'm beginning to think it is a Pavlovian response to Solid Gold Hell. I'd probably never tune in otherwise and only listen to archives.

wooo! listening live from San Francisco

Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 12:23am BadGuyZero:

@Sue P: have you heard about a compilation called "The Reverb Conspiracy?" It's a bunch of psych acts from Europe. The folks behind Austin Psych Fest are distributing it in the U.S. If you haven't heard it yet I think you should check it out; I think you would be like it.
Avatar Wed. 1/30/13 12:23am Marmalade Kitty:

Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 12:48am KP:

Are there two High Rises?
Avatar Wed. 1/30/13 12:50am Sue P.:

There may well be many High Rises! But in my world this one, the Japanese band from the late 80's to late 90's is THEE High Rise.
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 12:56am KP:

Once a Fmu dj asked if anyone knew of a decent record store in Paris. I told him about Bimbo Towers, which specialized in Japanese punk, and where I bought high rise). I gave very detailed directions as it was very hard to find. Two weeks later he was on air raving about Bimbo Towers, didn't mention me or even fact that a listener pointed him there. Ce lest vie.
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 12:56am InBrkly:

Was that an intentional Thee? John Dwyer uses Thee in various projects (I think more than Thee Oh Sees) so I wonder if there is a connection....
  Wed. 1/30/13 12:57am seetfu:

enjoyed that, thx
  Wed. 1/30/13 12:59am odin v:

High Rise just scorched my brains.
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 1:00am BadGuyZero:

@InBrkly: I've always assumed that Dwyer is paying homage to Billy Childish [who had several "Thee" bands].
  Wed. 1/30/13 1:00am seetfu:

"thee" is nothing new. popular with garage punk bands for a long time. i have no idea where it comes from...
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 1:01am BadGuyZero:

@KP: This place? bimbo.tower.free.fr
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 1:01am InBrkly:

Yeah I almost typed Thee Headcoats instead of Thee Oh Sees.
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 1:16am G:

The earliest example of "Thee" I found so far is late 60s: "Thee Midniters adopted the unusual "Thee" to avoid the possibility of a legal challenge from the established R&B group of a somewhat earlier era, Hank Ballard & The Midnighters." (in wiki, but footnoted to a published source)

"Thee" is also just a distinctive and rebellious distortion of an extremely common word, and kinda goofs on "The Plurals" type band names.
Avatar Wed. 1/30/13 1:17am Sue P.:

You guys are getting all scholarly on me.
  Wed. 1/30/13 1:17am dishroom:

  Wed. 1/30/13 1:18am Ryan:

Nothing goes better with Isis than musical etymology!
  Wed. 1/30/13 1:19am KP:

BGZ, yes. My wife was "stationed" over there and allowed me to visit.while she worked, I wandered. It was great.
  Wed. 1/30/13 1:21am KP:

Thee Headcoats are not v. scholarly.
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 1:21am InBrkly:

Let us continue the lesson. "The Plurals" type band names? Examples?
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 1:22am InBrkly:

Well I guess anything starting with The.... Ask a stupid question.
Avatar Wed. 1/30/13 1:23am Marmalade Kitty:

I watched the animated film "When the wind blows" tonight for the first time in 20 years. Forgot how creepy it was/is
Avatar    Wed. 1/30/13 1:25am InBrkly:

@MK, the original is hard to find. Subsequent releases were censored. Still creepy though.
Avatar Wed. 1/30/13 1:38am Marmalade Kitty:

Its a chilling animated film based on the Raymond Briggs Novel that depicts a nuclear attack on Britain, experienced by an old couple in an isolated countryside village..
