I've seen the name "mouse on mars" around but had no idea what the hell it was. This piece is a groove, w/surrealist slide gtr thingies. Approved-plus.

They did knock -- I heard them anyway. Hiya, Lewis! |

they're hard to miss, what with the big hair and leopardskin and all.

Doug S.:
Tony at 80% is like mere mortals at 120%.
Tue. 1/15/13 1:11pm
tonyc:
@ Glenn: You're right -- I heard the hair from blocks away. Greetings, Glenn! |

glenn:
howdy. or boy howdy, as ross thomas would say.
Tue. 1/15/13 1:14pm
tonyc:
@ Doug: Than Yo, Dou! (that's roughly 80 percent of the required letters) |
Tue. 1/15/13 1:18pm
glenn:
75%, but who's counting?
Tue. 1/15/13 1:19pm
F.Z.:
"You should be diggin' it while it's happen'n."
Tue. 1/15/13 1:20pm
tonyc:
@ Glenn: Ah yes, but I would have used 4 exclamation points if I was in perfect health. |
Tue. 1/15/13 1:20pm
tonyc:
Hey, F.Z.! |
Tue. 1/15/13 1:23pm
Moncardo Ritalban:
That Toupidex track is amazing!
Tue. 1/15/13 1:26pm
tonyc:
They're one of my longtime fave bands. |
Tue. 1/15/13 1:30pm
tonyc:
@ Glenn: So much for my math skills -- with added invisible exclamation points I'm probably down to less than 70 percent of required letters. I better rest up and drink lots of hot tea, as I seem to be losing strength rapidly. |

Salutations Tony and all, just dropped in to get my mind some conditioning (gaye bykers on dope) and all that!

Tue. 1/15/13 1:33pm
tonyc:
Salutations, Sir L.A.P.! |
Tue. 1/15/13 1:34pm
Sir Lancelot Armstrong Pratt:
looks like you've been indulging in some rarified and haloed art damaged, post punk, new wave!
Tue. 1/15/13 1:36pm
tonyc:
More or less, I guess! |
Tue. 1/15/13 1:42pm
Sir Lancelot Armstrong Pratt:
I must say I enjoyed immensely DDD's show last week of where were they at the start of their careers. But the one that was the most startlingly was the Attilla track, Billy Joel's first band. Much debate took place, the bone of contention being whether that particular album was the worst rock album of all time. The majority believed so, with a small but vociferous minority holding that it was far too adventurous to be the worst. That glorious label was held to be in fact Billy Joel's debut solo album!
Tue. 1/15/13 1:43pm
tonyc:
Glad you enjoyed it! Many thanks again to Thom for the fill-in. |
Tue. 1/15/13 1:43pm
Jeremy:
Hey Tony, just tuning in, this set is great! Will have to return to the archives to check out that Ariel Kalma, I wake up to drones and bird sounds of Osmose every morning, it's in my CD clock radio...
Tue. 1/15/13 1:45pm
tonyc:
Hey Jeremy! I scored a bunch of Kalma cassettes a while back and am still making my way through them -- some are great. I'll be sure to report back here. |
Tue. 1/15/13 1:46pm
tonyc:
By playing 'em, that is. |
Tue. 1/15/13 1:51pm
Jeremy:
Thanks, will be on the lookout. This Pseudo Code is fantastic stuff!
Tue. 1/15/13 2:02pm
tonyc:
Glad you like the Pseudo Code, Jeremy. They recorded a ton of music in 1981–82, much of it unreleased at the time. The unreleased stuff has been coming out finally over the last couple of years and is of surprisingly high quality. (Everything on "Slaughter in a Tiny Place" is previously unreleased.) |
Tue. 1/15/13 2:02pm
Sir Lancelot Armstrong Pratt:
Is this the same Kristin Hersh who was in the Breeders?
Tue. 1/15/13 2:03pm
tonyc:
She was in the Throwing Muses -- don't know about the Breeders. |
Tue. 1/15/13 2:04pm
Jeremy:
Oh yes! Hands to Take is probably in my top ten favorite songs! This album should have been bigger then the first.
Tue. 1/15/13 2:05pm
Moncardo Ritalban:
I think it's Kim Deal that was in the Throwing Muses, then Breeders.
Tue. 1/15/13 2:05pm
tonyc:
RE "Hands 2 Take": It's a Ken Freedman fave too, fer sure. |
Tue. 1/15/13 2:05pm
Moncardo Ritalban:
Or Kelly Deal. I can't remember. Kim was in The Pixies, of that I am fairly certain.
Tue. 1/15/13 2:06pm
Jeremy:
My David Cunningham obsession only grows with time.
Tue. 1/15/13 2:07pm
Sir Lancelot Armstrong Pratt:
my mistake - The Breeders were an American alternative rock band formed in 1988 by Kim Deal of Pixies and Tanya Donelly of Throwing Muses (but not Kristin Hersh).
Tue. 1/15/13 2:08pm
tonyc:
@ Jeremy: Have you heard "Grey Scale"? A great album, and certainly totally different from the Flying Lizards. |
Tue. 1/15/13 2:09pm
Jeremy:
Tanya Donelly was only on the first Breeders LP, Pod, then Kelly joined for the second, which had all the hits. I prefer Pod, it's a great album.
Tue. 1/15/13 2:10pm
Moncardo Ritalban:
Three people of the New Wave era that I find really fascinating now but really overlooked by me at the time: David Cunningham, Craig Leon and Morgan Fisher.
Tue. 1/15/13 2:11pm
Moncardo Ritalban:
I have to confess that I actually liked the Pixies when Kim Deal had equal time singing. After she was sort of shuffled to just being just bass player/backing singer I sort of lost interest in them. One of the most criminally over-rated bands of the 90s, which is saying a lot.
Tue. 1/15/13 2:16pm
New Guard:
More T.L. Fantastic. | |
Tue. 1/15/13 2:16pm
Jeremy:
Yep, I have Grey Scale too, I think it was his first LP? Trying to get my hands on everything. Most recently got his productions for Martin Creed, stark and funny stuff.
Tue. 1/15/13 2:17pm
tonyc:
Hey New Guard -- yep, T.L. is Toups! |
Tue. 1/15/13 2:21pm
Jeremy:
I love both the Pixies and the Breeders! The Pixies came around when I was in high school and achieved quite a high profile for such a strange band, and what a breath of fresh air they were for me. Then the Breeders were a huge smash and it was one of the first times I liked what was on the radio. Kelly Deal's guitar playing on the second album is wonderful.
Tue. 1/15/13 2:23pm
tonyc:
Have to admit I don't know either band at all. Where should a newbie start? |
Tue. 1/15/13 2:23pm
Jeremy:
Finnish? Sounds mongolian...
Tue. 1/15/13 2:24pm
tonyc:
Yep, Finnish. I'm thinking maybe it's Sami? |
Tue. 1/15/13 2:26pm
Jeremy:
I think the first EP by the Pixies, Come on Pilgrim is a good place to start. The first LP is also great, the second is more poppy but also great, then they lose the thread for me, maybe because as RM said, Kim is shunted off.
Tue. 1/15/13 2:27pm
Jeremy:
Must investigate Sami...
Tue. 1/15/13 2:38pm
tonyc:
Both Bertoni and Serotti (on now) are from the band Confusional Quartet. |
Tue. 1/15/13 2:40pm
BSI:
confusionally delicious.
Tue. 1/15/13 2:42pm
BSI:
god, this is lovely. | |
Tue. 1/15/13 2:43pm
tonyc:
Glad you approve! |
Tue. 1/15/13 2:47pm
BSI:
Enthusiastically so, boss.
Tue. 1/15/13 2:50pm
tonyc:
This Doubling Riders track is co-written by Pascal Comelade, as you can probably now hear! |
Tue. 1/15/13 2:50pm
northguineahills:
Very awesome set, tony!
Tue. 1/15/13 2:51pm
tonyc:
Thanks, NGH! |
Tue. 1/15/13 2:53pm
Jeremy:
love this Joe Crow track too! No 7" here though, only have it on that Cherry Red comp.
