Thought The Ink Spots were familiar--they did the original "My Prayer" (and hence can definitely be counted as a precursor to doo-wop, rock 'n roll and R&B). They also recorded "When the Swallows Come Back to Capistrano", "Cow Cow Boogie"(with Ella Fitzgerald), "Prisoner of Love" and other standards.

Also interesting that a 1948 song of theirs was "The Best Things in Life Are Free"--so "Money" may have been name-checking that earlier song. (But you can give them to the birds and bees)

@efd: That is often the dynamic; Bob Seger is one I think of as a "local sensation", since he was very well known in the Detroit era from the late 60s on, but didn't get super popular national attention until the mid 70s.
