Fri. 11/30/12 9:01am Bob in Charlottesville:

It must be a special feeling when you see a picture on the web and know that that will be the picture for the top of your Friday morning playlist. Especially this week.
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 9:02am Doug Schulkind:

@Bob in C
I knows 'em when I sees 'em.

Welcome to Radio of the Damned, El Thatchmo.
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 9:09am Doug Schulkind:

Hello Maggie dear! Yes, my throat feels like this guy's instrument sounds.
Fri. 11/30/12 9:13am Brian in UK:

@Maggie just had a 'flu jab today. Doug, you a Rum Baba, creamy outside, impossibly rich inside.
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 9:20am Doug Schulkind:

I bet the drumset pictured was played by Count Basie's drummer Sam Woodyard on the band's signature tune "Jumping at the Woodside."

OK, that's all I got.
  Fri. 11/30/12 9:20am Maggie:

Brian in UK - i hope you have better luck with your shot than i did with mine. it's the first time i ever got sick right after getting the shot.

Doug you need a Djinn & Tonic? Better get dawg walking.
  Fri. 11/30/12 9:40am Paul Sherratt:

Great name Brian and useful if you ever need to be polite to a tory politician.
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 9:41am Doug Schulkind:

Oh don't get me started about Roxy Gordon! You got me started...

We ALL have Brother Paul Sherratt to thank for turning me onto Roxy Gordon.
  Fri. 11/30/12 9:43am Paul Sherratt:

Uncle, my young dog, Roxy, wants to know which song you were thrilled by.
Fri. 11/30/12 9:44am Brian in UK:

Hello Paul, yes Brian is a great name!! The chances of that happening are like an Italian waiters' hips, slim.
How is the little Roxy?
  Fri. 11/30/12 9:45am Uncle Michael:

It was the Rhythm Rebels rap.
  Fri. 11/30/12 9:46am Uncle Michael:

"...and what about Roger Miller..."
  Fri. 11/30/12 9:46am Elias:

My word! That was a good song. This one is too.
  Fri. 11/30/12 9:46am Artie:

Glorious, glorious horns!!
Fri. 11/30/12 9:47am Brian in UK:

@UM that was the first Roxy Gordon I heard on this very show around Dec '05
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 9:47am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning Doug!

Off for a tramp in the woods. Fill in the punch line yourselves.
  Fri. 11/30/12 9:51am Uncle Michael:

Brian, I looked for it and it looks like it was played once...in 2004. I could be wrong.
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

Getting gooder by the minute, Elias!
  Fri. 11/30/12 9:52am Uncle Michael:

This set makes me want to bury a dear friend.
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 9:53am Doug Schulkind:

As long as you've received prior permission, Uncle Michael.
  Fri. 11/30/12 9:54am Paul Sherratt:

Brian,

If you go down to the woods today ... ( great song, esp the Henry Hall version with vocals by Val Rosing )
  Fri. 11/30/12 9:56am Uncle Michael:

I think this must be what Alex Chilton really had in mind.
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 9:57am Doug Schulkind:

This 9th Ward MB track was featured on WFMU's tumblr pages as the #newrekkid of the day:

  Fri. 11/30/12 9:57am Paul Sherratt:

Saw the Dirty Dozen once. Noticed our Dame, Helen Mirren joining in the fun too.
  Fri. 11/30/12 9:58am Uncle Michael:

I saw DDBB on Congo Square, the one year we went to Jazzfest. So much fun.
Fri. 11/30/12 9:59am Alex in Illinois:

Wow, that was great marching-band music, though this grooves more than marches. I don't think I would have sought this out or discovered it on my own.
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 9:59am Doug Schulkind:

Don't you feel bad for the literally billions of people not listening to this right now?
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 10:01am Doug Schulkind:

DJ Monica on WFMU Sunday evenings is big into marching band music. Plays her some killer dillers regularly.
  Fri. 11/30/12 10:01am Uncle Michael:

They can't hear this in Syria.
  Fri. 11/30/12 10:02am Paul Sherratt:

Doug,
It's an inexplicable world.

Uncle, that's where we saw DDBB. No idea of the year !
  Fri. 11/30/12 10:03am Uncle Michael:

Paul, For me it was was probably around '93 or '94.
  Fri. 11/30/12 10:04am Elias:

Thanks for placing that link, I just ordered two copies of the 9th Ward Marching Band LP. Two, so that my brother and I don't have to share. He lives downstairs, but in a crisis two flights might be too far to go.
Fri. 11/30/12 10:10am Alex in Illinois:

I saw DDBB at the 1989 Jazzfest in New Orleans.
@Paul Sherratt? Could it have been that year? I think that was right after their Voodoo release.
  Fri. 11/30/12 10:11am Uncle Michael:

I like when Doug presents more actual humans. He's like P.T. Barnum.
  Fri. 11/30/12 10:12am holland oats:

Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 10:13am Doug Schulkind:

On behalf of the 9th Ward Marching Band, Elias, I thank you two times.

Uncle Michael, actual humans are among my favorite kind.

Hiya holland!
  Fri. 11/30/12 10:14am Uncle Michael:

I'm thinking of making Lechon Cubano today.
  Fri. 11/30/12 10:18am Paul Sherratt:

Alex, I think it probably was '89. I got in to trouble with the OH for fantasising about Dame H's presence. However when she sat down on the grass next to us a couple of years later at an astonishing Ann Peebles/Otis Clay show I felt pretty smug ...
  Fri. 11/30/12 10:20am duke:

Los Destellos very tasty guitar work
  Fri. 11/30/12 10:20am Paul Sherratt:

Doug, that Carlos Puebla song isn't on this Egrem cd here on the desk.
Something wrong there !
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 10:21am Doug Schulkind:

Who doesn't fantasise about Dame H? I dream of being handcuffed by Inspector Tennison and inter-O-gated.
  Fri. 11/30/12 10:21am Uncle Michael:

Wow, Paul...were the Hodges in the Peebles/Clay live band?
  Fri. 11/30/12 10:28am Paul Sherratt:

Uncle,
Pass, sorry ! The NO highlight however remains that Rebirth Brass Band gig in The Glass House
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

You can have that track since you put your mouth on it, duke.
  Fri. 11/30/12 10:31am Paul Sherratt:

Wonderful stuff Mr DJ, but hasn't that Miles Cleret got a grand pair of ears ?
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 10:33am Doug Schulkind:

He's sure got big ones, Brother Paul.
  Fri. 11/30/12 10:40am Uncle Michael:

I didn't catch the nature of the Ozzie Guillen reference...what did I miss?
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 10:41am Doug Schulkind:

Unlike me, Ozzie got fired for saying nice about Fidel Castro.
  Fri. 11/30/12 10:43am Fiveash:

The Onion's "The quotable Ozzie Guillen" from sometime last year is one of the funniest things I have ever read. Sample quote: "Wrigley Field makes me puke. When I eat a little bit of the ivy on the wall it make me puke barf everywhere"
http://www.theonion.com/articles/the-quotable-ozzie-guillen,17853/
  Fri. 11/30/12 10:43am Uncle Michael:

Ah. If he'd have been a manager worth saving, he would have been saved.
  Fri. 11/30/12 10:47am Uncle Michael:

My cat thinks my stereo is broken. My cat is a philistine.
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 10:47am Doug Schulkind:

@Fiveash
The nonfiction Ozzie is funnier that the fiction.
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

Quick, Uncle Michael, make a YouTube of your cat thinking the stereo is broken. You'll make millions.
  Fri. 11/30/12 10:50am Fiveash:

Doug, he really is. I remember a quote to the effect that he wouldn't let a hard loss get to him, he'd just drink a six pack of beer and take an ambien. Something like that.
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

  Fri. 11/30/12 10:52am Uncle Michael:

Poor Ozzie speaks in Gibberish and is bad at baseball.

More like, poor Ozzie toked too freely.

  Fri. 11/30/12 10:58am ozzy:

Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

You will always have a home here, Oz. We'll keep a permanent hot mic for you whenever you feel the urge.
Fri. 11/30/12 11:01am Brian in UK:

@UM Ref Roxy, make that Dec '04. That means I have been listening to this Freefrom (sic) for eight bluddy years. No idea what (sic) means but I have often fancied writing it.
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:01am ndbob:

@Brian that was pretty funny - I've read about other times when mainstream news organizations mistook Onion stories as real ones
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:03am Uncle Michael:

ndbob, the only part of the onion quote that was made up was the part about eating ivy.
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:03am tr,sh:

I read Onion 'stories' alongside regular news. It helps to keep me on my toes.

Media is obsessed with story-telling.
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:09am kat330:

Hello Doug and all y'all! I'll most always be very late to this playlist on Fridays, but still listening and tune-grooving, as I'm able, the first two hours. :)

Doug, sorry to hear you're still feeling lousy. :( I might have been Patient Zero with my nasty cold back on Oct.10th. No flu symptoms, but certainly the full extent of cold symptoms. Noticed many on the playlists have contracted colds in sequence since then.
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

You were very good to cover your mouth while commenting, kat330. I'm sure I got it from someone else.
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:11am ndbob:

Heya Kat!
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:11am Uncle Michael:

My weekly voice-tracked show is theme-based and sometimes I get stuck for an idea and in those cases I usually do a "keyword" show. I'm working on keyword: "tonight." It's cool thought. the set has seven consecutive decades represented and I like that. I had a recent show with nine consecutive decades.
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 11:11am Doug Schulkind:

This song title translates (from Dutch) as "Why Don't You Let Me Stand"
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:11am kat330:

I *do* know how to politely cough into my elbow, yes.

Hi, Bob!

Henk hears heaven with a pedal steel.
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 11:13am Doug Schulkind:

Uncle Michael, you are ALWAYS welcome to mention your show and provide linkage!
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:13am ndbob:

a couple of really lovely songs here
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:15am Uncle Michael:

Thanks Doug. More just shooting the breeze about how I'm spending my morning than "drumming up" business...but I'll drum...
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:15am kat330:

Doug, I recall a familiar tune for your talkover music early on -- maybe the first or second mic break -- but I can't now think of what it was, and none of your listings have a familiar song title. Hm. Guess I'll visit the archive once it's up.
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

Indonesian music often sounds very "polite" to me. Even the fuzzed-out wilder stuff.
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

I'm all ears (well, mostly ears), kat330!
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:17am kat330:

(drumming fingers) So what's the link, Unc?
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:18am Carmichael:

Good morning Doug and drummers of all ilks.
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:19am kat330:

@Doug: Well, I'm certain the title wasn't "Regay" or "Dead Dog in the Street," so unless the track mentions "a version of...." I simply can't even find the tune to hum in my head anymore. I'll check your archive in a few hours.
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:19am Uncle Michael:

The voice-tracked show is for Viva Radio ( http://viva-radio.com )and is aired thrice weekly, first airing is Wednesday at 8:00PM (all time zones, internet magic). My archive is at http://ebs-radio.com The show is The Emergency Broadcast System...then there's the live show...
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:20am kat330:

Thanks, UM!
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

@kat330
The "Regay" track in the first mic break was really that song from the Sound of Music (the name escapes me at the moment).
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:21am kat330:

Yes, yes!! Lonely Goatherd!
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

Hallooooo Carmichael!
Fri. 11/30/12 11:21am Brian in UK:

@kat try Regay. just a thought.
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:22am Uncle Michael:

My live show is Hinky Dinky Time Radio and it's on Wednesdays at 8:30 PM, Central. Audio is archived at http://hinkydinky.net The best way to catch the show live is at http://stickam.com/hdtr where you'll have the joy of actually seeing me do the show....
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:22am kat330:

Mystery solved, but I'll still check out the archives for much I missed. :)
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:23am Uncle Michael:

Welcome, kat... :)
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

This guy sound very drunk, but still extremely polite.
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:24am kat330:

This is wild, heh! Is he crying?
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:24am Uncle Michael:

He's gonna get bounced...but not violently.
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:24am ndbob:

this is great!.. sounds a but like the Screaming Jay Hawkins of Indonesia
Fri. 11/30/12 11:25am Van in DC:

I think it's a counterpoint to Mind Train :)
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:25am Uncle Michael:

It's amazing. I love this.
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:25am kat330:

Exactly, Bob!

So, Doug, are you planning an Australian extravaganza on your shows next week?
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:26am Carmichael:

"Up on a hill with a lonely goat" in reggae?!?
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:27am Uncle Michael:

Oh dear...my listeners are in big trouble...Fedex was just here.
Fri. 11/30/12 11:27am Brian in UK:

Anyone listening to KBOO later?
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:28am kat330:

@Carm: I don't recall a particularly reggae spin on it. What would reggae yodeling sound like I wonder?
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:28am Uncle Michael:

My new effects processor just arrived. I'm gonna go all "Rex" on their asses.

KBOO?
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:29am kat330:

@Brian: What are they scarin' up on KBOO?
Fri. 11/30/12 11:30am Brian in UK:

  Fri. 11/30/12 11:39am Andy S.:

McKinley Mitchell -- killer track! Check out his later ballads "The End of the Rainbpw" and "The Town I Live In." Only 51 when he died in early '86 (heart attack) -- sad loss.
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:39am kat330:

Thanks, Brian (delayed by doorbell)!
Fri. 11/30/12 11:41am Van in DC:

Here come the fuzz bwaa ha ha
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings Andy S!
The Shout comp of Mitchell's One-Derful tracks is stellar.
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:46am kat330:

@UM 10:14: This afternoon I'll be taking a 14-lb. turkey from its brine and roasting it up, stuffed with herbs from our garden, segments of clementines, onions and apples, and diced carrots and celery. This is the turkey Philo's company doles out each year, usually the Friday before Thanksgiving, but didn't manage it until the Monday before. Too late for thawing, brining and roasting on Wednesday as needed. So it's been kept in his office fridge in the interim. This weekend will be T-giving redux. :)
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:49am ndbob:

sounds great Kat!
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

When would you like us, kat330, how about 6:30? I'll bring some spicy pecans and wine.
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:51am kat330:

Honestly, I wish I *could* get beam all of you here! I have to freeze a bunch, make soup and endless leftovers.

Talking turkey, are you going to do the blog you mentioned, Doug?
Fri. 11/30/12 11:51am Brian in UK:

@kat could you sent me a scratch & sniff email photograph please.
Fri. 11/30/12 11:52am Van in DC:

& taste :)
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:52am Uncle Michael:

That sounds great Kat...nit sure why I was honored with the post directed to me but thanks! I did a new Turkey recipe last week...last year I brined for the forst time but I think I'll stick with this year's dry brine recipe.
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:52am kat330:

[oops missing a "t" in honestly -- just borrow one of the extras Clay always adds to my handle. ;)
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:53am monica:

Fri. 11/30/12 11:53am Brian in UK:

Great set Doug, you've passed the audition.
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:53am kat330:

@Brian: :) The only cooking I'll outright boast about is my roast fowl, especially since we've had an herb garden. Tender and savory with capitals T and S.
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:54am Uncle Michael:

Doug, thanks so much for the music and for giving me a place to hang out with music and turkey nerds.
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 11:54am Doug Schulkind:

Hey Monica!
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:54am ndbob:

Indeed Monica!
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:54am kat330:

@UM: I found your 10:14 post about food. USUALLY this group (and all playlists) have some "food porn" posts peppered throughout. Guess everyone here is feeling sated today. :)
Avatar Fri. 11/30/12 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

The pleasure is sublimely mine, Uncle Michael. Nerds, turkeys and drumheads forever!
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:56am Fiveash:

Nice one Doug. So many great album cuts in Aretha's Atlantic catalog.

Solomon Burke gave this number a spin, but I'll take the original.
Fri. 11/30/12 11:58am Van in DC:

Much enjoyment, great show, happy happy, all set for rest of day. THANKS DOUG!
Fri. 11/30/12 11:58am Van in DC:

This show was as solid as that drum set, I daresay.
  Fri. 11/30/12 11:59am Uncle Michael:

I'm getting hip to Fame...the Candi Staton compilation is excellent.
