Artie:

So early.
Avatar 11:46am
tonyc:

Wow, you are early, Artie! Hope you packed a sleeping bag.
  11:52am
US BLUES:

hi Tony,
gonna be a trippy show today?
Avatar 11:53am
tonyc:

Hullo dere. I'm on in 7 minutes with a psych-y all-singles show. As many of you will have heard, we've had to extend the silent marathon due to extensive damage to station equipment and our transmitter sites, as well as the forced cancellation of our annual record fair. So, on this election day, remember to vote WFMU!
Avatar 11:54am
tonyc:

@ US Blues: Yep, it will be -- tho it'll take an hour or so before we start peaking. I'll be warming up with some poppier things and some goofiness.
Avatar 12:00pm
tonyc:

So, I'm very glad to be back after two weeks! Many thanks to Rich Lindsay for filling in two weeks ago -- and no thanks to Sandy for "filling in" last week.
  12:02pm
Ricardo Montalban:

hello Tony!
Sorry you didn't get to be on last week. Seems though WFMU stepped up from their kitchens admirably throughout the storm, though.
  12:02pm
listener james from westwood:

good morning, tony, and howdy all! happy to be in the singles stream!
  12:03pm
US BLUES:

WHAT'S THE NAME OF THAT Sandy Bull - album - is it disaster demolition?
eh you have just gone silent?
  12:03pm
Ricardo Montalban:

God! This is an awesome track!
  12:04pm
US BLUES:

come back on now again!
Avatar 12:04pm
tonyc:

@ US Blues: Haven't gone silent -- but there do seem to be buffering problems. I'm on now. Hello James & Ricardo!!
  12:05pm
US BLUES:

thanks to Ric for your horror show!
Avatar 12:07pm
tonyc:

Remember: Play the music loud and vote WFMU!!
  12:07pm
US BLUES:

love this Brigman track - hello Jimi sound!
  12:08pm
Brian in UK:

Hello Tony.
@US BLUES what does 'e pluribus unum' mean?
  12:09pm
Ricardo Montalban:

@US Blues: Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks to Tony for letting me house-sit the show. It was loads of fun!
  12:10pm
US BLUES:

out of many one - does it have something to do with the electric prunes or Iron Butterfly?
  12:11pm
listener james from westwood:

stream's steady now. nothing beats the drummer! (is that a paradox?)
  12:12pm
US BLUES:

Brian - 'nemo dat quad non habet'
Avatar 12:15pm
tonyc:

A delayed hola to you, Brian in the U.K.!
  12:15pm
Manuel de Bruselandia:

Hi everybody, hola Tony!
Avatar 12:16pm
tonyc:

Greetings, Manuel!!
  12:17pm
US BLUES:

Tony, still waiting for your British Psyche singles show - nuggets an all!
  12:18pm
Brian in UK:

@US BLUES it is the title of a Sandy Bull album I once owned.
  12:18pm
Manuel de Bruselandia:

Tony Do you think I can hear me growing during today's show?
  12:18pm
US BLUES:

eh that should be rubble not nuggets!
  12:20pm
Brian in UK:

@Manuel I can hear the grass grow if that is any help.
Avatar 12:20pm
tonyc:

@ U.S. Blues: Good idea, but I'm much weaker on U.K. psych singles than U.S.ones (if you're talking actual singles, rather than comp tracks). Your head it floating away like a balloon!
@ Manuel: That question shows your consciousness has already expanded!
  12:21pm
Brian in UK:

Tony I believe there was an English group called The Cryin' Shames.
Avatar 12:21pm
tonyc:

Er, Manuel's head is the floating one...
  12:22pm
US BLUES:

Brian,
more to do with the great Grateful Dead track off their 1974 album - wake of the flood and the opening track of the Grateful Dead movie.
Avatar 12:29pm
tonyc:

@ Brian: Don't know the U.K. Cryan' Shames. In some cases, there are 5 or 6 sixties bands with the same name -- it can be hard to sort them all out!
  12:29pm
US BLUES:

great stuff - reminiscient of the best of George Harrison/John Lennon
Avatar 12:31pm
tonyc:

Glad you like it. I saw him live in Portland last year (or the year before) -- he's still great.
  12:32pm
Carmichael:

Hey Tony, how ya's? This is my favorite genre, at least today.
Avatar 12:32pm
tonyc:

Talking of bands with the same name: I'm not sure whether the Coven on now is the same band that recorded "Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls" -- doesn't sound like it!
Avatar 12:33pm
tonyc:

Hey, Carmichael!!
  12:35pm
Carmichael:

I have a Cryan Shames song hiding in my iPod. Didn't know I had a choice of which Cryan Shames.
Avatar 12:36pm
tonyc:

Sorry to kill the buzz, but: no one's pledging. A pledge in time saves nine -- or something like that. Let's get my (reset) pledge ticker off and running. (Many, many thanks to everyone that helped me reach 100 percent last month.)
  12:36pm
US BLUES:

yeh Carmichael,
Found 9 hours of Italian prog rock more challenging!
  12:38pm
Carmichael:

I have to wait until payday (Friday), but I'd gladly fling some dubloons your way.
  12:38pm
US BLUES:

most famous band with same name (at least from this era):
Kaleidoscope
Avatar 12:39pm
tonyc:

Thanks so much, Carmichael!!!
Avatar 12:40pm
tonyc:

The funny thing about bands called Kaleidoscope is that they're all really good (including the Mexican band).
  12:42pm
US BLUES:

its kind of an intrinsicly psychedelic name/object
Avatar 12:43pm
tonyc:

I had one when I was a kid. Are they still a common kid's toy?
Avatar 12:44pm
tonyc:

Hurray!!! Thanks for the pledge 0-person-I-will-be-thanking-in-a-minute!
  12:45pm
US BLUES:

don't see them now although some of those real player graphics as the music plays looks like it was based on it
Avatar 12:45pm
tonyc:

Thanks, Rich!!!!
  12:45pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I liked this weird series of books where you followed a path throughout it with a small kaleidoscope. I recently found one of them again.
  12:46pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I'm one of the 1%!
Avatar 12:46pm
tonyc:

You are a ruler of the world!
  12:48pm
Doug S.:

Whew! Lincoln and I are home just now from four hours and get-out-the-vote-ing. Yay Tony!
  12:49pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Hey, folks! Fling some sheckels WFMU and Tony's way, if you can.
To paraphrase Freewheelin' Franklin: "WFMU will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no WFMU."
And WFMU could use the help now.
Avatar 12:49pm
tonyc:

Yay Doug! You were drumming up votes for Lincoln? Didn't know he was on the ballot.
  12:55pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Is that THE Joey Welz? The guy's still at it, apparently.
  12:57pm
listener james from westwood:

doug, was much of that time spent in line to actually vote? friends in miami say the lines there are mammoth. hope everyone is counted....

tony, this first hour has been wonderful.
Avatar 12:57pm
tonyc:

It is!
Avatar 12:58pm
tonyc:

Be sure not to miss the lyrics in the next track...
Avatar 12:58pm
tonyc:

Meaning, this track!
  12:59pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I wonder if Jello Biafra has this single.
Avatar 1:00pm
tonyc:

@ Listener James: Thanks much! Glad you've been enjoying it....
  1:02pm
Ricardo Montalban:

We've had vote by mail for the last couple of years here in Washington state and it seems pretty easy. Not sure what the potential drawbacks are and why more states don't do it. I am sure there's a good reason, I'm just not that sure what it is.
Avatar 1:06pm
tonyc:

In Finland, where I just was, non-citizens can not only vote after a very short period of residence, they can run for office.
  1:07pm
listener james from westwood:

i trust the mail more than i do the repubs trying to glitch the deal in oh, pa, and fl, or the crappy voting machines since bush v gore.
Avatar 1:09pm
tonyc:

This Knack is not the "My Sharona" Knack, of course (talking of bands with the same name).
  1:11pm
Doug S.:

@Listener James FW
No. We voted in a matter of minutes (though the people in another precinct at our polling place had a much longer wait). Lincoln and I were out knocking on doors and reminding people to vote. The Obama campaign had specific addresses targeted where they new Obama supporters lived. It was an impressive bit of micro-organizing.
Avatar 1:12pm
tonyc:

Buffering ... buffering .... Is everybody there?
  1:13pm
Ricardo Montalban:

It's all buffy, but it comes right back. It's internet radio. We're adaptable.
  1:14pm
Brian in UK:

Two Knacks makes a pair of Knackers. (Bollocks over here)
Someone had to lower the tone at a serious time like this.
Avatar 1:17pm
tonyc:

Ha!
  1:21pm
Brian in UK:

Ahmet Ertegun let that one go. Phew.
Avatar 1:23pm
tonyc:

We've heard from the 1% -- it's time for the 99% to speak up. Let's get some pledges for FMU, Give the Drummer Radio, and this show!
  1:23pm
listener james from westwood:

doug, good to hear. lincoln is growing up right. and hope the obama organization gets it done. i've gotten a bunch of calls from cory booker urging me to get out, and one from bill clinton reminding me to vote for sen bob menendez, so that might be part of the micro-effort.
  1:24pm
listener james from westwood:

brian, just as long as we're not headed for the knackers' yard!
  1:28pm
Brian in UK:

No james that's us!!
Avatar 1:28pm
tonyc:

Yay! A pledge came in! Many, many thanks, Jeremy!
  1:33pm
Jeremy:

Many more thanks to you Tony! Due to the cancellation of the record fair, I have a bit of extra scratch to help prop up the station! And give props to my fave DJ!
Avatar 1:36pm
tonyc:

I guess that is one good side to the fair being cancelled!
  1:36pm
Doug S.:

Tony, remember that you can check the marathon console to see who's pledged!
Avatar 1:36pm
tonyc:

Another pledge!! Thanks so much, Brian!!!
Avatar 1:37pm

I'm-a-checkin', Doug!
Avatar 1:41pm

"Take no care -- don't comb your hair." I like that advice.

US BLUES:

Tony,
should clean your vinyl before playing them - Carpets a bit slippy there!
Avatar 1:57pm
tonyc:

Some of these are scratched/worn to hell -- nothing I can do about that!
  1:59pm
US BLUES:

got to be David Bowie - China Girl opening chords?
Avatar 2:02pm
tonyc:

Plus, a lot of these singles -- particularly the small-label ones -- were horribly pressed and recorded. Goes with the territory.
  2:05pm
US BLUES:

not called garage for nothing - especially when you compare to soemthing like Rockabilly recordings of ten years earlier. How come they sound so pristine and perfect compared to the muddy sound of many 60s records?
  2:06pm
Uncle Michael:

I just got here and something lept off the playlist at me...is that Froggy Beaver from Omaha?
Avatar 2:07pm
tonyc:

@ Uncle Michael: yep, it is! Tho on their LP they spell it Froggie Beaver.
  2:08pm
Uncle Michael:

I need to track that down. I saw that band back around that time. Wow.
Avatar 2:11pm
tonyc:

Interesting! What were they like live?
  2:12pm
US BLUES:

wonderful show Tony, going off now and sorry I could'nt pledge anything, been unemployed for a couple of years now and things are a bit tight.
Till next time - all the best!
  2:13pm
Uncle Michael:

I was about 13. I went with my dad to see them play free in a park. We joked about there name for years. I want to hear what they sounded like because I don't remember!

Tony this is not counted as a tape hiss show is it? it will be archived?
Avatar 2:22pm

I remember Kenneth Anger also changing the soundtrack of his movie Rabbit's Moon.

Honor to see you here, Sir OvO.
Avatar 2:30pm
tonyc:

Would love some more pledges during the last hour of today's show. Has been pretty slow and I don't want to let the team down.

Also, future archive listeners: I'm looking at you.
  2:37pm
Uncle Michael:

Tony, I hate to have to make excuses but I've pledged twice. I wouldn't sit here and enjoy your music...you with your hat held out, without kicking in to WFMU. Now, the rest of you deadbeats...
Avatar 2:40pm
tonyc:

Thanks, Michael! Same story for most of the commenters, I'm afraid, now that we're more than a month into the marathon. I need fresh blood! But I also want you all to enjoy the music guilt-free, everybody, whether or not you can pledge.
Avatar 2:43pm
tonyc:

But please do pledge. (How's that for a mixed message?)
Avatar 2:45pm

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
There will be no Kaminsky Kamoutsky this evening. We are still EFFORTING to get Give the Drummer Some live on the stream at 6pm. The piece of equipment at WFMU that I use to remotely connect to the stream got fried during Hurricane Sandy and the ability to implement a workaround procedure is not yet confirmed. Keep your ears tuned to the Drummer Stream!

Uncle Michael:

Good luck, Doug!
Avatar 2:52pm

Yes, Doug -- good luck! Sorry for spreading misinformation just then....
Avatar 2:56pm

Thanks for listening everybody! Hope you enjoyed the show despite dropouts and crap-o-phonic sound. See you next week!
