  8:03am duke:

Morning Doug and Drummers. I just got the sad news via a tweet from Destination Out that David S. Ware had passed away. He'll be missed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05am Doug Schulkind:

One imagines that right about now, David S. Ware and John Tchicai are playing a mean game of dominoes on a nice cloud somewhere.
  8:25am duke:

Wasn't there a song about in heaven they must have a hell of a band? Ware, Tchicai, Sam Rivers and all of the other giants who have passed away recently could make one hell of a heavenly noise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36am Doug Schulkind:

If all them angels think they're going to be getting a ton of sleep up there—surprise!
  8:51am texas scott:

happy to be able to tune in this a.m.,DrumMeister.
you had me at weed smokers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53am Doug Schulkind:

Texas Scott! So glad you're here!
  8:53am Brian in UK:

Arternoon gents. One toke over the line? Are you allowed to smoke in heaven or is there a special room designated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54am Doug Schulkind:

Afternoon, Brian in UK! There is no no-smoking edict in heaven. There are no LUNGS in heaven!
  8:56am Jeff G:

Not gonna lie: the losses in the music world this year are a big fat DRAG.
  8:57am Jeff G:

Oh, and hi, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58am Doug Schulkind:

Hiya DJ Jazzy Jeff G. (OK, I will never say that again.) I just learned from Hugo in Norway that Sean Bergin passed away in September. Fuck!
  8:58am Jeff G:

Ware memorial broadcast today starts at noon over at WKCR: http://bit.ly/Ue6xpQ
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am Doug Schulkind:

I Bitly'd your URL, JG.
  9:03am Jeff G:

I thought a felt a little tweak.
  9:04am Jeff G:

Bergin too? Geez. Actually have him cued up for Monday, coincidentally.
  9:04am Aurélie:

I was just listening to David Ware just over a week ago (I'm listening to my 'Ws', up to the Wedding Present right now)
I knew David Ware was ill for quite a while, but it still really sucksssss
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

Always a blessing to have your presence, Aurélie! And you, too, northguineahills.
  9:15am Brian in UK:

Come on folks lets look at what these good people left behind; without that you would not be having this dialogue. Look upwards.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

I bet you're all a bit peeved that I didn't play the flipside of this record "Smoked Meat Blues."
  9:19am George BRISTOL UK:

I was very struck by the vocal rhythm in Barack Obama's speech in Grant Park Chicago on 4th November 2008, especially the final 40 seconds. Shortly after I produced a 4' 23" piece mixing those 40 seconds with the opening section of David S Wares "Aquarian Sound". [I've just attached it to an e-mail to you. Have a listen.]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks George! I will give a listen after the show. What you describe sounds reminiscent of John Coltrane's patterning of his intonation and cadence on "Alabama" from Martin Luther King, Jr's eulogy speech for the four girls killed in the Birmingham church bombing.
  9:25am George BRISTOL UK:

Yes, Doug. Exactly what I thought when you played "Alabama" last year / whenever.
  9:26am Aurélie:

wowwwwwwwwwww I love this one
  9:28am ndbob:

ah the great Luis Russell!
  9:37am northguineahills:

Anyone remember the Janet Jackson/Cab Calloway 'collaboration'?
  9:38am holland oats:

mornin' drumma - thank you for being you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Doug Schulkind:

I'm glad you're you, holland oats.
  9:39am lewis:

greetings all from Minneapolis where it is finally raining, or at least there is enough moisture in the air to get everything wet.
  9:42am ndbob:

Two solid days of rain here in North Dakota
  9:42am ?:

wow, Jesse Fortune sounds to me a lot like Sam Cooke
  9:43am lewis:

@ndbob - yeah we are getting your leftovers and it looks like you all were hungry...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Doug Schulkind:

Hey there lewis!
  9:48am lewis:

@Doug - my daughter says that fall is going along just fine in Pittsburgh
  9:48am Aurélie:

oh my godness, merci pour cette chason Doug !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

Would dearly LOVE to see some action on the old pledg-O-meter, above. My fundraising goal is more than five times the goal of the other Drummer Stream shows. I guess when you're "the man," you get the burden. It's a burden I bear joyfully, though a little help would go a long way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

Mon plaisir, Aurélie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

@Lewis
So far so good. At least the stinkbug infestation is way way down compared to last year.
  9:53am GeoffD:

All that twangy guitar has caused me to pledge :)
  9:54am Personal Manager:

This set making it less grey today...still raining tho
  9:55am holland oats:

raining here too - somebody plz walk my dog
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

PLEDGE ALERT...PLEDGE ALERT...
Listener Frank in Staten Island, and listener Geoff D in Plantation, FLA have both stepped up to the plate and crushed it. Thanks gents!
  9:56am Jeff G:

I'll walk your dog, holland oats, if you dust my broom.
  9:56am ?:

"give me back that wig I bought you, and let that head go bald . . ." Doug, I think Pee Wee just earned my pledge
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Doug Schulkind:

When I was feeling out that Pee Wee track last night, I was thinking it was kinda slow until that line about "going downtown to buy some hair" really perked it up.
  10:01am holland oats:

@jeff the sky is crying!
  10:02am Jeff G:

...and I found a bird nest on the ground.
  10:02am northguineahills:

I used to drive through Plantation on my way to my ex's parents in Ft Lauderdale. Curiously, it abuts Davie, which is a world away from Plantation (Davie is the redneck capital of SoFla.) I have some curious stories about Davie....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Doug Schulkind:

PLEDGE ALERT...PLEDGE ALERT...
Listener Graham in Dobbs Ferry, has pumped us up to the 40% level. Thanks Graham!!
  10:10am Jeff G:

So riveted by today's show I forgot to make/drink coffee. Then the headache started to drift in...back in a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Doug Schulkind:

Jeff G, if you had just ingested the program intravenously, this would never have happened.
  10:14am Jeff G:

That's in fmu app 3.0...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Doug Schulkind:

Funny. When I get Facebook IM'd, the bleep goes out over the air. Didja hear that?!
  10:17am holland oats:

heh yeppers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

One pledge of a hundred clams will get us to virtually $1,000. That's a gorgeously round number. Anyone willing to make it happen? Don't be a square! Make it round!
  10:18am northguineahills:

yeah, Doug, I checked my Facebook tab, and was rather confused .... (i'm usually confused, anyways)....
  10:19am ndbob:

lovely music here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Doug Schulkind:

Crazy Pavlovian radio!
  10:23am duke:

Wow Joyce, just wow!
  10:24am Jeff G:

So THAT'S what that sound was. I'm over here doing the computer version of looking under piles of clothes and bedding for the source of the ringing...

Meanwhile, someone had a lot of fun with the panning controls on this tune.
  10:26am northguineahills:

Drummer stream is borked.... (wfmu is fine)
  10:27am northguineahills:

ok, it's back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Doug Schulkind:

Anyone else lose the stream?? I've had a steady connection on this end.
  10:31am holland oats:

"Not I," said the Duck. "Not I," said the Cat. "Not I," said the Dog.
  10:32am Alex in Illinois:

My connection is been 100% steady too this time. I guess the gremlin that used to bother me fled to the North Guinea Hills
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning to you Alex! And to you, too, Gremlin.
  10:34am duke:

Loud and clear here. Roger Wilco.
  10:35am Aurélie:

@Doug: My connecion is ok here in New-Caledonia!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Doug Schulkind:

Good to know there are no problems. Prolly just a rebuffering hiccup in the Hills of North Guinea.
  10:39am northguineahills:

New Caledonia just beat the Solomon Islands 5-0 in WC qualifying (i'm a football/soccer nerd amongst other nerdalities)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

  10:42am Aurélie:

I didnt even know that :') So much love & mana to you from my mountains,u North Guinea
  10:44am Holly in NC:

Responding to Doug @ 9:17 - Yes I am VERY sorry you didn't play 'Smoked Meat Blues'
Glad to hear smoking's allowed in heaven - if that's where I end up the first thing I'm going to do is light up (heading towards 4 years smoke free after longterm 2 pack day habit, I still greedily inhale 2nd hand smoke at any opportunity) ;-)
Off to care for 95 year old woman who doesn't smoke, but whose pantry consists of little but smoked & potted meats...
  10:45am seang:

sweet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

Smoked meats are allowed in Heaven, but only on Fridays.

Hi seang.
  10:47am seang:

Hi Doug, thanks for the tunes and trumpets
  10:49am northguineahills:

The last Tom Ze album I picked up was from '98...

A Vashti classic!

Merci beaucoup, Aurélie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Doug Schulkind:

I just haul 'em up the mountain, seang. The tunes jump off and fly on their own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

Just now I was Googling for current info on Don Everly and I came upon a bizarre site that anticipates celebrity deaths. It appears to be "predicting" Everly's death

on October 20, 2012

Creepy and fucked up.

en.necropedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of creepy and fucked up: Anita Bryant.

In her Wikipedia entry:

"In a 1980 Ladies Home Journal interview, following her divorce and in the aftermath of her anti-gay activism, Bryant commented on her anti-gay views and said, "I'm more inclined to say live and let live, just don't flaunt it or try to legalize it."[14] However, the biography page on her Anita Bryant Ministries website (written in 2006) continues to defend her earlier anti-gay activism and views."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Doug Schulkind:

Forgot to say hey, Holly in NC. Hey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Doug Schulkind:

We're still sitting just a couple bucks under $900. I would really really love to get to 50% by the end of today's show. That means we've got an hour to raise $202.

Can it be done? Will you help make it happen?

Turn my ?s into !s
  11:10am Paul Sherratt:

I don't remember telling anyone that I went to see Searching For Sugarman, on Tuesday ...
  11:11am duke:

I saw an eponymous at the zoo.
  11:14am ndbob:

anyone ever hear Anita's version of the Phil Ochs song "The Power and the Glory"?
  11:15am Brian in UK:

Scott is playing some David Ware.
@duke what's the eponymous' name?
@Paul did you get to see herself?
  11:15am Hugo:

The movie is showing here at a film festival. I was just recommended by one colleague to go see it.
  11:19am Hugo:

Gay compilations? Check this one:

http://bit.ly/S1LMsT
  11:21am Paul Sherratt:

The film is a must see, Hugo. Brian, yes, thanks to you had a great old time with the mighty Mary G.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

Hello my friend, Paul Sherratt. Having you here listening is like breathing with a third lung.
  11:26am Hugo:

Paul, I found out that Mary G. was doing the largest and the third largest city on this trip, but not the second largest. Too bad. Next time, then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

What vital organ would each of you like to represent in the body Drummer Some??
  11:27am Brian in UK:

@Paul hoping to see The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble on Sunday. Maybe Sam Baker next week, he seems to be a stranger to this show!
  11:29am Hugo:

The semicolon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

The Semi Colon from Nigeria: bit.ly...
  11:30am seang:

nice bounce to this track
  11:31am duke:

@Doug - what's the eponymous' name?
E. Ponymous
  11:33am Paul Sherratt:

Doug, work etc has turned me in to a listening lurker in the last few weeks. Just got in to hear Rodriguez ! Unbelievable.
Hugo, Mary was also playing one of your high security prisons ... Brian thanks for the Hypnotic tip - are they busking any Underground stations do you know ?
  11:33am Brian in UK:

Spleeeeeen.
On 7th October this year Hildegard of Bingen was named a Doctor of the Church (Sainted) by the Pope. She wrote some beautiful choral work; 11000 Virgins is a belter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Doug Schulkind:

And don't forget the Nigerian band Question Mark: bit.ly...
  11:36am Jeff G:

I'll take the hippo campus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Doug Schulkind:

Will you be staying in a dorm at hippo campus?
  11:37am Jeff G:

Gotta fly, but hope to see some of you on the flip. Those of you that tune in to the D:O Radio, it's a new show on Monday, as Doug mentioned. It's our 25th show, so we have a thing planned.
  11:38am Jeff G:

I'm not sure a dorm will be big enough. Maybe I could stay in the pituitary-g land.
  11:39am Hugo:

Whaddyaknow? Just checked the net and saw that someone has recorded the entire Mary G. show in Oslo (not in a prison). That is some consolation. Gigging with Ben Glover. Any info on him?
  11:42am Jeff G:

It's alimentary, my canal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

PLEDGE ALERT...PLEDGE ALERT...
Listener Rey from Glenview, Ill has blasted us to the 46% mark. THANK you Rey. $82 will get us to a heavy-duty 50%.
  11:43am Brian in UK:

Ben Glover is Irish has co written some songs with Mary. They sing a couple of numbers at the end but there is no harmony going on. Shame. Good songs but I was not knocked out by them. He has recorded three albums in Nahville, new one just out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

Has there ever been a better song title in the entire human history of song titles than

"It's an Uphill Climb to the Bottom"

I didn't think so.
  11:45am Brian in UK:

Great title bit like 'Were You Lying Down When You Stood Me Up'

  9:53am Doug:

I'm not only new but I'm dumb, so someone please explain where I missed the names of the drummers on each tune. Thanks.
  10:35am Doug Schulkind:

Doug, I'd like to think of you as more gnu and than new. This program is open to all of God's furry and snorty creatures. Welcome!
  8:40am Van in DC:

The great thing about the archive listening experience - you don't have to haul them back up to the mountain. They've already jumped and are still flying strong. In essence, they re-reverberate their awesomeness to a whole new day, a whole new audience, and like a Phoenix, are reborn to enjoy the beauty of enlightening and entertaining ever more.

Or something like that.
  8:58am Doug Schulkind:

"Re-reverberate" is my new favorite word.
  12:04pm Van in DC:

You've done it again Doug. Always an education for me on your show. Vashti Bunyon...who knew? Quite a story she has. Thank you for the wonderful show (so far, still listening off and on today) :)
  12:06pm Doug Schulkind:

Better a Bunyon in your ear than a bunion on your toe. As I've always said.
