A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

I wouldn't recommend it. My daughter loves it. Its tolerable for what it is (I've seen worse kids shows). Was just curious is it was a popular thing in Australia...like how iCarly is here.

I saw Joe Bataan play in Toronto a few years ago. It was a gorgeous summer night by the water. He was charming. His wife was on stage with him. He introduced her as his ball-and-chain. Regardless, he was charming and the music was super sweet hot.

Hi Trouble, can you ask "why out of 10,000 CD titles, the 2 most difficult for me to have found were Ray Barretto's "Charanga Moderno" and Celia Cruz/Johnny Pacheco's "Celia and Johnny." WHY are these two GREAT albums almost impossible to find on CD? Just wondering if he knew. Thanks!

Hi Trouble and guests! I did some reading up on Mr. Averne a year or so ago. Fascinating guy! My question: how did you like Terry Riley's use of You're No Good (great song, by the way) in his work of the same name? And was that the first sampled song ever?

Love Goes... is one of the reasons along with a BBC doc I saw recently as to why I have been so obsessed with NYC latin music lately.
|
Tue. 10/9/12 11:38am
Cecile:
joe ,if you are truly obsessed, Stereo Review wrote reams on Fania records and even did a feature or two. Their coverage in the 70s was very good, and you may still be able to find old issues cheap.

Weren't Panamanians also a large early Latin community in New York?

@Cecile cool thanks I will have to check that out. I've just been kind of shooting in the dark on stuff so some background would be great.

Tue. 10/9/12 11:44am
Cecile:
No problem, joe. That Will Hermes book was the first places besides that magazine that really put all the different threads together - he did it after the fact, they were doing it as it happened. I remember being amazed as a teenager reading that people actually had shrines to Celia Cruz because she was so loved.

We just had willie colon in the studio a few weeks ago. Its worth mentioning that of all the different types of musical groups we have that range from hip hop to broadway/orchestras to rock, Salsa is by FAR the loudest by many decibels...even when they aren't mic'd up.
