Happy Birthday, Yusef Lateef! The Universe sings in glory...

Unfortunately I have to leave in a few minutes and can't catch this live, so I'll just have to "make like Van" and return to the Archive afterwards! ;)
  5:50pm Matt from Springfield:

I can, however, help you move your turntables and DJ equip into the party a while. Do you have a sound system hooked up? Or are *you* a Sound system?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Doug S.:

Hell no, Matt, I need you to — yes, carry the records.
  5:53pm Matt from Springfield:

No prob. Here...you go. Arranged alphabetically by length. But, I don't think that's the order you're playing them in...
  5:54pm listener james from westwood:

living proof that loving what you do can add years to your life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm Doug Schulkind:

From your lips to God's ears (and my blood pressure), LJFW!
  5:56pm Matt from Springfield:

Hey LJFW! Enjoy the festivities, everyone! I'll return in the time machine to join you all, so you shouldn't notice anything different!
  5:57pm ndbob:

evening doug, matt , james
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Hi there ndbob!
  6:00pm listener james from westwood:

indeed. this is why i fully expect fmu djs to be an unstoppable race of centenarians.
evening everyone! matt, while you're in the time machine, can you scare up the score for the next few super bowls? i'll totally put a bet down for you in vegas.
  6:02pm Carmichael:

Hiya Doug. Just made it to Yusef's big bash.
  6:03pm duke:

Happy birthday Yusef!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Howdy Carmichael! Greetings Duke! So glad you both made it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Doug Schulkind:

I would love it if someone would give the old pledge thermometer a tickle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Doug Schulkind:

Help out a scuffling DJ and make pledge. Imagine you are in a piano bar. I am pounding the ivories into submission and you are exceedingly drunk.

Tip jar = above
  6:20pm duke:

The Blue Yusef Lateef was one of the first records I ever bought, age maybe 14. I had no idea who Yusef Lateef was, but one listen was enough to blow me away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Doug Schulkind:

The Blew Yusef Lateef.
  6:33pm Carmichael:

I bought an album that had a paper sleeve with pictures of other LPs in their catalog. One of them was The Diverse Yusef Lateef. That was the 1st time I had heard of him, and I quickly resolved to actually hear him.
  6:34pm listener james from westwood:

if that hair-raising moan/squawk isn't worth a pledge, then i'm no longer sure of anything in this world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Doug Schulkind:

Easily the greatest music thrill of my entire life was having Yusef's long-time producer, the legendary Joel Dorn, say in the liner notes to a reissue box set:

"...I met a guy named Doug Schulkind who, near as I can tell, is the world's leading authority on the recordings of Yusef Lateef. We talked for the better part of an hour about Yusef's records, and I must tell you it was one of the most satisfying conversations I've ever had concerning records that I produced. To know that someone was so moved by the records that meant so much to Yusef and me was very heartening indeed."
  6:36pm listener james from westwood:

holy crap, that is awesome. you belong to the ages!
  6:36pm ndbob:

that's great Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Doug Schulkind:

Joel Dorn first sent me a set of the liners back in about '94 and I haven't landed yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Doug Schulkind:

That's Whitney Houston's mamma, Cissy, on backing vocals, by the way.
  6:44pm ndbob:

of all the idiots in Congress, this guy wins the prize

it's mutants like that that make you wonder if folks like paul wellstone or bernie sanders were or are just rumors, or illusions conjured by desperate hope for things to be different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Doug Schulkind:

May this poor animal from Arkansas receive his own personal blessings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Doug Schulkind:

Vocals here, as on "I Be Cold," are by the Sweet Inspirations (including Cissy Houston).
  6:53pm ndbob:

the sweet inspirations were great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Doug Schulkind:

One. Just one. A single solitary. Pledge. In honor of beauty and sincerity. In honor of Yusef. In honor of a life-long devotion. Just one?
  6:56pm Holly in NC:

Doug, I love you, I love Yusef, but in your piano bar I'm the gal who lost her purse at the grocery store & is nursing one loooog, sloow drink courtesy of the barkeep's largesse. Lunchbox & I apologize. xo

Lunchbox says pledge, y'all!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Doug Schulkind:

Just keep tapping your foot, Holly dear! I'll call you a cab when I get off my shift.

Forgot to check in. Busy w/ another resume/application.
  7:00pm listener james from westwood:

i'm in. happy birthday, yusef. see you at 100 and beyond.
  11:58am Matt from Springfield:

Whew! That was an amazing party, glad I could enjoy that with you all thanks to the time machine!

Totally agree LJFW: Yusef will never fade, past present and future, he is an amazing, wonderful force. I'm glad to hear such a range of "Autophysiopsychic" delights today--"jazz" is underwhelming, Yusef's style encompasses so many forms of music that it is simply vibrant, vivacious and on the good side of "out there"! I also think that's a lovely choice of photo for the playlist.
  11:59am Doug Schulkind:

Hey Matt! Glad you made it. I saved you a slice cake, but my cat licked off all the icing.
  12:03pm Matt from Springfield:

And thank you, Bro. Doug, for your devoted living tributes to Bro. Yusef. Joel Dorn's got it right, you may be the most appreciative Yusef Lateef fan on Earth! I always enjoy reading your story about seeing him in concert and meeting him--how beautiful to meet and experience one of your inspirations like that! Thanks for spreading his wonderful music to new fans like myself.
  12:04pm Doug Schulkind:

Yeah! (at high volume)
  12:06pm Matt from Springfield:

And thank you Doug! I see the outline of the icing has the "f" in "Lateef", and a bit of the second e but NOT the first! That's the best possible slice!

I'd better round this off with a healthier lunch and a healthy Scenario. Started listening now, but I'll see ya on those comments shortly!
