  11:15am kat330:

Hello, Charlie, and all BDN's to come! Hm, today's theme is very interest-ink...
  11:35am listener james from westwood:

not to be confused with the frangry show!
  11:36am listener james from westwood:

good thursday, kat, and early welcome to all those who are still driving to campus. charlie's school of doing nothing will be in session soon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am charlie:

This show can be angry so you don't have to be!
  11:44am listener james from westwood:

the show that is as mad as hell, and is not gonna take this anymore!
  11:52am Kat O:

Grrrr! Angry that I will miss this week's show. Blow off that steam, gang! Catch you in the archives, Charlie!
  11:53am kat330:

Hi, James! Hi and bye, Katya!
  11:54am Michael:

Hiya charlie and listeners.
  11:58am ndbob:

heya Charlie, Kat, James, Michael, everyone
  11:58am kat330:

Hi, Bob!
  12:00pm ndbob:

a little bit of snow here last night and this morning - more nearby
  12:00pm kat330:

As long as the indignation *is* righteous.

We, the citizens of Righteous Indig Nation!
  12:01pm listener james from westwood:

"there will be strong language, so make sure the kiddies are listening" gave me today's first big laugh.
  12:01pm Carmichael:

Good day, Charles. Good day, everyone.
  12:01pm listener james from westwood:

howdy all! ndbob, did you hear about the weather channel's plan to name winter storms?
  12:02pm ndbob:

@James Yep I did - wonder if it will catch on
  12:03pm kat330:

@Bob: Yes, all the weather heads around here are giving us dire warnings about the big change headed our way this weekend. Today, OTOH, is a brilliant, beautiful, Indian summer day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm charlie:

Y'all are talking about the Weather Underground, right?
  12:06pm listener james from westwood:

gloomy, rainy, and warm today in northern nj. but tomorrow proves to be a class-outside type of day.
  12:07pm kat330:

Yeah, this dude sounds really outraged.
  12:07pm kat330:

Guess he's standing up for Robot Nation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm charlie:

The bits are restless.
  12:08pm ndbob:

@kat Looking ahead, this seems to be the worst weather for October - but we will see
  12:09pm Carmichael:

386DX. The mid-range solution to the limits of the 286 processor, just before the Pentium 1 was invented. Aahh, the good old days.
  12:09pm listener james from westwood:

i think he (it?) covers "smells like teen spirit." so he's got generational angst down.
  12:10pm kat330:

We'll be going from highs of 80 today and tomorrow to a high of 50 on Sunday.
  12:10pm Carmichael:

Yay, the Fugs! Strafe them commie geeks!
  12:12pm Carmichael:

Gook creeps. I was close ....
  12:14pm kat330:

Yes, I well-remember the 286 and 386 days. Started on an Apple -- C+ maybe? -- and moved to an '85 IBM PC, then a TRS-80 for BBS sysoping, u.s.w. Over 27 years of this online canoodling. :)
  12:14pm Gary Mitchell:

"the most exciting woman on earth" Orson Welles called her.

eartha kitt. giggity giggity.
  12:14pm kat330:

Catwoman gets typecast.
  12:15pm Gary Mitchell:

nice "rebel without a cause" drop
  12:15pm Carmichael:

@kat: did the TRS-80 have the cassette deck tape drive? I believed I had one of those, using it as a word processor way before WordStar.
  12:16pm ndbob:

Heya Gary!
  12:17pm Gary Mitchell:

yo nd
  12:18pm Gary Mitchell:

now that I think of it, that drop was Brando from The Wild One
  12:19pm kat330:

@Carm: That's the computer I remember the least about. It was brought into the home by my ex who used a couple of the TRS-80s for his Brooklyn bulletin board, then for our L.A. "Muse Ink" board. I sure recall that square screen and the big, bright green typeface.
  12:20pm Carmichael:

Our 1st sub-95 degree day here in NorCal in nearly 2 weeks. Autumn finally is here.
  12:20pm still b/p:

I just left Eddie Fisher singing Dungaree Doll to listen here instead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm charlie:

A warm and personal greeting to each and every one of you!
  12:22pm kat330:

We had those 95s for way more than 2 weeks this past summer -- seemed like for 2 months straight.
  12:23pm kat330:

What's the weather by you, Charlie?
  12:23pm ndbob:

@Gary each graduating senior had a full page in our HS yearbook - someone posted a picture of Brando with that quote
  12:23pm don:

this aint no whack radio station! personal greetings back at ya, charlie!
  12:25pm Carmichael:

@kat: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRS-80

Yes, the "Trash 80" had a cassette drive. Yikes, that was a long time ago.
  12:26pm kat330:

And here I thought today's theme would result in women being underrepresented. ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm charlie:

Hard rain, Kat330!
  12:28pm kat330:

Thanks for the link! So that slot's for a cassette and not just a floppy disc? I'm trying to remember how we transferred data between my IBM and his TRS-80s. I know I've seen the TRS screen in old films of the '80s.
  12:28pm rob t.:

i don't think i will be consulting Nellie McKay for political advice.
  12:29pm kat330:

Speaking of hard rain, you gonna play Dylan's Positively 4th St. perchance?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm charlie:

Lotsa angry ladies on BDN!
Bobby's in the green room, kat.
  12:31pm rob t.:

kat330: at that time, i don't think people were really worried about data transfer, which is kinda sad. i had a Star Trek: Next Generation joke script on my Amiga and I never could retrieve it.
  12:33pm listener james from westwood:

we had trash-80s in middle school, and commodore pets in high school. at home, though, i had a c64, so i did actually do some of my computing in color.
  12:35pm kat330:

@rob: That's terrible. I still think we found some method of transfer -- maybe using the BBS itself -- and I'm happy that's been pretty much all corrected. My husband uses Apple exclusively, and I use a PC. A stick does the trick between us. :)
  12:35pm Carmichael:

Next time you watch the movie War Games, look at the computer Ferris Buehler is using. It's either a TRS-80 or a 1st generation IBM. Nice clacky keyboard.
  12:36pm kat330:

Yes, that's the one! I couldn't remember the Broderick film title -- Master Games was what I kept coming up with.
  12:36pm Tower:

Hello all. Ramones!
  12:39pm listener james from westwood:

there was some model of ibm keyboard from that era, metal frame, that became hotly sought due to its keyboard feel and indestructibility. you could run it in the dishwasher and have it work fine once dry.
  12:39pm Tower:

I still remember sorting Fortran cards. I was probably in the last class to do that.
  12:39pm kat330:

There be a *lot* of angry women. Righteously so in most cases. ;
  12:42pm Carmichael:

@Tower: I did the same thing in college. It was 1982 and I immediately changed majors.
  12:43pm Dervish:

Curmudgeons Unite!
  12:44pm kat330:

@Tower: I wish I'd had the chance to work with computers early on. I think I might have had a lucrative career in CS. But I took a hard left onto the stage instead.
  12:45pm kat330:

Oh, and I'm reminded of a recent Neil Young appearance and his Pono gadget. Anyone else heard about that?
  12:47pm kat330:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pono [last pp. before the footnotes]
  12:47pm northguineahills:

I love Tricky's cover of this.
  12:48pm rob t.:

Tricky and Topley-Bird do such a great job with this!
  12:48pm kat330:

Yo, ngh! Still no mail came through. If you're still even trying, it's my handle on the playlist in front of gmail -- simple! :)
  12:49pm rob t.:

@northguineahills what number am i thinking of?
  12:50pm Matt from Springfield:

Hearty, welcoming "Grrrrrrrrrr!" to Charlie and everyone!
Busy Getting Angry, I missed the Isley Brothers "Fight the Power"--wasn't THAT the sample source of Public Enemy? I remember the Isleys are credited as the sample composers.
  12:52pm kat330:

Matty, my man!

Bobby, another mensch!
  12:53pm Tower:

This was too good not to share. The first photo relates to the computer thread earlier. http://now.msn.com/funny-gravestones-a-photo-gallery
  12:53pm northguineahills:

@kat, I'll try again later today, I was out most of yesterday.
  12:54pm Matt from Springfield:

Katty! There's the Zimmermensch, I didn't catch him coming out of charlie's Green Room--I try to chat with him on his way back in.
  12:54pm northguineahills:

Matt, you're correct if IRC.
  12:56pm Carmichael:

my name is really mud.
  12:56pm kat330:

Must be something telling that we're talking about machines during the angry show an awful lot.
  12:57pm Tower:

I have always liked "Talk Talk" especially Alice Cooper's Version. This one is great too of course.
  12:57pm Matt from Springfield:

@NGH: Yeah, apparently the song was also the origin of the lyric "we gotta fight the powers that be".
  12:58pm kat330:

Why were *you* in Charlie's green room, Matt? What will you be performing? [I can't imagine an angry thought coming out of your mouth.]
  12:59pm Matt from Springfield:

**chucks a computer down the staircase**

@kat: Sorry, I was doing something that had to be done. What did you say? ;)
  1:01pm Matt from Springfield:

@kat: Actually I just want to chat with these great artists, so I'm refreshing their drinks in hopes of talking with them...
  1:01pm kat330:

I've never vented my frustration on a computer, though I've been pretty damn hard on a mouse or two.

Ask Neil to show you his Pono [no, it's not that].
  1:03pm rob t.:

@northguineahills Spot on! :)
  1:03pm Carmichael:

Ol' Curtis Mayfield, may he rest in peace.
  1:04pm Doug S.:

A single pledge of $50 will balloon Charlie's total up to the 20% mark. That would be mighty spectacular. Charlie has four shows this month, during the month-long Silent Fundraiser. So ideally, we should help get Charlie to at least 25% by the end of today's show.

You don't wanna make Charlie angry, do you?
  1:04pm Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: Love Curtis, during and after the Impressions.
  1:06pm kat330:

What a shame he was only 5 days short of experiencing Y2K.
  1:10pm still b/p:

Kris Kristofferson: "Don't let the bastards get you down."
Sinéad_O'Connor: "I'm not down."
  1:12pm Matt from Springfield:

Oops, reversion to GTDR stream there!
  1:12pm kat330:

Midst of what?? Weirdly the stream is going out!
  1:12pm wild 'dom:

Being There: "Don't let those bastards get you down."
  1:13pm Dervish:

Your connection cut out in the middle of your rant just there, Charlie. You are in and out.
  1:13pm listener james from westwood:

the stream kicked out just as you said what was going on, charlie! it's a conspiracy!!
  1:13pm marx:

I think it's censorship
  1:15pm Matt from Springfield:

@still b/p: Where was that from? "Don't let the bastards grind you down" is a classic of "dog Latin", Latin words for anglicized phrases.

General "Vinegar Joe" Stilwell had as his motto: "Illegitimi non carborundum", which would translate as that!
  1:16pm kat330:

It certainly seemed beyond coincidence how / when it cut out on my end. Thought perhaps was hitting buttons on purpose -- a bit of mischief?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm charlie:

I've got the stream here. Any other problems?
  1:16pm Matt from Springfield:

It's censorship by Doug S!
"Oh no you don't! *I'm* the house radical here!" ;)
  1:17pm kat330:

s.b. thought perhaps Charlie was hitting....
  1:17pm Matt from Springfield:

@charlie: It's fine now, but reverted back to the automated stream, then cut out a couple times during the mic break. Stream's going fine now.
  1:18pm Tower:

Love the groove and the Poppin' horns!
  1:18pm still b/p:

When O' Connor was booed at Madison Square Garden a couple of weeks after tearing pope picture on SNL, KK encouraged and comforted on stage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm charlie:

I was talking about our efforts to unionize at our workplace! I'll try again next mic break, but here's a link to an article from the local weekly paper (more radical than the daily paper): www.commonsnews.org...
  1:21pm Matt from Springfield:

Eugene McDaniels! This is a slick, almost GSH style piece!

Ten Wheel Drive was mighty awesome as well!
  1:22pm Michael:

Jeez charlie - let's hear it for the Union! And Barry Commoner died this week too =(
  1:22pm kat330:

When Eugene reaches for certain notes, it reminds me of XTC's Partridge -- and then a loungy Sammy Davis, Jr. sound on the low notes.
  1:23pm Matt from Springfield:

@charlie: So strong and radical, the people can only handle it ONCE a week! After all, as the Manic Street Preachers said:
"Ifthedailypapertoldthetruthforonedayit'sworldwouldfallapart" :)
  1:23pm gi:go:

I thought there'd be more news results for : "garbage in" "big data".
I mean, what with all the 'garbage out'
  1:23pm Matt from Springfield:

Union "talking blues"! Was this a Guthrie originally?
  1:25pm northguineahills:

I believe it's was a Guthrie tune originally.
  1:25pm ndbob:

I think this is the original - lots of Almanac Singers recordings are about unions
  1:25pm Carmichael:

Charlie, I thought it was some kind of artistic mood you were trying to acieve. Now I hear the dang stream just broke. Now I'm angry.
  1:25pm Michael:

So what's the status now charlie - next steps?
  1:25pm northguineahills:

or, Guthrie recorded it.
  1:26pm kat330:

Heh, speak of the rara avis...
  1:26pm Matt from Springfield:

Thanks still b/p, and NGH/NDBob too!

This sounded a bit newer, WWII era. Particularly since they're adding themes of not letting "race hatred" divide you.
  1:26pm Tower:

Did someone mention Andy?
  1:27pm kat330:

More power to you, Charlie!! [just finally scrolled up to get your link]

I did, Tower. :)
  1:27pm frenchee:

thanks, Chaz, for that uplifting "Talking Union" ditty. TAKE IT EASY....but TAKE IT!
Inspiring words....
  1:28pm listener james from westwood:

thanks for the link, charlie! hope this effort goes through and you get good representation.
  1:29pm Matt from Springfield:

Great anti-war songs from XTC!
Melt the guns / and never want to fire them
Melt the guns / and never more desire them!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm charlie:

Thanks, frenchee...
@Michael -- the boss is forcing a vote w the National Labor Relations Board, rather than voluntarily recognizing the union. Many other co-ops in the region are unionized, made the transition without the vote. So we're pretty disappointed in the (lack of) leadership! But we're pushing on... in a positive way!
  1:30pm Matt from Springfield:

There was another one from XTC that Evan played with a similiarly great rhyme. Something like:
Blow on your horn till Jericho yields
Everyone throw down their swords and shields!!
  1:31pm rob t.:

Dear God counts as an angry song, I think.
  1:32pm kat330:

Is he talking to a chair?
  1:32pm kat330:

@rob t: Yes, yes, indeed it does. Very effective.
  1:33pm listener james from westwood:

oh, the neighbor's getting a taste of this cut fer certain.
  1:33pm frenchee:

CHARLIE, you are FIRED UP. And Now I'm bouncing along to "Fight the Power," still an amazing song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm charlie:

Yeah, Matt, that's from "Kunckle Down," another great XTC song, same album.
  1:35pm Tower:

So you shot Twice once and them Jim fell. ... No, I only shot once. ... Twice was the hold up man. ... I guess I did shoot twice. ... Oh so now you're changing your story.
  1:35pm northguineahills:

Always a good excuse to play PE.
  1:35pm Carmichael:

So Charlie, looks like you are officially a "rabblerouser". Pretty cool!
  1:38pm Matt from Springfield:

Wow, those strange vocals are Morricone!
  1:39pm Michael:

Good luck to you charlie and your fellow workers - fight the good fight!
  1:41pm kat330:

@Matt: Almost sounds like the townspeople in the Grinch cartoon -- which is funny since I was wondering if Charlie might play Thurl Ravenscroft doing Mean One Mr. Grinch.
  1:42pm kat330:

Stream out again!!
  1:43pm Matt from Springfield:

More blips back to the automated stream!
  1:43pm kat330:

This one certainly takes me back to childhood.
  1:43pm Matt from Springfield:

I think the levee btw the show and the stream is cracking, pile up sandbags, everyone!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm charlie:

Try refreshing or restarting stream. It's playing here.
  1:44pm Gary Mitchell:

one of hal david's non-bacharach compositions
  1:44pm Matt from Springfield:

@kat: Been a while since I've seen the Grinch--I'll have to compare!
  1:44pm kat330:

If the levee was built by the Army Corps, we're doomed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm charlie:

Thanks for that info, Gary -- did not know that one!
  1:45pm kat330:

Charlie, it always comes back -- just brief blips.
  1:45pm frenchee:

lol
oh god, please somebody totally inappropriate sing "JohnnyGet Angry" at Hoof n Mouth....Please???
  1:46pm Carmichael:

Or "He Hit Me and It Felt Like a Kiss".
  1:46pm Gary Mitchell:

i agree frenchee, that would be worth staying up late for
  1:48pm Matt from Springfield:

@charlie: Thanks for the explanation, I myself was wondering why a co-op would want to unionize--although if YOU employees aren't the owners, but the community, then wouldn't that more properly be a community-owned non-profit, rather than a "co-op"?

Wouldn't the solution be to a group that disagrees with a co-op, to "secede" and form their own co-op? Pardon me if I'm new to this as a practical model.
  1:49pm kat330:

Like "Andy Get Frangry" sung by ?

The 'Mats!
  1:49pm northguineahills:

I thought Irwin hijacked the stream for a minute.
  1:50pm Michael:

ditto ngh. Stress is taking it's toll on charlie.
  1:50pm Da cheez!:

What was the name of morricone's track played in the background?
  1:52pm ndbob:

Thanks for playing Kelly Charlie!
  1:52pm kat330:

As a preface I simply ADORE Nina, but I have trouble with some of her covers. This one and I Shall Be Released to be specific.
  1:54pm kat330:

No denying Clarkson's got some superior pipes.
  1:54pm ndbob:

@kat Nina's version is actually the original
  1:54pm kat330:

R&J theme?!?!
  1:54pm Matt from Springfield:

@kat: While some of her covers are amazing, I always appreciate all her covers--always a thoroughly "Nina" reading of them.
  1:55pm Carmichael:

We recently unionized here at my public agency, in order to fight arbitrary layoffs of non-union positions. Very ugly scene within and without, but we're in a much fairer and more secure environment. But there are "winners and losers", and grudges continue to be held.
  1:55pm kat330:

Oooh, sorry -- my very bad, Bob. I love it that I get an education every day I'm on a playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm charlie:

lol, frenchee -- yes!
@ndbob -- you're welcome! that's a superior pop song.

  2:00pm Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: That's great--in any workplace struggle, those feelings will probably be felt as long as those same people are still working there. But I'm glad you achieved justice at your workplace.

And charlie, best of luck. Whatever the problem is, I too hope you achieve justice at your workplace.
