Musicians for Mali

Political instability has caused a major refugee crisis in Northern Mali. It's a cultural crisis too: In this region that gave us the sublime desert blues sound of Tinariwen and so many others, religious fundamentalists have now banned music. On Saturday September 22, African and American musicians will join in Musicians for Mali, a concert at City Winery to benefit refugees and raise awareness. The headliners are Toubab Krewe, a band of North Carolinians inspired by Malian music. Two more Americans taking part in the benefit, Banning Eyre and Sam Dickey, join Rob tonight to explore how this music has resonated so much with musicians outside Africa. We preview the concert with tracks by the artists, and talk about what's happening.
If you can’t make it to the benefit concert, please consider making a donation. You can do so via http://i4africa.org

Brian in UK:
Rob, just listening on the wonderful archive. I bought Sory Kandia Kouyate's comp on Sterns recently. Oh to have seen him live. Interesting to hear Kulanjan originally done by Toumani's dad Sidiki who plays on most of Kouyate's music. Gambia through Senegal into Mali. Thoughts with the Malian people. Great show, still playing your premium. | |
