One of the finest "get happy!" tunes.
Hi, Kurt!
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:02pm DCE:

oh I hated to hear that Deerhoof faded out like that...but it's your show, DJKG.
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 3:08pm DJKG:

yeah, i shoulda told him to let the deerhoof roll, but i was too busy cuing a scratchy record. hello everyone!
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:12pm kat330:

Composer KURTág, appropriate enough, but it's crashing my revved Nash rambler.
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:16pm hamburger:

interesting violin
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:16pm fred:

Good afternoon Kurt and kat330, hello again DCE
Not the first time I hear something I like from that Pieces from the Past CD...
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:17pm kat330:

Allo, Fred!
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:19pm hamburger:

I forgot how the violin can be so dramatic
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:21pm Cheri Pi:

Hey DJKG!
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:23pm kat330:

@hamburger: It's really like a tortured soul, a dramatic monologue.
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:26pm hamburger:

there's a yann tiersen video on youtube I saw doing sur le fil where he just destroys his bow strings - very coo
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:28pm kat330:

Or the opposite of "coo"? ;) Low spark of a high coo....
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:29pm hamburger:

A haiku?
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:30pm northguineahills:

Wow, this is new (Corner/Goldstein)!
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:33pm DCE:

slow down, Johnny!
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:33pm kat330:

Yep, a haiku.
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:34pm DCE:

well, hey, we're all special in some way.
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:39pm hamburger:

@DCE: Yep. Apart from *THAT* guy.... nothing special going on there....
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:40pm kat330:

He's really revved up.
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:45pm common:

It's mesmerizing.
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:56pm fred:

Since DJKG mentioned Cage, I have a question: I remember hearing a vocal piece recorded in Italy where the boos and catcalls get louder and louder, and he obviously played with that. But I can't remember what it was. Does that ring a bell?
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:56pm kat330:

The piece entirely of silence, maybe?
  Fri. 8/24/12 3:59pm Cheri Pi:

this is badass.
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:00pm kat330:

@fred: Well, obviously if there were a vocal, then NOT the silence piece. Pardonnez-moi.
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:00pm fred:

No, there was voice, and at one point it stops, you can hear the audience's relief and as it starts again the hostility just jumps a few notches.
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:01pm Carmichael:

Hey Kurt, hi everyone. Seems to be a Friday afternoon. Yay!
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:01pm kat330:

Messages crossing in the ether, fred. :)
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:03pm fred:

@kat330: that was close enough, because that pause was silence. I talked about that piece at work today, I'd like to find it. I know it's somewhere in the archives...
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 4:06pm DJKG:

fred, maybe you're thinking of dylan at newport?
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:06pm kat330:

Not surprising but the rockin' animation isn't fitting with the set tempos so much today.
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:07pm kat330:

Heh! Yes, plenty of boos and catcalls, but I don't think Dylan "played with it" all that much.
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:09pm northguineahills:

Haven't heard this yet, and I automatically recognized it as Om.
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:13pm fred:

I think the piece used long vowels, and the insults sounded Italian. Oh well, I thought this show might have been where I heard it. Fabio maybe? Or Kenny G?
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:14pm kat330:

A thought no doubt of little merit, but I was musing the other day how so much of band vocals in the past 1-2 decades are of unison singing, even if two different octaves (like TV on the Radio, etc.). Harmony missing in the music world corresponding to anything in the Zeitgeist?
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 4:18pm DJKG:

fred, i don't know the piece, but it does sound familiar. there's a lot to peruse at johncage.info, but you might be able to find the info there.
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 4:19pm DJKG:

funny how johnny nash looks like he can be in motorhead if the right song is playing.
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:24pm chris m.:

this Earth song is my jam from way back in the day. thanks Kurt!
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 4:25pm DJKG:

yay chris!
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:29pm kat330:

OK, NOW Johnny's in rhythm.
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:29pm Cheri Pi:

I'm gonna listen to that Earth LP when I get home from work!!!
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:30pm Cheri Pi:

I love this.
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:31pm DCE:

aw, such a sad song title. somebody loves you, Litany. :(
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:32pm DCE:

emoticons are in blackface on this comment board :(

Miniature Minotaurs Minstrels & Minnesota Jeff Show w/DJKG.
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:37pm kat330:

♫♫♫ Can I hear a mi-mi-mi-mi from the all-unison chorus? ♫♫♫
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:40pm fred:

Found it, thanks to johncage.it! It's called "Empty Words". Not vowels actually, just disconnected words: http://goo.gl/J8u1w
According to the archives, it seems I heard it on Vicki's show
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 4:42pm DJKG:

oh! empty words! yeah, that's an interesting piece. i think it's being performed in nyc coming up.
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:50pm northguineahills:

Nice segue, Kurt! (missed the first 10 minutes as I was gardening in the daylight.)
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:50pm common:

Friday!!! Beer Day!!!
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:51pm fred:

I'm afraid the audience will be too respectful. I saw a nice performance this year as part of the centenary, it felt weird: the scientific director of the lab where I work was seated right behind me
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 4:54pm DJKG:

fred, yes, i understand. i'm doing a cage piece in a couple weeks and i'm going to request that audience members leave their cell phones on with the ringers turned up, but not to answer them.
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:55pm kat330:

@DJKG: Even the medical doctors?
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:56pm northguineahills:

I saw a Cage piece at Tonic a while back that was performed by a polite "new" music ensemble, and it was way too perfect (musicians were conservatory trained, etc), and it killed for me.
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 4:56pm DJKG:

yes, even the doctors can leave their phones on.
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:56pm kat330:

Could offer an interesting side performance piece on "who's most popular with the most calls." ;)
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:56pm fred:

That's a splendid idea!
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 4:56pm DJKG:

oh, not answering. well what am i gonna do, slap them if the take the call?
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:57pm kat330:

I meant, the doctors may not answer them?
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:58pm kat330:

Ships passing again. The Litany of the Whale....
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:58pm fred:

@DJKG: but you shouldn't talk about it that much, Ken and Andy might steal it for their show
  Fri. 8/24/12 4:59pm kat330:

@fred: Or anyone reading this now might "rig" the performance by having someone auto-dial them every minute or so.
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 5:00pm DJKG:

the cell phone thing? they can do it if they want.
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 5:01pm DJKG:

kat, that's true. i'd actually thought of that but figured it wouldn't be too likely since no one would until they got the program. guess i blew that. ok, nobody do that!
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:01pm fred:

@NGH: I saw that too often as well, and the opposite too: people who just slap a "Cage tribute" sticker while they do their usual stuff with a sprinkle of antics.
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:04pm kat330:

[majikat says "pooof!"] Now the whole conversation never happened, Kurt.
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:05pm fred:

@DJKG: will you leave your own phone on?
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:06pm fred:

@kat330: oops! Bad cross this time, did I jinx your spell?
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 5:07pm DJKG:

should i delete my own comment from the record?
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 5:08pm DJKG:

i would leave my phone on but i'll be using a stopwatch app and the ringer interrupts it.
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:08pm kat330:

@fred: What's another "poooof" for majikat? [poooof!]
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:09pm fred:

I guess now I have to confess that the lab in Paris where I work is called IRCAM
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:09pm kat330:

@DJKG: Depends on how much traffic you think you get on this playlist -- of people within the NYC area.
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:10pm kat330:

@fred: Are you going to have to kill us all now?
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:11pm northguineahills:

Lol!
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:12pm fred:

Do you really think anyone working there has that kind of budget?
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:12pm mark vt:

Does anyone here sneeze at times when eyes exposed to sunlight or other bright light?
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:13pm kat330:

Chant: Emancypunkx Phil of Punxsutawney!
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:13pm fred:

@mark vt: I do, twice
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:14pm northguineahills:

Yes, it has happened to me since I was a wee one. If I ever need to get a sneeze out, I stare at a bright light (not too bright).
My father has the same reaction.
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 5:14pm DJKG:

i sneeze, yes.
john denver cries.
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:15pm kat330:

Odd you should ask, Mark. My man, Monsieur Gristle, is a sunlight sneezer. I think he quite enjoys the experience since he won't wear sunglasses very often.
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:16pm kat330:

My sneezing -- which is considerable in Ohio Valley August -- is only from everything else BUT sunlight.
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:17pm Xeroz:

I've heard before that the tilting of the head upwards is whats helpful when needing to sneeze... I've always enjoyed sneezing, i think.
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:17pm Chinchilla:

The Ani-Nash is really rockin now!
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 5:19pm DJKG:

one of my favorite things in the world is the reason behind head tilting connoting confusion. anyone know that story?
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:20pm kat330:

If there were ever a quorum of women on these lists, we might discover if it's only or mainly males who sneeze at the sun. Our lovely Sol is nothing to sneeze at, btw. ;)
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 5:21pm DJKG:

the head tilt is left over from hunting days. you listen once and then reposition your ears and listen again to help triangulate on a sound. dogs do it a lot. i love that.
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:22pm kat330:

I've heard that shifting one's eyes up and R. (or L.?) connotes someone lying. But it also is standard when trying to recall something. Like fishing for a file drawer in the brain.
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:23pm Xeroz:

so I suppose all those teens playing shoot-em-ups on their headphones could really relate!
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:24pm fred:

@DJKG: I didn't know that. Then again one of my ears doesn't work, so I can't tell where a sound comes from
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:24pm kat330:

Hunting and fishing. Well, I'm gathering and, in fact, need to scuttle out to the garden for some din-din dinguses.
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:29pm mark vt:

I ask about the sneezing thing because a couple years ago I heard station manager Ken had this. Plus some other people at wfmu. I tried to organize a quick sneeze fest break at the record fair. Ken could not sneeze and Clay P was there and didn't have this issue. Thinking about doing it again this record fair.
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:31pm mark vt:

Oh. About a third of humans have this capability. It is genetic. Something to do with some nerves in the face that cross in some people with eye and nose nerves.
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:32pm dc p@:

I sure missed a lot here--for the record, I sneeze every time the sun hits my eyes. Hence the constant need for sun glasses..
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:37pm northguineahills:

I love Gruenrekorder Recs!
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:38pm northguineahills:

I sneeze on cue if I go from a dark space to a very bright.
Fri. 8/24/12 5:39pm the glowing one:

I sneeze when I stick something up my nose
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:40pm kat330:

Back. Say, Fred, very impressive your IRCAM! We are fortunate to be in your FMU presence! :)
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:40pm fred:

@mark vt: since you did some research, is my double sneezing genetic too? It's always twice in that situation
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:41pm kat330:

Joni, here? Thank you, DJKG!

Actually, thanks all ways for this afternoon's sunshine and shadow! Good weekends, everyone!
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:41pm mark vt:

I was trying to think if why I thought if that here in Kurt's forum. Then I realized it was because people were talking about iPhone apps. I wondered if an app could be made, a sneeze app that you stare at and makes you sneeze. Maybe I should test this out on one of those flashlight apps.
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:42pm kat330:

@mark: Do animals, dogs for e.g., also have that genetic trait? I'm thinking I've noticed dogs sneezing when looking upwards on a sunny day.
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:43pm fred:

@kat330: I'm afraid the history is more impressive than the reality. But my telling about the scientific director at a Cage concert was misleading in light of DJKG talking about Boulez. I'm just a geek there, nothing to be fortunate about
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:44pm kat330:

And I still haven't noticed a female's name mentioned. I believe we are possessed of more powerful olfactory equipment, so maybe that interferes with the trait for sun-sneezing.
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:46pm kat330:

@fred: I suppose there's an irony with some hearing loss to be working at IRCAM?
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:46pm mark vt:

Wonder if squirting and sneezing are genetically intertwined in women.
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:48pm kat330:

You've lost me, mark.
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:48pm fred:

@kat330: Where are Cecile and Cheri? BTW, the station is a big part of how I ended up working there, and that's not really hearing loss: I was born that way, so there was nothing to lose
Fri. 8/24/12 5:50pm Mr. Potato Head:

ALMOST 6 O'clock baby!!!!! I AM PUMMMPED!!! LOL
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:50pm other david:

The perfect soundtrack to a most befuddling day, thanks for the show KG!

ahoy kat, fred and everyone
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:52pm kat330:

Heya, OD! :)
Fri. 8/24/12 5:53pm Mr. Potato Head:

only 7 minutes left!!!!! YAY!!!
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:54pm mark vt:

Seems there are all sorts of scientific correlations to think about being connected to "sun" sneezing. wonder if the percentage of wfmu listeners with this "ease" as it is not a disease but rather pleasant and useful, is higher than the public.
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:54pm northguineahills:

My olfactory sensors are beyond compare. Very, sensitive and accurate. However, I inherited my sense if smell from my mom.
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:55pm northguineahills:

if=of
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:55pm kat330:

If your poll here is any indication, it certainly seems more than 1/3 among FMU males
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:55pm Roadkill:

+Thanks for the listening... RK
Fri. 8/24/12 5:56pm Mr. Potato Head:

FRANGRY!! FRANGRY!! FRANGRY!! FRANGRY!! FRANGRY!! PUUUUUUUMPED!!!!!
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:56pm kat330:

@NGH: I figured as much! (Check out Steinski's list for my Opa! pita sandwich today.)
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:57pm kat330:

Goodbye, sneezers and nons! T&GC!
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:57pm fred:

Another nice show DJKG, hear you next week!
@kat 330: now that's a small sample size
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:57pm northguineahills:

I saw the pita sandwich, I was just never around my laptop to comment. have a great weekend kat!
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:58pm kat330:

:) Love you all!
  Fri. 8/24/12 5:59pm mark vt:

Thanks, Kurt. Always one of the best part of my Friday afternoons.
