Good afternoon Kurt and kat330, hello again DCE Not the first time I hear something I like from that Pieces from the Past CD...

Hey DJKG! | |

@hamburger: It's really like a tortured soul, a dramatic monologue.

there's a yann tiersen video on youtube I saw doing sur le fil where he just destroys his bow strings - very coo

Or the opposite of "coo"? ;) Low spark of a high coo....

Since DJKG mentioned Cage, I have a question: I remember hearing a vocal piece recorded in Italy where the boos and catcalls get louder and louder, and he obviously played with that. But I can't remember what it was. Does that ring a bell?
|
Fri. 8/24/12 3:56pm
kat330:
The piece entirely of silence, maybe?
|
Fri. 8/24/12 3:59pm
Cheri Pi:
this is badass. | |
|
Fri. 8/24/12 4:00pm
kat330:
@fred: Well, obviously if there were a vocal, then NOT the silence piece. Pardonnez-moi.
|
Fri. 8/24/12 4:00pm
fred:
No, there was voice, and at one point it stops, you can hear the audience's relief and as it starts again the hostility just jumps a few notches.
|

|
Fri. 8/24/12 4:03pm

@kat330: that was close enough, because that pause was silence. I talked about that piece at work today, I'd like to find it. I know it's somewhere in the archives...

DJKG:
fred, maybe you're thinking of dylan at newport? |
|
Fri. 8/24/12 4:06pm
kat330:
Not surprising but the rockin' animation isn't fitting with the set tempos so much today.
|
Fri. 8/24/12 4:07pm
kat330:
Heh! Yes, plenty of boos and catcalls, but I don't think Dylan "played with it" all that much.
|
Fri. 8/24/12 4:09pm
northguineahills:
Haven't heard this yet, and I automatically recognized it as Om.
|
Fri. 8/24/12 4:13pm
fred:
I think the piece used long vowels, and the insults sounded Italian. Oh well, I thought this show might have been where I heard it. Fabio maybe? Or Kenny G?
|
Fri. 8/24/12 4:14pm
kat330:
A thought no doubt of little merit, but I was musing the other day how so much of band vocals in the past 1-2 decades are of unison singing, even if two different octaves (like TV on the Radio, etc.). Harmony missing in the music world corresponding to anything in the Zeitgeist?
|
|
♥
Fri. 8/24/12 4:18pm

fred, i don't know the piece, but it does sound familiar. there's a lot to peruse at johncage.info, but you might be able to find the info there. |

I'm afraid the audience will be too respectful. I saw a nice performance this year as part of the centenary, it felt weird: the scientific director of the lab where I work was seated right behind me

fred, yes, i understand. i'm doing a cage piece in a couple weeks and i'm going to request that audience members leave their cell phones on with the ringers turned up, but not to answer them. |

@DJKG: Even the medical doctors?

Fri. 8/24/12 4:56pm

I saw a Cage piece at Tonic a while back that was performed by a polite "new" music ensemble, and it was way too perfect (musicians were conservatory trained, etc), and it killed for me.

If there were ever a quorum of women on these lists, we might discover if it's only or mainly males who sneeze at the sun. Our lovely Sol is nothing to sneeze at, btw. ;)

the head tilt is left over from hunting days. you listen once and then reposition your ears and listen again to help triangulate on a sound. dogs do it a lot. i love that. |
|
Fri. 8/24/12 5:22pm
kat330:
I've heard that shifting one's eyes up and R. (or L.?) connotes someone lying. But it also is standard when trying to recall something. Like fishing for a file drawer in the brain.
|
Fri. 8/24/12 5:23pm
Xeroz:
so I suppose all those teens playing shoot-em-ups on their headphones could really relate!
|
Fri. 8/24/12 5:24pm
fred:
@DJKG: I didn't know that. Then again one of my ears doesn't work, so I can't tell where a sound comes from
|
Fri. 8/24/12 5:24pm
kat330:
Hunting and fishing. Well, I'm gathering and, in fact, need to scuttle out to the garden for some din-din dinguses.
|
Fri. 8/24/12 5:29pm
mark vt:
I ask about the sneezing thing because a couple years ago I heard station manager Ken had this. Plus some other people at wfmu. I tried to organize a quick sneeze fest break at the record fair. Ken could not sneeze and Clay P was there and didn't have this issue. Thinking about doing it again this record fair.
|
Fri. 8/24/12 5:31pm
mark vt:
Oh. About a third of humans have this capability. It is genetic. Something to do with some nerves in the face that cross in some people with eye and nose nerves.

Fri. 8/24/12 5:32pm

I sure missed a lot here--for the record, I sneeze every time the sun hits my eyes. Hence the constant need for sun glasses..

Fri. 8/24/12 5:40pm

@mark vt: since you did some research, is my double sneezing genetic too? It's always twice in that situation
|
Fri. 8/24/12 5:41pm
kat330:
Joni, here? Thank you, DJKG! Actually, thanks all ways for this afternoon's sunshine and shadow! Good weekends, everyone!
|
Fri. 8/24/12 5:41pm
mark vt:
I was trying to think if why I thought if that here in Kurt's forum. Then I realized it was because people were talking about iPhone apps. I wondered if an app could be made, a sneeze app that you stare at and makes you sneeze. Maybe I should test this out on one of those flashlight apps.
|
Fri. 8/24/12 5:42pm
kat330:
@mark: Do animals, dogs for e.g., also have that genetic trait? I'm thinking I've noticed dogs sneezing when looking upwards on a sunny day.
|
Fri. 8/24/12 5:43pm
fred:
@kat330: I'm afraid the history is more impressive than the reality. But my telling about the scientific director at a Cage concert was misleading in light of DJKG talking about Boulez. I'm just a geek there, nothing to be fortunate about
|
Fri. 8/24/12 5:44pm
kat330:
And I still haven't noticed a female's name mentioned. I believe we are possessed of more powerful olfactory equipment, so maybe that interferes with the trait for sun-sneezing.
|
Fri. 8/24/12 5:46pm
kat330:
@fred: I suppose there's an irony with some hearing loss to be working at IRCAM?
|
Fri. 8/24/12 5:46pm

Wonder if squirting and sneezing are genetically intertwined in women.

You've lost me, mark. | |
|
Fri. 8/24/12 5:48pm

@kat330: Where are Cecile and Cheri? BTW, the station is a big part of how I ended up working there, and that's not really hearing loss: I was born that way, so there was nothing to lose

Seems there are all sorts of scientific correlations to think about being connected to "sun" sneezing. wonder if the percentage of wfmu listeners with this "ease" as it is not a disease but rather pleasant and useful, is higher than the public.
