Listener comments!

  12:00pm
listener james from westwood:

a fine monday to jeff and jeff! howdy to all listeners!
  12:01pm
Doug S.:

Pardon the technical difficulty. Show will be up in 6 minutes.
  12:03pm
duke:

Sounds good, but didn't sound like Roscoe Mitchell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm
Jeff G:

For once I'm not the one who's late...PLS STAND BY!
  12:05pm
Doug S.:

Two minutes and 49 seconds...
  12:06pm
Doug S.:

Not sure how this got mucked up, but you can bet it's MY fault.
  12:07pm
Doug S.:

We are under a minute now. Keep calm and carry on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm
Jeff G:

Nah. As always, I blame Brotzmann.
  12:09pm
Doug S.:

Longest freaking six minutes of my life. Welcome to DESTINATION OUT!!
  12:12pm
listener james from westwood:

will surely be worth the wait.
  12:17pm
Artie:

Hello Peaches!
  12:19pm
Doug S.:

Had dinner with folks here the other night and our host was trying to describe a really loud tenor sax player she saw "at a free jazz festival in New York." Instantaneously I said "Brötzmann," and her jaw dropped like was a magician.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
Peaches:

Hi, handsome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm
Jeff G:

This is pretty hardcore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
Jeff G:

Henry Threadgill; Joseph Jarman; Wallace McMillan; and Roscoe, btw. Four altos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm
Jeff G:

And now Jeff J points out to me that it's Charlie Haden's birthday today. Not enough hours -- or birthday planners.
  1:05pm
steve:

why am I hearing Mike Nesmith?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm
Jeff G:

@steve: try www.wfmu.org...
  1:10pm
?:

Thanks for the Roscoe Mitchell!
  1:27pm
steve:

got it! thanks
  1:27pm
northguineahills:

? was me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
Jeff G:

Ah, the mysterious northguineahills! You are of course very welcome.
  1:33pm
Jeff J:

This is definitely one of Roscoe's most ambitious and challenging pieces. Great use of his patented rhythm cage. Kudos for Nessa for springing for a great high-tech recording of this composition. Done at CBS studios in NYC!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
Jeff G:

Here's a nifty little interview that Jason Gross did with Mitchell back in 1998. RM discusses this tune and several others we're playing: www.furious.com...
  1:39pm
duke:

happy bithday roscoe!
  1:39pm
Michael Pollak:

Great show. Really enjoying it and learning a lot.
  1:41pm
Jeff J:

Apparently Odwalla were fans of AAC - and there were some business connections between them. Weird. Their products seem to be doing well these days. Wonder if the Art Ensemble sees any royalties for the "theme song"?
  1:44pm
Michael Pollak:

What's the best way of getting GTDS radio on an iPhone? For some reason, clicking on the link in the mail won't do it for me. And I want to go out and do errands and take this with me.
  1:45pm
Pat in Philaelphia:

@Michael get the WFMU IPhone app! It'll the change the way you do errands.
  1:47pm
North Fork:

It really doesn't get any better than this. The whole show I mean.
  1:47pm
Pat in Philaelphia:

Here's the link: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wfmu-radio/id324175340?mt=8
  1:48pm
Michael Pollak:

Does the WFMU iPhone app work for this stream?
  1:48pm
bgporter:

...and for any Android users in the crowd, I've been using an app called 'xiialive lite' to listen to DO:radio whilst walking the dog.
  1:50pm
bgporter:

...and two seconds of search shows me that there's a corresponding WFMU Android app. Installing.
  1:50pm
Doug S.:

@Michael Pollak
YES! The WFMU iPhone app has a option to hear this stream. Look for the bongos icon. Unfortunately, you can't (yet) access archives of Drummer Stream shows, but you can hear the stream live to your ears' content.
  1:50pm
Michael Pollak:

BTW, I fixed the original problem: there was a flaw in the original link Doug mailed out today. I think an extra underline. I just realized it didn't work on the computer either. The right link works fine on the iPhone from mail.
  1:51pm
duke:

this is cookin'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
Jeff G:

Such enterprising listeners! Honored and impressed.
The FMU app is really an amazing piece of tech.
@Michael: you get ALL the 'fmu streams with the app.
@North Fork: thanks! Glad you are enjoying!
  1:52pm
Michael Pollak:

@Pat in Philly @Doug S: Many thanks! Installing now.
  1:53pm
Doug S.:

@Michael Pollak
You're right, I did screw up the link. (It had an extra period instead of a slash). Rough morning for me, apparently...

My apologies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
Jeff G:

Roscoe's in the left channel here.
How do we know? Liner notes: www.restructures.net...
  1:58pm
Michael Pollak:

@Doug: Your mistake was my gain. This app is awesome. Plus I didn't know there were other streams. My life has just has a quantum improvement. And BTW, Jeff, this already great show just keeps getting better.
  1:58pm
bgporter:

Playing the Braxton in honor of his upcoming stint at Roulette next month?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm
Jeff G:

God bless Jason Guthartz and his insanely detailed Braxton discog maintained at restructures.net.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm
Jeff G:

@bgporter: uh...yeah? Just a lucky coincidence, really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm
Jeff G:

In Doug's defense, the VERY late delivery of some D:O files made for a hectic morning at GTDR HQ. We are nothing if not dependably late.
  2:04pm
northguineahills:

More Braxton!

Free Charlie Haden!
  2:21pm
Hugo:

@ngh: There was a Braxton-Mitchell duet back in the 70s. Dunno if the chaps have it lined up for today's prog, though.
  2:24pm
northguineahills:

George Lewis is always a treat.
  2:28pm
bgporter:

Meeting George Lewis was one of the highlights of my Spring this year. Ubuweb has a recording of his Voyager system (featuring Roscoe on a few tracks) available here: http://www.ubu.com/sound/lewis.html
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm
Jeff G:

And this is probably the duo Braxton/Mitchell recording alluded to by @Hugo: inconstantsol.blogspot.com... -- not slated for today's show, alas.
  2:31pm
northguineahills:

I think all of the recordings I have of George Lewis are from the last 10-15 years.

The blog If You Know What I'm Saying is a great site for in-depth Braxtonology:

That's the one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm
Jeff G:

@ngh: Lewis' HOMAGE TO CHARLES PARKER, from '79, is essential, if you don't have that one. It's less that $2 at Amazon's mp3 store: amzn.to...
  2:37pm
northguineahills:

Thanks Jeff!
  2:59pm
listener james from westwood:

thanks, gents, for the fine show! i'm always hoping monday's a d:o day!

How sweet. ljfw! Thanks for tuning in! We're ending late today, btw, so don't hang up yet...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm

I think that last tune was so long it bumped us out of "instaplaylist" status...

Superlative show Jeff!
