I had no interest in the gambling. It was an "anthropological" visit. A friend at the time sold subscriptions to the Oakland (Ca.) Tribune. @Brian in UK: According to some old friends of his, Lord Buckley's most extraordinary performance may have occurred during a Thanksgiving weekend retreat in the late 1950s at Dr. Janiger's Lake Arrowhead vacation cabin. The result of that performance - Buckley is said to have delivered a non-stop monologue that lasted more than 18 hours - is one of this storys more mysterious elements. "I have never seen a creative process as remarkable as that thing that happened," Janiger said of Buckley's soliloquy. 'I've never seen a human being continuously expound on a variety of subjects in such a refreshing, interesting way over such a long period of time without ever repeating himself. It was a virtuoso performance." |

@NGH I saw Bo Diddley open for the Clash in 1978 @Paul Sherratt Believe it or not I think you are NOT the first direct message from Womad. But maybe you are. @trish Is there a better two-word phrase in the English language than "ginger bits"? |

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT... Don't forget to stay tuned to the stream for the hour-long A Rough Mix show from Steinski. It airs immediately following Give the Drummer Some (Noon, Eastern). The link to the playlist for that show is here: bit.ly... Switch over to Steinski's show at noon and keep the conversation conversating. |

@Brian: Thanks for that link. I'm in the habit of listening to BBC 5 Fridays (9-11 am here) for Kermode & Mayo. It's always a struggle between GTDS and the MaKer guys. But now they're off for a few weeks, so I can be of one mind. :)

I've never seen Bo. But I HAVE seen Albert King, Albert Collins, Johnny Copeland, Gatemouth Brown, Professor Longhair. Hmm, others?

Re: my comment above on Fri. 7/27/12 9:37am: Must apologize for my Olympics inaccuracy there! Why I thought Olga garnered a "10" before Nadia, I dunno. Chalk it up to a parallel universe of True Expectations. She SHOULD have been awarded a 10 (or two).
|
Mon. 8/6/12 7:44am
Doug Schulkind:
@kat330 You're right. Olga *should* have gotten a 10 for that back flip and catch off the top of the uneven bars. Did you know they Olympics have now banned that move?
