|
Thu. 7/26/12 6:19am

I always thought that was the epyglotis

Thu. 7/26/12 6:19am

@OD: Good to know! So very many trees all over northern Virginia here--they make the place look really nice, but when those storms hit...There's a large forest behind me in fact, but sufficiently far away from my actually house.

"In Latin, ūvula means 'little grape', the diminutive form of ūva 'grape' (of unknown origin). A swollen uvula was called "ūva." "

So be glad you have just a little grape and not a big grape! I'm more focused on the "Hind Wall of Oro-Pharynx", that's a band name we need to see...

Oh Andy..... that sounds miserable! When I was a kid I thought your tonsils were your uvula.... Dave, I think it was swing music that got me into the older stuff.... |
|
Thu. 7/26/12 6:41am
Matt from Springfield:
@DaveB: Diddo with my Dad! And later myself! "Jumpin' Jive" is a fantastic album, and a broad introduction to various classics of the "jive" era. "You Run Your Mouth..", "San Francisco Fan", "Jack You Dead", "What's The Use of Getting Sober (When You're Gonna Get Drunk Again)"...
|
Thu. 7/26/12 6:41am

@Matt / Meghan - and it pre-dated the swing revival of the 90s by 10~15 years. But it got me digging into my mom's 78 collection as an early teen!

|
Thu. 7/26/12 6:49am
Matt from Springfield:
Although, tonsils are "the immune system's first line of defense against ingested or inhaled foreign pathogens. However, the fundamental immunological roles of tonsils have yet to be understood." Apparently you have tonsils removed if they become infected, and thus more trouble than they're worth. But they're a subtle little organ.
|
Thu. 7/26/12 6:49am
Caryn:
I have my tonsils, but am still hoping that ice cream buffet is in my future. There are two sets of tonsils, and they're both immunocompetent tissue, so they're considered the first line of defence against any pathogens that you breathe in.
|
Thu. 7/26/12 6:49am
FourLoko:
Why do they make us answer math questions to post? Is having basic addition skills a prerequisite to liking independent radio?

@ Meghan: At first I just assumed it was a sore throat but then my doctor pointed out that it was my uvula swelling to a size that when I swallowed, my throat muscles were pulling on it.

Caryn:
@BGZ: various WB cartoons certainly have miniaturised characters punching them like ones. @davice: oops, forgot cerebral tonsils, so 6 types. The cerebral and cerebellar ones are in the brain. The cerebellar tonsils are involved in the functioning of the cerebellum, such as controlling motor functions and sensory information. The other 4 are in the nasal cavity and back of the throat, close to each other and seem to mostly have the immunological function. The lingual tonsils and adenoids are also part of the lymphatic system.

Thu. 7/26/12 8:08am
Caryn:
The uvula 1) moves to prevent food from entering the nasal cavity when you swallow. It also 2) plays a role in articulation. People with very small uvulas may talk very nasally and have trouble saying certain consonants, such as b (it comes out as an m). It is especially important in languages that have uvular consonants or click consonants.

BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):
At the comic shop we had an oddball assortment of regulars of which 85% were annoying as hell. One day one of 'em had been boring the hell out of me telling me about some role-playing game. Finally he's about to leave and the CD changer switches to Zappa's "You Are What You Is" album. He gets all excited - "I love this record!" - and starts singing along to it. After about five songs I'd had enough. "You know how Frank made this record?" I asked him. He replied "no." "Well he did it without your help so shut up or get the fuck out of the store!" He left. True story! :D
