Dirty Beaches live on WFMU

Dirty Beaches is the rockabilly-nowave-hiphop project of Alex Zhang Hungtai, a bicoastal Canadian of Taiwanese birth and no place of his own. Dirty Beaches play displacement anthems for biker westerns starring Alan Vega and directed by David Lynch. A series of cassettes and split releases with folks like U.S. Girls and Ela Orleans lead to 2011's full-length "Badlands", an instant FMU hit and one of Scott's top records of the year. Joining him on guitar is Shub Roy.

Listener comments!

  3:02pm
Van in DC:

That Jim Price show is gonna be hard to follow up Scott. But I believe in you.
  3:02pm
DCE:

Les Rallizes Denudes is not a coincidence, I'm guessing.
  3:04pm
hamburger:

lookin forward to hearing dirty beaches!
  3:07pm
dc pat:

I don't know where hamburger is from but it's looking pretty DCy on this playlist.
  3:07pm
northguineahills:

Ha, I thought this was Mancini at first!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm
Scott W:

yeah, hard to follow Jim's conversation with Frank from Beyond -- good thing this Dirty Beaches set is so killer! Coming up @ 4pm
  3:09pm
BSI:

One more from the DC pile. Howdy Scott & comrades...
  3:11pm
hamburger fake DC:

no I'm not DC
  3:11pm
Mike East:

me and northguineahills gotta New York this playlist up. This Dirty Beaches piano line is so catchy.
  3:12pm
dc pat:

(don't think DCE is a DCer--just in his name)
  3:15pm
hamburger:

maybe his name is DC Ed or DC Eric or DC Ernie, y'know, DC + whatever name starts with 'E'
  3:15pm
pierre:

Bonjour Bonjour Scott W !
Bonjour Bonjour Los listeners extraordinaires !

It has been a while, so glad to catch up with Dirty Beaches, saw him last year it was a great great hot and sweaty gig.
  3:15pm
DCE:

d) none of the above
  3:16pm
hamburger:

Oh, if you look on the keyboard, the DCE keys are right next to each other, so it must be that, definitely must be that
  3:17pm
Mark in DC:

Another from DC. Namaste, bitches!
  3:17pm
DCE:

I'm just goin' to eat these peanuts.
  3:18pm
DCE:

MSG-free peanuts, I might add.
  3:18pm
dc pat:

GOD I wish I had some peanuts...I'm not going to make it without a midday snack...
  3:19pm
hamburger:

Is there anyone from DC that can recommend a decent rice cooker model? I'm looking for something that cooks rice nice and soft and fluffy, as well as being very easy to clean, because that's the thing with average rice cookers, the god damned cleaning. I heard native DC people are in the know for that kind of thing.
  3:20pm
GOD:

...kinda busy here, but you may find some peanuts in that desk drawer you have not opened in like 2 years.
  3:21pm
BSI:

it's all beer, no peanuts over here.
I did, however, prepare rice earlier. The good old fashioned way. No foofy cooker thing. No counter space in this damned place for a specialty machine...
  3:23pm
hamburger:

ah no, BSI, the foofy way is how all Chinese people cook the rice, only the foolish foreigner make attempt in a pot, even worse, microwave :-3
  3:24pm
northguineahills:

I'm just making myself a gigantic piece of toast w/ refried black beans, episote, jalapenos, y huevos. Maybe some Oaxaca queso fresca.
  3:25pm
still b/p:

Once you say "gigantic piece of toast"...it's all good, whatever the accompaniment.
  3:26pm
Mike East:

the first time my wife and I cooked together, she told me she makes good rice, so she would handle that. Then I found out her recipe involves cooking the rice until you start to smell burning, then remove from heat, and scrape the top of the rice out of the pot, serve and enjoy. Next, soak the pot in the sink for 2 days, and eventually discard. She's adorable, my wife is.
  3:26pm
dc pat:

yeah, I use the non-foofy way myself. Tight fitting lid, regular pan.
  3:28pm
pierre:

I'm all about red lentils / tomato / oignon soup here.
(with beer too, that goes without saying…)
  3:28pm
northguineahills:

The only secret to making good sticky rice is to just add 1-2 tablespoons of rice vinegar. It gives it a nice tangy flavor. But, don't add too much, b/c it won't be too sticky any more.
  3:29pm
Mike East:

I used work at a sushi restaurant and use rice cooker's all time. I've wanted to get one since, but also have no counter space for it.
  3:29pm
dc pat:

cut it out! I'm getting really hungry and that drawer has nothing in it but some old vitamin pills, paper clips, rubber bands, and business cards that I've never touched....
  3:30pm
dc pat:

ugh! this energy bar tastes terrible....wtf?
  3:31pm
GOD:

you need to believe in teh peanuts, son.
  3:31pm
dc pat:

I like to put a tiny bit of turmeric, some paprika (Spanish) and butter in with my basamati rice.
  3:32pm
northguineahills:

I also have some leftover grilled kale salad.
  3:32pm
dc pat:

holy crap, I'm never eating one of those again. It better make me ride like a bat outta heck.
  3:33pm
Van in DC:

Get a rice cooker from an Asian specialty shop, Thai or Korean especially. Those things are just the bestest!
  3:34pm
BSI:

Over here, all rice goes into some kind of infernal curry idea, so I keep it basic. Maybe add cloves, a splish of olive-oil, etc.
........god, that was a satisfying racket, SW.
  3:34pm
dc pat:

I guess the world is broken up into 2 kinds of people: 1. rice cooker people; and 2. not.
  3:34pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I use some concentrated chicken bouillon and some fresh parsley with my rice. The rice cookers are wonderful for a busy single guy
  3:34pm
DCE:

ok NGH, how the hell do you grill kale?
  3:35pm
Mike East:

I throw in several whole cloves of garlic when I make rice. Everytime you get one its like a nice little surprise.
  3:35pm
dc pat:

blech! gotta get some water...
  3:36pm
BSI:

beer.
  3:37pm
Overseer:

Is this the food netwerk?
  3:37pm
Van in DC:

Yes, BSI. My trek to find after-work beer starts in precisely 10 minutes.
  3:39pm
DCE:

ooh there's that awesome guitar lick again!
  3:39pm
dc pat:

there's probably some beer around here somewhere...
  3:40pm
northguineahills:

I have a skillet w/ holes in it. I put some foil over it. I rinse the kale & tomatoes in red wine vinegar & olive oil. Put some salt and pepper on it and throw it on the charcoal grill. Tasty!
  3:40pm
Andrew Waterloo:

making a mental note to stop by the liquor store on the way home this aft.
That and I am free to leave early.
  3:41pm
PKNY:

Is this CSC Funk Band a reissue or something new? Sounds like a Gangstarr tribute to me...
  3:44pm
northguineahills:

CSC is matt motel from Talibam! and colin from USAISAMONSTER plus 7 other musicians. All from the last 2 years.
  3:45pm
still b/p:

I got a shot of the dismissive "more beer-wise than thou" bit from someone at a bar the other night. Why are people so fond of IPAs he asked -- as if drinkers of it must be blind trend-jerked noodniks -- when it was just jammed with hops originally to preserve it when it was shipped, blah ditty blah ditty blah blah.
Thaaaank you very much. It's a good thing you was on hand to schooool me. And my IPA was jus' fine.
  3:47pm
Mike East:

sounds like HE was a noodnik (gonna use that word for a while, thanks)
  3:47pm
BSI:

I'm not fond of the IPAs myself, but as long as there's an ESB or something on tap, I keep my snobbishness to my damned self. Aint no reason to be a doosh.
  3:48pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@still, the response is: worked out surprisingly well for me
  3:48pm
BSI:

or a noodnik.
  3:50pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I only question people who drink Paps
  3:50pm
pierre:

ouh this is sweet.
  3:52pm
dc pat:

I've been defaulting to whatever has the highest alcohol content lately. It's like an explosion in yer mouth but you have to be careful...
  3:52pm
nobeernik:

Paps Blue Ribbon Smear...16 ounces of headache in a can!
  3:53pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Just take old Milwaukee and add water
  3:55pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I find going for the highest context lands you with crazy whiskey mash beers or very syrupy affairs like Buccaneer beer.
  3:56pm
Carmichael:

Hi Scottie, hello everyone. I drink only IPAs nowadays, as they seemingly hypnotized my palette. I took a drink of Corona yesterday at the State Fair and did the Danny Thomas spit-take.
  3:56pm
Andrew Waterloo:

content not context
  3:56pm
Blue Velvet:

Heineken shit! Pabst Blue Ribbon Mother Fucker!
  3:57pm
r i s k y:

Audio is a bit weird? Or is it just me... Oh well. Rock on Sir Scott!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
Scott W:

yep audio is quite weird on this track.
  3:59pm
dc pat:

I had some Six Point Resin last night--hoppy but balanced w/ malt power.
  3:59pm
still b/p:

Like to see one of those super chillin' Corona ads on the beach with someone sipping and doing the spit take or "escupir tomar."

The PBR in a bottle was my beer of choice for a year or two in college. I'm not sure I'd drink one now even if it was the ONLY choice somewhere. But to all those on happy pounder patrol, have at it.
  3:59pm
dc pat:

I can listen to Steve Martin say that all day...
  4:00pm
northguineahills:

I only drink PBR when I'm broke, or I need a watery beer b/c I'm dehydrated. I will drink it over most other cheap-ass beers or a heineken.
  4:02pm
DCE:

I had a Six Point from a tap last week but the bartender didn't know anything about it...still trying to figure out which one it was. She just said it was a wheat beer.
  4:02pm
Carmichael:

Oh BTW, I saw an Indian movie the other night on a whim, and it was actually pretty good: Delhi Belly. Take 3 slacker roommates, add 1 rich bitchy girlfriend, 1 arranged marriage-to-be, a diamond smuggling operation, a glorious stylish shoot-out, and it ends with the obligatory Bollywood mass dance party. Good music, well worth my $8 Netflix subscription.
  4:02pm
Chris from DC:

ESBs are a bit underrepresented around these parts. At the bar next door they're doing JulyPA.
  4:02pm
dc pat:

has anybody on this list ever even touched a light beer? I know I haven't. All the young republicans around here drink nothing but. I can't figure it out..
  4:03pm
tim from champaign:

I usually keep cheap beer on hand for sippin around the house. Top choices are PBR and Stag. I switch it up with Hams and Gennessee now and then.
  4:03pm
dc pat:

DCE: they do have a wheat beerish thing...can't remember which one though. hang on.
  4:03pm
DCE:

haha, I had to resort to a Labatt Blue Light about two weeks ago when I HAD NOTHING ELSE IN THE FRIDGE. Didn't kill me.
  4:04pm
DCE:

(it's the wife's choice)
  4:05pm
Bas, NL:

Hi Scott! Hi Listeners! Great track by Dirty
Beaches..
  4:05pm
dc pat:

this one? http://sixpoint.com/beers/core/sweetaction
  4:06pm
Beerbully:

Sounds pretty groovy...
  4:07pm
DCE:

yes, thanks, that has to be it, she said something about cream ale as well, which I summarily dismissed when she said it.
  4:07pm
dc pat:

mrs. dc pat doesn't even drink light beer...although she does drink Corona--pffffthhhtaaak!
  4:07pm
Bas, NL:

Wow.. didn't realize; it's live as well!!
  4:07pm
Carmichael:

Jesus H. Christ on a crutch, that 6 Point Resin is 9.1 ABV! 3 of those and I couldn't walk to my car.
  4:08pm
DCE:

I dunno, I really don't mind Corona, though it's way overpriced for what it is.
  4:08pm
BSI:

@DCPat: Just caught your question about light beer. I've heard that such things exist, though I couldn't fathom why...
  4:08pm
Carlings Black Label:

Best of inexpensive beer.
  4:09pm
BSI:

...speaking of which, time for another Hobgoblin. Talk amongst yourselves....
  4:09pm
hamburger:

Grolsch!
  4:10pm
Carmichael:

Light beer: "Great for your date!"
  4:10pm
northguineahills:

The worst mexican beers are Tecate & Carta Blanca. Sol sucks as well.
  4:10pm
BSI:

gezundheit.
  4:10pm
hamburger:

ou Hobgoblin is a fancy
  4:11pm
Carmichael:

Sierra Nevada is my go-to beer at home, although Lagunitas makes a nice IPA as well.
  4:12pm
pierre:

i like Westmalle beer, BSI, any thoughts on this particular one ?
  4:12pm
Chris from DC:

The Sierra Torpedo is aptly named.
  4:12pm
dc pat:

Jeezus, you think Resin is strong:

"TRIPLE SWEET ACTION - 13.0% ABV • 95 IBU • 17 SRM
Because sometimes you just don't have the time to have three regular Sweet Actions. "
  4:12pm
Mexicana:

Negro Modelo mi amigo.
  4:13pm
Mike East:

when I first turned 21, I was drinking Amstel Light for some reason. Now I pretty much stick to yuenglings. I also went through a long period of drinking 22oz Coronas when I worked at the sushi joint.
  4:14pm
DCE:

this past weekend was dedicated to Negra Modelo
  4:14pm
BSI:

@Pierre: I haven't had it, though it looks like a decent Tripel... would be a fine thing right now, given the summer we're having in DC...
  4:15pm
dc pat:

I'm from PA and drank my share of Yuenglins but the owner of the company is an asswipe and I can't give him anymore dough.
  4:16pm
BSI:

God, speaking of Lagunitas, there was a place in town that had their HAIRY EYEBALL ale on tap, was wonderful. Haven't seen it since, anywhere. How I miss thee, hairy eyeball...
  4:17pm
Carmichael:

@Chris: you are dead on. I drank one accidentally, expecting a Pale Ale (the labels are nearly identical). I got a Mike Tyson right hand instead.
  4:18pm
northguineahills:

Negra Modelo was the first beer I ever tasted. I used to not drink (but recreational activities were ok), and that got me sold on beer just for flavor. It's still one of the better macrobrews out there. (and they make for a bitchin' michelada).
  4:18pm
Carmichael:

When I visited Florida, some Central American tending bar tried to say Yuengling about 20 times. Since I had never heard of it, I assumed he was saying "Ying Yang". Damn boutique beers ...
  4:19pm
dc pat:

I was gonna say, he reminds me of US Girls. Great stuff.
  4:19pm
tim from champaign:

Wow! Really dig this Dirty Beaches. I feel like a jerk because I lumped them in with weenie rock bands like Beach House, Sleigh Bells, Dirty Projectors etc and hadn't give them a fair shake.
  4:20pm
Carmichael:

Who the hell drinks a 13% beer?? Is it actually still "beer" at that level, or atomic energy??
  4:20pm
BSI:

yeh, the "alan vega via david lynch" description is right the hell on. Digging. Proceed.
  4:20pm
Chris from DC:

I was waylaid by some Dogfish Head 90 minute this weekend. A couple of those (ok and a Fat Tire) and it was pretty much bed time. 10% is about my limit.
  4:21pm
dc pat:

nah, I'd say it's a barley wine at that level. I've never had one that strong..I don't think. 10% is about all I can take.
  4:21pm
dc pat:

Ha! Chris...
  4:23pm

Lately, if I'm at home just about half of any beer immediately parlays me into sleepy time.
  4:24pm

hey, dirty beaches is a canuck. kewl.
  4:25pm

his work is far superior to Frankenberry's.
  4:46pm

WAAH! Well-chosen, maestro (re: the Goblin)

  5:11pm
glenn:

sure, but how do you feel about echo pedals?
  5:13pm
baba booey:

The same way I feel about reverb buttons
  5:13pm
Carmichael:

@Mike East: yes, I made my statement knowing that, although I typically made it look otherwise. I actually bought my Boss from Roland many years ago. I have a bunch of one-off pedals too, which I haven't used in eons. Lou Reed's Rock'n'Roll got me on that delay kick.
  5:15pm
northguineahills:

I had a Korg tape echo that someone walked away from after a gig. I still mourn and long for it.
  5:16pm

This music is dope
  5:18pm

@Carmichael - I wasn't tryin' to make you look like you didn't know - sorry. That is a piece of trivia that I didn't know until I got into the backline rental business. blew my mind a little when I found out.
  5:19pm
BSI:

whoa. Finally get to hear this Carter Tutti Void stuff. The intro wasn't too far from some of Moebius' material... lovely.
  5:24pm

This is great stuff, Scott! @Mike, no problemo. I didn't know it either until I went to buy a floor box and was subsequently baffled by company morphing.
