Every show starts with a cut from the ‘70s: Rediscovering the forgotten rockers, revisiting the once-hated disco beats, replaying the power-pop favorites. Next: copious amounts of new releases and occasional live bands. Also: I’m the biggest Nick Gilder fan on WFMU.

Options July 4, 2012: Disco Indepen-dance Party!

Listen to this show: | Add or read comments

Summertime always reminds me of listening to Ken "Spider" Webb and Ricky Ricardo and, of course the Chief Rocker Frankie Crocker on WBLS. In that spirit, I present the Evan "Funk" Davies Disco Indepen-dance Party! You'll hear old-school classics, along with some lost gems you'll wish you'd heard 30 years ago! Watch the fireworks reflect off your mirror ball while you celebrate life, liberty, and the pursuit of the perfect beat

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Disco disclaimer! I'm keeping the lines blurry and using "disco" as a catch-all term for my take on fun dance music from the mid-70s to the early '80s, expanding the boundaries of the traditional disco era (and sound, for that matter).
Weems! Awesome bit of info! Great to have you here.
Curious, and not trying to provoke controversy by any means, but in light of your comment on my Facebook page - is there a song (or songs) that you consider the "last" disco song?
  Wed. 7/4/12 10:01pm Weems:
Good Times by Chic was a game changer in the summer of 79. Remember not liking it at the time. Less bpm than your typical disco track. Stripped down, less produced.
Then DiSco Demolition night. By the
fall of 79, rappers Delight came out, sampling Good Times, and the world changed forever.
  Wed. 7/4/12 10:11pm Weems:
Used to go to a record store every Saturday in Rochester, because they carried Billboard magazine. I'd always review the Disco chart. Makes me wonder when Billboard changed it to the "Dance" chart
  Wed. 7/4/12 10:12pm steve:
hi evan! got home just in time for your show. explosions, car alarms and cheers on all sides of me in greenpoint.
Avatar    Wed. 7/4/12 10:13pm efd:
Weems, interesting question - I'd guess sometime in the early '80s as rap came more to the forefront.
Hi Steve, glad you made it back in time!
  Wed. 7/4/12 10:16pm monica:
do it, frankie! do it to it!
  Wed. 7/4/12 10:22pm Tom - In Gravesend Brooklyn:
I still love the pre-disco funk .. although the early so called Disco classics like from around 1975ish -- wouldn't admit it at that time ,, but I liked it.. but once Rod ie... Do you think I'm sexy .. kinda - nay but '78 79--- Disco is cool fun .. but one beat and like George Clinton once.. said about most latter disco tunes got kinda like after a while making love with just one stroke...
  Wed. 7/4/12 10:22pm steve:
any listeners ever make it to any of david mancuso's disco loft parties, past or present? i finally got to one last year, fun time.
  Wed. 7/4/12 10:24pm Mike VL:
Didn't know "Devil's Gun" was the first song played on the opening night of Studio 54...at least that's what Wikipedia tells me.
  Wed. 7/4/12 10:24pm monica:
you're killin' it. efd!
@steve, yes - transcendent.
  Wed. 7/4/12 10:26pm Weems:
Too weird, a friend posted Maybe by the Three Degrees On fb the other day and I immediately thought ther best record is Giving Up Giving In!
  Wed. 7/4/12 10:30pm Barkevious Shabazz:
"Everybody Dance" by Chic is super clazzy and you can't beat George McCrea's "Rock Your Baby" fer when yr shuttin it down.
  Wed. 7/4/12 10:32pm steve:
tk is the best! someone needs to make a complete discography box.
  Wed. 7/4/12 10:39pm Barkevious Shabazz:
Frankie Smith. Genius, Philadelphian.
  Wed. 7/4/12 10:40pm Weems:
Double Dutch most Assuredly not "disco", but a huge record in NYC. 92 KTU WAS disco, BLS was more of a mainstream R&b format.
  Wed. 7/4/12 10:47pm Carolyn:
Really wish I was listening to this at an outdoor party instead of on my break at work. But hey it still sounds great.
Happy Independence EFD and everyone!
Avatar    Wed. 7/4/12 10:51pm efd:
cheri, I was actually planning to go a little more mainstream with my KC selection later.
Hey Carolyn! Glad you could at least catch a little of the show on your break!
The Clavinet. Funkiest instrument ever?
  Wed. 7/4/12 11:21pm Cerrone:
If I were playing a show at Le Poisson Rouge, would I get a spin on the show?
  Wed. 7/4/12 11:22pm monica:
Rosco! EFD, you did NOT just reverb that shit out the park. Too effin' funny! That was vexacious to the spirit, yo.
  Wed. 7/4/12 11:23pm Kaspar:
Rosko sounds like the guy at the end of Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.
  Wed. 7/4/12 11:24pm Kat:
omg I had no idea there was a Disco Desiderata!
  Wed. 7/4/12 11:25pm Barkevious Shabazz:
  Wed. 7/4/12 11:28pm monica:
  Wed. 7/4/12 11:29pm Holly in NC:
@Evan - If doing Preludes, how about Vicki Sue Robinson "Hot SNmmer night" ? Very apropos ...
  Wed. 7/4/12 11:29pm Emily:
this is a great dance party, Evan! esp loved those words of wisdom - so true!
  Wed. 7/4/12 11:30pm Holly in NC:
Summer.
I need a drink.
  Wed. 7/4/12 11:31pm Weems:
Heatwave was probably 3rd on the bill of 6 acts. All the R&b shows had A handful of acts. That may have been a Kool & The Gang Show. Or the Jackson's. Saw Meco! Wild Cherry too. Trammps. Of course the Take Funk to Heaven in 77 Pfunk show, but that ain't disco! But you could play UndiSco Kid
  Wed. 7/4/12 11:31pm Ken From Hyde Park:
You'll have to petition Station Manager Ken to get an EFD dance channel stream.
Avatar    Wed. 7/4/12 11:33pm efd:
Thanks Emily!
Holly, the only Vicki Sue I have is a 12" of her big hit, "Turn The Beat Around."
  Wed. 7/4/12 11:37pm Barkevious Shabazz:
Teddy had tranny problems. Never gets old.
  Wed. 7/4/12 11:38pm Holly in NC:
While not disco, I'm also feeling Nu Shooz right about now...
  Wed. 7/4/12 11:43pm steve:
freestyle!
  Wed. 7/4/12 11:48pm Kat:
I don't think this Shannon classic is out of place at all. To me it falls between disco and house. Danced to it a zillion times back in the day.
  Wed. 7/4/12 11:49pm Kat:
Ken from Hyde Park: I like the idea of a WFMU dance music stream a LOT. Both old skool and current stuff.
Avatar    Wed. 7/4/12 11:51pm efd:
Kat, I agree (obvs)! But I also appreciate that others feel differently. Music can be so personal!
  Wed. 7/4/12 11:55pm Weems:
Great show! Mention some titles u couldn't get to!
